  • ARTablado Presents Olondrizism

The paintings on display at the ongoing exhibit at ARTablado in Robinsons Galleria are by an artist with a strong faith in a higher power. In fact, when asked who her favorite artist is, Marie Claire Olondriz chose God. “He’s the ultimate artist who created everything… matter, space, time, the entire universe.”

PR ARTablado Presents Olondrizism Amor Y Cuidado

In the years that she has spent honing her painting style, she has come up with canvases awash in color and light. Some of them are of Marian images like Our Lady of Aranzazu and Our Lady Star of the Sea but there are also her floral paintings including a beautiful one of a magnolia flower in full bloom. Another theme is the Madonna and Child although the artist opts to leave their faces blank, inscrutable.

Unlike other painters who utilize both portrait and landscape, Marie Claire’s canvases are all vertical—even one that features a tiny cottage at the bottom of the frame, bluish mountains in the distance.

    PR ARTablado Presents Olondrizism Desplegar

“I’ve been passionate about art since I was a child. I believe that art is in everything not just in drawing, but in how we do things every day. It’s how we dress, show love, talk, smile, and our dreams. It’s there in what we believe in and how we write. Even in small stuff like arranging things, cooking, and the words we use. Art is all around us,” Marie Claire said.

When she was younger, she would grab a sketch pad and her pencils and draw whatever caught her eye—sketching and coloring based on how she felt.

    PR ARTablado Presents Olondrizism Floracion

It taught her to be unafraid of color, of adhering too closely to what colors can be used for certain objects. “Sometimes, if someone asked me to draw something, I’d do it their way,” she said.

Marie Claire came up with her style of painting when she was confined in the hospital. She started out scribbling in her sketch pad which led to continuous circles that initially seemed directionless.

PR ARTablado Presents Olondrizism Nuestra Senora de Aranzazu

“Later, I expanded this to my paintings, using contrasting colors against the backdrop to create a textured look. What I enjoy is the sense of playfulness these scribbles bring to my art,” she said. “Amidst the sea of realist styles in my art group, mine feels unique. That’s why I began calling it ‘olondrizism,’ after my own name. It reflects my heart and soul when doing art.”

When the time came to pick a title for her ARTablado exhibit, she chose “Obra ni Maria Clara.”

Coming up with new paintings for the exhibit, however, took a while as she struggled with tennis elbow as well as carpal tunnel syndrome, the latter afflicting both hands.

    PR ARTablado Presents Olondrizism Positividad

“On top of that, fibromyalgia would give me pain every single day,” she recounted.

She took a break for a while and entertained thoughts she might not be able to meet the deadline. “Instead of having an operation, I tried therapy and kept trusting in God, believing He’d bless this exhibit somehow. I couldn’t let the doctors operate on my hands [because] that would mean no painting for over a month, or maybe even no more painting at all. But I held onto my faith, and after going through therapy and taking some rest, I managed to finish all the paintings I needed for the upcoming exhibit. It’s all thanks to God.”

The exhibit that runs until September 15 will highlight Marie Claire’s take on “the beauty of everyday life, of common things we seldom appreciate.”

The artist is grateful to Roseann Villegas, Corporate Public Relations Director of Robinsons Land Corporation for approaching her after spotting a painting Marie Claire had made for a group show. “It was like a dream come true. I felt overwhelmed. I thanked God because I knew deep down that this was a gift from Him.”

Established in 2020, Robinsons Land ARTablado, a portmanteau of “art” and “entablado” is Robinsons Land’s very own stage in showcasing the Filipino ingenuity and creativity. This platform allows emerging and established artists to freely express themselves through art and paves the way to greater recognition of their talent and hard work. To date, ARTablado has mounted numerous exhibitions and hosted over 400 artists.

  • Director Michael Chaves invites fans to “The Nun II” as it gears up for midnight screenings September 6

New Line Cinema brings you the horror thriller “The Nun II,” the next chapter in the story of “The Nun,” the highest grossing entry in the juggernaut $2 billion “The Conjuring” Universe.  As a treat to fans of scary movies, “The Nun II” will hold simultaneous midnight screenings in participating cinemas on September 6 (also the film’s opening day). Fans can get their tickets now at https://www.nun2.com.ph/

“I’m really excited for audiences to see this movie, and I think that it is nightmarishly scary,” says Michael Chaves in an interview provided by the studio. “I love the theater-going experience, especially with horror movies. Being in a packed theater with friends and strangers is such an incredible and powerful experience. Along with the scares, it is filled with truly unique set pieces and a compelling story that takes characters whom we love further on their journey and into really hard places while making tough choices. The times that I’ve seen it with an audience have been really special and exciting, and I can’t wait for moviegoers to see this film.”

    TN2 02

On his fascination with Valak, Chaves shares, “I think that the Demon Nun is one of those iconic movie monsters. I mean, you see it on a poster and it’s like a little bit of a throwback to Dracula. You see a little bit of Pennywise. You see a little Nosferatu. It’s so timeless and has such an iconic look. It’s one of the ultimate horror movie icons and one of the ultimate movie villains. With this film, I just wanted to take it further. I wanted to explore the manifestations. And I also just wanted to dig more into the story, or at least the myth or the theories, of what its origins could be. I think it’s really important to do that, but to never be too specific. I think that part of the mystery and part of not knowing what it is, that’s really powerful. It’s what makes it truly scary.”

    About “The Nun II”

1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun.

Taissa Farmiga (“The Nun,” “The Gilded Age”) returns as Sister Irene, joined by Jonas Bloquet (“Tirailleurs,” “The Nun”), Storm Reid (“The Last of Us,” “The Suicide Squad”), Anna Popplewell (“Fairytale,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” trilogy) and Bonnie Aarons (reprising her role from “The Nun”), surrounded by an ensemble cast of international talent.

    TN2 03

Michael Chaves (“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It”) directs, from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing (“Eli,” “The Autopsy of Jane Doe”) and Akela Cooper (“M3GAN,” “Malignant”),with a story by Cooper, based on characters created by James Wan & Gary Dauberman.

The Safran Company’s Peter Safran and Atomic Monster’s James Wan produce, continuing their collaboration as filmmakers on all of the previous “Conjuring” films. “The Nun II” is executive produced by Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Victoria Palmeri, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Michael Polaire.

In cinemas September 6, “The Nun II” is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Discovery company.

  • Small details matter: 3 Reasons why Solane LPG’s Bioseal is a cut above the rest

When it comes to buying household items, it’s easy to say, “Don’t sweat the small stuff” and just go for the popular choice. While it’s tempting to settle for specific kitchen equipment because ‘nakasanayan na,’ or because it does what we need it to do, there’s a reason why they say quality is all in the details.

    IMG 0241

On top of examining the credibility of the manufacturer, looking at the extra features of a product can tell you a lot about its overall quality and safety. This is most importantly true for kitchen equipment, which should not only be functional but also safe for you and your household.

Solane, one of the country’s trusted LPG brands, introduced the Bioseal as part of its efforts to ensure that every component of its LPG product is reusable, recyclable, or compostable. The Bioseal might look simple, but here is how it stands out:

    • It’s eco-friendly
The plastic used in the Bioseal only takes 5 to 10 years to decompose compared to the 500 to 1000 years normal plastic takes. This innovation allows the seal to be segregated along with other biodegradable waste to be used as compost later after it decomposes. Alternatively, the new seal can be recycled together with ordinary plastic waste.
    • It ensures your LPG tanks are leak-proof
The Bioseal has a new locking mechanism, making it more effective at protecting LPG cylinders from potential leaks and being tampered with. The Bioseal doesn’t compromise on its quality — it’s as strong and has the same shelf life as Solane LPG’s old seal while being lighter and biodegradable.
    • It guarantees the authenticity of your LPG
Pioneered and introduced by Solane LPG, the Bioseal is designed to provide users with an extra layer of peace of mind. Only genuine Solane tanks have the Bioseal, which contains a QR code, a unique seal number, and laser markings to identify that the LPG tank came from a legitimate Solane LPG distributor or retailer.

    IMG 0242

Solane LPG’s Bioseal is not only a step towards protecting the environment but is also a conscious choice to prioritize your safety. The Bioseal may only be a small part, but combined with the intensive quality and safety control that comes with every Solane LPG tank, it ensures that your kitchen fuel will not end up as a threat to you, your loved ones, and your hard-earned property.

Trusted companies like Solane LPG go the extra mile to do their share in reducing their carbon footprint while ensuring that you and your family are safe through unmatched innovation and technical expertise.

Verified Solane LPG products are guaranteed to have gone through all the proper safety checks to ensure the safety of your household. All genuine Solane LPG tanks come with the new Bioseal, so make sure the tank comes with the right seal and markings to ensure that you are paying for safe and quality LPG products.

To order verified Solane LPG, customers may call the Hatid Bahay Hotline (+632 8887-5555), or send a message to 0918-887-5555 (Smart) / 0917 8977555 (Globe). Customers may also place their order through the Solane Web Ordering platform (order.solane.com.ph), the Solane Facebook page (http://m.me/solane.ph), or place their orders through the Solane LPG app, available on the App Store or Google Play.

  • REVIEW: Getting Lost with NCT 127: a review of the first episode of ‘NCT 127: The Lost Boys’

On August 30, Disney+ will release the 4-part limited series ‘NCT 127: The Lost Boys.’ It is a docu-series that will allow the 9 members of the very popular Kpop idol group NCT 127 to reflect on their success since their debut in 2016 and ruminate on how their “lost childhood.” It promises to get intimate, and personal with each member as they speak about what it was like growing up under the spotlight, surrounded by the press and the fans, and growing up as successful idols since they blasted into the music scene.

D NCT127 The Lost Boys Still Large

Each episode will focus on two or three members and in the first episode, we are introduced to the band. We get to hear the 9 members talk about themselves as a group, what NCT stands for and what it really means (the answer is just as vague but interesting to hear from their own mouths), and then it segues straight into two of the hardest working members of NCT (and maybe even Kpop), Mark Lee and Haechan.

After all, these two members are not just singing and dancing with NCT 127 but with NCT Dream as well. They are learning the songs, harmonies, choreography, and lore of two different idol groups, both of which are very successful. Recognising that and starting with them was a pretty good move on the part of the filmmakers as they would have a larger appeal since their fan base might be a lot bigger and they can start at a place of tension – how Mark and Haechan are exhausted and might be feeling lost.

The show takes a very creative and artistic way of visualizing the narrations of the members. Instead of just simple talking heads or a basic interview style, ‘NCT 127: The Lost Boys’ uses an almost theatrical approach to this autobiographical documentary. In the show, they call it “performance art.” For Mark, he recreates his childhood with actors playing his younger self, his teenage self, while Mark plays his present day self. Other members can play other characters in Mark’s narration of his thoughts and memories.

For Haechan, they take the approach of therapists couch, or even a hypnotist allowing Haechan to question his own choices and to reflect upon the conditions of his youth that brought him to where he is now as a member of NCT 127.

As someone not familiar with NCT 127 (I am familiar with NCT Dream, though, so Mark Lee and Haechan opening the first episode was an accessible experience for me), the show has yet to sell to me the group. I was invested in the first episode because I am familiar with the two idols from their membership in another group. But getting a feel of the group as a whole, it wasn’t bringing me in yet.

It feels as if the show is tailor-made for the existing fans of NCT 127. Just more content that allows the fans to feel closer to their idols. Maybe as the next three episodes unfold, getting to know the other members might help a non-fan like me to see what NCT 127 is all about and what makes them special from all the other groups that are out there today.

It’s an interesting approach, though, to take: allowing the members to discuss their lost childhood. It opens up and implies what is lost when becoming an idol. Sure, these young men are dressed in designer clothes, are famous, and followed wherever they go. They get to sing and dance for a living, which is something they probably wanted to do (for Haechan, that was something that was passed down from his musician parents) but it comes at a great cost.

By using the creative execution of their stories, though, it can distract from the human element of sadness and maybe regret that can surface in recollections such as these. The fact that the process requires acting, costumes, and choreography can distance you from the actual heart of the message. It turns their stories into entertainment rather than a true meditation on the cost of fame.

Ending the episode with a performance from one of their hit songs may also be another way of catching the attention of non-fans and bringing them into the fandom, or just another way to satisfy the fans’ need for more content to watch and enjoy.

‘NCT 127: The Lost Boys’ is a glossy, refined docu-series that feels set to bring new people into the world of the idol group while giving longtime fans a deeper look into the inner worlds of the idols. It will strengthen that bond that is already there, but it won’t humanize them as much as the show envisions. It continues to prop them up as superstars and entertainers. Their humanity gets lost in the production values and creativity.

    My Rating:

    stars 3 5

  • Not-For-Kids “Strays” Dog movie subverts genre with a Powerhouse Comedic Voice Cast

The latest dog movie, not for children though, Strays starring the voices of Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher, Park Randall, Josh Gad, Sofia Vergara, Harvey Guillen, Robb Riggle, Brett Gelman and Jamie Demetriou is an R-rated (R-16 in PH) live-action comedy that trails the misadventures of an abandoned Border Terrier who learned to survive on the streets along with his newfound pals while trying to find his way back home.

Strays Reggie Maggie Hunter and Bug

From the highly-successful Barbie, Will Ferrell takes off his CEO suit and lends voice to Reggie, a naïve optimistic Border Terrier who found genuine friendship on the streets with a fast-talking, foul-mouthed horny Boston Terrier named Bug (voiced by Oscar®   winner Jamie Foxx), a smart Australian Shepherd named Maggie (Isla Fisher, Now You See Me) and Hunter (Randall Park, Always Be My Maybe), an anxious Great Dane – together, they hatch a plan and embark on an epic adventure to help Reggie find his way home and make his owner Doug (Will Forte) pay for abandoning him. Reggie believes he has the best life, and owner ever. Blinded by love, Reggie doesn’t see that Doug is repeatedly trying to ditch him. So, when Doug finally abandons Reggie on the streets during a game of “fetch and fuck,” Reggie doesn’t initially think that he has much in common with the stray dogs he meets.

Directed by Josh Greenbaum, Strays reinvents the dog movies we’re all used to while retaining what the world loves about dogs – on love, loyalty, and friendship. While the core of the adventure is Reggie and his hilarious, disgusting journey of redemption and triumph over an abusive owner, ultimately, it’s the bond of ride-or-die friendship that develops between Reggie and his fellow strays that gives the film it’s emotional bite.

Ferrell was immediately amused by the concept of an R-rated dog film, but it was the heart of it that hooked him. “I immediately loved that the premise emulated a Homeward Bound type of dog movie with a journey behind it, yet it’s filthy and R-rated,” Ferrell says. “I remember thinking it could be really great and could be something we’ve never seen before. The audaciousness of the premise and the sweet, earnest relationships between the dogs surprised me.”

Foxx connected with Bug’s canine-liberation ethos and hedonist world view. “He’s the friend that Reggie never knew he needed because Reggie has been burned by this blind commitment to a human who treats him like garbage. Bug’s got some battle scars, and he is the only one who can help Reggie survive on the streets. Strays is over-the-top funny and raunchy, but it also has a ton of heart. I think that’s what audiences will be drawn to when they see it,” says Foxx.

    Strays Isla Fisher voices Maggie
    Isla Fisher voices Maggie

Fisher was drawn to Maggie because of the character’s fearlessness. “What I love about Maggie is that she is surrounded by neurotic male dogs and is certain of her own worth in the pack,” Fisher says. “She’s unapologetic, brave and willing to fight for what she believes in. I couldn’t imagine a better role model, canine or otherwise, and I’m proud to give voice to her.”

Strong as a mastiff and fast as a Whippet, the only thing Great Dane Hunter can’t handle is physical violence. Randall Park who voices Hunter Park immediately sparked to the film’s script and premise.  “Hunter’s this big dopey Great Dane who just couldn’t cut it as a police dog, but he has the heart of a lion,” Park says. “He’s very unsure of himself at the beginning of this journey but comes into his own through the help of his fellow strays. He’s the perfect example of not judging a book by its cover.”

    Strays Randall Park as Hunter
    Randall Park as Hunter

Once the dogs completed production on Strays, any animal who didn’t already have a permanent home with the trainers was found a loving one with screened individuals who would give their beloved new family member a fulfilling life. In fact, one of the dogs was adopted by director Josh Greenbaum. “When we brought in two adorable puppy Border Terriers to play young Reggie in an early scene of the film, it was made known to me that these dogs wouldn’t have a home after the shoot,” Greenbaum says. “So, I decided to adopt one of them and asked my kids to name him. They immediately said we’ve got to name him Reggie because he played Reggie in the movie. I came home after shooting the film, introduced Reggie to the family, and now I have Will Ferrell in my house.”

A dog film only for adults, rated R-16 by the local censors board, Strays is from Universal Pictures International and will open September 13 in cinemas nationwide.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: No Underdogs in this Underdog Story: a review of ‘Gran Turismo’

‘Gran Turismo’ has all the glitz and the gloss that comes with a movie based on a PlayStation game. It has a particular sheen in the cinematography and a snap in its editing rhythm that gives you the feel that its youthful and fresh and money was spent on this movie. Right in the first 15 minutes of the film, you are presented with a marketing pitch to try and bring interest back into buying cars by Orlando Bloom playing marketing executive Danny Moore. He talks about how the PlayStation Game Gran Turismo is less of a game than it is a simulator and whips up a scheme to get people talking. He wants to take the best Gran Turismo players from all over the world and train them to be actual race car drivers and race for Nissan.

From the get-go, you are already being sold something: from how great the game is to how innovative and open-minded Nissan is to such a crazy idea. Throughout the film, you are reminded how close to reality the game Gran Turismo is to real racing, how incredible the Nissan team are, and all the other product shots that you see scattered throughout the film.

‘Gran Turismo’ can sometimes feel like a 134-minute commercial for a whole lot of things.

Gran Turismo Based on a True Story Archie Madekwe David Harbour Large

Except, a good underdog, sports movie – when executed very well – can overshadow a lot of its flaws if it hits all its narrative beats properly and told with a sincerity that feels genuine (or at the very least familiar). And this is something that director Neil Blomkamp manages to deliver, surprisingly, by the halfway mark of the film. Known for more bombastic fare like ‘Chappie’ and ‘Elysium,’ he hadn’t been able to show this level of heart as he has in his debut film ‘District 9.’ He’s grown as a director and has learned to balance out the fun, race car stunts with the emotional core of the film.

Gran Turismo Based on a True Story David Harbour Large

Because at the center of the story is Jann Mardenborough (played by an arresting Archie Madekwe of ‘Teen Spirit’ and ‘Midsommar’ fame). Jann is a young man of working-class origin and whose love for the game Gran Turismo is a disappointment for his working class father (played by Djimon Hounsou), a former football player. He makes it to GT Academy, the name of the school that would train the video game players and turn them into real race car drivers. Here, he has to prove to everyone, including the head trainer at GT Jack Salter (played by David Harbour of ‘Stranger Things’ fame) that he has what it takes to achieve his dream of being an actual race car driver.

In the first half of the film, Blomkamp does everything he can to prove that not only is Gran Turismo an excellent simulator for actual racing (and by doing so, is probably trying to convince more people to buy the game, if they already haven’t) but also to prove that Mardenborough really has what it takes to become a race car driver and compete professionally. The film starts to break down from its capitalist shine and starts to take on the emotional beats of an underdog film.

Gran Turismo Based on a True Story Neill Blomkamp Jann Mardenborough Large

Yes, Jann is great and he’s a natural, but can he get over all the things that are in his head that gets in his way? Will the fallen-from-grace trainer find redemption through his new protege? Will Team Nissan prove that Gran Turismo players can learn race car driving just like that and go toe-to-toe with the pros?

Blomkamp uses great music, fast editing, and puts his camera right at the spaces where Mardenborough is tested as a human being and as an athlete. Madekwe carries the film with such charisma that somehow you get drawn to the story and it becomes even more shocking when you find out it’s really a true story and they show you photos of the actual people and the actual events side-by-side with the stills of the movie at the end.

As someone who was not at all aware of these events, everything hit me quite strongly and it had that full inspirational effect that a good underdog sports movie can give you. It makes you believe in the world and in yourself.

Gran Turismo Based on a True Story Archie Madekwe Jann Mardenborough Large

And as wonderful as the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough is, the big winners in all of this was Nissan and PlayStation. Regardless of what would have become the outcome of the story, the attention that it brought in, fueled also by the profits they gained sort of overshadows any underdog appeal. The bright, glitzy, polished sheen of the movie also hijacks the tone. Sure, it makes you feel good until you realise you may just want to buy something afterwards.

So great filmmaking, solid performances, but like the opening of the movie showed us: it was a marketing pitch through and through.
