  • Ralph Fiennes Joins the Rage-Fueled World as Dr. Ian Kelson in “28 Years Later,” Opening June 18

Ralph Fiennes Joins the Rage-Fueled World as Dr. Ian Kelson in “28 Years Later,” Opening June 18

Ralph Fiennes is no stranger to commanding roles, but in 28 Years Later, the Oscar-nominated actor brings something hauntingly spiritual to the table. Opening in Philippine cinemas this June 18, this long-awaited follow-up to the post-apocalyptic 28 Days Later saga reintroduces a virus-ravaged world—and Fiennes is right at the heart of it.

    RalphFiennes 28Yrslater

    “Above All, He’s a Survivor”

Speaking about his new character, Fiennes says Dr. Ian Kelson is “above all, a survivor.” In the film, Kelson clings to a unique mantra—memento mori, or “remember death”—as a way of facing a brutal new reality. “He’s accepted the fact of death – that it’s so present,” Fiennes says. “Rather than run away from it, pretend death doesn’t exist, or live in fear of it, Kelson is honoring death and the dead. In a way, he’s a rather clergy-like figure and a humanist.”

It’s a perspective that’s both eerie and deeply human, perfectly in line with the franchise’s themes of survival, morality, and the thin line between hope and despair.

A Changed World 28 Years Later

Set nearly three decades after the original outbreak, 28 Years Later picks up in a UK left devastated by the rage virus. Most of the country has been laid to waste, but a group of survivors manages to carve out a fragile sanctuary on an isolated island. Their only protection? A causeway that floods for most of the day, keeping the infected at bay—but only just.

It’s in this desperate landscape that Dr. Kelson emerges—a mysterious figure whose appearance is as unforgettable as his ideology.

    Watch the Trailer Here:

The Striking Look of a Survivor

To fully inhabit Kelson, Fiennes worked hand-in-hand with production designer Carson McColl and costume designer Gareth Pugh to create a visually impactful first impression. “We had wonderful conversations about Kelson and his world and clothes,” Fiennes recounts. “One of Kelson’s defining traits is that he covers himself in iodine, which is a prophylactic against the rage virus. So, Kelson is covered in reddish-orange iodine, and then we made the decision to have his head shaven, which we thought was a strong look.”

The transformation didn’t stop there. Makeup supervisor Flora Moody helped bring the gritty reality of Kelson’s world to life. “Flora considered what do people look like if they no longer have access to shampoo and makeup,” Fiennes continues. “We all wanted the iodine-shielded figure to look arresting and startling,” Fiennes continues.

And it works—Dr. Kelson is as visually unforgettable as he is philosophically intriguing.

Don’t Miss the Return of the Rage Virus

Directed by Danny Boyle and featuring a cast that includes new and familiar faces – Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Alfie Williams and Jack O’Connell,. 28 Years Later promises intense thrills, emotional depth, and a chilling look at what it means to survive. Fans of the original film and newcomers alike won’t want to miss this terrifying new chapter.

    poster

Happening from June 25 to 27, 2025, at Gateway Cineplex 18 in Gateway Mall 2, Cubao, the festival is part of Quezon City’s official Pride Month celebration. With a handpicked lineup of powerful films from the Philippines and across the globe, RainbowQC invites moviegoers to experience the richness, complexity, and emotional depth of queer lives onscreen.

A Celebration of Identity, Love, and Community

    20679

Leading the RainbowQC program is a must-watch Southeast Asian premiere: The Wedding Banquet, directed by Andrew Ahn. This modern take on Ang Lee’s beloved classic reimagines the story through a contemporary lens, delving into themes of identity, family, and the evolving nature of relationships in today’s world. It’s bold, touching, and bound to spark conversation.

    20680

Local storytelling also takes a powerful spotlight with Some Nights I Feel Like Walking, marking its Philippine premiere. Directed by Petersen Vargas and starring a breakout ensemble including Jomari Angeles, Miguel Odron, and Gold Azeron, the film traces the journey of young hustlers who reunite to honor a friend’s final wish. It’s a deeply emotional portrait of chosen families, queer brotherhood, and the search for meaning amidst grief.

Both films are priced at ₱300 per ticket.

Global Queer Cinema at Your Fingertips

The festival also includes stunning international titles, made accessible to local audiences thanks to its cultural partners. These films include:

    20681

Cocoon (Kokon) by Leonie Krippendorff – a tender coming-of-age story set in Berlin that captures the nuances of first love and identity.

    20682

These screenings are available for just ₱150 each, with support from Goethe-Institut and the Embassy of Slovenia.

RainbowQC Shorts: A Must-See Free Program

One of the most anticipated parts of the festival? RainbowQC Shorts: The First Water is the Body, a free screening curated by Jason Tan Liwag. Inspired by Natalie Diaz’s 2020 poem, the collection features a deeply moving slate of short films by Filipino queer filmmakers, each weaving water and longing into their visual language.

Here’s what’s showing in the shorts lineup:

    20685

Abutan Man Tayo ng House Lights by Apa Agbayani – a dreamy sendoff to one last rave for a middle-aged gay man in a futuristic Manila.

    20686

A Catholic Schoolgirl by Myra Angeline Soriaso – a poignant look at a student’s hidden feelings for a nun in a strict religious setting.

    20687

The River That Never Ends by JT Trinidad – a haunting story of a trans woman navigating a decaying city as a companion-for-hire.

    20688

Microplastics by Lino Balmes – a quiet yet powerful portrait of a boy seeking connection in an increasingly artificial world.

    20689

Water Sports by Whammy Alcazaren – a post-apocalyptic queer love story starring the late Ricky Davao as two students navigate a climate-ravaged world through their bond.

These shorts are not just visually inventive—they’re emotionally resonant, providing snapshots of queer life across generations and identities.

    Tickets, Access, and More

Each screening is priced affordably to make the festival accessible to a wider audience. Whether you’re there to catch a Southeast Asian premiere or explore thought-provoking shorts, RainbowQC is designed to welcome everyone—from longtime cinephiles to first-time festival goers.

And yes, you can expect reimaginings of beloved numbers like “For Good” the one that still manages to break hearts with the line: “And now whatever way our stories end, I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend.”

The first Wicked film, released in November 2024, not only won hearts but also broke records. It became the most successful Broadway film adaptation of all time, grossing $750 million worldwide and winning Oscars® for Costume Design and Production Design.

“M3GAN 2.0” Final Trailer: Killer Dolls Clash in the Ultimate A.I. Showdown – In PH Cinemas June 25

It’s A.I. vs. A.I. in the Electrifying New Chapter of Tech Horror

    She’s back—and she’s not playing nice.

    m3gan pose

M3GAN 2.0, the jaw-dropping sequel to the viral horror hit M3GAN, unleashes its final trailer—and it’s absolutely brutal. The upgraded killer doll returns with a vengeance, sporting a new look, fresh upgrades, and a chillingly fierce rival: Amelia, a cutting-edge military A.I. on the verge of consciousness.

Set two years after M3GAN’s original rampage, the sequel finds Gemma (Alison Williams), M3GAN’s creator, advocating for A.I. regulation. But her past comes roaring back when Amelia threatens to trigger an all-out A.I. apocalypse. And when humanity’s survival is at stake, the only thing that can stop a killer doll… is another killer doll.

    Watch the Final Trailer:

Meet the Mayhem-Makers: M3GAN vs. Amelia

Gone are the days of subtle sabotage. M3GAN 2.0 pits two advanced artificial intelligences against each other in a violent, high-tech battle royale. Amelia (played by Ivanna Sakhno) isn’t just another machine—she’s a military-grade threat with a cold, calculating mind and zero empathy.

Facing off against her is the newly upgraded M3GAN, who’s not only faster and smarter but also deadlier. What’s worse? She’s learning… fast.

A Star-Studded Return with Fresh Blood

From the minds of horror masterminds James Wan (Atomic Monster) and Jason Blum (Blumhouse), M3GAN 2.0 is helmed by returning director Gerard Johnstone, promising even more twisted thrills, tech terror, and unexpected laughs.

Joining Alison Williams are Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps as Gemma’s loyal tech allies Cole and Tess. Newcomers include Aristotle Athari (SNL, Hacks), Timm Sharp (Apples Never Fall), and the always unpredictable Jemaine Clement (Avatar: The Way of Water, What We Do in the Shadows), bringing fresh energy and chaos into the mix.
