If the pandemic has taught the world a lesson or two, it is the importance of cherishing the gift of good health, and enjoying life unrestricted. It has put things into perspective, and the fear of getting ill is even more realized. Indeed, the reality of COVID-19 terrified the world, but there are those who have lived a reality like this much longer– cancer warriors and survivors.
Lymphoma is a cancer that starts in the immune system’s infection-fighting cells called lymphocytes. The lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and other areas of the body contain these cells, and Lymphoma leads lymphocytes to change and increase out of control. Common symptoms include enlarged lymph nodes, chills, weight loss, fatigue– all of which are more likely to be caused by other conditions, such as an infection, which is why getting checked by a doctor is important for proper diagnosis.
It is one of the top 15 cancers in the Philippines, affecting around 11,000 Filipinos every year. Yet with lack of awareness, authorities estimate a larger number of patients that are left undiagnosed.
“Lymphoma exists”, Jeanne, a Lymphoma cancer survivor, stresses, “For someone who was diagnosed with Lymphoma and know nothing about the disease…if people knew more about this cancer that can actually affect even the younger ones, maybe we could have been more aware of our health (and) the symptoms that Lymphoma can do to our body.”
Such is the mission of Lymphoma Philippines, a non-profit organization for Lymphoma patients, survivors, and caregivers aiming to spread awareness on medically-approved Lymphoma-related campaigns in the country. The lack of information is what inspired cancer survivor Jheric Delos Angeles and his wife Anna Tapel-Delos Angeles to create a community of Filipino patients and their family members in order to educate more people and provide much needed support to those in need, including fighting for better healthcare.
Rhiz, a Lymphoma cancer patient, shares her experience living with the disease amidst the pandemic, “It’s very hard. The agony is double. During the pandemic, going to the hospital was difficult and scary for cancer patients like me. As it is, we cannot afford to get COVID.”
Christine, a Lymphoma patient caregiver, echoes Rhiz’s sentiments regarding hospital visits. On top of that, their income was cut off for a time during the lockdown and they had to rely on their savings to continue medication.
While Lymphoma is considered to be a curable cancer if diagnosed early, access to treatment is a challenge as costs related to the disease can range from one million pesos to three and a half million pesos depending on the hospital and treatment protocol.
Recognizing these challenges, Lymphoma Philippines hopes to continue spreading information and possibly save lives. As part of its efforts, the organization along with The Carewell Community Foundation, EPCALM, KAYA, and The Philippine Cancer Society, also in partnership with Takeda Healthcare Philippines, held a public online event to mark the World Lymphoma Awareness Day, and shared practical information beneficial to Filipino Lymphoma patients and their families. This includes:
● Mental wellness advice for patients and their loved ones
● A private Facebook group for patients and their loved ones where they can get information and support from each other
● Patient navigation that helps patients in their journey from diagnosis to post-treatment and connects them with the right agencies and groups
● Emotional support groups in partnership with Kanser sa Adolescents and Young Adults (KAYA) and The Carewell Community Foundation
● Social work services that can assist patients in their journey
“It is an unimaginably difficult journey for patients and their loved ones living with cancer. Having gone through it myself, a strong support system is crucial in the journey and we at Lymphoma Philippines are committed to lending help however possible,” says Lymphoma Philippines co-founder Jheric Delos Angeles.

“I felt The Woman King was an important story because I saw myself in it,” says Viola Davis, the Oscar®-winning actress and producer of the film inspired by the historical all-female unit of warriors who protected the Kingdom of Dahomey from the late 1600s until the late 1800s.
“I saw my femininity in it. I saw my blackness in it. I saw a really important part of history in it,” adds the actress. “I always say any part of history is important, even the small parts. And I think that it is a story that the world is hungry for.”

The Agojie warriors lived to serve, defend, and protect the Dahomey kingdom and its king. The Dahomey Kingdom was one of the wealthiest at the time, and its defenders, the Agojie, were the most feared warriors in West Africa, in the territory we now recognize as modern-day Benin.
The Dahomey culture, which significantly valued women, enjoyed a unique and incredibly progressive social structure for the time, with all official roles balanced by both a male and female leader. This system of gender parity included all of the kingdom’s most important positions—from military generals to financial advisors and religious leaders—and reached all the way to the highest ranks where the king would bestow the title of Kpojito—or Woman King—upon a female reign mate.

Davis says that the story of the Agojie warriors spoke to her because it reflected her own journey of pride and self-acceptance, like that which many women experience. “I spent four years at a training school where I felt like I had to cover up who I was in order to be a great actress. I had to really fool you into believing that I wasn’t Black with my body, with my voice; that I had to be sort of a prototype of what we deem as feminine,” Davis explains. “The Woman King breaks all the rules. In the hearts and minds of every woman out there, they wish for that. They hope for that. They hope for a space where they can just sort of bust out of all those confines and say, ‘Here I am and I like it,’ where they can be in the arena of belonging.”
Davis adds that preparing and training for the role and creating the character of the warrior general Nanisca put into focus all of the messages about her body she had received over the years. “All the things that I was taught when I was a girl wanting to win the Miss Central Falls Recreation contests, wanting to look good in a bikini, wanting to be thin and cute, delicate, and pretty, while I was always really muscular and thicker,” she says. “I was always feeling like my femininity could not be created with this canvas. Then, all of a sudden, with this role, my muscles, my arms, my thick legs, my heavy voice were perfect. When I walked on the set as Nanisca, I felt unapologetic about it. I celebrate it physically, in every way.”

Gateway Gallery, the art museum of Araneta City, is currently hosting the stirring art of Punjabi Artist Jaspreet Kaur in an exhibition called Extinction, which opened last September 10.
The exhibition features incredibly life-like paintings of different endangered species such as birds of prey and big cats such as lions and tigers, and was formally opened by various artists such as Fernando Sena, Pol Mesina, Romeo Gutierrez, and Kannan Chockalingam, the First Secretary to the Ambassador of India.
“I chose this theme for my exhibit because of forest degradation and because endangered species are at risk of going extinct in a matter of years. I know that I could not stop it, but I can paint them alive on my canvas, especially tigers and other big wild cats,” Kaur said.
Extinction is Kaur’s third solo show and is a potent display of the artist’s strong conviction towards the protection of wildlife and the preservation of forest habitats. “Humans are killing amazing endangered species to get their fur and destroying their habitat by fires or illegal logging. We need to stop all this madness.”
Kaur is a celebrated artist both in the Philippines and in India. Her art, mainly done through various media such as oil, pastel, acrylic, and charcoal, has been exhibited in various locations in the Philippines and in Punjab.
Extinction is in the Small Room of the Gateway Gallery and will be shown until September 24. Gateway Gallery is the art museum of Araneta City. It is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. It is located at the 5F of Gateway Tower, Araneta City, Quezon City. Admission to the museum is free. To know more about the exhibit and other museum programs, please call +632-8588-4000 local 8300, or email gatewaygallery@aranetagroup.com.
