Explore the visual masterpiece of the live-action 'Yu Yu Hakusho' series, where groundbreaking VFX and high-tech CGI bring manga characters to life. Witness the innovation in the latest trailer before its Netflix debut.

The countdown to the much-anticipated release of ‘Yu Yu Hakusho‘ is accompanied by an exhilarating trailer, showcasing the series’ state-of-the-art visual effects. This live-action adaptation promises to set new benchmarks in the genre, seamlessly blending the realms of humans and demons.

The Essence of Manga in Motion

Spanning five episodes, this series pays homage to the beloved manga by encapsulating its supernatural allure in a strikingly realistic manner. This feat is achieved through a collaboration with the esteemed Scanline VFX, renowned for their expertise in big-budget Hollywood ventures.

Behind the Scenes with Visual Effects

Tomofumi Akahane, the visual effects director, reveals the challenges of showcasing CGI characters in close-up shots. He credits Scanline VFX for elevating the series to unprecedented heights, blurring the lines between CGI and reality for viewers. “To what extent CGI-characters can be shown close-up depends on the distance from the camera, whether there’s dialogue, and the facial expression,” said Tomofumi Akahane. “With Scanline VFX on board, we were able to reach higher than any other Japanese title and achieve a quality where the average viewer won’t be able to tell that CGI is actually CGI.”

Innovative Filming Techniques

A groundbreaking filming technique was employed, involving 170 cameras capturing actors in a 360-degree format. This allowed director Sho Tsukikawa to later select the ideal angles, creating CG characters that flawlessly integrate with live-action sequences.

Reimagining Iconic Battles

Recreating the series’ iconic battles posed significant challenges, particularly with the Toguro Brothers. Visual effects advisor Ryo Sakaguchi discusses the intricate process of scaling the actors to match their manga counterparts, ensuring realistic interactions during combat. “The body size of the actors and the characters are different, so it was really hard to change the scale. It wasn’t just a matter of changing their height, we needed to ensure that the sight lines of the opponents were accurate,” said Ryo Sakaguchi

Actor Integration with CGI

Addressing the unfamiliarity of actors with CGI, the production team devised innovative methods to assist in performance. This included employing stunt personnel in special costumes to simulate the presence of CGI characters, enhancing the actors’ ability to portray authentic battle scenes.

Premiere and Availability

The fate of the human world will unfold in this captivating series. ‘Yu Yu Hakusho‘ is set to premiere on December 14, exclusively on Netflix, inviting audiences to experience a visual spectacle unlike any other.
