  • ‘They Will Kill You’: Zazie Beetz Trapped in a Deadly Nine-Floor Building Inspired by Dante’s Inferno

‘They Will Kill You’: Zazie Beetz Trapped in a Deadly Nine-Floor Building Inspired by Dante’s Inferno

What if every floor of a building represented a different circle of Hell? That chilling idea fuels the blood-soaked horror-action-comedy “They Will Kill You,” arriving exclusively in cinemas March 25, 2026.

Directed and co-written by Kirill Sokolov, the film traps audiences inside The Virgil, a mysterious nine-floor building that becomes the setting for a relentless night of survival. At the center of the chaos is a young woman played by Zazie Beetz, who must fight her way through a demonic cult’s twisted lair before she becomes their next offering.

Joining Beetz in the cast are Myha’La, Paterson Joseph, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette, forming an ensemble that fuels the film’s dark humor and brutal action.

    1 3

The Virgil: A Deadly Building With Layers of Hell

At the heart of the film lies The Virgil, a seemingly luxurious condo complex hiding unspeakable horrors behind its walls.

“Our production designer is a mad genius,” Sokolov says of Jeremy Reed, who helped craft the building’s unsettling environment.

Because much of the story unfolds indoors, the creative team had to transform the structure into something visually thrilling.

“The movie mostly is inside of this Virgil building, so it’s all interior,” continues Sokolov. “Making an interior movie, you understand that people can get tired of staring at four walls, and you have to be very clever and creative in a way to make people excited – how to show the same sets differently, how to extend this world, even not leaving the place.”

The solution came from classic literature.

“The Virgil is a nine-floor building, because we used Dante’s ‘Inferno’ as inspiration, where every floor is literally a different circle of hell. That gave us this idea of how we dress the floors, what kind of theme belongs to each floor, what is actually happening on that floor. So, we used this structure to develop the visual style and design of the place.”

The concept allows the building to evolve visually and thematically as the story progresses—turning the structure itself into a character.

A Condo From Hell in the Middle of the City

Originally, the building was imagined as a remote and ominous tower. However, co-writer Alex Litvak says the team quickly realized a different approach would be even more disturbing.

Instead of isolation, they placed The Virgil right in the heart of the city.

“But we quickly pivoted and landed on the idea of an exclusive condo complex in the heart of the city – a seemingly welcoming Rosemary’s Baby-style community most would kill [or die] to live in. That helped fuel some of the film’s themes: class, disposable people, the struggle to belong, to find a home, and the cost that comes with it. We also played with the idea that each floor represents a level of Hell. At one point the metaphor was more explicit, but we felt the building was starting to overshadow the characters, so we dialed that back.”

The shift opened the door to deeper themes.

Beneath the horror, the film explores class, belonging, and the cost of finding a home. The metaphor of Hell remained part of the concept, but the filmmakers eventually softened the symbolism so the characters could stay front and center.

Still, Litvak hints that the terrifying idea might extend far beyond this one building.

“we think we’re only scratching the surface with the Virgil – and there may be more places like it all over the world…”

    Watch the Trailer Here:

    Escalating Action Across Every Floor

As the story climbs higher through The Virgil, the action grows increasingly wild.

Sokolov designed each level to deliver a new style of combat and spectacle.

“As we move from floor to floor, the world changes, the circles of hell changes, so the vibe of the fights and the choreography also will be different.”

The progression starts with grounded fights before exploding into larger, more stylized sequences.

We start with very grounded and naturalistic fights, a little bit exaggerated. Then we go into some kind of Viking shit with epic scale and much more graphic. Then we go full anime, crazy kung fu type of fighting. They sound different, they look different and they feel different and, I hope, bigger and bigger and bigger and more and more exciting.

The goal: make each level bigger, louder, and more exhilarating than the last.

    Horror Masters Behind the Madness

The project gained extra momentum thanks to its producers: Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, the creative force behind modern horror hits “It,” “It Chapter Two,” and “Mama.”

For Litvak, their involvement felt like the perfect match.

“When we took the script to market, we were fortunate to have two competing buyers. For us, the goal wasn’t just to sell the script – it was to make the movie without losing the unconventional style and the inspired madness we had baked into the pages. The moment we met Andy and Barbara, it was clear we weren’t dealing with producers so much as fellow artists who immediately understood what we were trying to do. They believed in the tone of the film and supported our mission from the start. That ultimately made the choice to go with them a no-brainer, and it turned out to be the best decision we could have made.”

Their support ensured the filmmakers could preserve the script’s wild imagination and dark humor from page to screen.

    Enter The Virgil—If You Dare

Blending explosive action, outrageous horror, and wickedly sharp comedy, “They Will Kill You” promises a uniquely bold theatrical experience.

Everyone is invited to step inside The Virgil—just don’t expect to make it out alive.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Hilda Koronel’s Ever-Powerful Presence is Out in Full Force in “Sisa”

MOVIE REVIEW: Hilda Koronel’s Ever-Powerful Presence is Out in Full Force in “Sisa”

There is a theatricality in Jun Lana’s filmmaking for his film Sisa that heightens the film’s themes, emphasizing the tyranny of colonialism and “colonial mentality” while underscoring the vulnerability of women, not just during war, but at all times. The film opens with a tighter aspect ratio, a box frame reminiscent of classic cinema with stunning cinematography by Carlo Mendoza.

Set during the tail end of the Philippine-American War, the story focuses on one of the concentration camps established to force the insurgents to surrender by holding entire villages hostage by American soldiers. Throughout the film, Lana and Mendoza utilize uncomfortably tight shots, crazy angles, shifting aspect ratios, and vibrant tracking shots to really emphasize the tension and emotional weight of these characters within this narrative. Oftentimes, the mise-en-scene pushes the actors to move towards a gorgeous tableau, creating singular images that emphasize the film’s core theme.

This stylistic treatment allows Sisa to sidestep realism and focus on delivering its message. The film is not so much as a complete narrative, but more of a rallying cry. It’s an illustration of the horrors of war and how much worse it is for women.

The story of Sisa unfolds in one of these concentration camps, where a seemingly crazy woman enters and attacks a guard. When brought to his commanding officers, they take pity on her and allow the villagers to take care of her. Not knowing her name or where she’s from, the village children call her “Sisa,” after the woman in Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere.

There, Sisa becomes part of the community, living under Delia’s home, doing chores and visiting every nook and cranny of the camp. Within the first ten minutes, it becomes clear that Sisa is not the “crazy woman” she appears to be. By the end of the first act, we discover that she’s a spy working with the insurgents planning a take over of the camp.

However, nothing is ever that easy as the town is primarily left with the women, most of the men are either dead, imprisoned, or have fled to join the insurrection. But then again, women are fiercer and stronger than anyone ever thinks they are, and Sisa must work quickly to turn this village of women into members of the revolution.

While the film contains elements of a spy film or a caper, Sisa doesn’t fully operate within those genres. Instead, Lana focuses his attention on the manner by which women are oppressed by both patriarchy and colonialism. He focuses on the way the Americans utilize education and the teaching of English to sway the youth, seen in the way Delia’s daughter, Nena, begins to feel connected with them. For others, like Leonor, who is courted by the camp commander, Eddie Harrison. She is treated better, granted better rations, and because of this, she is shunned by the rest of the community.

Sisa, as both outsider and informant, becomes our eyes and ears. Through her observations, we process, we watch as the patriarchy and colonialism tear away at identity and the will to resist, forcing the colonized into subservient roles to please their oppressors.

After a thirteen-year hiatus, Hilda Koronel returns to the screen to bring Sisa to life. Even with very little backstory, Koronel manages to infuse the role with a history and layers underneath her character’s charade. This is a multi-faceted role that she carries effortlessly, while leading the ensemble forward.

Adding more talents into the production is Eugene Domingo as Delia, who is a force of nature. Completely removed from her comedic persona, Domingo reveals a totally different side of her and the effect is strong. Also delivering a standout performance is Jennica Garcia, whose Leonor is swept up in the confusion of her situation. She feels safe and protected by the commander that she has forgotten how the Americans have turned her into a widow. Her character’s eventual spiral in the film when she discovers the full extent of what the war has done to her and the people around her is arresting, a performance well worth watching.

Sisa is a gorgeous film, designed to push images and themes rather than to unfold a cohesive story. By looking at our past and allowing us to fully grasp what our country had to go through during the transfer of power from one colonial empire to another, we begin to understand how difficult it is for us to unite like other countries have. The sins of these oppressions is part of our lineage which we have yet to shake off. Like many characters in the film, we’d be happy to take scraps and morsels from our tyrants and be genuinely grateful to them while they work us to the bone and treat us less than human. Much like Sisa, we must look beyond the surface and start rousing ourselves to push back and unshackle ourselves from this idea that whatever is foreign is good for us. This movie couldn’t have come at a better time, with more and more stories about women fighting back taking center stage and in the world of politics, America has shown that their public image of being a benevolent protector of democracy is a complete lie. Sisa pulls no punches in delivering this message, clear as day, emboldening us to finally follow suit.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: “Project Hail Mary”: An Untimely Fantasy

MOVIE REVIEW: “Project Hail Mary”: An Untimely Fantasy

There’s something about Project Hail Mary that makes it feel better suited for a different time. Based on the novel by Andy Weir, the same novelist who also wrote the book for Ridley Scott’s 2015 hit The Martian was based on, there are many similarities between both films. It’s a science fiction movie where the science is made fun and comprehensible for the average viewer, maintaining a tone that’s light-hearted, feel-good, and inspiring. With directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and a screenplay by Drew Goddard, the film is really in good hands. With Ryan Gosling as the lead, there is simply no reason for this film to fail.

And for the most part, it doesn’t. Project Hail Mary’ tells the story of Dr. Ryland Grace (Gosling), who wakes up on a spaceship en route to the star Tau Ceti. He initially doesn’t remember who he is nor why he is the only crew member on the ship to survive. As his memories start to return, we discover that a cosmic event has brought an alien organism – dubbed “Astrophage” – through space, which has begun to “eat the sun.” Dr. Grace is part of a global team of scientists who try to understand Astrophage and how to stop it before it destroys all life on Earth. Only one star doesn’t seem to be affected by Astrophage and that’s the star Tau Ceti. On his way to complete his mission – investigate Tau Ceti and why it isn’t being consumed by the cosmic microorganism, Grace discovers another alien species also trying to investigate Tau Ceti. Despite the language barrier, the two figure out how to communicate, and Grace and “Rocky” join forces to save both their planets.

The film is a lengthy 156 minutes, with the first forty minutes detailing the specifics of the mission and how Grace – a disgraced molecular biologist, who is teaching in middle school – becomes part of the space mission. There, he interacts with the project commander, Eva Stratt (a magnificent Sandra Huller), as he tries to understand the science to get them into space.

Then the following act focuses on how Grace and Rocky (voiced and lead puppeteer James Ortiz) establish first contact and form their bond. Finally, the last forty minutes or so bring the mission to its conclusion. It’s a very loaded film, but the pacing is extremely quick and a lot of things are happening that it never feels boring.

The film bombards you with nostalgia as they play very familiar songs, mostly from the ’90s and early 2000s (though I did catch a few older songs as well), while finding heart and humor in the interactions between Gosling’s Grace and Rocky. Their shared need to save their planets has turned two very, very different personalities into great friends. It’s so refreshing, though, to see a world so quick to cooperate; even the idea that the whole world stopped fighting each other to gather their resources and talents to form this project, which they called Hail Mary. For some reason, I find it easier to believe in an alien such as Rocky exists but I am having such a hard time believing in a world coming together to stop ourselves from becoming extinct.

This is where I feel the film seems to be lost in time. It has fantastic visual effects, creating gorgeous cosmic and interplanetary imagery for Grace and Rocky to inhabit. The action sequences on the spaceship are deeply engaging, and Daniel Pemberton’s score lends a grand, epic scale to the proceedings trying to make it feel as big as it is. In all honesty, every individual part of this film works so beautifully. It is an enjoyable film; I even found myself gasping and holding back tears during two sections because of how well the story unfolds and allows us to really invest in its characters. Gosling is at his most charming, considering the scene partner he spends most time with is an alien puppet and, in flashbacks, the cold and guarded Eva Stratt. Yet, there’s a kindness and hope to the film that feels so tone deaf in a world currently in the throes of World War III.

It doesn’t help that, later on in the film, we discover some very unsavory truths that really begs the question: is the human race really worth saving? Perhaps the film’s ending is Lord and Miller’s way of injecting a bit of cynicism and commentary into the proceedings. By all respects, Project Hail Mary is a really good film. I just wished it had been released earlier, before this global mess we currently find ourselves in. The timing undermines the film’s good intentions. I laughed, I was moved, and I held back tears, but it was the moment I left the cinema, that the film started to feel empty. Instead of being hopeful and inspiring, the film ended up feeling like an escapist fantasy.

Is Project Hail Mary the hopeful escape we need right now, or is it just too far-fetched for 2026? Catch it while it’s still on the big screen and let us know: are you team “Science” or team “Cynicism”?

“Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” Brings a Deadlier Game to PH Cinemas This March

    The Deadly Game Continues

Grace survived the night — but the game isn’t over yet.

In “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” the shocking events of the 2019 horror hit expand into a far more dangerous battlefield. What once seemed like a single family’s twisted tradition turns out to be part of something much larger, and far more ruthless.

From L to R Nestor Carbonell Sarah Michelle Gellar Shawn Hatosy Elijah Wood and Nadeem Umar Khitab in READY OR NOT 2 HERE I COME

This time, Grace isn’t alone. Standing beside her is Faith, her estranged sister, who suddenly finds herself dragged into the nightmare. Together, they must navigate a brutal new round of the deadly ritual — one that now involves multiple powerful families with everything to gain and nothing to lose.

And for Grace, survival is no longer enough.

A Bigger Game With Deadlier Stakes

The first film ended with Grace barely escaping the Le Domas family’s sinister game of hide-and-seek. Bloodied but victorious, she seemed to have reached the end of the nightmare.

However, the sequel reveals a terrifying truth.

Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton in READY OR NOT 2 HERE I COME1

The Le Domas family was only one piece of a much larger power structure. Now four rival families are hunting Grace and Faith, all competing for control of the High Seat of the Council, the mysterious authority that governs them all.

In this ruthless competition, the rules are simple: win the game and claim ultimate power — or die trying.

Grace must once again rely on her instincts, resilience, and sheer determination as the hunt escalates into an all-out battle for survival.

Filmmakers Expand the World of the Game

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence, saw the ending of the original film as an opportunity rather than a conclusion.

“From the very beginning, the idea was not to be precious about anything,” says Bettinelli-Olpin. “The first movie ended definitively, and that gave us permission, and freedom, to go bigger, bloodier, and wilder.”

Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton in READY OR NOT 2 HERE I COME2

For Gillett, the sequel is about expanding the universe behind the deadly tradition.

“The sequel isn’t escalation for its own sake — it’s escalation with conviction. “We know this world, and now we stretch it in every direction.”

As a result, the film promises a more expansive story filled with intense confrontations, dark humor, and unexpected twists.

Samara Weaving Leads a Star-Studded Cast

Samara Weaving reprises her role as Grace, the determined bride who captured audiences with her fierce will to survive.

Joining the franchise is Kathryn Newton as Faith, whose arrival adds both emotional stakes and fresh tension to the story.

Elijah Wood in READY OR NOT 2 HERE I COME

The sisters must face a formidable group of hunters played by an impressive ensemble cast that includes:

    • Sarah Michelle Gellar (Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer)
    • Shawn Hatosy (The Pitt, The Faculty)
    • Nestor Carbonell (The Dark Knight)
    • David Cronenberg (The Fly)
    • Elijah Wood (The Monkey)

With such a powerhouse lineup, the hunt promises to be more unpredictable and dangerous than ever.

Early screenings of “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” run from March 20 to 22 in select cinemas, giving audiences a chance to see the film before its wide release.
