MOVIE REVIEW: Lacking in Active Conflict, ‘First Light’ Is a Reflective Movie About a Crisis of Faith

Beautifully shot, director James J. Robinson’s debut feature film, First Light, is a slow-paced, meditative examination of corruption within idealized institutions. Collaborating with cinematographer Amy Dellar, Robinson presents a world that feels lost in time and space. The narrative unfolds in an unnamed village in the Philippines, near a decaying convent built during the Spanish occupation, a world seemingly unbothered by the modern intrusion of mobile phones or television. Its atmospheric opening, featuring the convent covered in darkness as nuns glide past with candles, initially made me believe that the film might be a period piece. It is toward the end of the first act, when a motorcycle appears on screen, that we realize we are actually grounded in the modern world.

First Light follows Sister Yolanda, played by Ruby Ruiz, whose faith is profoundly shaken following a tragic accident that results in the death of a young man. Driven by her moral compass to find some semblance of peace for the young man’s surviving family, she begins to unearth the complex power dynamics at play between a wealthy local clan, the government, and the church and how it ties to the suppression of the truth regarding the boy’s passing. Consequently, Sister Yolanda’s faith falters, igniting a journey to discovery begins.

First Light adopts a languid pace, slowly unfolding its world piece by piece with no rush or urgency. The film follows the daily life of Sister Yolanda, illustrating the extraordinary lengths she goes to for the parish, the people in it, her fellow sisters of the habit, and the church she so deeply believes in. Yet, while Dellar’s cinematography remains exquisite, the narrative pacing never truly picks up, even after the tragic death of the young man and her growing realisation about the world around her. This relentless slow-burn makes the film lack the energy it needs to fully delve into the raw emotion of Sister Yolanda’s own crisis of faith.

This slowness also takes the form through the line delivery, where characters take prolonged pauses between lines that has a tendency to kill the organic energy of a scene. This rhythmic hesitation makes the conversations sound noticeably scripted rather than natural, as if the actors are visibly waiting for a cue or a calculated emotional beat. Ultimately, a more naturalistic, free-flowing delivery of the dialogue would have greatly helped the film achieve the grounded mood.

At a certain point, things become a bit too easy; major discoveries are made with very little fanfare. Sister Yolanda’s own dealings, whether with the priest (Soliman Cruz), a fellow sister contemplating leaving the convent (Kare Adea), or Linda (Maricel Soriano), a wealthy matron whose mother is on life support and who Sister Yolanda visits to pray over, usually ends with a discussion but no real argument or debate. While the film constantly searches for an active conflict, it settles instead for a passive one: one of reflection.

    First Light

Thankfully, Ruiz is exceptional at conveying these abstract thoughts and complex emotions within such a dormant narrative. There’s a lot of nuanced work here that fills in the storytelling gaps, and manages to create a version of Sister Yolanda that is remains consistently fascinating to watch. It’s in the lens of the  mundane and the ordinary that we are watching all this unfold and Ruby Ruiz harnesses that effectively.

Ultimately, there are many interesting things that First Light does and tries to tackle. It juxtaposes images of our Spanish colonial history as an opposing, oppressive force over its less fortunate characters, creating links to the corruption upon many hallowed institutions, most especially the church. These are the interrogations I admire but I ultimately wish the film had approached this with a little bit more narrative energy.

    My Rating: 2.5 Stars

    stars 2 5

Keep an eye out for First Light on the film festival circuit or look out for its upcoming digital and streaming release. It is a slow-burn narrative worth tracking down just to witness Ruby Ruiz’s powerhouse, quietly powerful performance!

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Milly Alcock’s Portrayal of ‘Supergirl’ Makes the Movie

MOVIE REVIEW: Milly Alcock’s Portrayal of ‘Supergirl’ Makes the Movie

There is actually a lot of good things that’s going on for Supergirl. I love director Craig Gillespie’s work on I, Tonya and thought he had a really sharp eye here, capturing the deeper pathos of Supergirl. As a character study, I really enjoyed how the film positions Kara as an ultimately powerful superhero, but whose sense of loss is so catastrophic that she feels lost and without purpose. These are the elements that truly resonated with me. However, I felt that the story that surrounded this and the plot that allowed Supergirl’s story to unfold felt incongruent with her personal journey. There were many moments when I felt as though I was watching two completely different films and I was definitely liking one far more than the other.

Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Kal-El (Superman), was born eight years after the fall of Krypton. Her father, the engineer Zor-El, managed to protect a portion of the home planet within a protective force field as its core melted away.

However, as the remaining survivors of Argo, Krypton are slowly dying off and Zor-El’s only recourse to save his daughter was to send her to Earth to join Kal-El. Unlike Superman, Kara did not experience his idealistic and optimistic childhood; instead, she grew up witnessing the slow death and destruction of her entire race.

    Supergirl

Now turning 23, she copes by hopping between planets with her dog, Krypto, getting drunk and avoiding facing the truth about who she is and who she plans to be. Her celebration gets derailed when she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl whose parents were killed by the ruthless brigand leader Krem of the Yellow Hills. She is on a quest to find him to exact her revenge.

When Krem and his crew steal Kara’s shop and shoot Krypto with a fatal poison, the antidote to which only Krem possesses, Kara and Ruthye are forced to band together. For Kara, the stakes transform into a desperate mission to save Krypto, the last living connection to her lost home.

    Supergirl TRL 101

As Kara, Milly Alcock is a wonderful personification of Supergirl’s intense emotional turmoil. She layers her performance with the knowledge that she’s extremely powerful, unapologetic about it, but also uncaring about it. Alcock fully embodies Kara’s deep sense of displacement and purposelessness. There’s a tired way by how she goes about things. She’s dazzling to watch because you know underneath all the walls she has put up is a powerhouse that flattens mountains with a punch or a blast from her eye beams. But her heart isn’t in it. It is such an arresting performance that I could easily watch it all day.

What I did not appreciate, however, was how the plot utilizes this young girl’s quest for vengeance tagging along to somehow mirror or parallel Kara’s own emotional journey. I get it, both characters have suffered greatly and it is through each other that they will find some sort of insight about how to push forward. There is something touching about Ruthye (Eve Ridley), a seemingly hapless child carrying her father’s sword seeking revenge. Yet, her tragic backstory is granted a four-minute prologue, the slaughter of her family ultimately feels more like a convenient plot device than a character-driven storyline. We don’t even get to see the weapons her father died protecting. Instead, Rutheye spends most of the movie wanting revenge and getting into trouble, only to be constantly saved by the more powerful Supergirl, leaving no real room for to see her grow. If she’s mirroring or her journey is to parallel that of Kara-El’s, it doesn’t quite help us gain any new insight into Kara’s deep-seated depression.

    Supergirl
Supergirl | Photo Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures

There is even a subplot of how the brigands are capturing women as brides because they are an all-male species. This add no real bearing to Kara’s personal journey, or Ruthye’s, for that matter, but its includion feels like a forced, surface-level attempt to show how feminist the film’s story is. You can remove that storyline and the movie would remain still strong and feminist, in just how much more of a burden Kara carries over her more idealistic cousin (still played wonderfully by David Corenswet). Same abilities, same trauma, but different approach; different realities.

Utilmately, the film offers fantastic moments of cinema. This is especially true during the breathtaking sequences in outer space where Supergirl absorbs the energy of the yellow sun and comes into her own, alongside some great, complex fight scenes that allow us to see the full extent of who she is as a superhero and as a character. We get to witness her when at her most vulnerable, completely depowered under the dim light of a red sun, and at her most formidable, super-charged under the radiant rays of the yellow sun. Through it all, she is remains fearless and persistent. What Superman possesses in heart, Supergirl matches in sheer grit.

Jason Momoa as Lobo in Supergirl
Supergirl | Photo Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures

There is undoubtedly a lot of good materials in this film – some great set pieces, a quick pace, some really great character moments – but I wished the plot had dealt more directly with Kara and her personal emotional journey. I felt Ruthye was not compelling enough as a mirror and it gave no real insight to Kara’s own choices. Meanwhile, Jason Momoa’s appearance as Lobo is exactly how I imagined him to be. It is a highly predictable performance that has no real bearing in the movie other than to put another recognizable DC character into the mix. Ultimately, I really just wanted more of Supergirl herself and I didn’t get nearly enough.

  • “Flex X Cop” Season 2 Brings More Action, Chaos, and Crime-Solving Fun to Disney+ This August

“Flex X Cop” Season 2 Brings More Action, Chaos, and Crime-Solving Fun to Disney+ This August

Jin Isoo Is Back, and This Time He Means Business

The badge is official. The attitude? Still very much intact.

This summer, the hit Korean crime comedy Flex X Cop returns for an explosive second season, bringing back Jin Isoo and the violent crimes team for more high-stakes cases, outrageous clashes, and sharp comic tension. Flex X Cop Season 2 streams August 7 on Disney+, promising a fresh round of terrorists, assassins, impossible mysteries, and chaotic police work.

After a dramatic first season that followed Isoo’s transformation from spoiled conglomerate heir to surprisingly effective detective, the new season finds him stepping into the force with more discipline, more experience, and yes, still plenty of swagger.

From Spoiled Heir to Full-Fledged Police Officer

In Season 1, Jin Isoo proved that money, charm, and instinct could make an unlikely but powerful combination in solving crimes. Now, after surviving a gruelling stint at the police academy, Isoo returns not as an unofficial helper, but as a fully-fledged police officer.

Of course, becoming official does not mean things will suddenly become easy.

At the academy, Isoo’s unruly personality repeatedly clashed with his intense drill instructor, Joo Hye Ra. Strict, relentless, and absolutely not impressed by his privileged background, Hye Ra pushed Isoo to his limits. Unfortunately for Isoo, that chapter is not quite over.

When he returns to the violent crimes team, he discovers that Joo Hye Ra is now the team’s new leader. Even worse for him, the two are assigned as partners.

Cue the tension, the banter, and the kind of friction that makes every case a little more entertaining.

Ahn Bohyun and Jung Eunchae Lead the New Season

Ahn Bohyun, known for Itaewon Class and Yumi’s Cells, returns as Jin Isoo, the rich heir turned successful detective whose confidence often gets him into trouble before helping him out of it.

Joining him is Jung Eunchae, known for Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born and Pachinko, as Joo Hye Ra, the violent crimes team’s formidable new leader. With her no-nonsense approach and Isoo’s unpredictable methods, their partnership is set to become one of the season’s biggest sparks.

Behind the scenes, Kim Bada, who wrote Season 1, returns as writer, while Kim Jaehong, also from the first season, is back in the director’s chair. With the original creative team returning, fans can expect the same exciting mix of crime, comedy, character clashes, and stylish investigation work that made the first season a standout.

More Korean Crime Thrills Await on Disney+

Flex X Cop Season 2 is the latest Korean title heading to Disney+, joining a growing library of gripping crime, action, and thriller series.

Viewers can catch up on Flex X Cop Season 1 before the new season arrives, or explore other must-watch Korean titles on the platform, including Made In Korea, which follows a KCIA agent living a double life as an international smuggler; Vigilante, about a police academy student seeking revenge on criminals who escape justice; and The Worst of Evil, which follows an undercover police officer working to bring down an international drug operation.

Packed with personality, thrilling cases, and a partnership that is guaranteed to test everyone’s patience, Flex X Cop Season 2 is ready to bring more clever chaos to screens this August.

Stream Flex X Cop Season 2 from August 7 on Disney+.

Benilde Thesis Films Bring Laughs to Seattle’s Diwa at Pagdiriwang Festival

Benilde Shorts Take the Spotlight in Seattle

Two capstone film projects from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde recently brought laughter, heart, and proudly Filipino storytelling to Seattle, Washington through the Diwa at Pagdiriwang Festival.

PHILIP VS. THE SCHOOL director Terrence Santiago with cast
    Philip vs. The School

Screened last June 7 at the Seattle Center Armory Loft 2, the films were part of the festival’s “Sometimes You Just Gotta Laugh” block, a program that celebrated the lighter, messier, and more heartfelt side of independent cinema.

With teenage dreams on the line, both Benildean shorts offered a sharp and funny look at ambition, friendship, school pressure, and the wonderfully chaotic world of student filmmaking.

Student Elections Get Messy in “Philip vs. The School”

Produced under HIVE Films and directed by Terrence Santiago, the 20-minute thesis short “Philip vs. The School” turns the high-stakes drama of student council elections into a witty coming-of-age comedy.

    PHILIP VS. THE SCHOOL poster

The story follows Philip, an average student suddenly caught in a moral dilemma. Should he stay loyal to his best friend Lea, or reveal a scandalous secret that could ruin his rival Mark?

Funny, tense, and painfully familiar, the film captures how school politics can feel larger than life when friendships, reputations, and personal values collide.

Santiago developed the film under the supervision of Benilde Film faculty member and industry veteran Wanggo Gallaga, whose mentorship helped shape the short’s mix of humor, heart, and youthful urgency.

“Guys! Action!” Finds Comedy in Student Filmmaking

Meanwhile, “Guys! Action!” directed by Jem Catabijan and produced by Kuhang Kuting Productions, turns the camera toward the hilarious struggles of young filmmakers.

The meta-comedy follows a desperate high school multimedia club racing against time to win Best Short Film at the Cinemalaya Film Festival. The stakes are intense: if they fail, the school administration will dissolve their beloved club for good.

Packed with panic, passion, and the kind of creative chaos every media student knows too well, the short film delivers a playful yet sincere tribute to young artists determined to keep their dreams alive.

Catabijan created the film under the guidance of Benilde Film educator and advocacy filmmaker Seymour Sanchez, who helped develop the project’s energetic and student-centered vision.

“Philip vs. The School” has been officially selected for the Kuala Lumpur International Film Academy Awards in 2025, while “Guys! Action!” was previously selected for the San Diego Filipino Film Festival in 2024.

Together, the two works show how Benildean filmmakers continue to bring fresh, funny, and thoughtful stories to audiences beyond the Philippines.

Supported by 4Culture and powered by Shunpike, the community-centered festival showcased stories from the Philippine islands and the global Filipino diaspora.

Liwanag directed “Ambag” under the Alaminos City National High School Special Program in the Arts and later pursued college studies at the Benilde Film department, further strengthening the festival’s connection to emerging Filipino storytellers.

From high school elections to filmmaking dreams, Benilde’s thesis films proved that comedy can travel far, carrying with it a brilliant, joyful, and deeply human glimpse of Filipino youth culture.

A Giant Monster Has Taken Over Manila as “Minions & Monsters” Arrives in Philippine Cinemas

Something Monstrous Has Landed in Metro Manila

There is something strange, silly, and impossible to miss in the Ortigas skyline.

To celebrate the Philippine cinema release of “Minions & Monsters,” the Minions have seemingly brought one of their newest friends to Metro Manila. His name is Howard, and he is not exactly the subtle type.

Now sitting high above SM Megamall, Howard can be seen by people in nearby buildings, commuters passing through EDSA, and movie fans exploring the Ortigas area. Beside him is one unlucky Minion, caught in yet another bit of Minion-style trouble.

Big, bizarre, and wonderfully fun, the installation is set to stay on top of SM Megamall for the entire month of July, giving fans plenty of time to snap a photo before catching the movie in cinemas.

    Who Is Howard?

Howard is one of the new characters introduced in “Minions & Monsters.” With a look that resembles a curious mix of starfish and octopus, this unusual creature adds a fresh dose of monster madness to Illumination’s joyful animated universe.

In the film, the Minions discover Howard frozen. However, there is one major problem: warnings from people in the past clearly say that he, along with his friend Phillips, should not be released.

Of course, when the Minions are involved, even the clearest warning signs can lead to hilarious disaster.

Howard is voiced by comedian Bobby Moynihan, known for his run on “Saturday Night Live” and voice work in “Inside Out,” “We Bare Bears,” and “The Secret Life of Pets.”

Catch the Giant Howard Display at SM Megamall

Fans can spot Howard and the Minion installation on top of SM Megamall throughout July. Visible from different points around Ortigas and from passing vehicles along EDSA, the display offers a fun photo moment for families, commuters, and fans of the Minions franchise.

Whether you are heading to the mall, passing through the city, or planning a movie day, Howard’s Manila takeover is one cheerful sight worth looking up for.
