A Family’s Last Stand: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Alfie Williams Confront the Rage Virus in “28 Years Later”

The rage virus has never stopped. It’s evolved, devouring the world for nearly three decades since the outbreak in 28 Days Later. Now, visionary director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland return to the universe they helped define—this time, telling an emotionally raw, family-centered story in 28 Years Later, hitting Philippine cinemas on June 18.

    Ralph Jodie Alfie

Set in an unforgiving world teetering between survival and collapse, the film places the spotlight on one isolated family fighting to preserve their humanity—no matter how dark things get.

Meet the Survivors: Jamie, Isla, and Spike

At the heart of the story is Jamie (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a fiercely protective husband hardened by survival. His wife, Isla (Jodie Comer), faces a mysterious illness, intensifying the emotional weight of their battle. Together, they raise their son Spike (Alfie Williams), a resourceful young boy learning to navigate the infected wasteland under his father’s guidance.

“Alex came up with this idea centered around a family. It is inventive writing, in a way that was exciting for everyone involved and helped make us feel like we were making an original film, and not a sequel,” Boyle explains.

Watch the behind-the-scenes Imagine vignette here:

    An Apocalypse with Heart

While 28 Years Later is steeped in tension and horror, its emotional core lies in the deeply human relationships—especially between father and son. Taylor-Johnson describes Jamie as a man shaped by necessity, teaching Spike to survive while grappling with the cost of that hard-earned wisdom.

“You see the pressure that Jamie is putting on him to grow up a little bit quicker than he is supposed to,” Taylor-Johnson continues. “He’s trying to give Spike the tools he needs in this new world. Jamie wants Spike to have his independence. There is so much heart and soul between the father and the son.”

Comer echoes this sentiment, highlighting the profound bond between Spike and his ailing mother. “Spike and Isla provide a real thread of humanity and emotion, while coping and surviving in this incredibly dangerous situation,” says Jodie Comer.

    Aaron Alfie forest

    Real Connections Behind the Camera

The authenticity onscreen is fueled by genuine offscreen chemistry. Taylor-Johnson formed a mentor-like bond with young Alfie Williams, mirroring their characters’ relationship. Director Boyle recounts seeing Aaron coaching Alfie through scenes, from breathing exercises to emotional preparation.

“Aaron loved taking responsibility for Alfie, looking after a young lad who was experiencing it all for the first time,” Boyle says. “I’d often find Aaron teaching Alfie about breathing and making sure he was ready for a scene. The other beautiful thing is that we’d see Alfie begin to copy Aaron in his prep.”

Witness the Rage Return – June 18

Mark your calendars: 28 Years Later opens in Philippine cinemas on June 18, distributed by Columbia Pictures, the local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. This thrilling continuation of a genre-defining saga explores not just survival, but what it means to love, protect, and endure when the world ends.

Brace Yourself for Thai Horror: “Don’t Sleep” Haunts Ayala Malls Cinemas Exclusively Starting June 4

    Ready to Be Terrified?

Ayala Malls Cinemas is summoning another wave of terror to Philippine theaters—this time, through the supernatural Thai horror-thriller Don’t Sleep. From the creative minds behind Pee Nak and Oh My Ghost: The Finale, the film will haunt local screens starting June 4, exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas. The movie is rated R-16.

A Deadly Game Unleashes Ancient Spirits

In Don’t Sleep, a group of unsuspecting friends stumble upon a mystical version of a Ouija board—known as Pee Tuey Gaew—and awaken something they were never meant to contact. As terrifying spirits emerge from the shadows, the characters are forced into a nightmarish struggle to survive.

Set in modern-day Thailand, the film draws on ancient folklore and explores universal themes of guilt, grief, and redemption, all while keeping the horror deeply psychological and chillingly real.

    Watch the Trailer:

Director’s Vision: Fear in the Shadows

Director Krittanut Watcharanuntagul offers a masterclass in building dread. “We shot the film with low-key lighting to keep much of the danger hidden in the shadows, allowing the audience’s imagination to fill in the gaps,” says director Krittanut. “Each location is designed to feel claustrophobic, as though the walls are closing in on the characters. I wanted to create a sense of isolation and entrapment – whether the characters are in a cramped bar or navigating the ghostly spirit world, they can’t escape their fate.”

From claustrophobic locations to eerie dreamlike sequences, every frame is crafted to make viewers feel trapped—emotionally and physically—alongside the characters. With minimal CGI and a preference for practical effects and distorted lenses, the film keeps its ghosts disturbingly tangible.

A Thai Horror Tale with Universal Appeal

Don’t Sleep was co-written and co-directed by Sathanapong Limwongthong and Watcharanuntagul, whose passion for Thai folklore shaped the script. Drawing from local ghost stories and traditional spiritual beliefs, the duo have woven a tale that’s both uniquely Thai and globally terrifying.

Filmed entirely in Bangkok over 15 intense days, the movie captures the tension between old-world mysticism and urban modernity. The haunting score—a blend of traditional Thai instruments and jarring horror motifs—adds another layer of unsettling atmosphere.

  • The Rage Returns: Danny Boyle and Alex Garland Reignite the Virus in “28 Years Later,” In PH Cinemas June 18

The Rage Returns: Danny Boyle and Alex Garland Reignite the Virus in “28 Years Later,” In PH Cinemas June 18

A Gripping Return to a World in Ruin

Two decades since they first shocked audiences with 28 Days Later, legendary director Danny Boyle and acclaimed writer Alex Garland are back—and the infection has mutated. 28 Years Later, the chilling third installment of the groundbreaking trilogy, opens in Philippine cinemas this June 18.

    2 5

Starring a powerhouse cast led by Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train), Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and the iconic Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel), the film catapults us into a bleak yet hauntingly familiar future where survival is a psychological war—and the monsters may not all be infected.

Holy Island: A False Sense of Sanctuary

Partially set on Holy Island, a secluded area with a single tidal causeway, the story unfolds in a self-made safe zone—far from the infected mainland. But as always, appearances deceive. “The island and causeway felt like a great starting point for our story,” Boyle elaborates, “because the causeway can be defended when it’s exposed by the tide. A community could thrive. Instead of a post-apocalyptic state, it looks like a town from the turn of the twentieth century. But the mainland then becomes somewhere ‘over there,’ offering both promise and threat.”

    RalphFiennes 28Yrslater

This eerie isolation magnifies the tension, letting the story zoom in on character behavior, beliefs, and survival philosophies. “With this kind of film we can explore characters by deciding what rules they’re setting and following. It helps define how they think, what they prioritize, and who they are.”y everything about who they are,” Boyle adds.

    Watch the “Imagine” Vignette

Peek behind the scenes with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland:

    Humanity Under Siege, Again

For screenwriter Alex Garland, the type of society this infection brought forth feels like an accurate human reaction, mirroring the fact that the plague-ridden Britain is also isolated from the rest of the world. “We considered what the infection would look like,” he remembers. “What happens to the country being quarantined and essentially abandoned by the rest of the world?”

He draws from the real world to try and answer those questions. “There’s a kind of ruthless, pragmatic, dog-eat-dog dimension to the ways things play out when a nation collapses. Broadly speaking, people not affected by the collapse ignore it and just go about their lives,” he says.

    3 1

    A Perfect Time for Infection

For producer Andrew Macdonald, the timing of 28 Years Later couldn’t be more perfect.  “We wanted to make a film with a unique kind of epic scale. Using 28 Years Later to accomplish that has been very exciting. It felt like the perfect time for us to return to the infected,” he says.

With the rage virus still pulsing through this dystopian vision of the UK, audiences are in for a gripping, emotionally searing ride.

Meet the Team Behind the Punches: “Karate Kid: Legends” Hits PH Cinemas May 28

From the creators of a legacy that spans generations, Karate Kid: Legends brings a fresh chapter to the beloved martial arts saga. This time, it’s not just about kicks and katas—it’s about the people who shape a fighter’s journey.

    KKL BenWang fight

Li Fong’s Journey: From Beijing to the Big Apple

When teen martial artist Li Fong (Ben Wang) relocates from Beijing to bustling New York City with his mother, Dr. Fong (Ming-Na Wen), he quickly realizes that a change in scenery doesn’t mean a break from challenges. Faced with a fierce local karate champ, Li finds himself thrown into conflict—but also, into a destiny of epic proportions.

That’s where Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) come in—two legends, one united mission: to guide Li through a unique fusion of kung fu and karate.

    But legends don’t work alone.

    2 4

Mia Lipani: Pizza, Sass, and Heart

Enter Mia Lipani (Sadie Stanley), the street-smart, no-nonsense New Yorker who becomes the first to welcome Li with an unexpected act of kindness—one that sets the tone for an unforgettable friendship.

“The key to Mia as a character is she’s grown up in New York, but she’s grown up working in New York, in a pizza shop with her dad,” director Jonathan Entwistle says. “She’s not an uber hipster. She’s not super cool. And Sadie was the perfect person to encapsulate that. She has a little vulnerability and a lot of backbone—she’s a very, very strong person.”

Stanley herself describes – “Mia is a very sarcastic girl, very headstrong, and very funny,” says Stanley. “And when Li Fong and Mia first meet, he’s overwhelmed with this new reality, this new life. Mia kind of comes in and shows him that first bit of kindness, that support he needs.”ew world.”

    JoshuaJackson BenWang

Victor Lipani: The Fighter Turned Father Figure

Mia’s dad, Victor (Joshua Jackson), is more than a pizza shop owner—he’s a retired boxer with a heart for tough kids and a soft spot for fighters like Li.

“I grew up in a neighborhood where there were a lot of kids, a lot of parents, a lot of people who weren’t your blood relation,” he says. “It takes everybody to raise kids, right? So as a trusted older male, Victor is there for Ben, because he’s dealing with quite a lot of trauma.”

For many viewers, Victor’s fatherly role will strike a nostalgic chord, echoing the franchise’s timeless message: it takes a village to raise a hero.

    1 2

    Dr. Fong: A Mother’s Strength

Ming-Na Wen steps into the role of Li’s mother, bringing both gravitas and warmth. “To be part of the Karate Kid world, being an Asian American, it’s just different,” she says. “Even though Miyagi is Japanese and I’m Chinese, we have a shared Asian-American experience. It had such an impact on my life, when I was younger watching it.”

On set, her bond with Ben Wang felt natural. “I told Ben, ‘You’re the perfect son.’ He’s so courteous and soft spoken. And yet there’s like this little wicked sense of humor. I think that the fans are going to fall in love with him!”

    It’s Not Just a Fight—It’s a Family

Karate Kid: Legends isn’t just about training montages and showdowns (although yes, there are plenty). At its heart, it’s about the people who lift us up, push us forward, and catch us when we fall.

Whether it’s an uncle with ancient wisdom, a pizza-slinging best friend, or a mother holding the fort—Li Fong’s real strength comes from the team in his corner.

Don’t miss the next chapter of this iconic saga. Karate Kid: Legends opens in Philippine cinemas on May 28.

What starts with a cat turns into absolute chaos.

In Caught Stealing, Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky flips the script with a deliciously dark comedy crime thriller starring Austin Butler (Elvis), Zoë Kravitz (The Batman), Matt Smith (House of the Dragon), and Benito A. Martínez Ocasio—better known to fans as Bad Bunny.

    Austin Matt

The much-anticipated trailer just dropped, and it’s every bit as gritty, funny, and off-the-rails as you’d expect from Aronofsky.

About the Film: A Bartender, a Baseball Past, and a Whole Lot of Trouble

Meet Hank Thompson (Austin Butler)—a former high-school baseball star turned low-key New York bartender. Life’s not perfect, but it’s decent. He’s got a loving girlfriend (Zoë Kravitz), a stable job, and his favorite underdog team is making a rare pennant push.

Then his neighbor Russ (Matt Smith), a punk-rock mess, asks Hank to cat-sit. No big deal, right?.. Wrong.

    From Cat-Sitter to Crime Suspect

Within hours, Hank is caught in the crosshairs of an unpredictable crew of violent gangsters, all of whom are convinced he knows something. The catch? He doesn’t. Not even close.

But as the city closes in around him, Hank has to outwit—and outrun—every crooked character on his trail to figure out what’s really going on… before it’s too late.
