MOVIE REVIEW: Drama in Search of a Story — Sinag Maynila’s “Desperada”

Directed by Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio and written by Dennis C. Evangelista, Desperada is a film that feels more focused with melodrama than it is about fleshing out its characters and capturing striking images for impact rather than illumination. While the film tackles rather complex social issues, it often relies on transgressiveness to get a reaction rather than to subvert our biases.

The film opens in a cemetery, where Brenda (Robb Guinto) wanders naked through the darkness, confused and lost. She is found by a woman (played by Sue Prado) who runs a shelter and invites Brenda to stay until she recovers. There, she meets others on the fringes of society, each grappling with their own psychosis and disorders. While this setting offers ample opportunity to talk about how the system has failed the most vulnerable, yet the film chooses to zero in on their fleeting joys and breakdowns. Brenda soon becomes the object of another ward, Hesus (Mhack Morales) while later, Brenda sees a childhood friend and her ex-boyfriend, Lucio (Yasser Marta), who eventually joins them at the shelter. But Lucio is a chaotic force that tests Brenda’s resolve to heal. He’s an addict and is constantly thinking about sex and his presence breaks the relative harmony of the shelter.

    Desperada
    Desperada

While there’s plenty of opportunity to get real character work done in this film, Desperada doesn’t do any of the hard work required to flesh out the wards’ dysfunctions or psychoses. Funnily enough, the three characters who enter the shelter – Brenda, Lucio, and a character played by Jorge Guda – arrive broken, screaming, or listless, only to become instantly lucid after a single bath. Hesus is quick to fall in love with Brenda and maintains this affection throughout the film though the movie never really gives us any indication what it is in Brenda that caught his attention.

Brenda’s journey is the only one among the wards that resembles an arc, yet it is so rushed that it lacks the necessary narrative beats to feel fully realized. At the beginning, we her brought into the shelter, plagued by panic attacks; we see Hesus shower her with affection, and then the arrival of Lucio. Her physical desires are manifested, only for her to pull away from Lucio’s destructive force. Eventually, she finds her mother, who has been literally caged like an animal in the slums. She resolves her past quickly with one interaction from her one-dimensionally evil father but yet she can’t seem to let Lucio go. And while all these narrative beats are shown, it’s the steps that happen in-between that would ground this story but all we get is the highlight reel.

    Desperada
    Desperada

Aside from Brenda, it is the relationship between Sue Prado’s character and her lover (played by Mercedes Cabral) that really feels the most real. They are given moments to show their character’s good moments and weak moments. They get to have quiet moments to discuss the challenges they face running the shelter out of the kindness of their hearts, with Cabral’s character playing a former nun and Prado an orphan. Because most of their scenes unfod without explosive drama, we are able to truly see their humanity rather than just a mere spectacle of emotions.

    Desperada

At times, Robb Guinto and Mhack Morales have moments when they clearly articulate their character’s reality. Outside of the more seasoned Prado and Cabral, Guinto and Morales show a vulnerability, especially in their less dramatic scenes. In contrast, Yasser Marta and Jorge Guda are always performing at a constant “level 10,” almost at the level of camp. Guinto and Morales show better range and I feel that if the material was more nuanced, more fleshed-out, they would be able to give more in future roles.

    Desperada
    Desperada

Despite the screenplay’s weaknesses, the film is rather gorgeous to look at. Cinematographer TM Malones delivers gorgeous shots, especially when playing with darkness. He has a few cemetery scenes, which includes Guinto’s striking opening naked scene, that are visually stunning and the way he lights all of Brenda’s mother caged in a shanty creates an emotional effect which elevates the material away from camp.

Ultimately, Desperada is meant more to be more shocking and entertaining than it is groundbreaking. This is evident with the amount of sex scenes that feel unnecessary, the reliance on coarse language, and the way it uses a queer character for comedy. Lucky that Guinto is an arresting protagonist and Prado and Cabral give the film a grounding element that shows the film has way more potential that it allowed itself to explore.

    My Rating: 2 Stars

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s “The Drama” Explores Love, Secrets, and Truth — In PH Cinemas April 4

When Love Meets an Uncomfortable Truth

Everything is set for “happily ever after”—until it isn’t.

Pioneer Films Philippines brings The Drama to the big screen this April 4, uniting Zendaya and Robert Pattinson in a striking romantic dark comedy helmed by Kristoffer Borgli, the mind behind Sick of Myself and Dream Scenario. Equal parts charming and unsettling, the film peels back the layers of a seemingly perfect relationship—and exposes what lies beneath.

    2 4

A Love Story That Feels Too Good to Be True

Charlie Thompson (Robert Pattinson), a British museum curator, crosses paths with Emma Harwood (Zendaya), a sharp literary editor, in a cozy Cambridge café. Sparks fly instantly. Before long, their connection blossoms into a whirlwind romance that feels effortless and, perhaps, a little too perfect.

Wedding plans follow. The future looks certain. Everything aligns—until a single moment begins to undo it all.

    The Drama Still 1

A Game That Changes the Rules

During a casual night with friends Rachel (Alana Haim) and Mike (Mamoudou Athie), a seemingly harmless question is thrown into the mix: “What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?”

What starts as playful honesty quickly takes a sharp turn.

One confession—unexpected and impossible to ignore—cracks the foundation of Charlie and Emma’s relationship. Doubts creep in, emotions intensify, and the couple finds themselves confronting truths they may not be ready to face, just days before their wedding.

    Watch the Trailer here:

The Fragile Balance Between Truth and Love

Robert Pattinson highlights the film’s turning point with chilling clarity:

“You think you know someone, and they can say literally one sentence that maybe they don’t even realize they are saying,” says Pattinson. “Suddenly everything has changed, and you can’t put the genie back in the bottle.”

Zendaya reflects on the story’s emotional weight, noting how it challenges traditional ideas of romance:

“This is Kristoffer Borgli’s version of the romantic comedy, asking us how much we’re willing to accept from another person in the name of love,” she shares. “When everything is out on the table between two people, what’s left over in a relationship on the eve of saying ‘I do’?” It’s a question that lingers—how much truth can love really hold?”

It’s not just about what is revealed—but what those revelations mean.

    1 6

    A Modern Take on Relationships

Kristoffer Borgli presents The Drama as an unfiltered look at emotional honesty. The film questions whether complete transparency strengthens a relationship—or quietly destroys it.

“In your closest relationships, you should be able to share everything”.

As feelings collide with logic, and trust is pushed to its limits, Charlie and Emma must decide whether their bond can survive the weight of truth—or if some things are better left unsaid.

The Ultimate Question Before “I Do”

Right before the vows, the film asks its audience to reflect:

    • Can love endure every secret?
    • Does truth always set us free—or does it complicate everything?
    • And when doubt enters the picture, can commitment still stand?
    THE DRAMA Poster

    Mark Your Calendars

Provocative, emotionally charged, and unexpectedly relatable, The Drama offers a refreshing twist on the romantic comedy genre—one that lingers long after the credits roll.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: A Very Bloody Sister-Bonding in “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come”

MOVIE REVIEW: A Very Bloody Sister-Bonding in “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come”

I wasn’t entirely sure if I wanted a sequel to the enjoyable Ready or Not. Starring Samara Weaving and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the original was fun and brutal, and it just seemed like a pleasant, refreshing surprise when it came out during the relatively peaceful times (in comparison to today) before the pandemic. It was a wonderful “little” movie that ended with a punch that left everything to the wild imagination of the audience to play with in their heads. Why, then, do a sequel?

In this updated version, I can’t help but see similarities and parallelisms with these elite families and the real-world discourse surrounding the Epstein Files. The film doesn’t shy away from comparisons to how the rich rule the world – evidenced by a hilarious scene that establishes the Danforth’s control over media and global politics in an earlier scene – and how they own everything, down to the police.

Luckily, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett return alongside with screenwriters Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy to expand on the world and to really explore the cult that Samara Weaving’s Grace’s in-laws were a part of. To raise the stakes and to really get down into Grace’s character, the sequel introduces her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) along for the ride. The story picks up exactly where we left off in the first movie: the Le Domas mansion is on fire, and Grace is having a cigarette as the paramedics and police come to the rescue. However, her injuries send her into unconsciousness. She wakes up in a hospital, not a victim, but as a suspect for arson and murder. When her emergency contact, which is Faith arrives, it reopens old wounds. There is a palpable friction between them, a huge rift caused by unsaid words and broken promises. Yet, they don’t get to hash this out properly, as members of the Council, the cult the Le Domas family were part of, arrive to take Grace.

Once again, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come pits the ordinary folks against the elite class; the obscenely wealthy families who run the world and who can get away with anything. Due to a complex set of rules, which adds dark humor while giving Grace a sort of fighting chance. Grace and Faith must survive until dawn as representatives from the five of the six families (the Le Domas line are now gone) try to bring her down as a means to wrestle control for the seat of power. Leading this ruthless charge are Ursula and Titus Danforth (Sarah Michelle Gellar and Shawn Hatosy), the current titleholders for the seat of power.

Their vast wealth makes them inhuman, portrayed by their lack of respect for any other human being other than those of the family and their idiosyncrasies and individual indulgences. Strangely enough, they only abide by the Council’s rules because a supernatural force holds them at bay. They only respond to a higher power.

But the film is never political. It’s there in the imagery and in the drama of Grace and Faith, two orphans from the foster system, trying to stay alive as the elite hunt them down like sport. Instead, the film is centers on whether Grace and Faith can resolve their rift long enough to see the dawn. It is a film focused on brutal and bloody fight scenes, massive explosions, and darkly humorous takedowns. One hilarious fight scene between Grace and Francesca (Maia Jae), the daughter of a rival family and was the fiancee of the Le Domas son whom Grace married instead. Both dressed in wedding gowns – Grace wearing hers for practicality’s sake while Francesca wore hers as a symbol of her rage – they go at it in full force at an empty ballroom, using anything they can get their hands on, and with a handicap (I won’t spoil it here but it’s hilarious).

Kathryn Newton and Samara Weaving in READY OR NOT 2: HERE I COME. Photo by Searchlight Pictures/Pief Weyman, Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. © 2026 Searchlight Pictures. All Rights Reserved.

Samara Weaving is in fine form as Grace. Exhausted and frustrated, yet emboldened by her previous survival, she is unafraid to be brutal, delivering a performance with her entire body. She gives it enough seriousness to make the world believable, while simultaneously camps it up to match the film’s overall tone. Kathryn Newton serves as a great counterpoint to Weaving, allowing Faith to be completely overwhelmed by the proceedings but quickly matches her sister’s ferocity at a believable pace.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come
Elijah Wood in READY OR NOT 2: HERE I COME. Photo by Searchlight Pictures/Pief Weyman, Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. © 2026 Searchlight Pictures. All Rights Reserved.

Meanwhile, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Shawn Hatosy offer an interesting brother-sister dynamic. With Hatosy going full-on rich boy psychopath, while Gellar, as expected, finds a nuanced approach. Allowing Ursula a little more texture and layers that makes her interesting, even if the script never digs too deep into it. Gellar truly makes fantastic work of the limited material she’s been given.

Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton in READY OR NOT 2: HERE I COME. Photo by Searchlight Pictures/Pief Weyman, Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. © 2026 Searchlight Pictures. All Rights Reserved.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come doesn’t necessarily do anything different from the first movie; instead, it expands the world, makes the enemies tougher and crazier, and provides Grace someone who brings out more of her character. The film is hard rebuke of a world where billionaires can get away with anything and everything, yet it does it by having a lot of bloody, brutal violent fun in the process. It is a riotous survival story that remains funny all the way.

    My Rating: 3.5 Stars

Chris Pratt Reflects on Mario’s Heroic Spirit

For Chris Pratt, stepping back into Mario’s role was an exciting opportunity to bring the beloved character’s determination and optimism to life once again.

Pratt believes Mario’s true strength lies in his unwavering belief in himself and the people he loves.

“He is a little guy, but he never gives up,” Pratt says. “He is unstoppable because he believes in himself. He is not boastful; he just shows up for the people he cares about. I love his relationships with his brother, his family and with Peach. No challenge is too big for him, and that is what makes him heroic.”

The film’s strong focus on brotherhood also resonated deeply with Pratt, who grew up playing the games alongside his own sibling.

“My brother and I grew up playing the Super Mario games together,” Pratt says. “The film captures something true about having siblings. You know each other your whole life. You go through everything together. Some relationships are fleeting, but siblings are for life. It means a lot to be able to bring that to the screen. When we were kids, my brother always got to play as Mario. Now I finally get my turn.”

Charlie Day on Luigi’s Courage and Charm

Charlie Day was equally excited to revisit Luigi, a character known for balancing fear with loyalty and bravery.

“Luigi has that underdog sensibility,” Day says. “With Mario, you get the classic hero who runs toward danger to save the day. With Luigi, you have the guy who says, ‘I want to save the day, but I also do not want to get hurt,’ and I think that makes him relatable.”

Despite his hesitation, Luigi’s devotion to his brother drives him forward.

“His innocence is something you root for, because he loves his brother enough to follow him anywhere.”

The actor also reflected on the emotional connection many fans have with the Mario universe.

“I have a son who is fourteen now, and watching this movie, I became emotional remembering how much joy these games gave me as a kid,” Day says. “I would play with my sister and my friends, and we would get lost in this world. Both through the movie and through watching my son discover gaming on his own brings me back to that time. That is the power of this world.”

Playful and inventive, the film presents a charming premise: a flock of sheep that quietly learns the art of deduction from nightly detective stories. When an unexpected incident disrupts their peaceful farm life, the unlikely group decides it’s time to apply everything they’ve learned.

The Shepherd Who Loves a Good Mystery

At the center of the story is George (Hugh Jackman), a gentle shepherd who has a comforting habit. Each evening, he reads classic detective novels to his flock before bedtime. For George, it’s simply a relaxing routine.

What he doesn’t realize, however, is that the sheep are paying very close attention.

Word by word, clue by clue, they absorb the lessons from every mystery tale he shares. Over time, the flock develops a surprisingly sharp sense of observation and deduction.

When the Sheep Become the Detectives

Life on the farm changes when a mysterious incident suddenly shakes their quiet routine. With their shepherd unaware of their secret intelligence, the sheep quietly step forward to investigate.

Using the knowledge they’ve gathered from countless detective stories, the flock begins examining clues, observing suspicious behavior, and considering possible suspects among the humans around them.

The result is a lighthearted whodunit filled with humor, charm, and plenty of clever moments. After all, even the most underestimated investigators might hold the key to solving the case.
