  • For “Smile” Star Sosie Bacon, Horror Genre Runs in the Family

Trailer Courtesy of Paramount Pictures International

In Smile, after witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.

Bacon’s innate warmth and her natural gift for connecting with people struck director-writer Parker Finn as essential traits to portray an empathetic clinical psychiatrist. Just as importantly, she had the acting skill to capture the emotion and anxiety of someone on a perilous downward spiral. “I believe Sosie’s given one of the most astounding debut lead performances in recent years,” Finn says. “She’s in almost every scene, and she’s operating at extreme levels of stress, fear, and panic for most of the movie. Maintaining those emotions can really take a toll on an actor, but she’s deeply committed to her craft and just knocked it out of the park.”

Bacon describes Smile as an intense psychological horror film told through the eyes of a character that you can’t help but root for. “I play a woman who’s been coping with a lot of pain in her life, and after witnessing a violent incident at work, she’s forced to confront a supernatural threat that fixates on her,” she says. “It’s visually striking and it will absolutely freak you out!”

Although Bacon has been acclaimed for her nuanced supporting performances in film and television series including “Mare of Easttown” and “13 Reasons Why,” Smile represents the biggest role of her career so far, and she admits it affected her emotionally and physically. “Truthfully, I wasn’t fully aware of how much this part would wear on me when I began the movie,” she says. “It’s physically demanding, because your body doesn’t understand the difference between acting and real life. But honestly, I don’t know that anything can prepare you for an experience like Smile.”

Dusit Thani Manila has joined forces with Jakarta’s 5-star Hotel Borobudur to bring yet another vibrant culinary festival to its all-day dining restaurant, The Pantry.

This time, Dusit Thani Manila expands The Pantry’s buffet by holding the Indonesian Food Festival dubbed Lezat— meaning delicious— which will take guests on a gastronomic journey packed with culinary marvels of the country, courtesy of guest Chef Hendriyono who flew all the way from Hotel Borobudur to bring us a carefully curated menu of some of Indonesia’s finest culinary offerings.

    Dusit Thani Manila

The savory spreads of Lezat can be found at the far end of The Pantry, available alongside the in-house restaurant’s staples. Tucked in a corner is the highlight of the food festival, Hotel Borobudur’s legendary Sop Buntut. The oxtail soup is famous for its rich and flavorful broth with its equally-delicious oxtail meat and other mix-ins. They also have different toppings on display so you can tweak the taste of the soup to your liking.

Another soup that they serve is the Soto Ayam, a hearty chicken soup with the distinct flavor of turmeric.

While one might set their eyes on the Sop Buntut right away, Lezat’s rich spreads of dishes are also worth everyone’s attention. Excite your appetite with their lineup of appetizers such as their Balinese fish satay Sate Lilit Bali and the Sumatera fried dumplings Mpek mpek Palembang.

    Main Dishes

Moving on to their main dishes, guests can dive into a wide selection of delicious dishes. Have a bite of their Kambing Saus Kecap, which is roasted lamb with soy sauce and coriander, that will remind you of our very own adobo. Try their Bebek Goreng Madura, which is a crispy and flaky duck dish that’s rich in texture and taste. And enjoy the Daging Rendang Padang which is a Sumatera beef stew that is steeped with sumptuous flavor.

Aside from the spirits available at The Pantry’s bar counter, you can also opt for an Indonesian beverage made with coconut milk and pandan jelly, which is also a perfect drink to curb the heat from the buffet’s spicy offerings.

Added to The Pantry’s station of cakes and sweet treats are desserts from Indonesia, such as the Kolak Pisan Dan Ubi, Dadar Gulung Dengan and Pisang Goreng, akin to our own ginataan and kakanin, and elevated to cap off a satisfying meal of Indonesian delights.

The Indonesian food festival Lezat is now available on weekends at Dusit Thani Manila’s The Pantry until October 2. Enjoy these Indonesian delicacies on top of The Pantry’s buffet staples for P2,100++ per person for Friday and Saturday dinner buffet; and P2,500++ per person for Sunday brunch. A special a la carte menu will also be offered on regular days for lunch and dinner.

  • Film Facts: 5 Things to Know About ‘Don’t Worry Darling’

This week, Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling is dropping in Philippine cinemas!

Set in the ’50s, the film stars Florence Pugh and Harry Styles as the couple Alice and Jack who live in the idealized community of Victory, which is owned by a mysterious company.

Home to the families of the men who work for the company’s top-secret project, Victory is a tight-knit utopia where the people’s daily lives are influenced by the CEO, Frank (Chris Pine), who also serves as a life coach for the community. But when Alice begins to see cracks in their idyllic life, she sets out to discover the truth behind Victory and its sinister secrets.

Before Don’t Worry Darling hits theaters this week, we’ve rounded up a few facts about the movie from behind the scenes. Check them out below.

    1. Olivia Wilde is back in the director’s chair.

Before being credited as a director, Olivia Wilde is an actress who starred in movies like The Lazarus Effect and TRON: Legacy. She made her directorial debut in 2019 with the teen comedy flick Booksmart, making Don’t Worry Darling her second feature film as the director. Wilde also stars in the thriller as Bunny, Alice’s best friend.

    2. There were multiple bidders for Wilde’s script.

According to Deadline, there were 15 to 18 bidders who wanted to secure Wilde’s script with budgets of around $20M. Included in the lineup of studios that joined the bidding war were Netflix, MGM, Village Roadshow Pictures, Apple, and Universal-based Blumhouse. In the end, New Line Cinema, known for The Conjuring, IT, and the Final Destination franchises secured the rights for the film.

    3. Shia Labeouf almost starred as Jack.

Harry Styles was initially meant to play Jack, but due to conflicts with his touring schedule, the role almost landed on Shia Labeouf of Transformers fame. But in an interview with Variety, Wilde said she let go of Labeouf because his process “seems to require a combative energy, and I don’t personally believe that is conducive to the best performances.”

Meanwhile, Labeouf denied this in an email to Variety, saying the reason was the lack of rehearsal time. In the end, Styles was cast again to play the lead role opposite Pugh.

    4. Florence Pugh on her sex scenes with Harry Styles in the trailer.

In the same interview, director Wilde had been vocal about the importance of depicting female pleasure in sex scenes between a heterosexual couple, because “in hetero sex scenes in film, the focus on men as the recipients of pleasure is almost ubiquitous.”

But with the crowd’s attention being directed to the sex scenes between Pugh and Styles when the trailer dropped, Pugh has this to say in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar: “When it’s reduced to your sex scenes, or to watch the most famous man in the world go down on someone, it’s not why we do it. It’s not why I’m in this industry. Obviously, the nature of hiring the most famous pop star in the world, you’re going to have conversations like that. That’s just not what I’m going to be discussing because [this movie is] bigger and better than that. And the people who made it are bigger and better than that.”

    5. Harry Styles created Alice’s “trigger song” in just 5 minutes.

In the same interview between Variety and director Wilde, the latter revealed that the seemingly romantic yet creepy song featured in the film was written by Harry Styles. In the script, it was only referred to as Alice’s “trigger song” and when the singer and actor asked about it, Wilde revealed to him that there was no specific song yet. Styles then offered to pen it himself.

“Five minutes later, he sent me a demo from his piano, and it was what ended up in the film. He called me and said, ‘What about this?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s it. That’s it. And that’s really insane that you did that in five minutes’,” said Wilde.
