  • Disney+ Review: ‘The Shards’ Boasts Unlikable Characters in a World That Celebrates Privilege and Excess

Disney+ Review: ‘The Shards’ Boasts Unlikable Characters in a World That Celebrates Privilege and Excess

There is a smugness and a seemingly celebratory tone to the all the excess and privilege surrounding the characters of Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis’ new Disney+ streaming series, The Shards. Based on Ellis’ semi-autobiographical, metafictional novel of the same name (which originated as a serialized audiobook), The Shards is a coming-of-age horror-thriller set in early 1980s in Los Angeles. It follows a group of wealthy, self-possessed high school seniors during an era when serial killers and cults were in everywhere.

The series is narrated by its protagonist, Bret (Igby Rigney), an aspiring novelist. He narrates the events of his senior year from the future, which allows him to editorialize and to talk with some hindsight about what is to transpire on the show. Bret is a rich kid, whose parents are never home, and lives a life defined by reckless excess – drinking, drug use, and fast driving with his best friends, Susan (Kaia Gerber) and Thom (Graham Campbell), alongside his girlfriend Debbie (Hayes Warner), all who share his same proclivities. Together, they all drink, take drugs, throw massive parties, have a lot of sex, and are completely self-possessed, with barely any adult supervision. But their senior year would be predicated by the arrival of a serial killer known only as “The Trawler,” while cultists have been attacking neighbouring cities and coming ever closer. And all this coincides with a new kid in school, Robert (Homer Gere), who first captures the eye of the gender-fluid Bret, only to quickly transform into his primary nemesis.

    The Shards

Guided by Bret’s narration, we see a world that is very much like any Bret Easton Ellis novel (I’ve read a few and seen some of the movie adaptations of his works). It’s cynical and nihilistic. It parodies but, inadvertently, celebrates the cold, almost dismissive nature of his characters – very gorgeous, very rich, very elitist – which makes them very hard to like or root for. In the first four episodes, they take everything for granted. They smoke and drink and take drugs and feel untouchable. Driving their own expensive cars and have money in excess to throw lavish parties and think they are on top of the world.

Consequently, the arrival of The Trawler and the intermittent mentions of the cultists roaming around their Los Angeles playground, creates tension and fear. Except I found myself actively rooting for their demise rather than hoping for their survival. It is a strange feeling to have on a series that attempts to frame these characters as tragic victims of their own privilege and wealth.

    The Shards

When the initial murders happen, and of course, it is to people around them, I found myself least interested in The Trawler and more excited about finding out when he begins to go after our protagonists, most especially the aloof and intensely self-centered Bret.

True to the signature styles of both Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis, the entire cast is gorgeous. There’s also quite a lot of nudity and objectification of their bodies – especially the male ones – which can be a draw. As Bret (yes, the lead character has the same name as the author) continues to explore his gender fluidity, he is equally cognizant of the bodies of his friends and the camera follows suit. Murphy, directing the first two episodes, is sure to put the camera right where we can see every taut muscle, every gorgeous smile, every curve of the bodies of his actors and actresses. Yet. despite this intimate lens. it doesn’t humanize them.

The pacing is very good, maintaining a constant sense of something is about to happen. The mystery of Robert and Bret’s obsession with him intersects with Bret’s own fears about The Trawler that we are meant to feel that they are connected; but it will not be that simple. Other than the sex and drugs, the show is also unapologetic to show off the dirtier side of Hollywood; as Debbie’s parents are in showbusiness. Prostitution, implied sex with teens, and other taboos are scattered into the episodes to make a show that is meant to shock us but provide no real profound insight into the state of human nature.

Because the show’s direction refrains from taking a moral stance, it presents these images and situations in a glossy, hyper-charged manner that gives the impression that Murphy and Ellis find this entertaining. The only character who ever almost reaches the precipice of depth is Kaia Gerber’s Susan. She’s a young woman who is growing out of her high school sweetheart, Thom, and is at the edge of growing up but she’s always undermined by her own privilege. She’s the only character I’m rooting for; hoping she’d break through the shallowness of Murphy and Ellis’ world.

Much like Ellis’ ‘American Psycho,‘ The Shards is obsessed with brand names and standout symbols that signal luxury and status. It is the celebratory tone of all this excess that I find truly disturbing; all amplified by the smugness of the lead character’s narration. He considers himself cool and undeniably important. And the fact that the narration is done in the future, as he looks back into his youth, it leaves a frightening thought that he is going to survive the horrors of this story entirely untamed and unhumbled.

Ultimately, The Shards will be a difficult series to sit through, though I have hate-watched shows before. And the male objectification is done in the usual sensuality that Ryan Murphy is good at; so that’s a bonus (though they are all white people). I’m really hoping for Susan’s character to find growth. That’s the only thing I’m really sticking around for the rest of the season.

Kris Aquino Makes a Fabulous Comeback as Netflix’s New C.H.I.K.A.

The Queen of All Media has a new title, and it is every bit as playful as you would expect.

Kris Aquino is back in the spotlight as Netflix’s official C.H.I.K.A., short for Chief Head of Insights and Kontent Analysis. True to form, Kris steps into the role with plenty of personality, sharp observations, and the kind of candid reactions fans have missed.

Kris Aquino Is Back With Her Signature Commentary

In Netflix’s latest video, Kris joins editor Earljohn for what appears to be her very first day on the job.

Rather than simply watching from the sidelines, she gets involved in the creative process by reviewing three clips that could use a little extra polish. There is a snowy winter scene, an action-packed fight sequence, and a styling moment that immediately catches her attention.

Of course, Kris does not hold back.

With her trademark humor and discerning eye, she dishes out suggestions on how each scene can be improved. Earljohn then takes her comments and works them into the edit, adding effects, filters, and finishing touches along the way.

Giving Filipino Titles the Kris Aquino Seal of Approval

The featured clips come from A Secret in Prague, Blood vs Duty, and The Master Cutter, three Filipino titles now available on Netflix.

Under Kris’ watch, the scenes go through a glamorous little transformation, moving from moments that might make you say “nakakaloka!” to edits worthy of an enthusiastic “love, love, love!”

It is a fun reminder of what makes Kris such an unforgettable media personality. Whether she is reacting to fashion, drama, or a high-energy fight scene, she knows exactly how to turn an ordinary moment into something instantly entertaining.

  • DISNEY+ REVIEW: From a Slow Burn to an Explosive Ending, the Last Four Episodes of ‘Furious’ Are Worth the Wait

DISNEY+ REVIEW: From a Slow Burn to an Explosive Ending, the Last Four Episodes of ‘Furious’ Are Worth the Wait

By the end of its first four episodes, the Disney+ streaming show Furious finds FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) working towards solving the serial killer murders despite having almost everyone against her. There’s heat from above, including her own superior and mentor, Nora (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), and continuing aggression from her ex-lover on the police force (Jake Lacey). Her only friend, Detective Danny (Scoot McNairy), is struggling with his own feelings for Alice, further complicating an already delicate investigation. But the show’s title remains apt as none of this is getting in the way of Alice from solving this murder or from the serial killer, who goes by the name of Jenny (Lola Petticrew), to exact vengeance for the dark past that haunts her.

If the first four episodes were a slow burn, carefully maneuvering pieces across a chessboard toward a possible check, more of the characters come into play. We learn more and more about the sordid, twisted world of the billionaire who is at the center of all this human trafficking ring. The show brings us to the ways that they get away with literal murder and what Alice has to do to gather the evidence she needs to find some level of justice in this show’s cynical world where women have every right to their anger in the many ways by which they have been held back, oppressed, and violated.

FURIOUS – “First Look” – From Creator and Executive Producer Elizabeth Meriwether, “Furious” follows an FBI agent, Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating female serial killer. The final four episodes of this explosive series ramp up the tension, heighten the emotional stakes, and reveal to us the dark truth behind Jenny and even Alice’s dark past. It is suspenseful, action-packed, and filled with great crime procedural narrative beats that it gets better and better with every episode.

Through it all, Rossum delivers a fascinating study of unyielding persistence, portraying a woman who does not back down no matter how hard the world seems to be against her. We witness her grit as she confronts her own vulnerabilities, ghosts, and personal demons, and soldiers through regardless. She serves as a magnificent anchor to the series’ pervasive darkness, fully embracing it to help shape the show’s core identity.

In my review of the first four episodes, I noted that Lola Petticrew felt like the show’s weakest. However, across these final four episodes, as more of her past is revealed, and her own vulnerabilities are exposed, her acting prowess now shines. She proves to be a capable second lead, commanding the screen with her raw presence. As an actress, she’s able to do more heavy emotional lifting when she’s playing to the context her character is given. While in the first four episodes, she was working as a mystery. The danger was not that apparent. But now, as Jenny and Alice finally face-off, the two characters at opposite ends of the law, yet with a background that is so similar it’s almost identical; we see a kinship that helps amplify the show’s central themes.

    Furious

Furious is not a simple story of good versus evil. Instead, it exposes the inherent flaws and weakness of a legal system in handing out justice. While the show is centered in the American justice system, we can see the universality of how the rich manipulate the system to get away with whatever crime they see fit to commit. The series highlights the way women have always been treated by a patriarchal society that looks at them as possessions, exploiting their bodies and personas used for the pleasure of men. And for the women who are in positions of power and authority? People like Alice or Nora? They are constantly reminded about how low they are at the totem pole in the larger scheme of things.

While the finale closes the case, whether the resolution proves satisfying depends largely on the viewer. What the finale truly accomplishes is opening a can of worms that exposes the true cost of the darkness that has been inside Alice. Though the door remains open for a possibility for a second season if the series performs well, but if it ends the way that it does on episode eight, it’s a good enough ending for me.

  • Jodi Sta. Maria and Agot Isidro Face a Bittersweet Family Reunion in Netflix’s ‘Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon’ Official Trailer

Jodi Sta. Maria and Agot Isidro Face a Bittersweet Family Reunion in Netflix’s ‘Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon’ Official Trailer

Netflix has released the official trailer for Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon, an upcoming Filipino comedy-drama starring Jodi Sta. Maria and Agot Isidro.

Set to premiere globally on August 13, 2026, the film follows a fractured mother-daughter relationship shaped by years of distance, unresolved pain, and a life-changing secret.

At the center of the story is Joanne, played by Sta. Maria, a TV writer who has spent years rebuilding her life. Just when everything seems to be falling into place, her estranged mother, Paz, played by Isidro, suddenly returns after 27 years.

Her return, however, brings more than old memories.

A Mother-Daughter Story Rooted in Filipino Family Life

For Agot Isidro, the film’s emotional core is something many Filipino viewers may immediately recognize.

Speaking at the Next on Netflix Philippines event in February, Isidro highlighted how deeply family remains woven into Filipino culture.

    Netflix GGG 23

[We] Filipinos are very family-centric, so I really think we’re reaching out to our audience, she shared.

That sense of familiarity runs through Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon. The film explores what happens when love, resentment, obligation, and forgiveness exist all at once within a family.

Rather than presenting relationships as simple or sentimental, the story looks at how family can influence dreams, choices, and even the way people see themselves.

Finding Laughter in Heavy Family Drama

While the film tackles emotionally difficult themes, director Cholo H. Laurel wanted the story to feel true to how real families often deal with conflict.

If you look closely, drama is actually hilarious—especially family drama. The topics that we’re discussing here are already inherently heavy, so we wanted to lighten it up a little bit.

    Netflix GGG 31

That balance between humor and heartbreak gives the film its distinct tone.

One moment may be uncomfortable, the next unexpectedly funny. And just when things begin to feel light, an old wound or difficult truth can quickly change the mood.

It is a familiar rhythm for anyone who has experienced complicated family gatherings, awkward conversations, or years of feelings left unsaid.

    Twenty-Seven Years of Unfinished Business

The newly released trailer offers a glimpse of Joanne and Paz attempting to reconnect after nearly three decades apart.

But rebuilding a relationship after 27 years is hardly simple.

Joanne has created a life without her mother, while Paz returns carrying a secret that could change everything. As the two are forced back into each other’s lives, they must confront the reasons behind their estrangement and decide whether there is still room for forgiveness.

    Netflix GGG 9

Along the way, the film asks difficult questions about filial love, sacrifice, regret, and the choices people make for family.

More importantly, it examines whether time can truly heal old wounds, or whether healing only begins once people finally face them.

A Bittersweet Look at Love, Loss, and Second Chances

With Sta. Maria and Isidro leading the cast, Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon promises a heartfelt story that mixes sharp humor with emotional honesty.

The film explores how family can build a person up, break them down, and shape the decisions they carry throughout life.

It may be messy. It may hurt. It may even be funny when it probably should not be.

And that is exactly what makes the story feel so familiar.

Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon premieres globally on August 13, 2026, only on Netflix.

Netflix has unveiled the main poster and trailer for Our Sticky Love, an upcoming romantic comedy that blends memory loss, hidden secrets, and an unusual small-town romance.

Premiering August 7, the series stars Ha Young as Go Eun-sae, a prosecutor who suddenly wakes up without any memory of her past. Jung Hae-in plays Jang Tae-ha, a boxing coach who unexpectedly appears at her side and claims to be her boyfriend.

Thrown together under strange circumstances, Eun-sae and Tae-ha begin living under the same roof in a quiet rural town. What starts as an awkward and suspicious arrangement slowly develops into a playful, heartfelt romance.

A Love Story With a Sticky Twist

Director Kim Jang-han describes Our Sticky Love as a warm romantic comedy designed to leave viewers smiling.

“It’s a heart-warming, feel-good romantic comedy,” says director Kim Jang-han. “It’s a story about building love that binds two people as tightly as sticky, sweet Korean taffy.”

He also compares the show’s appeal to the famously chewy treat.

“The series’ irresistible charm will leave you unable to pull yourself away, just like getting stuck to Korean taffy before you even realize it,” adds the director

With its mix of gentle humor, mystery, and emotional warmth, the series promises a romance that grows stronger with every unexpected turn.

Eun-sae Wakes Up in an Unfamiliar World

The main trailer begins with Eun-sae opening her eyes inside a hospital in Gujin-gun, a quiet rural area known for its traditional taffy shops.

She has no idea where she is, how she arrived, or what happened before she woke up. Everything around her feels unfamiliar, from the peaceful streets of Taffy Village to the colorful residents who seem to know more than she does.

    Then Tae-ha arrives.

Calm and confident, he tells Eun-sae that he is her boyfriend. Unfortunately for him, she finds the claim difficult to believe.

His rough appearance does not match the kind of man she would normally choose, and his explanation only makes the situation more suspicious. Surrounded by strangers and unable to recall her own life, Eun-sae refuses to trust him.

    Suspicion Slowly Turns Into Affection

Despite Eun-sae’s resistance, Tae-ha remains gentle and attentive.

His patience begins to chip away at her defenses, while his obvious affection leaves her confused and flustered. Little by little, she becomes more comfortable around him. The tension between them softens, and moments of hesitation gradually give way to genuine smiles.

Their growing chemistry adds warmth and humor to the story, but the trailer makes it clear that their relationship is not as simple as it appears.

Just when Eun-sae starts to trust Tae-ha, he delivers a serious warning. No one can find out about them.

A Romance Bound by a Dangerous Secret

Tae-ha’s warning raises troubling questions about their past.

Why must their relationship remain hidden? What is he trying to protect Eun-sae from? And why does he insist that staying by his side is the safest choice for her?

As fragments of truth begin to surface, Eun-sae must decide whether Tae-ha is someone she can trust or someone connected to the mystery behind her memory loss.

Blending romance, comedy, and suspense, Our Sticky Love offers an offbeat story about two people tied together by affection, uncertainty, and a secret neither of them can easily escape.

Our Sticky Love streams August 7, exclusively on Netflix.
