All Aboard! ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Trains Swing Into LRT-1 and LRT-2, in Cinemas July 29

Metro Manila commuters are in for a super-powered surprise.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has taken over select trains on LRT-1 and LRT-2, transforming the familiar daily commute into a moving Marvel showcase. Wrapped from end to end in artwork from the upcoming film, the trains feature Spider-Man, Hulk, and members of The Hand.

Whether you are heading to work, school, or your next city stop, keep an eye on the tracks. Your train might arrive with a friendly neighborhood hero on board.

A Heroic New Look for LRT-1

LRT-1 connects commuters traveling across Metro Manila from Fernando Poe Jr. Station, formerly Roosevelt, to Dr. Santos Station, formerly Sucat.

With 25 stations along the route, the line serves passengers heading to several major schools and universities. Vito Cruz Station provides access to De La Salle University and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, while Pedro Gil Station is near the University of the Philippines Manila. United Nations Station is close to Adamson University, and Central Terminal Station is convenient for Mapúa University and Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

The line also brings passengers near some of Manila’s well-known attractions, including Rizal Park, Intramuros, and the Pasig River Esplanade.

Now, commuters traveling along the route may also spot an impressive “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” train brightening up their journey.

    Spider-Man Takes Over LRT-2

The superhero excitement continues on LRT-2, which runs between Recto and Antipolo.

The 13-station railway serves thousands of commuters traveling between the eastern and western sides of the metro. Recto Station connects passengers to LRT-1 through Doroteo Jose Station, while Araneta Center-Cubao Station provides access to MRT-3. Katipunan Station is also a key stop for students heading toward Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines Diliman.

With the movie-themed train now traveling along the line, even an ordinary trip could turn into a memorable Spider-Man sighting.

Peter Parker Faces a Powerful New Threat

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” follows Peter Parker as he adjusts to a world that no longer remembers him.

Now fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man, Peter watches his former friends continue their lives without him. The emotional pressure begins to trigger a transformation that he may not be able to control.

That same transformation, however, could be the only force capable of stopping a dangerous new threat to the city and the people he loves. Making the challenge even more terrifying, the villain is someone no one can see.

    IMG 1032

The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he has not forgotten the people he promised to protect.

“It’s quite emotional, but it’s also a lot of fun,” director Destin Daniel Cretton says of the film.

Cretton directs a cast led by Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Spider-Man. The film also stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo.

  • Rave Reviews Call “Evil Dead Burn” the Evilest Evil Dead Movie Yet, Now Showing in Cinemas

Rave Reviews Call “Evil Dead Burn” the Evilest Evil Dead Movie Yet, Now Showing in Cinemas

The Deadites Are Back, and They Are Going Harder Than Ever

Horror fans, brace yourselves. “Evil Dead Burn” has arrived in Philippine cinemas, and the early buzz is absolutely savage.

The newest entry in the legendary “Evil Dead” franchise is already earning fiery praise from critics and audiences, with early reviews describing it as “going harder than ever before.” The film also holds a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 80%, signaling a strong reception for this blood-soaked return to Deadite terror.

    EDB TP 025

One audience reaction captures the chaos perfectly: “The movie got me on edge from the start and the gore, bloody, cinematography, story, and characters were all so perfect.”

In other words, this is not your quiet, slow-burn horror night. This is full-force, no-mercy “Evil Dead” mayhem.

A Wedding Vow Turns Into a Nightmare

In “Evil Dead Burn,” Alice, played by Souheila Yacoub, is mourning the death of her husband alongside her in-laws. But as the night unfolds, grief gives way to something far more sinister.

One by one, the family members begin to turn into Deadites, forcing Alice into a brutal fight for survival. Worse, she soon discovers that her matrimonial vows may not have ended with death. Love, as it turns out, can be eternal in the most terrifying way possible.

    Watch the official trailer here:

Critics Are Calling It a Worthy Evil Dead Successor

Writer-director Sébastien Vaniček, hand-picked by producer Sam Raimi to take on the film, is receiving strong praise for honoring the franchise while pushing its horror into even darker territory.

Collider praises Vaniček’s sharp direction, writing, “There are some shots and sequences that are so expertly directed, it’s a shock to find out that this is only Vaniček’s second feature; it feels like he somehow manifested the spirits of every great Evil Dead director before him, especially during a delightfully bonkers finale that has some of the best shots in the entire franchise, which is saying something.

That is high praise for a franchise known for its wild visuals, shocking set pieces, and gleefully unhinged horror energy.

    EDB Thya2

“The Evilest Evil Dead Movie Yet”

The Wrap delivers one of the boldest reactions so far, calling “Evil Dead Burn” “The evilest ‘Evil Dead’ movie yet.”

The review adds, “You can’t fault “Evil Dead Burn” for showmanship. But Vaniček’s commitment to making his film a karmic reaction to real-life horrors — as opposed to acts of supernatural happenstance, affecting mostly innocent randos — gives “Evil Dead Burn” the most gruesome, grueling tone of any film in this long-running series.

For longtime fans, that means this new chapter does not simply repeat familiar scares. It sharpens them, twists them, and gives them a nastier emotional bite.

Practical Effects, Bloody Mayhem, and Dark Humor

Of course, no “Evil Dead” movie would feel complete without outrageous gore, wicked humor, and practical effects that make audiences squirm in their seats.

Variety notes how the film keeps the spirit of the franchise alive, writing, “As staged by the French director Sébastien Vaniček, the violence, while nonstop, remains aggressively “thematic,” as the bottled-up family tensions and angers come out in the form of gnashing, bashing, gouging, severing, impaling, dismembering. “Evil Dead Burn” should win the approval of those who favor practical effects, even if in this case that means watching someone’s face forced down into the contents of a gooey head cavity.

    EDB TP 035

SlashFilm also points out that the movie knows when to have fun with the madness, writing, “Evil Dead Burn” is surprisingly funny, giving us a hefty dose of comedy beats that liven the mood and keep the movie from being an unrelenting pain fest. Vaniček doesn’t lay the humor on too thick, but it’s very clearly there, and it makes the movie all the more memorable

Terrifying? Absolutely. But also wickedly entertaining.

Catch Evil Dead Burn Now in Philippine Cinemas

With rave reviews, a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, and no shortage of blood-drenched Deadite chaos, “Evil Dead Burn” is shaping up to be a must-watch for horror fans who like their scares loud, gruesome, and gloriously intense.

“Evil Dead Burn” is now showing in Philippine cinemas, rated R-18 with no cuts. Distributed locally by Columbia Pictures PH.

Rising Star Kaloy Estrella Gets Spot in FDCP Master Series Acting Workshop

The Film Development Council of the Philippines continues its mission to nurture the next generation of Filipino screen actors, and its latest workshop includes Kaloy Estrella, an alumnus of the Far Eastern University Department of Communication.

    3 3

Earning a spot in the highly competitive The Master Series: FDCP Acting Workshop for Filipino Talents 2026, facilitated by veteran directors Jose Javier Reyes, Laurice Guillen, and Joel Lamangan, is no small feat. Looking at Estrella’s acting resume, it’s clear he did not just stumble into the room, but he got it through his sheer grit and undeniable versatility.

“One thing I’ve always heard in theater is, ‘Be in the moment.’ Right now, I honestly don’t know what I’m feeling. Everything still feels surreal. But this is the first time I’ve really felt that just showing up can create something truly magical,” Estrella revealed.

Kaloy Estrella in Burger King commercial

Before making waves in front of the camera, Estrella sharpened his tools onstage, proving his mettle in both classical straight plays and contemporary musicals. He took on the roles of Basilio, Estudyante, and Binatang Ibarra in Gantimpala Theater Productions’ and Artist Playground’s staging of “Noli Me Tangere: Kaming mga Nangalagas sa Dilim ng Gabi.” He also portrayed ‘Batang Florante’ in “Florante at Laura.”

Estrella has also been a mainstay in musical ensembles, including Artist Playground’s “Mga Awit ng Ibong Adarna” and Tanghalang Una Obra’s “Jeproks: The Musical” and “Dear OWWA.” Never one to shy away from raw narrative, he starred as Esteban in the FEU theater production “Mali ba ang Mangarap sa Mundong Puno ng Takot? Mali!”

    2 4

In addition, Estrella has become one of the leading choices for student and independent filmmakers across the country. He starred as Rimo in John Alex Estrella’s Sine Kabataan entry “Pantog,” and took the lead in Patrick Pangan’s “Bagito” under the Mowelfund Film Institute.

Just this year, he headlined “Pabalik-balik” for the University of the Philippines Film Institute and “Eskinita” for National University Laguna. This follows years of leading roles in short films for FEU Manila, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Asia Pacific College, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna, and UST Angelicum College, among others.

    1 5

His rich background even caught the attention of mainstream television, landing him the role of Minyong in GMA Entertainment Group’s historical drama series “Pulang Araw.”

Good actors can pivot between high art and commercial appeal, and Estrella has done exactly that. This year alone, he has turned into a commercial model for brands such as Burger King, Efficascent Oil, and Arthaland, just to name a few.

Kaloy Estrella on the floor in Dear OWWA

He has also lent his screen presence to the music scene, starring in Benj Pangilinan’s “Love, That’s Rare” (Sony Music Philippines) and CHRSTN’s “Paksa” (O/C Records).

With a background that bridges the discipline of the stage, the intimacy of indie film, and the charisma of mainstream media, Estrella is already a remarkable talent. His acceptance into the FDCP acting workshop is not just a personal milestone, but also a reminder to keep our eyes on the screen because Estrella is just getting started.

  • Director Destin Daniel Cretton and Kevin Feige Spotlight the Power of Community in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”

Director Destin Daniel Cretton and Kevin Feige Spotlight the Power of Community in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Peter Parker is living in a world that no longer remembers him.

After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter made the ultimate sacrifice to save the world. To protect everyone, he had to erase himself from the memories of the people he loves most, including MJ, played by Zendaya, and his best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. Now, in Brand New Day, Peter is left to face the aftermath alone.

    Watch the trailer here:

A More Mature Peter Parker Faces a Lonely New Reality

Peter’s journey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins in isolation. For the first time, he has no support system to lean on, no friends who remember him, and no familiar circle to remind him who he is beneath the mask.

It is this deeply emotional idea of community and belonging that resonated with director Destin Daniel Cretton.

“It’s the first time that Peter is operating alone,” says the filmmaker. “Peter has always had a wonderful community around him, but now, because of the world-changing events at the end of No Way Home, he must do everything by himself. It’s quite emotional but it’s also a lot of fun. It’s a more mature Peter Parker, but in other ways it’s the same Peter that everybody knows and loves.”

For Cretton, Peter’s struggle is not only about heroism. It is also about learning that purpose, passion, and responsibility must be balanced with connection.

He adds that finding the balance between work, no matter how passionate one may be about it, and personal connection “is the most important thing to try to find in life. Who you really are is defined by the people who love you and the people you love.”

Destin Daniel Cretton Brings Heart to a Bold New Chapter

Cretton takes the helm from Jon Watts, who directed the previous Spider-Man trilogy and helped lay the foundation for this new era of the beloved Marvel hero. Watts captured Peter Parker’s awkwardness, optimism, and humanity while weaving his story into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day, however, Peter’s world has changed. So has the creative vision behind the camera.

Known for grounding spectacle in emotion and character-driven storytelling, Cretton brings a bold and heartfelt approach to the Spider-Man mythos. His vision explores a more grounded and mature hero while keeping the focus on the person behind the mask.

Producer Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and one of the principal architects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, describes Cretton as “an artist who is also a fan.”

“Destin has created some of the best fight sequences in any Marvel movie. At the same time, he’s incredibly character-oriented and has brought Spider-Man into a new direction.”

    6 2

Kevin Feige on Responsibility, Isolation, and Self-Care

For Feige, Cretton’s vision gives Peter Parker’s famous credo a powerful new meaning.

“Destin conveys the dangers of isolation,” he notes. “Peter Parker, who’s lived by the credo, ‘With great power comes great responsibility,’ initially believes that this responsibility is only to others, when, in fact, there must be an element of it that encompasses being responsible for yourself, so that you can be your best for others.”

It is a moving evolution for a hero who has always carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Peter must learn that being a hero does not mean carrying everything alone.

Amy Pascal Praises Cretton’s Blend of Action and Emotion

Producer Amy Pascal, who has helped shape the evolving Spider-Man saga across multiple films, also praises Cretton’s ability to combine spectacle with sincerity. Having admired his work on Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Short Term 12, Pascal highlights the director’s emotional clarity.

“Destin can combine action and heart and isn’t afraid of earnest emotion,” she points out. “With Brand New Day, he has made a film about Peter thinking that the past is buried and that he can move on from his previous life. But he cannot, even though he’s living in complete denial when we meet him in this story. Brand New Day is about Peter growing up.”

  • Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” Journeys Across Six Countries, Opens in Cinemas July 15

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” Journeys Across Six Countries, Opens in Cinemas July 15

A story that has echoed across millennia is making its way to the biggest screen possible.

Christopher Nolan brings one of literature’s most legendary tales to cinemas with The Odyssey, a sweeping adaptation of the Greek epic shot across six countries: Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the United States. Opening in Philippine cinemas on July 15, the film gathers an extraordinary ensemble cast led by Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, and more.

As Nolan’s thirteenth feature film, The Odyssey marks what may be his most expansive cinematic undertaking yet.

“Your experience as a filmmaker informs the choices you make in a number of different ways, including what you feel prepared for, what you feel that you have the skill set for, and what will give you a new challenge but builds on what you’ve done before,” Nolan says. “The Odyssey is an incredible work that’s extremely important to the history of the world and development of culture, but it has never been adapted as a modern blockbuster. I was energized by the challenge of creating the mythic world of Ancient Greece and excited about telling its story, with all its rich themes, in a way I’d never seen.”

Watch the final trailer for The Odyssey here:

A Timeless Epic Reimagined for Modern Cinema

Believed to have originated around the 8th century BCE, The Odyssey is one of the most influential works in world literature. Passed down through generations of oral storytellers, the epic evolved through time while keeping its emotional core intact: a family separated by war, a kingdom in turmoil, and a hero fighting his way home.

At the heart of the story are two central figures. There is Odysseus of Ithaca, the king known for his cunning and for helping win the Trojan War through the legendary Trojan Horse. Then there is Telemachus, his son, who was only an infant when Odysseus left for Troy and has grown up wondering if his father is still alive.

Meanwhile, Penelope, Odysseus’ wife and Telemachus’ mother, must navigate the dangerous politics of Ithaca as suitors pressure her to remarry and place one of them on the throne.

It is a story of longing, survival, loyalty, and fate. Across oceans, palaces, battlefields, and mythic encounters, The Odyssey remains a powerful tale of what it means to find one’s way back home.

Christopher Nolan on the Epic’s Cinematic Power

For Nolan, adapting The Odyssey also meant recognizing just how deeply the epic has shaped storytelling on screen.

“Whether it’s the narrative through-line of Odysseus or the singular episodes that make the entirety of the epic, The Odyssey underpins almost all of cinema,” Nolan says. “It’s certainly there in every movie I’ve ever made, to a degree I never before realized. It was a fun thing to discover as I got into the work of adaptation.”

That realization helped fuel Nolan’s approach to the film, one that embraces the grand scale of ancient myth while delivering the immersive force of a modern blockbuster.

Practical Spectacle Meets Modern Visual Effects

Known for his love of practical filmmaking, real locations, and massive in-camera moments, Nolan brings that passion to The Odyssey in full force. The film combines live stunt work, practical effects, and sweeping real-world locations with modern visual effects to create a mythic world that feels both tangible and breathtaking.

“I’m a big fan of film history, particularly the silent era,” Nolan says. “Some of the attractions of cinema to audiences back then were things that also speak to audiences now. Extraordinary sets, extraordinary locations, a cast of thousands. Part of the appeal of those spectacles was that these effects were generated practically, with real sets, locations and scores of extras.”

Nolan adds that while visual effects have transformed what cinema can do, part of the wonder of older films came from seeing something real unfold before the camera.

“What has long interested me is the ability to combine those two things to create the most immersive and powerful experience possible. We can return to an older era of filmmaking, where ‘in-camera’ spectacle was everything for audiences. But we can also address the fantasy through the power of visual effects. For me, this synthesis was an appeal of the project. We are trying to do it all. Which seems totally appropriate for what the Odyssey is and needs to be on screen.”

A Hard Job Worthy of a Legendary Tale

Bringing one of the most important literary works of all time to life was never going to be simple. For Nolan, that challenge was part of the appeal.

“It was a hard job—as it should be. It’s The Odyssey.”

Epic in scale and timeless in emotion, The Odyssey begins its journey in Philippine cinemas on July 15.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Lacking in Active Conflict, ‘First Light’ Is a Reflective Movie About a Crisis of Faith

MOVIE REVIEW: Lacking in Active Conflict, ‘First Light’ Is a Reflective Movie About a Crisis of Faith

Beautifully shot, director James J. Robinson’s debut feature film, First Light, is a slow-paced, meditative examination of corruption within idealized institutions. Collaborating with cinematographer Amy Dellar, Robinson presents a world that feels lost in time and space. The narrative unfolds in an unnamed village in the Philippines, near a decaying convent built during the Spanish occupation, a world seemingly unbothered by the modern intrusion of mobile phones or television. Its atmospheric opening, featuring the convent covered in darkness as nuns glide past with candles, initially made me believe that the film might be a period piece. It is toward the end of the first act, when a motorcycle appears on screen, that we realize we are actually grounded in the modern world.

First Light follows Sister Yolanda, played by Ruby Ruiz, whose faith is profoundly shaken following a tragic accident that results in the death of a young man. Driven by her moral compass to find some semblance of peace for the young man’s surviving family, she begins to unearth the complex power dynamics at play between a wealthy local clan, the government, and the church and how it ties to the suppression of the truth regarding the boy’s passing. Consequently, Sister Yolanda’s faith falters, igniting a journey to discovery begins.

First Light adopts a languid pace, slowly unfolding its world piece by piece with no rush or urgency. The film follows the daily life of Sister Yolanda, illustrating the extraordinary lengths she goes to for the parish, the people in it, her fellow sisters of the habit, and the church she so deeply believes in. Yet, while Dellar’s cinematography remains exquisite, the narrative pacing never truly picks up, even after the tragic death of the young man and her growing realisation about the world around her. This relentless slow-burn makes the film lack the energy it needs to fully delve into the raw emotion of Sister Yolanda’s own crisis of faith.

This slowness also takes the form through the line delivery, where characters take prolonged pauses between lines that has a tendency to kill the organic energy of a scene. This rhythmic hesitation makes the conversations sound noticeably scripted rather than natural, as if the actors are visibly waiting for a cue or a calculated emotional beat. Ultimately, a more naturalistic, free-flowing delivery of the dialogue would have greatly helped the film achieve the grounded mood.

At a certain point, things become a bit too easy; major discoveries are made with very little fanfare. Sister Yolanda’s own dealings, whether with the priest (Soliman Cruz), a fellow sister contemplating leaving the convent (Kare Adea), or Linda (Maricel Soriano), a wealthy matron whose mother is on life support and who Sister Yolanda visits to pray over, usually ends with a discussion but no real argument or debate. While the film constantly searches for an active conflict, it settles instead for a passive one: one of reflection.

    First Light

Thankfully, Ruiz is exceptional at conveying these abstract thoughts and complex emotions within such a dormant narrative. There’s a lot of nuanced work here that fills in the storytelling gaps, and manages to create a version of Sister Yolanda that is remains consistently fascinating to watch. It’s in the lens of the  mundane and the ordinary that we are watching all this unfold and Ruby Ruiz harnesses that effectively.

Ultimately, there are many interesting things that First Light does and tries to tackle. It juxtaposes images of our Spanish colonial history as an opposing, oppressive force over its less fortunate characters, creating links to the corruption upon many hallowed institutions, most especially the church. These are the interrogations I admire but I ultimately wish the film had approached this with a little bit more narrative energy.

    My Rating: 2.5 Stars

    stars 2 5

Keep an eye out for First Light on the film festival circuit or look out for its upcoming digital and streaming release. It is a slow-burn narrative worth tracking down just to witness Ruby Ruiz’s powerhouse, quietly powerful performance!
