  • DISNEY+ REVIEW: The First Four Episodes of ‘Furious’ Check All the Boxes for a Woman-Centered Cop Show on Female Rage

DISNEY+ REVIEW: The First Four Episodes of ‘Furious’ Check All the Boxes for a Woman-Centered Cop Show on Female Rage

I really like Emmy Rossum. I’ve been a fan of hers since her performance in the TV series ‘Shameless’ and I find her to be such an arresting onscreen presence. She’s very good at portraying characters that are tough and fragile at the same time. In the new Hulu show on Disney+ Furious, she uses that to full effect to play an FBI agent who is after a serial killer while dealing with her own demons.

Furious, created by Elizabeth Meriwether, is a crime show that follows Alice Black (Rossum), an FBI agent who left the New York Police Department over tensions between herself and a co-worker with whom she was romantically involved. That tension her pushed out of the force, and the people she once called her friends are no longer speaking to her, except for Detective Danny (Scoot McNairy). She’s drawn into the murder of the son of a billionaire, whose death resembles an earlier case that Alice and Danny had worked on together. Now, they are on the hunt for a young woman (Lola Petticrew) who is out to kill more and more people connected to her past as a victim of human trafficking.

    Furious

There’s an air of darkness and heaviness with each episode – it’s probably a show you’d want to watch once a week – and while the detective work is happening, we are also seeing the killer in action. We watch how she plans, schemes, avoids detection, and leaves no trace.

What the show does is pit these two women against each other; two women who have a lot more in common than they think. Because Alice Black is not some cookie-cutter FBI agent. You wouldn’t get Emmy Rossum for that. She’s a broken woman; traumatized by what her ex (Jake Lacy) has done to her, who uses that trauma to fuel her desire to work in a FBI unit focused on victims of violent crimes, specifically children and women. Alice is neither nice nor kind. Early on in the series, we see that outside work hours, behind closed doors, she prefers her sexual exploits to be violent. She barely sleeps. She’s also not above lying during witness and suspect interrogations to get the responses she needs.

    178916 0501 V1 Disney Sarah Shatz 1

From the first four episodes of the show, we get the feeling that this is a world that is unkind, even cruel, to women and that the most affected have to fight back at full force. Alice, and even her mentor in her new department, Nora (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), are constantly on the offensive. But so is the killer, who steals the identity of Jenny in episode two.

    Furious

The story of “Jenny” is revealed piece by piece with each episode, both through her own actions and through Alice’s own investigation. By centering the show on these two women who are propelled forward by their trauma, what we get is a dark and heavy procedural drama with a very strong feminist narrative about women’s rage. The title itself is apt, even if the anger is one that is slowly building. Each episode pushes both women further and further to a point of no return, and it’s interesting to see how this eight-episode series will end.

    Disney+ Furious

The inclusion of a billionaire along with themes of misogyny and feminine rage all seem so topical that its story can feel like a hard sell. But what keeps it moving and interesting to watch is how insightful the show is in depicting the many ways women have been treated over the years and are still being treated today, especially in male-dominated fields such as this. Rossum and Bernstine are excellent at embodying this, while McNairy provides great support for Rossum’s Alice. Petticrew feels like the weakest link here; she is never quite scary enough to fully sell the character, though she improves by episode four when we see more of who her character is and her backstory. As a mystery, she isn’t interesting enough, but with a past, she’s giving it her all. It’s a dark, heavy show that checks all the boxes – women-centered, police procedural, hard-hitting, unapologetic – anchored by a great cast led by the incredible Emmy Rossum.

  • FX’s “The Shards” Unveils Gripping Trailer Ahead of August 6 Disney+ PH Premiere

FX’s “The Shards” Unveils Gripping Trailer Ahead of August 6 Disney+ PH Premiere

Disney+ has released the official trailer for FX’s “The Shards,” offering viewers a striking first look at the seductive new drama from executive producer Ryan Murphy.

Adapted from the acclaimed bestselling novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the series will debut with its first two episodes on Thursday, August 6, at 9:00 a.m., exclusively on Disney+ Philippines.

    Privilege, Obsession, and Fear Collide

Set in the sun-soaked yet sinister world of 1980s Los Angeles, “The Shards” follows a group of wealthy high school seniors attending an elite preparatory school.

On the surface, their lives appear effortless. They move through a world filled with lavish parties, beauty, status, and excess. Beneath the glamour, however, jealousy, desire, and obsession begin to expose the cracks in their seemingly perfect lives.

As the teenagers struggle with identity, relationships, and the pressures of adolescence, a far more terrifying threat begins to close in.

    A Mysterious Arrival Changes Everything

At the center of the story is Bret, played by Igby Rigney, an observant teenager with dreams of becoming a writer.

Bret carefully studies the people and events around him, but his grip on reality begins to weaken after the arrival of Robert Mallory, portrayed by Homer Gere.

Charismatic, secretive, and impossible to ignore, Robert transfers to the school shortly before senior year. His appearance coincides with the growing panic surrounding The Trawler, a serial killer targeting teenagers throughout Los Angeles.

With each new incident, Bret becomes increasingly suspicious of Robert. What begins as curiosity soon develops into a consuming fixation, blurring the line between instinct, paranoia, and dangerous obsession.

A Glamorous Group Pulled into Darkness

Bret is surrounded by an affluent and tightly connected social circle made up of Susan Reynolds, played by Kaia Gerber; Debbie Schaffer, played by Hayes Warner; and Thom Wright, played by Graham Campbell.

Together, they move through a polished world of privilege, temptation, and hidden tensions. Their friendships are tested as fear spreads across the city and the darker side of their relationships comes into focus.

The promise of their youth also stands in sharp contrast to the troubled adults around them.

Wes Bentley stars as Terry Schaffer, while Evan Rachel Wood plays Liz Schaffer. Jordan Roth joins the cast as Steven Reinhardt.

As secrets build and suspicions intensify, the characters are drawn further into a world where beauty can conceal danger and desire can have deadly consequences.

Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis Join Creative Forces

“The Shards” unites the distinctive storytelling styles of Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis, two creators known for exploring provocative characters, complicated relationships, and the darker corners of American culture.

Faker, TXT’s Beomgyu, and Max Changmin Join Disney+’s “Murder Club: Liar’s Table,” Premiering July 29

A table full of suspects. One hidden culprit. No one can be trusted.

Disney+ is set to premiere “Murder Club: Liar’s Table” on July 29, introducing an AI-driven murder mystery game show where celebrity players must separate fact from fiction before the real culprit escapes suspicion.

    1 9

Blending immersive storytelling, psychological strategy, and high-stakes deduction, the new Korean variety show challenges its cast to solve elaborate murder cases while one player secretly works against the group.

A High-Stakes Battle of Lies and Logic

In “Murder Club: Liar’s Table,” an all-star group of participants enters a realistic world of deception, hidden motives, and carefully planted evidence.

Each case unfolds across a different setting, from the Joseon Dynasty to a modern baseball field and even a prison. AI-generated video sequences help bring the events surrounding each fictional murder to life, giving players a closer look at the clues, circumstances, and possible motives behind the crime.

Still, solving the mystery will not be easy.

With only limited evidence available, the players must question one another, spot contradictions, and piece together the truth. At the same time, the concealed culprit must misdirect the group, defend suspicious behavior, and avoid exposure until the final moment.

Every accusation could reveal the truth. Then again, it could also help the culprit win.

An All-Star Cast Takes a Seat at the Table

Produced by KJH Studio and Skaper AI, the series brings together familiar personalities from gaming, entertainment, sports, food, comedy, and online media.

The cast includes travel YouTuber Pani Bottle, professional gamer Faker, veteran comedian Choi Yangrak, comedian Eom Jiyoon, actor Shin Sungrok, and viral creator Kim Seontae.

    5

They will be joined by TVXQ!’s Max Changmin, professional baseball player Kim Hyunsoo, TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s Beomgyu, and “Culinary Class Wars” chef Park Juseong.

With players coming from such different backgrounds, each participant is expected to bring a distinct strategy to the game. Some may rely on sharp observation. Others could use instinct, persuasion, humor, or a convincing poker face.

And seated among them, quietly shaping the game, is the culprit.

More Korean Variety Entertainment on Disney+

“Murder Club: Liar’s Table” joins Disney+’s expanding lineup of Korean variety programs and APAC Originals.

Viewers can also stream “Battle of Fates,” a supernatural reality competition where 49 fate readers compete against one another, as well as “I Am Boxer,” which follows 90 boxing hopefuls battling for the chance to become Korea’s next boxing icon.

    4 5

Also available is “The Zone: Survival Mission,” featuring Yu Jaeseok, Kwon Yuri, Dex, and Kim Donghyun as they take on a series of increasingly chaotic and hilarious survival challenges.

From intense competitions to unpredictable reality formats, the platform offers a growing selection of Korean entertainment for fans looking for something suspenseful, funny, or completely unexpected.

  • DISNEY+ SEASON 2 REVIEW: ‘X-Men ‘97’ Hits the Ground Running and Keeps Up the Fun

DISNEY+ SEASON 2 REVIEW: ‘X-Men ‘97’ Hits the Ground Running and Keeps Up the Fun

The second season of X-Men ‘97 hits the ground running, finding our lovable band of mutants separated across time. While one team is stranded in the ancient past, the other fights to survive in the future. The first two episodes set the mood up for the rest of the nine-episode season, which seems to center on the X-Men battling it off against the iconic mutant overlord, Apocalypse.

The first episode brings us to a bleak future where Jean Grey and Cyclops finally get a chance to spend time with their son, Nathan, whom they had sent to the future to protect him from a virus that inhabits his body. It may be a chance for Jean Grey and Cyclops to reunite with their son but this is a timeline where Apocalypse is at absolute height of his power. The undying mutant is coming for Nathan, seeking to claim the boy’s unique body as the perfect immortal vessel for his consciousness.

The second episode shifts focus to the modern era, following the grown-up Nathan, now known as Cable, as he recruits Jubilee and Sunspot to hunt down any trace of Apocalypse. Their mission gets in the crosshairs with X-Factor, the government’s mutant task force. What follows is a thrilling, explosive clash between X-Factor versus Cable’s makeshift X-Force.

Much like the first season, each episode covers a whole range of comic book condensed into an enjoyable 22-30 minute episode. While narrative beats are quick and the character arcs go through the motions at a record pace, the series maintains its energy going and it gives you everything you could ask for in its roughly 30-minute runtime. A show like this feels better binged than watched episodic so it’s good that the first three episodes will drop in bulk. Fortunately, Disney+ launched the premier with a bulk drop of the first three episodes, followed by weekly releases leading us to the grand finale on August 12.

Funnily enough, the second episode features a completely different opening sequence. If each episode follows suit, it will be interesting to see how these storylines and rapidly expanding character rosters ultimately converge in the finale. If they plan to finish off the entire Apocalypse storyline in this season – rumours have it that Season 3 and 4 are already in active development – it would need a huge cast to take down this big bad.

With its bite-sized episodes, the series does an admirable job of giving us some meaningful highlights for each character. The premiere grants both Jean Grey and Storm great scenes, while the second episode shines a well-deserved spotlight on Jubilee. Additionally, the darker themes it explores, especially regarding Cable and his methods, are pretty interesting addition to the show.

A lot of the storylines that I’m aware of have already been tackled in season one so I’m seeing the last few adaptations of the books I read back in the 90s in these episodes. However, the show takes significant liberties with X-Factor. While they were one of my favourite groups in the source material, they seem to have been noticeably rewritten here to simplify the story and avoid overcomplicating things too much.

Having separated the team means that viewers might want to stick around and see how everyone and everything comes together. This feels like a full-on story now, having found success in the first season; they can be more playful with their narrative choices on this one.

If they keep this up, this will be a fun watch.

    My Rating: 4 Stars
