‘Mortal Kombat II’ Brings Brutal Fight Scenes, Fatalities, and Epic Action — Now Showing in Cinemas and IMAX

Get ready for bone-crushing battles, jaw-dropping stunts, and the brutal tournament fans have been waiting for.

Now showing only in cinemas and IMAX, “Mortal Kombat II” levels up the action with larger-scale fights, devastating fatalities, and fierce new warriors entering the arena. According to producer James Wan, the sequel delivers everything fans loved about the first film — only bigger and far more intense.

Mortal Kombat II Ludi Lin Mehcad Brooks Jessica McNamee Karl Urban

“This one is bigger in scope and scale,” says Wan.

The explosive sequel sees Earthrealm’s champions facing their most dangerous threat yet as they battle the terrifying forces of Shao Kahn. Joining the returning fighters is fan-favorite character Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, bringing even more energy and attitude into the high-stakes tournament.

Directed once again by Simon McQuoid, the film stars Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

    Watch the Trailer Here:

Massive Fight Sequences Took Months to Prepare

With nearly 20 major fight scenes featured throughout the film, the production team spent months carefully planning every punch, kick, and finishing move.

Producer E. Bennett Walsh explains that preparation was essential to making the action sequences feel exciting while also supporting the story.

    6

“We’ve learned that these fights take a great deal of preparation. We have about 20 fights in total and they all had to be carefully choreographed,” he says. “We made video clips so that everyone could understand how they needed to flow, and then broke them up to add in all the technical components that went into shooting them. We doubled the stunt preparation time to five months.”

The filmmakers worked closely with stunt coordinator and second unit director Kyle Gardiner to ensure each battle had its own identity and emotional weight.

“Within each fight you have to find its point of view, as well as the narrative that you need to weave into the story, so that the audience stays with it and doesn’t get fight fatigue. The fights need to have many layers, so that they don’t flatline. With enough time, we were able to design all the fights before we began shooting. That allowed us to take it to the next level and fine tune, which gave us a great advantage.”

    7

    “There’s Blood, There’s Gore, There’s Everything!”

For Gardiner, honoring the iconic video game franchise was one of the production’s top priorities.

“We stay true to the game at all times and the truth of the game itself. We have fatalities and brutalities. It’s all there. There’s blood, there’s gore, there’s everything! We pay homage to the game, but then we take it to another level entirely. It’s pretty awesome.”

The cast underwent demanding physical training throughout production, often balancing full shooting days with nonstop stunt rehearsals.

“The cast underwent a huge amount of training. It was quite brutal. They’d work all day, every day, and then if they weren’t on set, they’d be training with us. It was impressive to see them all handle the volume and really step up to the training.”

    2

Director Simon McQuoid praised the cast’s dedication, noting that every sequence required precision, endurance, and emotional performance.

“They make it look effortless, but it’s not easy. They had to understand their performance and their character. As well as learning their actual lines, they also had to learn the fight lines of the choreography. It was a huge amount of work for each little sequence. But they all worked so very hard and I think that hard work really paid off in each and every performance. I mean, it was tough – like running a marathon. There were days where everyone was tired, but with a smile on every face.”

    8

Karl Urban Enters the Arena as Johnny Cage

For Karl Urban, stepping into the world of Mortal Kombat meant jumping directly into stunt rehearsals from the moment he arrived.

“When I landed at the airport to start filming, they picked me up and drove me straight to a stunt rehearsal, because the stunt choreography was such a massive undertaking,” shares Urban. “So, from day one, I was thrown in at the deep end. We had an extraordinary stunt team – one of the best I’ve ever worked with.”

Urban also explored martial arts culture and tournament fighting to better understand Johnny Cage’s personality and fighting style.

Meanwhile, Tati Gabrielle, who portrays Jade, fully embraced the film’s action-heavy production.

“There were so many fight sequences, but I’m very big on stunts. I love them. I’m always like, ‘Can I do more? Can you put me on a wire? I want to do more!’ Every little step needs so many drills. But it’s so much fun. And I felt so badass all the time doing all these great stunts!”

    Mortal Kombat II Adeline Rudolph

For Adeline Rudolph, who plays Kitana, mastering the character’s signature steel fans became one of the highlights of filming.

“The fans that Kitana fights with were my favorite part. They were so much fun to play around with. Once we were in the training phase, I had a normal pair of fans to begin with, and we just started to play around with those to figure out what felt comfortable and what felt good. I love my fans! I was annoyingly obsessed with them.”

    3

Real Martial Arts Experience Added Authenticity

Several members of the cast brought real martial arts backgrounds to the production, including Max Huang, who trained for years under the Jackie Chan stunt team.

“To me, it’s about telling a story through movement,” says Huang. “I’ve been in the stunt and action world for many years, so it feels natural to me.”

He also praised co-star Ludi Lin for dedicating himself completely to the demanding fight choreography.

“Ludi Lin, who plays Liu Kang, was not so familiar. He trained so hard. He’d text me, ‘Let’s go down to the gym and train the choreography, train the fight.’ He put in so much hard work and I think it really paid off. It shows in our fight together.”

    5

A Bigger, More Explosive Mortal Kombat Experience

For producer James Wan, creating unforgettable action while remaining faithful to the beloved franchise was always the mission.

“We all felt that we wanted to get the fights correct,” says James Wan. “We wanted them to feel special and unique to each of the different characters, but also to depict the characters in the correct way. We spent a lot of time designing the set pieces with the fights, focusing on each combatant’s special traits and abilities, which shaped the sequences while propelling the story forward as well.”

Packed with spectacular battles, iconic characters, and brutal finishing moves, “Mortal Kombat II” promises an adrenaline-fueled cinematic experience fans won’t want to miss.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Stylish but Hollow: A Review of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

MOVIE REVIEW: Stylish but Hollow: A Review of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

I wasn’t sure if I ever wanted a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. To me, the original was already so perfect, one of those evergreen films you can return to over-and-over again. Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs served as the perfect foil, played it so well that matched Meryl Streep’s iconic Miranda Priestly, who really could have won an Oscar for that performance.

It was just as enjoyable to watch the banter and barbs flung with precision at perfect timing by Emily Blunt’s Emily and Stanley Tucci’s Nigel. It’s a film I could come back to and the story in itself was so complete that I had no real desire to see more from them because everything that I needed was there.

So coming into Devil Wears Prada 2 came with a lot of resistance. The trailer didn’t tell me anything other than they were going to be delivering the same level of humor while amping up the glitz and glamour. The story finds Andy Sachs returns to Runway after losing her job due to the layoffs of media workers (and other industries) due to the current capitalist wave.

Twenty years have passed, and Miranda doesn’t even remember her. Miranda herself is struggling to keep the brand afloat amidst the changes and challenges in the field of traditional publishing since the Internet and social media has changed everything.

Andy’s return to Runway isn’t Miranda’s choice and she now has to prove her worth all over again. While the story runs almost beat-for-beat with the 2006 original, the dynamic has shifted quite a bit with Andy more confident and knowledgeable about the world.

The performances are still enjoyable with Meryl Streep given significantly more to do as the film has her on equal screen time and agency as a character than she was in the first film. This is as much her movie as it is Andy’s. They’ve humanized her, the eponymous “Devil” of the film’s title, now left scrambling to keep her budget and her brand alive, and hoping for a promotion for “Head of Global Content” in the publishing company, a position she has spent many years forging.

However, this added storyline and humanizing of her destroys all of the character’s mystery – which some people enjoyed, though I felt lessens her impact on the film – and without that signature coldness, the film feels like it lost some of its signature bite. By grounding Miranda, I felt more inclined to look at the things that the film wants to say.

And while it does mention the changes in the publishing industry – in terms of its business models and being run by billionaires who only care about making a profit and don’t care really about creating something valuable and meaningful outside of economics – it never really gets to go deep and hard into these issues. Maybe it’s not what the film is trying to do but the whole narrative is set on trying to save Runway with a Jeff Bezos-type billionaire character, Benji Barnes (played by Justin Theroux) playing a crucial role in its future, but I felt the film took for granted in showing us what was worth saving in the first place.

The film still regales us with gorgeous outfits and great styling. It features multiple cameos by real superstars and legends of the fashion world. But in this day and age of a possible global recession and a reevaluation of the true cost of luxury, I end up questioning what the point of all of it is.

In the original film, that amazing monologue about “cerulean” was an important narrative beat to show Miranda’s knowledge in the world of fashion and a turning point in Andy’s discovery of what it is she was truly entering but it was also necessary because it made us realise how high fashion is connected to everything – especially back in 2006. As Andy began dressing the part, looking great, she started to attract good things coming to her. The Devil Wears Prada does not have that same moment – to show us how important and necessary high fashion is to the world today – and thus feels like the film sort of stumbles in what it is trying to do.

Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton in 20th Century Studios’ THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2. Photo by Macall Polay. © 2026 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

Yes, we want the characters to succeed because Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Stanley Tucci are amazing and their performances truly grab at you. Emily Blunt is also great, but her character now runs adjacent to Runway. But there are so many plot points and narrative twists keeping the story moving, yet it never really stops and gives us a moment to rationalize what high fashion means in 2026. It’s all gorgeous to look at, but who can afford a three thousand dollar handbag in today’s economy? The film never showed me why that matters.

Director David Frankel does a good job at keeping the pace, keeping the plot moving without ever feeling boring, and allowing his actors to shine. We got gorgeous cinematic moments and a lot of good humor reminiscent of the original but I don’t see the same heart that was there that got me to fall in love with the first movie.

    My Rating: 3.5 Stars

The battle lines are drawn—and this time, it’s all about the tournament. Mortal Kombat II arrives in cinemas and IMAX on May 6, raising the stakes with a more expansive world, deeper character arcs, and the long-awaited clash fans have been craving.

Producer James Wan, a longtime fan of the franchise, couldn’t be more thrilled about what’s coming. The sequel doesn’t just continue the story—it amplifies it.

Mortal Kombat II Ludi Lin Mehcad Brooks Jessica McNamee Karl Urban

“The biggest difference now is that we finally have the tournament,” Wan explains. “Everything feels bigger—the scale, the characters, the realms we explore. We pushed further into the Netherrealm and really maximized the world of Mortal Kombat. These characters are the heart of it all, and fans deserve to see them fully realized.”

Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film gathers a dynamic ensemble cast, including Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, and Damon Herriman, alongside returning standouts like Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

    Watch the trailer here:

    A New Chapter, Familiar Warriors

    Johnny Cage (Karl Urban)
“When we first meet Johnny Cage, he’s a very dispirited character. His career is in the tank, and he’s fallen on hard times. The journey for Johnny through this movie is one of how he finds himself, how he finds his inner power,” says Urban. “As part of my research, I delved into the culture of martial arts and martial arts tournaments, because that’s where Johnny grew up.”

    Kitana (Adeline Rudolph)
“Kitana is a warrior. She is the high princess of Edenia – an extremely strong character who loses her father and is raised by Shao Kahn and his army, in his world,” says Rudolph. “She has spent all these years seeking a way to avenge her father’s death and save her people from Shao Kahn’s rule. She has a great strength, with a lot of poise and grace, but there’s also a certain vulnerability about her and a certain softness.”

    Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee)
“Sonya Blade finally has her Arcana,” says McNamee. “Last time, she was fighting like a mere mortal, with her knives and fists. But with her newfound power, she gets to really jump in and partake in the tournament as an equal with the rest of the gang. She is strong, fierce and female, and can hold her own among the boys.”

    Kano (Josh Lawson)
Says director Simon McQuoid, “I think all the fans will be pleased to know that Kano comes back. We were forced to bring him back from the dead, because there was no way I was going to leave Josh Lawson on the bench!”

    Liu Kang (Ludi Lin)
“My character, Liu Kang, is the heart of Mortal Kombat. He’s the moral compass, the true north. He’s legendary, he’s strong, he’s disciplined and loyal to a fault, sometimes against his own good,” says Lin. “All these things combine with his mythical powers, his fire powers. That informs where his passion comes from. His rage is manifested in the fire that he shoots out.”

    Jax (Mehcad Brooks)
“Jax has hunted long enough that the hunt is in him now, it’s what makes him who he is – and it takes a monster to fight monsters,” says Brooks. “A monster isn’t good or evil on its face; what makes you glad one’s on your side is the why behind what he does. Jax has chosen to use that part of himself – the pain, the trauma, the anger – to protect people and save Earthrealm from annihilation. That’s what makes him a hero.”

    JADE (Tati Gabrielle)
“I grew up a Mortal Kombat kid. And the character I’d always play was Jade, so it was incredible to be able to play her out for real in the film,” shares Gabrielle. “Jade is quite the force to be reckoned with.”

    Cole Young (Lewis Tan)
“Cole is particularly unique to Mortal Kombat, because he’s the only character who wasn’t in the original game, although he’s tied into Scorpion as a descendant,” says Tan. “In a way, he was almost the eyes and ears for the audience to be introduced to these different characters in a way that maybe people who have played the game could get into and see it in a new perspective.”

    Mortal Kombat II Adeline Rudolph

    Rising Darkness, Unstoppable Threats

    Quan Chi (Damon Herriman)
“Quan Chi is an incredibly powerful sorcerer in the Netherrealm, and a major villain in the Mortal Kombat series,” says Herriman. “He’s a necromancer, which means that he’s able to bring pretty much anyone back from the dead. He’s particularly cold and calculating, very menacing and completely self-serving. I was very drawn to the role because it’s unlike anything I’ve done before… It also gave me the opportunity to take a deep dive into Mortal Kombat, a game that is beloved by fans all around the planet.”

    Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford)
“Shao Kahn is the emperor. He’s the kingpin.  He’s evil and he’s deceptive, but he’s also something of a genius!” says Ford. “He’s completely driven by his ego and wanting to mark his place in history. The character preparation was very interesting, because he’s half scorpion, half human. So that was a bizarre fantasy, although we absolutely wanted to bring an element of reality into that.”

    Kung Lao (Max Huang)
“He’s one of the best fighters in Mortal Kombat,” says Huang. “What makes him so iconic, of course, is his razor-brimmed hat, with which he cuts people in half and does all those crazy things. Kung Lao is quite a different character in this film, though. He’s changed. There’s a feeling of abandonment and revenge inside him that he holds towards Raiden and Liu Kang, because he feels they left him. It was very interesting this time to dive deep into his character and his journey. And the fight between Kung Lao and Liu Kang is magnificent.”

    Shang Tsung (Chin Han)
“You never know what Shang Tsung’s true intentions are. Whether he’s going to zig or zag,” says Chin Han. “And the act of soul stealing is so provocative that I find it quite compelling. It’s almost like being an actor – when you get a script and play all these different characters. Shang has always been quite an enigma.”

    Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano)
“I play Lord Raiden, and he is a very fine character!” says Asano. “He has very strong powers, including the ability to move between portals and take the champions into another realm. Once I put on his hat with its special powers, I feel very powerful on set… I hope I make my son proud! He loves this game.”

    Bi-Han (Joe Taslim)
“Bi-Han was born in Hell. In Netherrealm,” says Taslim. “That bright, bright flame from Scorpion at the end of the first movie cast the darker shadow of Bi-Han. And he goes even deeper into the darkness in this movie. He’s a tortured soul now, an assassin.”

Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada)
“It’s interesting for me to play these two characters again. As a Japanese, I’ve played a lot of ninja roles since I was young. The ninja character is very familiar to audiences. It’s very easy for me to find a link with the role. I can use all of my knowledge and experience, and I very much know the fighting style. So I can play Hanzo very naturally,” says Sanada. “But Scorpion is different. I love being in that character. When I put my costume on and say that great Scorpion line, ‘Get over here,’ I am just so happy to be back as Scorpion. He’s one of the greatest Mortal Kombat characters.”

    Mortal Kombat II Martyn Ford

    The Tournament Begins

At last, the legendary tournament takes center stage. Heroes and villains collide in a visually striking, high-stakes showdown that promises intense combat and unforgettable moments.

With its expanded scope, richly drawn characters, and relentless energy, Mortal Kombat II is poised to deliver a bold cinematic experience that honors its roots while pushing forward. Distributed locally by Warner Bros. PH.

A Colorful Cast of Human Suspects

Complementing the all-star voice cast is a dynamic lineup of human characters portrayed by an impressive ensemble: Nick Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, Emma Thompson, and more. Each character brings intrigue, humor, and a layer of suspicion to the unfolding mystery.

Nick Braun & Nicholas Galitzine: A Quirky Crime-Solving Duo

Nick Braun stars as Tim Derry, a well-meaning but clumsy police officer eager to prove his worth. Often underestimated, Tim sees the case as his chance at redemption.

“Tim is driven by the need to prove himself to a town that sees him as an incompetent cop,” says Braun. Luckily, the sheep help him come out of his shell and become the officer he’s meant to be.” He adds, “I always imagined that Derry didn’t just want to be a cop—he wanted to be a detective, but failed the exam. Solving this case becomes a kind of redemption, even if it’s just proving to himself that he’s capable—that he can get it right and save the town.”

Alongside him is Nicholas Galitzine as Elliot Matthews, an ambitious reporter chasing his first big story. Together, the unlikely duo forms a partnership that’s as entertaining as it is determined.

“The buddy-cop movie is one of my favorite genres,” says Galitzine, “so getting to work with and learn from a comedic talent like Nick Braun was really fun.”

    Molly Gordon: The Mysterious Daughter

Rebecca Hampstead, portrayed by Molly Gordon, arrives in Denbrook under suspicious circumstances. Unknown to the townsfolk, she is George’s estranged daughter—a revelation that instantly places her under scrutiny.

“Rebecca was a delicious challenge,” says Gordon. “She’s set up as a suspect from her entrance, which gave me so many fun opportunities to toy with the audience’s expectations and interpretations. I spent a lot of time thinking about how certain looks or movements could be read. I’d never done a mystery before, let alone one where I’m the prime suspect, so I had so much fun getting to play.”

    Hong Chau: The Enigmatic Innkeeper

Beth Pennock, played by Hong Chau, shares a tense history with George. Their long-standing feud raises questions—could it have turned deadly?

“As an actor, it’s fun to play a character who has a secret—it gives you something to chew on and layer into each scene,” says Hong Chau. “You don’t immediately know Beth’s full backstory. It’s more compelling to reveal who she is through what she wears, how she looks and how she carries herself.”

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Poetic and Strange, ‘Mother Mary’ Showcases the Inner Pop Diva of Anne Hathaway

MOVIE REVIEW: Poetic and Strange, ‘Mother Mary’ Showcases the Inner Pop Diva of Anne Hathaway

There is a profound embrace of poeticism in David Lowery’s Mother Mary. Amidst the fashionable, glamorous world of a pop star and her former costume designer and creative partner, lies a story of a friendship’s dissolution, one so devastating it leaves wounds capable of summoning specters of unsettled emotions. The film feels almost theatrical, from the dialogue spoken by Sam Anselm (portrayed by the disarming Michaela Coel) to the transitions Lowery uses to bridge the past and present. And as metaphors that take shape within the narrative, they thrust the film into an entirely different genre. It is fascinating as it is visually stunning.

Anne Hathaway stars as the titular pop icon, Mother Mary, who is about to make a comeback after a traumatic onstage accident. Exhausted, frustrated, shaken to her core by waves of emotion, she flies to England to visit the home of Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), a fashion designer, to ask for a dress for her comeback performance. But Mother Mary and Sam have a tortured past. Sam was once Mary’s costume designer and from rifling through their history, she was more than that: a creative partner, a foundational presence who was there from the beginning, and a friend.

Sam is cold and detached, yet she keeps Mother Mary talking, betraying her need for something from her. She takes on the job; to design and craft a dress in less than four days. And in the process, the two women hash out that moment when their friendship ended, when Mother Mary chose to replace her original circle with a new creative team behind her. It is at that point, an hour into the film, where the film shifts radically as Sam reveals that the pain of that parting led her to a supernatural encounter: a ghost.

    Mother Mary MM 2 MM

For the first hour, the film moves at a slow pace. Lowery focuses his lens on the very nuanced and layered conversations between Mary and Sam.

    Mother Mary MM 10 MM

Mary is visibly broken and desperate for connection, while Sam is keeping her cool, clearly reveling in the power of being needed. Sam’s dialogue are poetic, descriptive, and eloquent. Michaela’s English delivery and sharp English accent cast a hypnotic spell.

    Mother Mary MM 8 MM

In contrast, Anne Hathaway’s Mary is a broken person, her words are unfiltered, messy, and unrehearsed. This first half of the film functions almost like a stage play – a two-hander where the only action is the two characters navigating the past.

    Mother Mary MM 7 MM

Lowery keeps it theatrical, transitioning from present to the past with a movement of the camera to reveal the past right at the edge of the screen, coming into focus, and the character in the moment of remembrance enters into the frame to act out in the flashback. No cuts.

    Mother Mary MM 15 MM
Mother Mary Images courtesy of Creazion Studios

Just one continuing movement allowing time and space to collapse into each scene. Though a decade has passed since their parting, the film suggests that the past is just a camera pan away. It is a visceral reminder that these events are still very real, very present, and very close to both two women.

    Mother Mary MM 11 MM

Occasionally, the film allows Mary to break into full performance, emphasizing that her stage persona is every bit a part of this story. The sharp contrast between the gothic, dark design of Sam’s workshop, and the searing bright lights of Mary’s world and massive crowds – jumping into some killer songs by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX (with Anne Hathaway herself sharing songwriting credits) – keeps the energy running while expanding the film’s themes into that of art and creation.

    Mother Mary

The image of the pop artist is just as instrumental as the music and the performance. Sam was taken away from something she helped craft, and Mary, standing at this critical juncture in her career, realizes she must return to the source to truly move forward.

    Mother Mary MM 13 MM

When the ghost story emerges halfway through the film, Mother Mary fully embraces its Gothic mode. The narrative shifts to the horror genre, yet it remains firmly rooted in the one thing that both women are searching for: closure. The ghost is both literal and metaphorical, and the film adopts an air of whimsy that feels entirely earned, the emotions simmering throughout the film seemed destined for this.

Hathaway and Coel are incredible, creating two characters so distinct and lived-in that their relationship becomes the fulcrum of all of Lowery’s storytelling techniques. The theatricality, the extreme close ups, the music, and the seamless transitions – they are all there in service to Sam and Mary’s journey towards liberation. Both actors are so profoundly committed to the film’s whole vision that the narrative never feels silly or over-the-top.

    Mother Mary MM 9 MM

Mother Mary is a strange, little film but if you can ride its out-of-the-box presentation, it is a rare cinematic treat. At the very least, one can simply enjoy Anne Hathaway living her pop-star dreams, proving there is formidable diva within her that has finally found the perfect stage on which to shine.
