MOVIE REVIEW: For the Fans: A Review of ‘Mortal Kombat II’

I don’t even remember the 2021 film Mortal Kombat, which Mortal Kombat II is the sequel. However, this latest release from the franchise leans so heavily into its video game lore and mode that you don’t need to have seen the first film (or even remember it) to follow the story. It’s not completely bonkers that it shifts gears into the level of camp; Mortal Kombat II is not taking itself too seriously, either. It knows its selling points: it has characters to present, action sequences to highlight, and brutal kills to show off that is reminiscent of the video game the whole IP is based on.

The story begins in the past, detailing how Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen) and Kitara (Adeline Rudolph) joined the side of the Outworld, led by Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). This piece of history explains how Outworld conquered the realm of Edenia. A decade later, Outworld is after Earthrealm, and Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) gathers his champions to prepare for Mortal Kombat to protect the planet. His champions include returning characters Sonya (Jessica McNamee), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), and Cole Young (Lewis Tan). They travel to Earth to recruit a new champion: washed-up action star Johnny Cage (Karl Urban). While the tournament will decide the fate of Earthrealm, but there are things happening underneath the surface that threaten to change the outcome of the game.

Mortal Kombat II is a fast-paced fantasy and action-adventure film that feels thin on story, largely because it works too hard to give every character a chance to have their moment. Kitara begins the story and has the character with the clearest goal, yet she lacks a true character arc. Those arcs belongs to Johnny Cage and Kitara’s bodyguard and friend, Jade (Tati Gabrielle). However, the narrative is crowded: Liu Kang gets his moment, Kano (Josh Lawson) is resurrected and he gets a lot of screen time because his character is so fun and there’s a lot of plot going on in Shao Kahn’s group involving Quan Chi (Damon Herriman) and Shang Tsung (Chi Han). Consequently, the film never really feels grounded; Johnny Cage’s character development is often glossed over with a punchline, while Jade’s story is the most developed but her character is relegated to a supporting cast.

And because this is Mortal Kombat, we see the return of Sub Zero/Bi Han (Joe Taslim) and Scorpion/Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada). Of course, they too have to have their moment.

Since the movie is really meant for entertainment and to deliver fan service, there’s quite a number of logical inconsistencies that I’m willing to forgive. However, what I’m expecting, though, is really good fight scenes which the film delivers inconsistently. I’m not that sure of Karl Urban’s ability to fight but his fight scenes are the ones that are the most heavily edited to try and hide the switching of a stunt double. Many of Rudolph’s fights (except the one with Johnny Cage) and that of Gabrielle were fun to watch but the real gem is the fight scene between Liu Kang and Kung Lao (Max Huang). It is fast, the choreography is stunning, the editing allows the viewer to still see the action, and it was dynamic without being overshadowed by the special effects. It’s this kind of fight scene that I hoped to see more of, yet there wasn’t a lot of it.

Because the film felt like it was intended for fun and fan service, the finale dragged on for quite a bit as two different storylines. In the form of two different fight scenes, The constant cutting back and forth between these two battles extends the action beyond what feels comfortable. But as one-character bows out, another takes their place, and the scene extends some more. It gets a little out of hand. Ultimately, Mortal Kombat II is chaotic, messy, has a lot of story inconsistencies or easy plot fixes, and the fight scenes are not at all balanced out. However, for serious fans of the lore, there is still a lot here to enjoy. The audience at my screening were obviously fans, taking the time to ask questions about where this character showed up and if what’s mentioned is part of the official story canon or not.

    My Rating: 2.5 Stars

  • QCinema Awards ₱3.5 Million to Five Emerging Filipino Filmmakers for 2026 QCShorts

QCinema Awards ₱3.5 Million to Five Emerging Filipino Filmmakers for 2026 QCShorts

The QCinema International Film Festival has unveiled the five recipients of its 2026 QCShorts Production Grant, awarding a combined ₱3.5 million ($57,817) to promising Filipino filmmakers set to create bold and compelling short films.

Selected from a record-breaking pool of 395 submissions, this year’s projects reflect the growing diversity of Philippine cinema, featuring stories rooted in regional cultures, queer experiences, political realities, folklore, and personal identity.

According to QCinema artistic director and newly appointed QC Screen Commission executive director Ed Lejano, the selection process highlighted the increasing presence of regional filmmakers and genre-driven storytelling.

“What stands out, even when we were shortlisting, are the increasing number of films from the regions and works that are deeply rooted in genre,” says Ed Lejano, QCinema’s artistic director and the newly appointed executive director of the QC Screen Commission. “Many of the titles that stood out use filmmaking, narrative conventions, satire, and even myths as a way to make sense of the violence, extremism, absurdity, and gross injustice happening today.”

Five New Voices Receive QCShorts Support

    The 2026 QCShorts grantees are:

    • Carla Pulido Ocampo – Agsangit Laeng ti Al-alia (A Ghost Can Only Howl)
    • Maki Makilan – Body Works
    • Toni Cañete – Maanaa Kanimo (With You)
    • Rodiell Veloso – Run Shirley Run!
    • Clister Santos – Sana’y Nandito Ka

Jason Tan Liwag, QCinema’s head of short film programming, noted that this year’s selections tackle themes of division, belonging, and emotional distance.

“This new batch of shorts all examine widening rifts between the individual and the family, between our bodies and beliefs,” says Jason Tan Liwag, head of short film programming. “Whether it’s about distant wars, fissures within communities, or personal alienation, we are committed to holding space for stories that are deeply political, regional, and quintessentially Filipino.”

“Maanaa Kanimo” Blends Faith and Queer Identity

Writer-director Toni Cañete brings a heartfelt queer coming-of-age story through Maanaa Kanimo (With You), produced by Tin Velasco and Micah Tadena.

Set within a close-knit community disrupted by the disappearance of a Mama Mary statue, the film follows two sisters navigating questions of morality, identity, and faith. Cañete, who comes from Cagayan de Oro City, has previously won recognition from the CCP Gawad Alternatibo and the Mindanao Film Festival.

Among the most unusual projects in this year’s lineup is Run Shirley Run!, a dark comedy queer body horror film written and directed by Rodiell Veloso and produced by Rajiv Idnani and Tomomi Furuyama.

Set in Mindanao, the story follows a suicidal manananggal whose body splits in two—one half longing for death while the other desperately clings to life. Chaos unfolds when aswang hunters and mischievous teenagers cross paths with the creature.

Veloso cites filmmakers Takashi Miike, Sion Sono, and Julia Ducournau as inspirations. He is also an alumnus of the Busan Asian Film School and Full Circle Lab Philippines.

Completing the roster is Sana’y Nandito Ka, an animated slice-of-life drama written and directed by Clister Santos and produced by Leon Lopez and Alex Poblete.

The film follows a young man reconnecting with his estranged mother after six years apart. Santos, a multimedia artist and CIIT College of Arts and Technology graduate, previously earned acclaim for his short film Ili-Ili (2023), which premiered at the 38th BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival and won Best Animation at the CCP Gawad Alternatibo 2024.

    Continuing the Legacy of QCShorts

Launched in 2016, the QCShorts Production Grant was established to support original Filipino storytelling through the short film format. Over the years, its grantees have gained recognition from major international festivals including Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, Locarno, Clermont-Ferrand, and Singapore.

Since its inception, QCinema has awarded ₱14.85 million ($245,237) to 56 short film projects from across the Philippines, showcasing a wide range of cinematic styles, languages, and perspectives.

The selection committee for this year’s QCShorts grant included Ed Lejano, Kints Kintana, Jason Tan Liwag, Philbert Dy, Iana Bernardez, Quark Henares, Venice Atienza, and Sam Manacsa.

The selected films are scheduled to make their world premieres during the 14th QCinema International Film Festival, happening from November 13 to 22, 2026.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘The Sheep Detectives’ Successfully Juggles Multiple Genres as Comedy, Whodunnit, and Social Commentary at the Same Time

When I first saw the trailer for The Sheep Detectives, I must admit I wasn’t impressed. It looked like a typical family-friendly story of anthropomorphic animals doing human things, in this case, solving a murder. It felt a little far-fetched to me and because the trailer seemed a little over-the-top, the jokes felt expected.

I was pleasantly surprised when I finally saw the film, though. Directed by Kyle Balda and written by Craig Mazin (adapting Leonie Swann’s novel ‘Three Bags Full’), the movie is funny, heartfelt, and engaging. There is an earnestness and sincerity to it that perfectly matches the demeanor of its wooly protagonists.

The characters, as sheep, serve as a clever metaphor for the larger societal metaphor the filmmakers intend to discuss, however they never do so in an overt way, allowing the film to maintain its light and whimsical tone.

In ‘The Sheep Detectives,’ we follow a herd of sheep cared for by George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), a bit of a loner who is grouchy and dismissive toward the townspeople that live near his farm but pours all his affection into his flock. He cares for them deeply, naming each one and reading them mystery novels at night. In this world, the sheep understand him, enjoy the detective stories, and love him just as equally. After a rainy night, George is found dead under circumstances that point to murder. In such a small town, the only policeman, Tim Derry (Nicholas Braun), is a bumbling fool who misses every significant clue. Now, the sheep, led by George’s favourite, Lily (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfuss), must solve the case on their own.

    The Sheep Detectives
(L to R) Nicholas Braun stars as Officer Tim Derry, Molly Gordon as Rebecca Hampstead, Kobna Holbrook-Smith as Reverend Hillcoate, Hong Chau as Beth Pennock, Conleth Hill as Ham Gilyard and Tosin Cole as Caleb Merrow in THE SHEEP DETECTIVES, from Amazon MGM Studios. Photo credit: Alex Bailey © 2026 Amazon Content Services LLC. All Rights Reserved.

Balda’s direction is fast-paced and easy to follow, allowing him to juggle the film’s various modes. On one hand, it is a coming-of-age story, as the sheep learn to become more active characters in their own lives and venture beyond the comforts of their farm. It is also a mystery film, hitting all the narrative beats of the genre and effectively playing out the whodunnit form. Then, quite subtly, the film also doubles as a social commentary, with the sheep becoming a clever metaphor for today’s modern society.

In the movie, the sheep possess the power to forget. The moment they encounter something distasteful, uncomfortable, or problematic, they can simply choose to forget it. Their reality and worldview are determined by what they allow themselves to remember. While this is an important story point for The Sheep Detectives, it is also a poignant metaphor for our current society’s inability to remember our history, hence we always find ourselves repeating the same mistakes as before.

The sheep are carefree and passive, and why shouldn’t they be? They are well-fed, cared for, groomed, and entertained, with all their needs met. What reason do they have to do anything radical or drastic? It is only when George dies that all this comfort is threatened. Before they can choose to forget to avoid the pain, the only sheep unable to do so, Mopple (Chris O’Dowd), reminds them that to truly love George, they must remember him. It’s an early part of the film that has powerful reverberations throughout the rest of the narrative.

There’s a lot that is happening under its 109-minute runtime. Each character is well-developed and fully realised, while the film effortlessly juggles its various genres and themes. It is funny and charming, yet still packs a punch the moment you see the metaphor for what it is.

    My Rating: 4.5 Stars

  • “Mortal Kombat II” Expands Iconic Game Worlds in a Bigger, Bloodier Cinematic Sequel — Now Showing in Cinemas

“Mortal Kombat II” Expands Iconic Game Worlds in a Bigger, Bloodier Cinematic Sequel — Now Showing in Cinemas

The fight returns on a much bigger scale in “Mortal Kombat II,” and fans are already celebrating the sequel’s intense action, expanded mythology, and unforgettable game-inspired worlds.

“This movie is a love letter to MK fans. Fantastic sets, killer fights, and an upgrade in story telling all around. Will see multiple times! ,” raves a fan about “Mortal Kombat II” on Rotten Tomatoes.

    expecttoseemortalkombatlevelsandworldsthatfansknow

Now showing only in cinemas and IMAX, the highly anticipated sequel pushes the franchise into thrilling new territory while staying faithful to the legendary video game series.

    Expanding the Mortal Kombat Universe

After the success of the first film, director Simon McQuoid and the creative team wanted the sequel to feel larger, richer, and more immersive for longtime fans.

“My job as a director is to create, with all the elements, a tone, a very specific tone,” says director Simon McQuoid. “And that tone is to hold the audience in a state of wonder. And so all the choices – whether they be sets, lenses, costumes – it’s all to build that tone.”

That vision shaped every aspect of the production, from the costumes and cinematography to the elaborate set designs that transport viewers across multiple realms.

    7 1

Producer Todd Garner revealed that the sequel finally gave the filmmakers the opportunity to fully explore the iconic environments from the games.

“The production designer, Yohei Taneda, and the art department did an incredible job on this film. During the first movie, we were very limited in the locations and sets we could shoot in. But we were given the opportunity in this movie to open the world up, go to different realms, and expand the world to include several Mortal Kombat levels and worlds that fans know and love.”

    Building Four Distinct Fantasy Worlds

Acclaimed production designer Yohei Taneda, whose credits include Kill Bill Vol. 1 and The Hateful Eight, played a major role in bringing the film’s larger world to life.

According to Taneda, the chance to create several unique fantasy settings in one movie immediately captured his imagination.

“Kill Bill: Vol. 1,” “mentioned that I’d be able to create four different fantasy worlds in this one movie. And I was really inspired by that. Four different worlds in one movie! That’s a lot of work. But it gives you an idea of the scale and dimension of this film.”

Instead of relying entirely on digital concepts, Taneda preferred sketching his ideas by hand before presenting them to McQuoid.

    4 1

One of the most visually ambitious locations is Edenia, designed with a blend of European and Asian influences. The realm evolves throughout the story, shifting from a vibrant kingdom into a darker and more corrupted world under Shao Kahn’s rule.

“I sketched the entire town of Edenia and the Castle. It has a European feel to it, but I wanted to add my own touch with a bit more of an Asian feel as well, and that made a nice balance. We also see a transition in the town from the reign of King Jerrod, where it’s green and beautiful, but then it turns into something quite dead and ugly under Shao Kahn. I enjoyed being able to design both. I found it interesting that I was able to tell so much of the story just in that one set. Netherrealm began as a futuristic city, with something of a sci-fi nature. But then I had the idea of taking some inspiration from Escher, the Dutch painter.”

Meanwhile, Netherrealm was envisioned with futuristic sci-fi elements inspired by the surreal artwork of Dutch artist M.C. Escher.

    Iconic Mortal Kombat Arenas Return

Fans of the games can also expect the return of some of the franchise’s most recognizable battlegrounds, including The Pit and Deadpool.

Taneda understood the importance of recreating these legendary arenas faithfully for fans.

“I didn’t want to disappoint with my design for the Pit,” says the production designer. “With Deadpool, I focused more on the sort of materials that we would use, especially the rocks and the stones, to make it as physical and as authentic as possible. And then with the Sky Temple, I didn’t want to focus on just one culture. So I added a Japanese element to the Chinese style.”

For Deadpool, the production team focused on practical textures and realistic materials to make the environment feel grounded and physical. The visually striking Sky Temple also combines Japanese and Chinese influences, adding another layer of detail to the film’s world-building.

In “Mortal Kombat II,” Earthrealm’s champions face their deadliest challenge yet as the ruthless Shao Kahn threatens the survival of humanity itself.

Joining the battle is fan-favorite fighter Johnny Cage, portrayed by Karl Urban.

    The film’s cast also includes:

    • Adeline Rudolph
    • Jessica McNamee
    • Josh Lawson
    • Ludi Lin
    • Mehcad Brooks
    • Tati Gabrielle
    • Lewis Tan
    • Damon Herriman
    • Chin Han
    • Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden
    • Joe Taslim as Bi-Han
    • Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion
    Mortal Kombat II Martyn Ford

Directed by Simon McQuoid, the sequel delivers larger battles, more brutal fatalities, and a deeper exploration of the franchise’s mythology.

Critics Praise the Sequel’s Action and Scale

Early reviews have highlighted the film’s commitment to delivering the intense action and spectacle fans expect from the franchise.

    MovieWeb described the sequel as:

“‘Mortal Kombat II’ is a marked improvement over the first film for all the right reasons,” wrote MovieWeb in their review. “It doubles down on what made the games popular and brings in a known commodity with Urban to shoulder the acting burden. McQuoid does not disappoint in his second stab at the franchise, providing red meat to loyal legions without any attempt to stray from the fantastic source material.”

Collider also praised the movie as:

“A bloody good time and a bone-crunching spectacle.”

With jaw-dropping visuals, fierce combat, and fan-favorite characters stepping into the spotlight, “Mortal Kombat II” aims to give audiences a cinematic experience worthy of the iconic franchise. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

New “Scary Movie” Poster Revealed as Anna Faris and the Wayans Reunite After 25 Years — in Cinemas June 10

The screams, the chaos, and the outrageous comedy are back. A brand-new poster for Scary Movie has officially been unveiled, teasing the return of one of the most iconic parody franchises in movie history.

    2 copy

Opening in Philippine cinemas on June 10, the latest installment reunites original stars Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall for the first time in 25 years — a comeback horror-comedy fans have been eagerly waiting for.

This time around, absolutely no horror franchise is safe.

The Core Four Return for More Madness

After decades away from the franchise, the beloved cast returns to face another round of terrifying — and hilariously ridiculous — situations. Whether it’s masked killers, supernatural nightmares, or modern “elevated horror,” Scary Movie is ready to parody every trend dominating cinemas today.

SCARY MOVIE Every line will be crossed 4X5

The newly released poster hints at a blood-soaked, laugh-out-loud adventure packed with the over-the-top humor and fearless energy that made the original films global hits.

Alongside the returning stars are Kenan Thompson, Damon Wayans Jr., Sydney Park, Heidi Gardner, and several fresh faces joining the mayhem.

Every Horror Trope Is Fair Game

    The official synopsis reads:

Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer (“Ghostface”), the Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs and no horror movie IP is safe. Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite in Scary Movie alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final. Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.

With sharp comedy and relentless pop culture references, the movie aims to deliver the same wildly entertaining formula that helped define early 2000s parody films.

    A Reunion Behind the Scenes

The film also marks a reunion for the Wayans family creatives who shaped the original franchise. Produced by Rick Alvarez, Craig Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans, the movie is directed by Michael Tiddes.
