A Blockbuster Debut That Tops the Charts
The futuristic action thriller Mercy has stormed its way to No. 1 at the U.S. box office, delivering an impressive debut that ends Avatar: Fire and Ash’s five-week reign. With its high-stakes premise and timely themes, the film has quickly captured the attention of audiences and critics alike.

Set in a not-too-distant future, Mercy centers on Detective Chris Raven (Chris Pratt), who is accused of killing his wife. Given just 90 minutes to prove his innocence, Raven must plead his case before an advanced A.I. judge named Maddox (Rebecca Ferguson). If he fails, the punishment is final, the death penalty.
A Story Where Technology Meets Humanity
Beyond its action-packed surface, Mercy explores deeper questions about justice, accountability, and artificial intelligence. Chris Pratt highlights how both lead characters undergo powerful emotional arcs throughout the film.
“Chris Raven’s story is his attempt to establish he’s not guilty while being forced to come to terms with his demons,” says Pratt, “but an equally incredible arc is the character of Judge Maddox, who feels like a cold, calculating computer program but through the course of the film actually becomes more sentient. She’s a character who essentially is trying to hide the humanity creeping up inside of her programming.”

The film reflects modern concerns about AI’s growing role in society, particularly within systems meant to uphold fairness and truth.
“In a way, the film could be seen as offering a sort of Bill of Rights about how AI should be controlled, if it ever finds its way into the justice system,” Pratt continues. “Who knows what advances will be made between now and 2029? Maybe in a few years, someone will watch this film and say, ‘Wow, they got that right!’”
Chris Pratt Sends a Special Greeting to Pinoy Fans
Adding to the excitement, Chris Pratt has shared a special video greeting exclusively for Filipino audiences, expressing his gratitude and enthusiasm ahead of the film’s Philippine release.
