From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes Rebel Moon, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. ClickTheCity was invited to the global press conference for Disney+’s latest action-packed, super-powered Korean drama called ‘Moving.’ Based on the hit webtoon of the same name by Kangfull, the show is about teens and their parents, both of which have amazing superhuman powers and are hiding from the world. It’s a show that boasts of intense character relationships amidst secret agents, assassins, and paranormal gifts that include flight, super strength and speed, regeneration, and even electric powers.
It came out last August 9 and has been very popular since its release.
The show boasts of incredible special effects with over 60 studios involved in making all the special effects of the show’s 20 episodes. With each episode saving up some of its running time to show off some high-impact action sequences and super-powered fight scenes, ‘Moving’ is offering something completely different from your usual Kdramas; one that can rival all the superhuman shows of western television.
Prior to the show’s release, the cast and the creators met with the press to talk about their then-upcoming new series. The star-studded cast includes Ryu Seungryeong (who you might recognize in ‘Kingdom’ season 1 and 2 and the hilarious comedy ‘Extreme Job’), Han Hyo Joo (‘Happiness’ and ‘The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure’), Zo Insung (‘Escape from Mogadishu’), Kim Sungkyun (‘Reply 1988’), Chae Taehyun (‘The Producers’), Kim Hee Won (‘Misaeng: An Incomplete Life’) and young stars Lee Jungha, Go Younjung, and Kim Dohoon.
Here are some of the highlights from the press conference:
From the way the cast talked and dealt with each other, you could see there’s a lot of love in that ensemble. They were all friendly and unguarded – not afraid at all to be silly. A lot of the actors playing parents would stay in character and talk about the actors playing their children as if they were really their kids. For example, Lee Jungha was very nervous as this is his first big lead role in a drama series. He was so nervous that Han Hyo Joo, who plays his mom in the show, cheered him on and spoke so highly of him “as his mom” whereas Zo Insung, who plays his father, apologised for his nervousness, and wished he “raised him better.”
From the press conference, we discovered that webtoon writer and creator of ‘Moving’ wrote the show and was part of the casting process. Kim Sungkyun was cast as Lee Jaeman because he looked just like the character in the webtoon. Chae Taehyun’s character, Jeon Gye-do, on the other hand, is a character that doesn’t appear in the web toon. Kangfull wrote him into the show to help expand the world.
They showed clips from the behind-the-scenes of the show and you can see the amount of work that was spent on the fight choreography, the wire-works (for the flying scenes and moments of super-strength), and the other practical effects.
Kim Hee Won is just as funny as his persona in the variety show ‘House on Wheels.’ He jokes about being the only character in the show without superpowers and how, as a teacher, everyone learned from him.
There’s a lot of love and respect that was given to Han Hyo Joo with Zo Insung even saying that Han Hyo Joo should also be recognized globally as an actress because the Korean entertainment industry is too small for her talent. Everyone in the cast agreed.
Prior to the Q&A, all the actors were shot individually by the photographers and they were asked to do superhero poses and you could see who were very game to do so and who weren’t.
The press conference shed light on the series’ unique approach to superhuman abilities, its stellar cast chemistry, and the meticulous craftsmanship behind its action-packed sequences. As ‘Moving’ continues to captivate audiences, get ready for a genre-bending journey that embraces the extraordinary in the realm of Kdramas.

L-r, DONNIE, MIKEY, LEO and RAPH in PARAMOUNT PICTURES and NICKELODEON MOVIES Present
A POINT GREY Production “TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM”
1. A Teenage Connection to Turtle Power
Seth Rogen, the creative force behind “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” shares a deep-rooted connection to the heroes in a half shell that stretches back to his early years. Born in 1982, Rogen was in the prime audience when the animated series made its debut in 1987. Enthralled by the four wisecracking siblings, Rogen’s fascination with the Turtles went beyond the screen. He fondly remembers, “It was perfectly geared toward someone my age and I loved it. They were funny. They were referential. I started taking karate probably because of the Turtles. I was just kind of obsessed.”
His admiration for Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello—four turtle siblings transformed into wisecracking mutants after an encounter with a mysterious neon ‘ooze’—led him to even take up karate. However, Rogen was not alone in this fandom. The TMNT universe, recounting the escapades of these four turtle siblings, has been a cultural powerhouse, enthralling generations for decades. Their story has fueled a long-standing comic book series, popular cartoon shows, an expansive toy line, multiple video games, and an impressive six theatrical releases that, combined, raked in over $1.7 billion at the global box office.
With such a rich legacy, few fans could dream of adding to this storied franchise. Yet, when Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Paramount and Nickelodeon, approached Rogen about crafting the next chapter in the TMNT saga, Rogen had a clear vision. He wanted to delve deeper into the “teenage” aspect of the turtles, an angle he felt had remained largely untouched. This innovative perspective birthed “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” which promises to encapsulate the rebellious spirit and energy that sparked the turtles’ creation four decades ago.
2. From Living Room Doodles to Cultural Icons: The Unexpected Rise of TMNT
The whimsical origin of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is truly one for the books. What began as a late-night sketch in 1983 between comic authors Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird to make each other chuckle, transformed into a global sensation. Inspired by Bruce Lee, Eastman’s initial doodle of a turtle armed with nunchucks soon expanded to include four distinct turtles, each bearing weapons and personalities mirroring Eastman’s high school friends. Their names? Art history enthusiast Eastman’s penchant for Renaissance art influenced the naming, leading to Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and after some deliberation, Donatello, while Donatello narrowly beat out Bernini. Although the creators initially thought the Turtles might be a fleeting comic idea, their 1984 self-funded debut issue sold out, prompting a second edition. This was only the beginning. The comics skyrocketed in popularity, leading to an animated series in 1987, cementing the Turtles as cultural icons. This playful drawing from two friends’ living room evolved into a legacy that inspired countless fans, some inspired future filmmakers to reimagine and evolve the TMNT legacy.
3. The Perfect Team for a Teenage Twist on TMNT
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, renowned for their captivating teen-focused narratives under Point Grey Pictures, were an unexpected pick for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ rebirth. Their intrinsic link with the high school and teenage genre, as highlighted by hits like “Superbad,” prepared them to envision the Turtles as true teens. Their intention was clear: to depict the Turtles not as adult performers but as genuine teenagers navigating the complex world of adolescence.
Rogen and Goldberg knew they needed a director whose storytelling was embedded with heart, humor, and a touch of rebellion. Enter Jeff Rowe, the co-director of “The Mitchells Vs. The Machines,” a film celebrated for its quirky creativity and emotional depth. Despite Rowe’s initial belief that he hadn’t made the best impression, his passionate dedication to the Turtles’ lore and his innovative pitch – to produce a movie about teenagers that looked as if it was created by them – sealed the deal. This collaborative vision encapsulated a coming-of-age story where the Turtles, while grappling with their own familial dynamics, yearn for acceptance and the quintessential teenage experience.
4. Drawing Outside the Lines: A Creative Visual Approach
In the realm of animation, where polished perfection often reigns supreme, the vision behind “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” defies animation norms by embracing the imperfections of teenage doodles. Director Jeff Rowe’s audacious idea sought to mirror the messy, fun, and unpredictable nature of teenage drawings, departing from the polished look of conventional animated films. Animators were challenged to discard their established techniques and create visuals that mirrored the uninhibited spirit of high school sketches. This approach, though paradoxical, demanded imperfection and asymmetry, resulting in an animation style that breaks away from uniformity and champions the youthful energy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The film’s distinctive appearance was meticulously crafted through a combination of innovative techniques. Character surfacing supervisor Anne-Claire Leroux led a team in creating deliberately imperfect textures and details, offering a refreshing departure from the typical pursuit of perfection in CGI animation. Inspired by original toy line box art, the collaborative efforts of Rowe and production designer Yashar Kassai breathed individuality into the turtle characters. This deliberate embrace of chaos yielded an animated adventure that not only challenges artistic conventions but also captures the essence of the turtles’ spirit in a refreshingly unique manner.
5. Casting the Perfect Turtles
Filmmakers Rogen, Goldberg, Weaver, and Rowe underwent an exhaustive search for the ideal young actors to embody the four iconic turtles. Their final choices — Nicolas Cantu (Leonardo), Shamon Brown Jr. (Michelangelo), Brady Noon (Raphael), and Micah Abbey (Donatello) — brought a unique blend of youthfulness and comedic talent. One standout audition was Cantu’s, who, instead of following the traditional self-tape guidelines, improvised and showcased his energy in a mini film from his room, leading the filmmakers to cast him as Leonardo, a role he feels he was destined for. Cantu, already known for his roles in “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” and Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” takes on the role of Leonardo, infusing the character with determination and individuality. Brown Jr., embodying Michelangelo’s carefree spirit, brings endless energy and charm to the group. Noon, familiar from his appearance in “Good Boys,” captures Raphael’s rebellious nature with his strong improvisational skills. Abbey, a versatile talent considered for “Good Boys,” takes on the role of Donatello, portraying his tech-savvy, introverted personality.
The decision to cast teenage actors not only aligns with the film’s teenage-focused theme but also underscores the creative freedom and authenticity that infuse the production. By selecting young talents who embody both the comedic and emotional nuances of their characters, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” promises an animated adventure that resonates with fans old and new. The spirited collaboration of these talented actors, along with innovative recording methods, injects the film with an infectious camaraderie that mirrors the fun-loving energy of the turtles themselves.
6. Family Bonds and Iconic Voices: The Heart of TMNT
Within the vibrant universe of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, two figures stand as pillars of support and camaraderie for the titular characters: their adoptive father Splinter and their close friend April O’Neil.
Jackie Chan as Splinter – A Dream Come True For the filmmakers of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”, finding the perfect voice for Splinter, the wise and martial arts-skilled rat who is a father figure to the Turtles, was no small task. Their dream pick? Legendary martial artist and actor Jackie Chan. Channeling his unparalleled comedic timing, honed through decades of action-comedy films, Chan embodied the gravitas and martial prowess of Splinter. Interestingly, while the filmmakers idolized Chan and saw him as the ultimate choice, they were unsure he would accept the role. To their delight, Jackie Chan accepted the role and showcased immense humility and dedication during recording sessions. His inclusion in the cast bridges the gap between classic martial arts cinema and modern animated comedy, providing both gravitas and humor to the beloved character of Splinter. For fans of both the actor and the franchise, this casting choice was a match made in heaven.
A New Spin on April O’Neil For the character of April O’Neil, traditionally portrayed as an adult reporter in previous iterations, the filmmakers took a fresh approach. In “Mutant Mayhem”, April is reimagined as a teenager, still harboring dreams of becoming a reporter. Voiced by the talented Ayo Edebiri, known for her role in “The Bear”, this version of April is depicted as a brave, intelligent young woman striving for acceptance, much like the Turtles themselves. The bond between April and the Turtles in this rendition is not just based on shared adventures but a mutual feeling of being misfits seeking their place in the world. This fresh take on a beloved character introduces April to a new generation of fans, making her relatable to younger audiences and deepening her connection with the titular heroes.
7. A Riot of Mutant Mayhem
True to its subtitle, “Mutant Mayhem,” this film showcases an array of bizarre and menacing mutants. The ooze that transformed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into heroes has spawned a multitude of mutants throughout the city, and the film is on a mission to bring in as many of these unique creatures as possible. Incorporating the franchise’s rich history of mutants, the film introduces Superfly, a newly mutated antagonist who is determined to eliminate humanity. Drawing inspiration from Baxter Stockman, a character from the original comics, Superfly showcases an evolved storyline. To voice this formidable foe, the filmmakers enlisted Ice Cube, a fan of the Turtles since his son’s childhood. Ice Cube’s debut as an animated character was nothing short of impressive, as he brought his trademark humor and talent to the recording booth.
The mutant cast extends beyond Superfly, with a lineup of iconic villains portrayed by an ensemble of exceptional comic actors. The formidable roster includes Leatherhead (voiced by Rose Byrne), Ray Fillet (voiced by Post Malone), Mondo Gecko (voiced by Paul Rudd), Wingnut (voiced by Natasia Demetriou), Genghis Frog (voiced by Hannibal Buress), and the notorious Bebop and Rocksteady. Seth Rogen embraced the role of Bebop, relishing the contrast to his previous character, Pumbaa in The Lion King. John Cena joined as Rocksteady, forming a dynamic duo that embodies the essence of New York. The film’s humor extends even to its musical mutants, with an unexpected twist involving Post Malone. His portrayal of Ray Fillet, a humanoid manta ray, injects the character with a catchy and amusing quirk. Post Malone’s musical background infuses the film with an infectious energy, leaving audiences grinning from ear to ear.
In “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” the screen is crowded with mutants of all shapes and sizes, proving that when it comes to mutant mayhem, the more, the merrier.
8. A Passion Project Rooted in Childhood Nostalgia
The heart of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” beats with an unparalleled love for the iconic franchise, stemming from the personal childhood connections of its creators. It’s a testament to the deep-seated love that the filmmakers have for the Turtles franchise. Every step of its creation was fueled by a shared passion among the team who grew up as devoted Turtles fans themselves. The result is a film made not only for the next generation of fans but also as a heartfelt tribute to their own cherished childhood memories.
The film’s crew, from artists to directors, carried their affection for the Turtles into their work. Many of the artists shared childhood photos of themselves sporting Turtles merchandise as part of their pitch to work on the project. For them, this endeavor was nothing short of a dream come true, a chance to contribute to a franchise that had profoundly shaped their youth. Director Jeff Rowe fondly recalls how the Turtles had influenced his early years, igniting his imagination and shaping his sense of humor.
However, no one embodies the love for the Turtles more than co-creator Kevin Eastman. With an intimate understanding of the franchise’s evolution and an enduring connection with the fan community, Eastman acknowledges the profound impact these characters have had across languages and cultures. Approvingly, he emphasizes that “Mutant Mayhem” truly captures the essence of the Turtles, celebrating their enduring appeal in a loud and proud cinematic spectacle. The film stands as a labor of love, a collaborative effort to honor the Turtles’ legacy while inviting a new generation of fans to join in the excitement.

An impromptu encounter with a scriptwriter unveiled a heartening story unfamiliar to Archie. Portraying Jann Mardenborough, the genuine gamer whose dreams accelerated from virtual racing tracks to real racecar circuits, became a prospect too compelling for him to ignore. “I met with one of the writers almost a year earlier [before he was cast]. He told me a story I had never heard before, and I was taken aback when I was sent the material – a couple of podcasts, interviews, YouTube videos,” shares Madekwe, who plays Jann Mardenborough, the real gamer-turned-professional racecar driver whose story the film is about. “I was really moved, because one thing that appeals to me as an actor is finding unknown, inspiring stories about people who look like me. When I was growing up, these stories – a young person achieving their dreams – were never told about a person whose face looked like mine. So I was unbelievably compelled to tell this story.”
And the real-life inspiration, Jann Mardenborough, resonates with this sentiment, wishing to inspire countless other youngsters who mirror his journey. Watch the adrenaline-packed trailer:
The real Jann Mardenborough agrees. “I hope it shows kids that look like me that they can trust themselves and can go after what they love,” he says.
Behind the Wheel: Archie’s Racing Hurdles
Interestingly, Archie’s maiden challenge wasn’t learning to drive a real car, but mastering the gaming maneuvers of “Gran Turismo”. The filming sessions in the gaming café weren’t just acting – they were genuine gaming tournaments against formidable AI competitors.
Like the character he plays, Madekwe had one hiccup when he began racing cars: he didn’t know how to drive. While working on another production, before Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story began shooting, he would shoot his scenes during the day, then sneak in a driving lesson in his evenings.
But learning to drive wasn’t his greatest challenge; he picked it up fairly easily. That was nothing compared to learning to fake drive: to be able to compete for real in the game “Gran Turismo.” “I had to actually be good at the game,” he says. “To shoot the scenes in the gaming café, we were playing the game for real against the difficult AI, and I had to win. That was daunting, because I’m aware of how much practice and skill goes into being good at games like that.”
To get good at the game, Madekwe was trained by David Perel, who – like Mardenborough – was a sim driver who now races for Ferrari. “PlayStation sent a simulator to my house – a seat, steering wheel, and pedals,” Madekwe recalls. “And as I wrapped the film I was on before, I just had to practice, practice, practice. It takes so much skill to learn the tracks, the racing lines, the corners, and feeling the brakes. And as soon as you get the hang of that, it’s just repetition, repetition. It gave me so much admiration and respect for those drivers, because for them to do that under the circumstances that they have to is insanity.”
Could Archie Be the Next Racing Sensation?
Despite his rigorous training, don’t expect Archie at the racing forefront anytime soon. “With nothing but respect for every racecar driver on this planet… no,” he says. “I hate being in the car. It’s hot, it’s claustrophobic, it’s nauseating, it’s anxiety-inducing. I’m 6’5” – I can barely fit in the cars. And on top of that, you have to make split-second decisions in the middle of those circumstances. You can lose seven pounds of sweat during a race. It’s a total body experience, athleticism to the highest degree.”
Delve into Jann Mardenborough’s extraordinary metamorphosis from a teen engrossed in Gran Turismo to a celebrated racecar maestro. Under Neill Blomkamp’s direction, this riveting narrative boasts a starry cast including David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, and others. Catch Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story at your nearest cinema in the Philippines from August 30, 2023.

In the riveting culmination of the trilogy The Equalizer 3, the enigmatic life of Robert McCall takes center stage once again. While his mission to aid those in need has provided him a semblance of comfort, it’s clear that violence has left an indelible mark on his identity, and that can’t endure indefinitely. Denzel Washington, reprising his signature role, delves into McCall’s internal struggles, stating, “He’s grappling with his inner demons. This film distinguishes itself from the first two by delving into a more personal narrative. It’s about his redemption and the art of letting go.”
“He’s going through an internal battle,” says Antoine Fuqua, who returns to direct the third film in the trilogy and fifth overall with Washington. “He’s helping those who can’t help themselves, handing out justice his way to evil people. But he’s questioning himself. Has he gone too far? Is he enjoying it too much? Is he still doing it for the right reasons?”
Producers Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal say that the reason that The Equalizer franchise has resonated so strongly with audiences is that it echoes with who Washington is in real life – minus the violence. “Robert McCall is able to take care of good people who can’t take care of themselves,” they say. “Denzel, as a human being, really believes in mission-oriented goals… I think it’s the same thing here with Robert McCall – he uses his powers to serve good. He, as both Denzel and as Robert McCall, are going to make sure that the good people are protected. The fun of it is tracking them down – he gives them all an opportunity to stop what they’re doing, and they don’t, and so he has to become the Equalizer.”
The trouble for McCall, says Washington, is that he’s become a little too enamored by that idea – to his peril. “He has gotten addicted to this so-called ‘justice’ and crossed the line into unnecessary violence,” adds Washington. “He pays a price. And he has to deal with himself, and rely on others, and break out of his patterns, or he will die. Through that, hopefully, he finds peace.”
“What I wanted to explore was a man on the verge,” Fuqua continues. “McCall is on the verge of a question – what else does he have to live for? His wife is gone; Susan Plummer (Melissa Leo) is gone. It seems like he does the right thing, but he’s constantly punished. And so I think he’s on the verge, and he has to think about what he’s going to do with his life.”
The Equalizer 3 brings Robert McCall abroad for the first time. “The plan was always that the third film would go overseas,” says screenwriter Richard Wenk. “I had never been to Italy, but I knew that Denzel spends a lot of time there. So, during the pandemic, I did a lot of research. I thought that Italy would be the place that McCall might end up finding a place for himself.”
The Equalizer 3, also starring Dakota Fanning, opens in Philippine cinemas September 13.
**The interviews for this article were done before the writers and actors strikes.**
Following his departure from the realm of government assassination, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) grapples with reconciling his haunting past. Discovering a semblance of solace in rendering justice on behalf of the downtrodden, he finds himself unexpectedly at home in Southern Italy. However, he stumbles upon the plight of his newfound friends, ensnared by local crime syndicates. In the face of escalating danger, McCall embraces his duty: to shield his friends by taking on the mafia.
Helmed by director Antoine Fuqua and penned by Richard Wenk, inspired by the TV series by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim.
The film boasts a cast led by Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, David Denman, and Gaia Scodellaro.
Arriving in cinemas on September 13, The Equalizer 3 receives its Philippine distribution through Columbia Pictures, a local arm of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Join the conversation with #TheEqualizer3.

This film is not just a story of royalty but a poignant exploration of identity, age, and legacy. A must-watch for those who value personal journeys set against grand backdrops.
In “Devils,” the lines between the hunter and the hunted blur treacherously. Homicide detective Jae-hwan is driven by a burning vendetta: avenging his colleague and brother-in-law, who fell victim to a serial murderer. But when Jae-hwan finally corners the elusive killer, Jin-hyeok, a startling accident throws them into chaos. Waking up in the hospital, Jae-hwan is faced with a horrifying truth – he now inhabits the body of the very murderer he sought to bring down. Trapped in a twisted fate, he embarks on a relentless quest not only to reclaim his identity but also to safeguard his family. “Devils” unravels a chilling tale of revenge, identity, and the relentless pursuit of justice, even when faced with impossible odds.
In a world where justice and vengeance often blur lines, “Retribution” is a gripping tale of a man seeking revenge for his family. Intense, dark, and emotionally charged, this film is bound to resonate with those who love gritty dramas.
In “Return to Seoul,” Davy Chou crafts a poignant tale of self-discovery set against the vibrant backdrop of South Korea. The narrative unfolds through the eyes of a 25-year-old French woman, journeying back to her birthplace after being adopted by a French family. As she embarks on the deeply personal quest to find her biological parents, unexpected twists await. Garnering international praise, Chou’s cinematic masterpiece has been celebrated at esteemed film festivals, from the Asia Pacific Screen Awards to the Athens International Film Festival. Its resonant themes and compelling storytelling also earned it the coveted Jury Prize at the 10th QCinema International Film Festival. “Return to Seoul” isn’t just a geographical voyage; it’s a heartrending exploration of identity, heritage, and the ties that bind.
Love, longing, and a hint of nostalgia encapsulate the essence of “Wish You Were the One.” This romantic drama delves into the depths of heartbreak, second chances, and the timeless quest for true love.
