  • Meet Skeletor and His Ruthless Allies in New “Masters of the Universe” Featurette

Meet Skeletor and His Ruthless Allies in New “Masters of the Universe” Featurette

Eternia has fallen under the grip of Skeletor’s dark reign in Masters of the Universe, and the fate of the kingdom now rests in the hands of He-Man. Returning from his exile on Earth, Adam must embrace his destiny once more and lead the fight against the forces threatening his home. While heroes rally behind him, Skeletor commands a fearsome army of villains determined to keep Eternia under their control.

The newly released “Forces of Evil” featurette shines a spotlight on the skull-faced tyrant and the dangerous allies who stand at his side.

Watch the “Forces of Evil” Featurette:

    Skeletor’s Relentless Pursuit of Power

At the center of Eternia’s darkness is Skeletor, voiced by Academy Award-winning actor Jared Leto. According to producer Jason Blumenthal, the villain’s hunger for power stems from something much deeper.

“Skeletor, on his surface, seems like he just wants power and he’s willing to do whatever it takes, but it’s what’s lacking in him that makes him want that power,” says producer Jason Blumenthal. “And what’s lacking in him is what’s inside of Adam. I’d call it a moral compass. You either have one or you don’t. And if you don’t, you are evil.”

    MOTU Skeletor
Jared Leto stars as Skeletor in Masters of the Universe

A longtime fan of He-Man, Leto brings both familiarity and fresh energy to the iconic character. His performance balances menace with unexpected humor, creating a memorable interpretation of the classic villain.

“We were shooting a scene and I was laughing so hard that he brought me to tears,” director Travis Knight says of Leto. “He will make these choices that you don’t see coming and that really does help to make Skeletor distinctive. He’s just an extraordinarily memorable villain.”

Evil-Lyn Brings Magic, Ambition, and Chaos

Standing closest to Skeletor is Evil-Lyn, portrayed by Alison Brie. As a powerful enchantress and trusted lieutenant, she plays a crucial role in advancing Skeletor’s plans. Yet beneath her loyalty lies a thirst for power of her own.

Brie was drawn to the film’s ability to balance action, humor, and self-awareness.

    MOTU EvilLyn
Alison Brie plays Evil-Lyn in Masters of the Universe

“I think the most exciting thing to me about this iteration of He-Man is the sense of humor,” Brie says. “Skeletor and Evil-Lyn had a really funny rapport in the original series. Some of the iterations since then have been more serious, and I like that this movie has a meta quality. It’s able to laugh at itself, but also deliver for the fans and take itself seriously when it needs to.”

The complicated dynamic between Evil-Lyn and Skeletor remains one of the story’s most intriguing elements.

“She vacillates between sort of loving Skeletor, and idolizing him, and being very excited for him to get the power, but secretly she wants to have all the power,” Brie says. “She knows how to press his buttons, but she’s also there to build him up. She notoriously has no loyalty to Skeletor. She likes to pretend that she does, but we all know the power dynamic between Evil-Lyn and Skeletor is super volatile.”

Trap Jaw Joins the Villainous Army

Another formidable member of Skeletor’s ranks is Trap Jaw, the fearsome cyborg warrior brought to life by Sam C. Wilson. With extensive prosthetics and an intimidating appearance, the character presents a unique challenge for the actor.

    MOTU TrapJaw
Sam C. Wilson plays Trap Jaw in Masters of the Universe

The way that I play him, he’s a really gruesome kind of guy,” Wilson says. “His jaw hurts his head, so he’s got a headache and none of it is very comfortable. With the amazing work that the prosthetics team has done, I can make this guy feel eerie and strange.”

The result is a villain who looks as unsettling as he is dangerous.

    Goat Man Charges Into Battle

Adding even more muscle to Skeletor’s army is Goat Man, portrayed by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, the 2018 World’s Strongest Man. The towering strongman, known worldwide for his imposing presence, credits He-Man as one of his early inspirations.

Playing the horned and demonic warrior was a full-circle moment for Björnsson.

“All of us were at some point influenced by these characters, which were so popular back in the day,” Björnsson says. “I grew up with the generation that had He-Man, and being able to be a part of this was just an honor for me.”

The Battle for Eternia Begins June 3

With Skeletor’s forces stronger than ever, He-Man and his allies face their greatest challenge yet. Packed with action, humor, and beloved characters from the iconic franchise, Masters of the Universe promises an epic showdown between good and evil.

Masters of the Universe opens in Philippine cinemas on June 3. Distributed locally by Columbia Pictures PH.

The Core Four Are Back in Action in New ‘Scary Movie’ Parody Posters

    Rated E for Everybody

The countdown has officially begun for the return of one of comedy’s most iconic franchises. With only two weeks left before Scary Movie opens in Philippine cinemas on June 10, Paramount Pictures has released a new set of parody posters that tease the outrageous humor fans have come to expect from the series.

Known for poking fun at the biggest horror movies and pop culture moments of its time, Scary Movie is back with a fresh target list. This time, nothing is off-limits.

The Gang Reunites for More Chaos

Making their long-awaited return are franchise favorites Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall, affectionately known by fans as the Core Four. Their reunion marks a major moment for the series, bringing together the characters who helped turn Scary Movie into a global comedy phenomenon.

Joining them are familiar faces and newcomers, including Kenan Thompson, Damon Wayans Jr., Sydney Park, and more.

Packed with the franchise’s trademark mix of absurd comedy and sharp satire, the latest installment takes aim at everything from reboots and remakes to sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror films, and the seemingly endless wave of “final chapters” that rarely stay final.

    Watch the Trailer

    No Horror Franchise Is Safe

For more than two decades, Scary Movie has built its reputation on turning popular horror films upside down. The upcoming film continues that tradition with a playful look at modern horror trends and cinematic universes.

Fans can expect plenty of callbacks, unexpected twists, and the over-the-top comedy that made the original films instant favorites.

As the newly released posters suggest, the filmmakers are casting a wide net. Every familiar horror trope is fair game, and every genre convention is ready to be hilariously dismantled.

    Official Synopsis

Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer (“Ghostface”), the Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs and no horror movie IP is safe.

Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite in Scary Movie alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word “legacy” in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final.

Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.

  • PRIME VIDEO STREAMING REVIEW: ‘Spider-Noir’ with Nicolas Cage Marries Two Polar Opposite Genres and Comes Out with Something New and Exciting

PRIME VIDEO STREAMING REVIEW: ‘Spider-Noir’ with Nicolas Cage Marries Two Polar Opposite Genres and Comes Out with Something New and Exciting

A spin-off series from the massively successful Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Noir character is actually quite an inventive and refreshing move from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. By turning it into a live-action series set in an alternate universe of 1930s Depression-era New York, showrunner Oren Uziel manages to juggle the tonal issues of presenting a superhero show in the noir genre – or is it a noir show with superhuman characters? Finding the productive tension between these two storytelling modes creates an entertaining spectacle, with Nicolas Cage at the center grounding it altogether.

The show follows Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage) several years after his exploits as the superhero The Spider. Following tragic events involving the loss of someone very close to him, Reilly has given up his superhero activities and resumed his life as a struggling private detective. Without The Spider, New York is overrun by crime, with the mob boss Silvermane (Brendan Gleeson) at the top of the underworld food chain. However, a new case involving other individuals with superpowers leads Reilly right into Silvermane’s crosshairs. Over the first three episodes, the show pushes Reilly to question his decision and wonder whether he should take on the mantle of The Spider once again.

Consisting of eight episodes, I’ve only seen the first three, and most of these episodes are filled with intricate world-building. These early episodes allow us to get into the show’s tone and genre, smoothly easing us into its marriage of noir with that of the comic book superhero genre. Reilly is not alone in this world. He has a friend who knows about his dual life, the journalist Robbie Robertson (Lamorne Morris), and his a crafty, competent secretary Janet (Karen Rodriguez).

    Spider Noir 2026 05 19 at 6.27.17 PM Stills
    Prime Video’s Spider-Noir

The world, straight out of the noir genre, is a bleak, broken society hidden underneath the glitz and glamour of New York’s upper class, who make it the clientele of Reilly and the cause of all the misery. It’s underhanded and dirty, but only as much as it can be in a show that styles itself like an old Humphrey Bogart film and a family-friendly superhero adventure. The extraordinary comes in brief spurts but with huge impact across these first three episodes, showing great restraint and preventing one side from overpowering the other. Uziel is doing a great job of balancing Spider-Noir’s dual personalities without dismantling the show’s overall feel of it.

    Spider Noir 2026 05 19 at 6.27.57 PM Stills

The existential dread that is evident in many noir films is front and center here. Reilly is a man who has been beaten by life, and he is deeply in opposition of going head on back into the realm of the superhero. This dilemma feels so current and relatable, posing the question of whether it matters to be good in a world that is so infested by people breaking the law; especially when those people seem to be winning at life. The exhaustion and frustration hang heavy in the first three episodes – yet the show still manages to be light and entertaining – making the entire experience feel refreshing and new.

    Spider Noir 2026 05 19 at 6.27.34 PM Stills

And this is handled magnificently by Nicolas Cage, who seems to straddle the show’s multi-faceted personalities. He knows exactly how to embody this character and how to fit it into the new tonal frequency of the show. Everyone seems to take their cues from him, and the world just feels like it’s right. The other standout is Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy, a night club singer who has ties to Silvermane and becomes one of Ben Reilly’s clients when she asks him to find her missing bodyguard, a man who also has superpowers. Li and Cage’s characters are always engaged in a verbal joust, dropping sentences and phrases that mean multiple things but delivered in a way that echoes the films of the ’30s and ’40s. It’s snappy, loaded, and highly enjoyable to watch.

    Spider Noir 2026 05 19 at 6.28.21 PM Stills

Spider-Noir is truly different and refreshing, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out. The show is offered in two variants – “Authentic Black & White” and “True Hue,” (a colored version that is highly oversaturated to resemble a comic book from that era) – and the viewer can watch the series in either format. Personally, I prefer the black and white version, as it feels far more true to the classic traditions of the noir genre.

    My Rating: 4 Stars

    stars 4 0

Ready to step into the shadows of 1930s New York? Spider-Noir proves that there is still plenty of invention left in the superhero genre when placed in the right hands, reminding us that sometimes, with no power comes no responsibility. Catch the premiere on May 27 on Prime Video in True-Hue Full Color and Authentic Black & White. See Nicolas Cage at his absolute best!

  • TV REVIEW: The Pilot Episode of ‘Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence’ Sets Itself Up as Prestige Television and It’s Looking for a Home

TV REVIEW: The Pilot Episode of ‘Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence’ Sets Itself Up as Prestige Television and It’s Looking for a Home

Director Shugo Praico’s direction for his new 6-part television series, Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence, from the pilot episode that was shown to select audiences a few weeks ago, boasts of a cinematic framing for a very human story set on the backdrop of the country’s alleged war on drugs. Using a multitude of characters, the show deconstructs the individual lives whose worlds are turned upside down the moment the police were incentivized to bring in drug users and pushers depicted in the series. While this story has been done before in various iterations, Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence has the benefit of time – the story is being told with a present-day lens – and all that we know now filters out the propaganda while focusing on its thematic intent to humanize its perpetrators and its victims.

The pilot episode is told in two parts: that of Kiko (Harvey Bautista), a working student who takes drugs to juggle the demands of his studies and earning a living, and that of Father Tom (Ian Veneracion), a priest who runs a rehabilitation program on an island far from the city. Both of their lives are torn asunder following a shift in the administration and the launch of a nationwide anti-drug campaign. The series depicts this transition as one that sends the cops running to apprehend drug pushers and users, with the narrative showing them oftentimes bringing in innocents just to meet their quota.

    Drug War 2 2.253.1 Stills

At the show’s opening, Kiko’s father is killed, prompting Kiko to go on the run and find himself at Father Tom’s rehabilitation program. On that island, the kids find redemption and peace; the storyline makes a great case that rehabilitation actually works, serving as a fantastic contrast to the show’s portrayal of unnecessary violence. Kiko, inspired by Father Tom, leaves for Manila to continue the priest’s work but goes missing. With the administrative shuffle of police chiefs, the new police chief begins to interfere with Father Tom’s program, and the priest takes it upon himself to go to Manila to find out what happened to Kiko.

    Drug War EP 1 2 2.285.1 Stills

Veneracion and Bautista are excellent foils for this story to unfold. Both are incredible actors, imbuing their roles with so much texture and nuance that they hit the characters’ realities as well as the show’s thematic messages without losing believability. But the rest of the cast is just as impressive.

    Drug War EP 1 2 2.282.1 Stills

Romnick Sarmenta plays Kiko’s dad, whose death serves as the inciting incident in Kiko’s story. Sarmenta is a solid, reliable actor, and is always good in everything. With his character’s early passing and the protagonist shift from Bautista to Veneracion halfway through the show’s pilot, Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence feels unpredictable and refreshing.

    Drug War EP 1 2 1.1.1 Stills

The pilot ends with a teaser for the next episode featuring Jane Oineza as a policewoman who seems dedicated to the operation and may take center stage. Will each of the six episodes introduce new players into the show’s depiction of this tragic turn of our nation’s history? It’s an exciting proposal that will pay off well if the succeeding episodes keep up the energy and pace of the pilot.

    Drug War EP 1 2 2.459.1 Stills

Praico makes this show feel big. He uses an interplay of wide shots to highlight the milieu of this narrative’s world but also knows that in television, the close-up is key. He shifts his camera lens with precision that makes Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence feel cinematic and grand, while still fully utilizing television’s natural intimacy with its characters. One scene features Bautista running away from the police, moving through the shanties of his turf, up onto the stainless-steel roofs of the slums, and down into another home. It is a massive sequence, impressively shot and edited that lets the audience know they are watching something on a completely different level. The writing is crisp and doesn’t feel like it is spoon-feeding its viewers, which elevates it further.

    poster drugwar official

Currently, Drug War: A Conspiracy of Silence is searching for a platform to call home. I hope it ends up on a streaming site that will allow the creators to retain the violence, brutality, gore, and profanity contained in the pilot episode. It is a very real, grounded work that needs that level of violence to heighten the horrors of that period. In this show, no one is purely good or bad, which is one of the things I like about it. Even Father Tom shares his moment of frailty that led him down this path; no one here is entirely innocent, and that feels exactly right for this show.

The Script Announce ‘Man in The Arena Tour’ Manila on 18th March 2027

With over 14 billion streams, 5 million album sales, six UK #1 albums and countless international Platinum certifications led by two US Platinum singles and two US Top 10 albums, the multi-awarded and platinum-selling Irish band, THE SCRIPT are coming back to MANILA and bringing their ‘MAN IN THE ARENA TOUR’ on 18 March 2027 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Presented by Wilbros Live with Midas Promotions. Tickets go on-sale on Friday, May 29, 9:30AM via SMTickets.com and SM Tickets outlets nationwide.

    The Script D1

Today, The Script enter a new era by sharing their new single ‘Man In The Arena’ – the first taste of their new album ‘The User’s Guide To Being Human’ which follows on 14th August 2026. The Script will follow the album with a huge UK and Ireland arena tour which starts in October, with further global touring also confirmed – adding to the 4.5 million tickets they have sold in their career. Listen HERE.

‘The User’s Guide To Being Human’ follows 2024’s ‘Satellites’. It was a record that saw vocalist Danny O’Donoghue attempt to process the grief that followed the tragic passing of his bandmate and friend Mark Sheehan in 2023. The record was followed by a global arena tour in which every show paid tribute to Mark.

After the tour ended, Danny found himself energised and inspired. Within a week of finishing, he was writing and recording new material with Andrew Frampton, Steve Kipner and Jimbo Barry, who between them had previously contributed to many of The Script’s huge hits, including ‘Hall Of Fame’, ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ and ‘Breakeven’.

Recorded in Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles, the result is an album in which Danny has established a powerful sense of purpose and direction for the next stage of the band, full of the real, emotional, soul-deep connection that their fans have come to love.

Danny says, “The title is what this album is about. If you need something to remind you of the spectrum of feelings and emotions that make you feel human, this is it.”

The skyscraping ambition of ‘Man In The Arena’ lives up to its title, with a hard-hitting R&B groove suddenly bursting into a classic Script mega-chorus built for the biggest of stages: a rousing Danny O’Donoghue delivers a typically charismatic vocal, with lyrics that affirm that the person who dares to put themselves in the spotlight is infinitely braver than anyone who criticises from the sidelines. Its lyrics are taken, in part, from a famous speech by American President Theodore Roosevelt.

Danny explains, “He talks about how honours don’t belong to the critics. They don’t belong to the people sitting on the couch, laughing at the person in the ring stumbling and falling around. The honours belong to the one who gets in there and whose face is marred with dust and blood. I remember reading it and being like: that needs to be in a tune, the energy in it is beautiful.”

‘The User’s Guide To Being Human’ is now available to pre-order / pre-save HERE. It will be available on CD and limited transparent vinyl with the artist store also stocking exclusive merch bundles, extremely limited test pressing vinyls and a cassette. Follow Wilbros Live (@WilbrosLive) on social media for more updates.

  • THEATER REVIEW: Dance Theater Takes a Big Leap Forward with Mari Dance’s Restaging of ‘A Dance in a Day in a Dance’

THEATER REVIEW: Dance Theater Takes a Big Leap Forward with Mari Dance’s Restaging of ‘A Dance in a Day in a Dance’

I’m a huge fan of contemporary dance. I love how expressive and emotional the movements are; it takes a lot of skill to make these seemingly random motions of the body look beautiful, but it always requires a level of storytelling and performance. Having not seen a contemporary dance ballet in a while, I’m thrilled that Mari Dance is bringing it back in a big way by pushing the medium forward and bringing it into the realm of theater. In dance theater, the narrative structure of a play is at work, but the story is communicated entirely through movement. It replaces spoken language with kinetic energy, requiring the audience to let go of the need for words to communicate and instead trust their eyes and ears to pick up the feelings of the story through the performance.

    MARI DANCE POSTER

Composed of five short, choreographed pieces by JM Cabling, A Dance in a Day in a Dance tracks the harrowing story of a rigid, abusive dance instructor and choreographer. Played by the terrific Al Bernard Garcia, as he uses capital punishment in the dance studio and terrorizes his students. This framing narrative serves as the transition points that link the five choreographed pieces together.

It begins with Nothing Special, a piece about finding one’s voice amid a culture of silence, performed by featured dancer Michael Que, which mirrors the students trying to process the dance instructor’s abusive ways.

At the midpoint, the company delivers a stunning performance of Ang Lihim ni Lea, an adaptation of Augie Rivera’s children’s book about a young girl who discovers she can walk through walls but the origins of this ability comes from a scary, dark place.

A Dance in a Day in a Dance

Performed by Janine Arisola-Cabrera as Lea, this powerful piece features where the dancer actually goes through the walls of her home, which is realised by a frame wrapped in fabric with holes cut through them.

The show then transitions to Bent, excellently executed by Arnel Sablas and Sheanne Montecarlos, about an accidental hook up between two dancers. It finishes with Nothing Special, performed by Garcia and Jenris Bernard Garcia, about a man rediscovering and reconciling with his younger self. It is the piece that leads to the transformation of Garcia’s problematic dance instructor that allows him to seek redemption withhis students.

Under Mikko Angeles’s astute direction and JM Cabling’s inventive choreography, the production transitions seamlessly between the world of the narrative to the world of the individual pieces, ensuring the emotional connection is carried through.

D Cortezano’s lighting design is exquisite, dynamically shifting colour temperatures and brightness to highlight the emotional spectrum of each scene. In one particular sequence, Cortezano manages to keep Garcia in the spotlight as he dances throughout the entire stage, while the rest of the company of dancers shifts rhythmically in darkness behind him. It had such a powerful effect.

ADIAD 26 Photo by Cesar Morales20

Complementing this is Wika Nadera’s set design involves panels on wheels so they can be dragged around, with one side made to look like doors and the other to look like artsy walls. The dancers would move them around to change the scene, using whichever side is best for the story at that moment.

The emotional ride of the entire production is matched by its production savvy and elevated by a host of incredible dancers. Led by Al Bernard Garcia, the ensemble and featured dancers are so strong. Their lines were beautiful. Their technique showed but each one was able to convey the story so well.

For me, the night’s true standouts, aside from Garcia who really anchored the whole production, were Arisola-Cabrera, whose portrayal of Lea is intricate and nuanced, and Montecarlos, whose performance in ‘Bent’ really showcased her talent and training and she brought in a lot of charm.

Among the ensemble, Evan Joe Asuela stood out for his grace and strength. He was just part of the ensemble, but his stage presence was so strong that I couldn’t stop watching him dance during the big numbers.

If you’re looking to get into watching ballet or contemporary dance, Mari Dance’s A Dance in a Day in a Dance is a wonderful starter show and its theatrical structure keeps it familiar.

‘Passenger’ Movie Turns Every Road Trip Into a Nightmare, Opens in Cinemas May 27

What If Every Highway Was Haunted?

Road trip horror stories have long been part of folklore around the world. From ghostly hitchhikers to cursed stretches of highway, the open road has always carried a sense of mystery. But the creators of Passenger wanted to take that fear to an entirely new level.

Writers Zachary Donohue (The Den) and T.W. Burgess (Early Haunts, Malevolents) imagined a terrifying reality where no road is safe.

“Usually these haunted road stories are about someone who died on that road and is now haunting it – about a specific haunted road,” shares Donohue. “We wanted to make it broader, something scarier, and just demonic. Where every road is haunted, and they’ve always been haunted.”

For Burgess, the goal was to move beyond familiar ghost stories.

“We wanted to do something totally different. It’s not just a ghost of a road, but something more malevolent and more all-encompassing.”

Their approach led them to examine everyday driving experiences, from getting lost and losing track of time to dealing with unexpected vehicle trouble, and imagine how those situations could become sources of fear.

A Road Trip Turns Into a Living Nightmare

In Passenger, a young couple’s van-life adventure takes a horrifying turn after they witness a gruesome accident on the highway.

Soon, they realize they have unknowingly brought something home from the crash site.

A sinister demonic force known as The Passenger begins stalking them, refusing to let go until it claims them both. As the entity tightens its grip, the couple must confront a terrifying evil that seems impossible to escape.

The film stars Lou Llobell (Foundation), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life, Bad Boys: Ride or Die), and Academy Award winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter).

    Horror Hidden in Everyday Moments

One of the film’s most unsettling ideas is its ability to transform ordinary road trip experiences into terrifying encounters.

Producer Walter Hamada, known for blockbuster horror hits such as The Conjuring and It, praised the screenplay’s inventive approach.

“They did a great job picking out the kinds of iconic road trip moments, things you take for granted – putting on a seat belt, rearview cameras, fixing a flat tire – and subverting them,” says Hamada.

“Basically, what we strove for was how to ruin a road trip for people everywhere. How do we make people think twice, if they’re going to go on a road trip?”

After watching Passenger, even the most routine drive may feel a little different.

A Haunted House That Never Stops Moving

Director André Øvredal was immediately drawn to the film’s unique concept and atmosphere.

“The horror and suspense scenes were very inspiring – the tension, the mood and the tone. The fact that we’re doing a haunted house with a moving home!” he laughs.

For Øvredal, the film’s central idea extends beyond supernatural scares.

“Just the idea of this highway myth, that can affect anybody who’s driving on highways, how it can infiltrate their lives – and become not only an obstacle, but a symbol of the obstacles in their relationship, as well.”

The result is a horror story that blends frightening encounters with emotional tension, creating a more personal journey for its characters.

An Ancient Evil With a Dark Purpose

Unlike traditional horror villains, The Passenger does not simply hunt its victims.

According to Donohue, the entity prefers something far more disturbing.

“He doesn’t just come out and kill you. Part of his mythos is that he wants to torment you, to ride you the whole distance you can go, until you break down, literally.”

The demon manipulates, pressures, and terrorizes its targets, often driving them toward their own destruction.

That psychological approach helps make the threat feel relentless and deeply unsettling.

    The Meaning Behind the Mark

A crucial element of the story is the mysterious mark The Passenger leaves behind.

The creative team spent considerable time deciding what form this warning would take.

“We were always trying to figure out how that would look,” explains Donohue. “The Passenger will mark the car with something – but we didn’t know what that mark would look like. In an early version, it’s just a marking.  Then Walter [Hamada] was pushing us about, ‘Well, what is that marking?’ And then he just came up with the idea of three scratches.”

The answer eventually came in the form of three scratches.

Hamada explains that the symbol carries deeper meaning.

“So if you stumble upon these scratches on your vehicle, you’ve been marked by The Passenger. It’s demonic, like a signature.  The three slashes are sort of an affront to the Holy Trinity. It shows up in a lot of stories about exorcism and demonic.”

A Battle Beyond the Physical World

Another aspect that captivated Øvredal was the film’s spiritual dimension.

“It’s about two people just trying to fit together, in a way, and make life work for them together,” he says.

“But then to have this kind of religious battle going on between St. Christopher and this demonic entity, in over their heads, is like an eternal battle. It was a really intriguing aspect to the film that was always there, but that we leaned into, as we were developing it.”

That clash between faith and darkness adds another layer to the story, raising the stakes beyond simple survival.

Hit the Road If You Dare

Combining supernatural horror, psychological tension, and a fresh spin on road trip legends, Passenger transforms familiar highways into places of dread.

The next time you fasten your seatbelt, glance in the rearview mirror, or pull over to fix a flat tire, you might think twice.

Catch Passenger when it opens only in cinemas on May 27. Distributed locally by Paramount Pictures PH.
