  • A Special Wednesday: Oh Crop! Adlai Rice Dominating Manila’s Restaurants

OhCrop! Brand adlai hosted its first “OhCropWednesday” event at Marvin Agustin’s Cochi Bistro at the Bonifacio Global City last March 8, 2023.

The intimate event feted influencers, celebrity chefs and close friends alike with a custom menu featuring the Philippines’ healthy, indigenous grain.

Adlai’s taste-full potential was unleashed in several courses.

From left to right: Redge Tolentino, Kit Robles, Mags Fetalino, Marvin Agustin, Rose Tolentino, Chari Mendoza & Mark Justin Antonio.

Amongst these were Fat Seed’s Chef Bryant Dee’s creamy Saffron Seafood Risotto – a paella-style dish with clams, shrimp and squid, steeped in rich saffron and other spices.

Another crowd-favorite was Burrow and Lula Cafe’s Chef Dani’s Salmon Truffle Adlai – a light main featuring the flavors of fresh basil, cherry tomatoes in balsamic vinegar, and truffle essence.

Chef Marvin Agustin’s signature hearty Cochinillo was the supper’s mainstay.

It was accompanied by his Korean Uni Adlai (a Korean-inspired, pilaf-textured fried adlai rice sautéed to perfection with Kimchi, topped with sriracha-mayo, sprinkled with Nori flakes and fresh Uni), and Shiitake Mushroom Adlai (fried in garlic, onion leeks, Shiitake and oyster mushrooms flambeed with Shao Xing wine seasoned with special spices, drizzled with sesame oil, and garnished with chopped leeks).

The ever-endearing Chef Wado of Wadoughs Cake Studio ended the events with nostalgia. His Adlai Champorado upgrades a Filipino staple into a refined classic, fusing melted coconut and evaporated milk with 100% Davao tablea, before being dusted with muscovado sugar and topped with crunchy cacao nibs.

Between dishes, diners were also regaled with OhCrop! adlai cooking experiences by the chosen chefs, personal anecdotes by mother/influencer Kit Bernardino-Robles (@HappyHome.Mom), and the sustainable and ethical sourcing of OhCrop! Adlai by its CFO, Magellan Fetalino

Slated as a monthly event meant to increase awareness for adlai as a healthy, local, and tasteful alternative to similar grains like quinoa, amaranth, and basmati, “OhCrop! Wednesday” is shaping up to be a fun gathering of like-minded fine-diners who don’t always have to take themselves too seriously – much like the OhCrop! brand.

  • MrBeast Is Coming: Global YouTube Star’s Burger Joint is now in Manila

Global YouTube sensation Jimmy Donaldson, popularly known as “MrBeast,” is bringing his famous burger chain to the Philippines on March 22, 2023. This fast-growing virtual restaurant serves meaty burgers and chicken sandwiches that will surely be loved by MrBeast’s loyal followers and food lovers alike.

    Beastly beginnings

MrBeast Burgers began as a unique pop-up restaurant last November 2020, when MrBeast and his closest friends Chandler, Chris, and Karl launched the “world’s first free restaurant” in Wilson, North Carolina. Aside from Burgers, they also gave away stacks of cash to customers, and brand-new gadgets through drive-thru pick-ups. Millions of fans came, and the YouTube video about the event garnered over 125 million views.

The success of the pop-up led to the creation of an all-digital MrBeast Burgers joint, where customers can only order through any existing delivery app or download the exclusive MrBeast Burgers app. The ghost kitchen launch was yet another success with sold-out orders across 300 contracted locations in the United States.

Last September 4, MrBeast opened a physical burger restaurant at the American Dream Mall in New Jersey, USA with thousands of fans lining up to try MrBeast’s menu. Over 5,500 burgers were ordered during the event, setting a new record for the most burgers sold by a single restaurant in one day.

    Chris Style crispy yellow bg

MrBeast Burgers offer a variety of choices with their bestsellers named after the founders, Chandler Style, Chris Style, Beast Style, and Karl’s Deluxe Burgers. These well-loved burgers are known for its smash burger style – with patties smashed on the grill, cooked to deliver twice the flavor in one dish.

Fans can also try Jimmy’s Favorites, which include Chocolate Chip Cookie, Chicken Sandwich Combo, Beast Style Fries, and Beast Style Burger Combo. Other options are crispy chicken tenders, Karl’s grilled cheese, and the Nashville Hot Chicken Tender sandwich.

Bringing the Beast to SouthEast Asia

After their record-breaking debut in New Jersey, MrBeast sets his sights on expanding overseas- particularly in the Philippines. MrBeast Burgers’ operation in the country will be under JustKitchen Philippines, a leading world-class virtual kitchen operator founded by experienced food service industry professionals.

    Nashville crispy yellow bg

JustKitchen is a platform that makes it possible for delivery-only restaurants to operate efficiently at lower overhead costs and less wastage. They have a network of “hub and spoke” kitchens, bringing in several food brands in the country such as InLuck, Master Don, and now Mr.Beast Burgers. Much like the digital venture of MrBeast Burgers, in which the operations are made possible with the help of third-party couriers and apps, MrBeast burgers will also be available to order on GrabFood for delivery and pick up.

Like the hit launch of their first pop-up, MrBeast Burgers will take Manila by storm on the week of March 22 with free burgers, free fries, and BOGO on their bestsellers for customers. This iconic launch, followed by a series of activations, is an event that fans, foodies, and curious customers wouldn’t want to miss. Updates will be posted on the Facebook pages and other social media accounts of MrBeast Burger PH and JustKitchen PH. Check out their official website and online menu to know more about MrBeast Burgers, the team behind it, and what you can expect for the launch.

  • Exquisite Explorations: Hotel Okura Manila serves Saga Wagyu & Sake Pairings in a six course Dinner

Hotel Okura Manila invites guests and patrons to travel by taste to the historical Saga Prefecture in Japan through a six-course dinner featuring the globally-esteemed Saga Wagyu beef, elevated with authentic sake pairings. Four kitchen masters, including guest chef Hiroki Samata of the Federal Meat Academy of Japan, collaborate in curating a tasting menu that traverses through different interpretations of the premium beef.

    SAGA Beef17

For starters, Saga-Gyu is made from the finest breeds of Japanese cattle raised on fertile farmlands within the prefecture. These black-haired cattle are perfectly embraced by the region’s mild climate, clean air, and fresh water. The highly-maintained standards – from being raised in agricultural-association-designated farms and rigorous grading processes, places Saga beef among the best of over 200 beef brands in Japan carrying a grade of 4 (or A4) by the country’s meat grading standards.  In addition, its characteristics of tsuya-sashi or marbling is so outstanding, the shades of the cross-section are reminiscent of that of a cherry blossom flower.

With a rating of 7 (the highest within the range of A4 grade meat), the marbling becomes an unwrapped gift of flavors when cooked.

    Picture2

With its arrival in Newport World Resorts, frequenters and enthusiasts alike are in for a spectacular culinary treat. Hiroki Samata brings in years of skills sharpened by experience as a Master Butcher and faculty member of The Federal Meat Academy, a unique school located in Gunma, Japan, that advances the appreciation and knowledge of all skills associated with the processing and marketing of various kinds of meats.

The courses are paired with premium Sake for superior dining experience. The drinks include Sunflower and Strawberry-flavored drink from the historically-rich Amabuki Junmai, the award-wining bottles from Tenzan Sake Brewery, Shichida Junmai.
