  • Tom Cruise and Christopher Mcquarrie team up again for their biggest Mission yet in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One”

“It’s absolutely that,” says Tom Cruise, who reprises his now iconic role of Ethan Hunt in the film, which he also produces. “People who haven’t seen the other Missions are going to enjoy this one as a standalone experience. And the people who have seen all the other Missions will have a whole other insight into it. The story we have is very special.”

According to director-producer-writer Christopher McQuarrie, back at the helm to direct his fourth Mission: Impossible movie, the key to crafting that story is the emotion. “Everything that you are seeing in this movie is Tom and I focused on two things simultaneously. There is the action that we owe you because you’re coming to see a Mission: Impossible movie, and there’s the emotion that makes that action worth doing,” he says.

Dead Reckoning Part One sees Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and his IMF (Impossible Missions Force) team on their most dangerous mission yet – trying to save the world from a mysterious, all-powerful enemy with the power to control the way humanity perceives reality. “The stakes in this story are as global as global stakes get,” notes McQuarrie.

It takes as its title an old maritime term. “In navigation, ‘dead reckoning’ is the process by which you calculate your course based solely on your last known position,” McQuarrie says. “You’re essentially flying blind. And that becomes quite the metaphor, not only for Ethan, but for several key characters.”

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One

“This is the first time we’ve ever split a Mission: Impossible story over two movies,” says Cruise of Dead Reckoning, Part One of which opens in cinemas July 12, while Part Two is scheduled for release next year. “It’s something we’ve never attempted before because of the complexity of these stories. The scale of these two movies is epic in every sense.”

Cruise remembers the moment the idea first started forming while he and McQuarrie were shooting another ground-breaking Cruise sequel scripted by McQuarrie, which the two also produced: “We were shooting Top Gun: Maverick and we started to talk about Mission. McQ said, ‘We have to make a back-to-back.’ And that really got me,” Cruise says, “because I’ve never done a back-to-back and I like learning new things. So when he said that it was very much like, ‘Yes, okay…’”

They knew it would be challenging. “But we also knew it would be interesting,” Cruise counters. “I’d wanted to build up this franchise to the stage where we are today, where it’s like, ‘Now I feel that we’ve earned this moment, to be able to blow it out on this scale.’”

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One

“We often like to say we’re not competing with anybody but ourselves. We’re looking at the last film and figuring how can we outdo that?,” McQuarrie adds. “The sense of scale becomes bigger with each movie and the sense of limitations becomes that much smaller. You just become a little bit more adventurous every time.”

  • Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman play hilarious opposites in raunchy comedy “No Hard Feelings”

Jennifer Lawrence has always wanted to make a comedy, but she just couldn’t find the right one.

    Enter No Hard Feelings.

For Lawrence, it was a pleasure to do “something totally different… a totally different genre, with fun scenes and ridiculous dialogue that got me excited! Shooting this movie, alongside a brilliant and hilarious cast, was so much fun.”

    NHF UK Premiere 03 P2 0072 bfSV3GGJ

One of those castmates is Andrew Barth Feldman, who plays the socially awkward Percy, whose wealthy helicopter parents post a job listing looking for someone to “date” their introverted son before he leaves for college. This is the job listing that Lawrence’s Maddie responds to so she can save her childhood home.

Watch the red band trailer here below :

The filmmakers thought that the role of Percy might be difficult to cast – and indeed, they conducted an extensive casting process – but one candidate kept rising to the top: Broadway breakthrough Feldman. “When Andrew walked in, we all knew immediately that he was the one,” says Lawrence.

Writer-director Gene Stupnitsky was immediately impressed. “We saw Andrew on the second day, and right away, I thought, ‘He’s so good,’” says Stupnitsky. “He just nailed it. He nailed the comedy, he nailed the emotion. We went and saw a lot of other people – but I was relaxed, because I knew we had Andrew. It was clear, he was always the one.”

    DF 09389 cp r 2000x1333 thumbnail

Stupnitsky says that the chemistry between Lawrence and Feldman started strong and only got stronger through production – and that relationship, that feeling of trust and give-and-take in a fellow actor, encouraged bold, risky performances from both of them. “In his audition with Jennifer, they had amazing chemistry,” he says. “There’s something that was going on in their dynamic that I wasn’t even fully aware of. From day one, their connection was so strong – she could put herself out there, and that would force him to go out as well, to meet her. If she pushed him, he’d go there.”

“Jen is down for things that other people would not be, for sure,” says Feldman, “things that are intimidating for me to even think about. I couldn’t do so much of the stuff that she’s doing in this movie in a million years. Even when she has been afraid, she shows up, and she works really, really hard, and she does it.”

  • ‘The Flash’ Races to Global Box Office Victory with $139-M, Dominates PH Cinemas

Worldwide audiences, eager to catch the first solo outing of the DCEU’s fastest hero, rushed to theaters during the opening weekend of “The Flash,” contributing to a stunning global box office haul of $139 million.

Fastest Man Alive Triumphs in the Philippines

In the Philippines, the film sprinted its way to the top, raking in a massive P45-million gross within its first five days from June 14 – 18. This super-speed success has marked Warner Bros.’ largest opening for 2023, surpassing the earlier superhero smash hit, “Shazam: Fury of the Gods.”

    High Praise for “The Flash”

‘The Flash,’ starring Ezra Miller as the titular superhero, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, and Michael Keaton as Batman, has raced into the hearts of audiences, securing a solid 85% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics across the globe are singing its praises too. James Gunn, the film’s director, has boldly declared it “one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen.”

Echoing these sentiments, Empire magazine says, “Set to be one of the final entries in what we know as the DCEU, this is also one of the best, a witty and warm buddy comedy that deserves to be more than just a Flash in the pan.”

    FLASH 02

American news outlet CNN US touts, “The Flash” is “a movie that wears its love for the comics that inspired it on its crimson-streaked sleeve. Funny, action-packed and effectively touching, anyone familiar with the DC stable of heroes should run, not walk, to see it.”

Popular Australian website News.com.au commends “The Flash” too, calling it “a movie that surprisingly balances the outsized action thrills with emotional heft.”

Locally, Manila Bulletin raves, “‘The Flash’ is a worthy entry to the DC pantheon. That it took so many years for Flash to finally get his own starring film may be a mind-puzzler to most observers, plus the fact that in itself, this film is four years in the making. But now that it’s here, it’s good to be able to say that it was well worth the wait!”

Rappler summed it up well, saying of the film, “All in all, for all the challenges in its way, it’s a fun, sometimes silly, sometimes effectively dramatic and affecting movie that tells a good, if all too familiar story, very well.”

    FLASH 01

    About “The Flash”

Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

“The Flash” ensemble also includes rising star Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon (“Bullet Train,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”), Ron Livingston (“Loudermilk,” “The Conjuring”), Maribel Verdú (“Elite,” “Y tu mamá también”), Kiersey Clemons (“Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” “Sweetheart”), Antje Traue (“King of Ravens,” “Man of Steel”) and Michael Keaton (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Batman”).

“The Flash” is directed by Andy Muschietti, and produced by Barbara Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”) and Michael Disco (“Rampage,” “San Andreas”). The screenplay is by Christina Hodson (“Birds of Prey,” “Bumblebee”), with a screen story by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein (“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Joby Harold (“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” “Army of the Dead”), based on characters from DC. In this heart-pounding paradox, Oppenheimer, played by the talented Cillian Murphy, finds himself faced with a daunting choice: to save the world, he must risk destroying it. Joining Murphy is the exceptional Emily Blunt, portraying Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, a biologist and botanist who adds a compelling dynamic to the story. The star-studded cast also includes Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr., the director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

Drawing inspiration from the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan weaves a gripping narrative that explores the complex themes of living in the atomic age and the role of scientists in society. It’s not just a film; it’s an opportunity to engage in a global conversation about the profound issues Oppenheimer sought to address.

“Oppenheimer” is shot in a breathtaking combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography, introducing sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography for the first time. Nolan’s meticulous attention to detail and innovative approach to cinematography promise a visually stunning experience that will transport you straight into the heart of the narrative.

In a recent interview with Variety, co-author and historian Kai Bird expressed his awe after seeing the film, stating, “I am, at the moment, stunned and emotionally recovering from having seen it. I think it is going to be a stunning artistic achievement.” Bird believes that “Oppenheimer” has the potential to ignite a national and global dialogue about the atomic age, McCarthyism, patriotism, and the responsibility of scientists in a technology-driven society.

  • Patrick Wilson “furthers The Further” in his directorial debut for “Insidious: The Red Door”

In the film, the horror franchise’s original cast, including Wilson, Ty Simpkins and Rose Byrne, returns. To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing their family’s dark past and a host of new and more horrifying terrors that lurk behind the red door.

“It’s exciting to play an ordinary character in an extraordinary situation,” says Wilson. “A very normal family – and all of a sudden, they have this crazy trauma! He travels into another dimension and has to fight a demon! It can go as crazy as you want it to, if you start from a place of real emotion. I like pushing myself, whether it’s physically, or emotionally, or creating tension, or finding humor in the dark moments, or darkness in the light moments.”

That idea – balancing light and dark – became the central theme of his directorial debut, according to Wilson. “Dealing with trauma, dealing with light and dark and the balance, and the art of the story – all of these seeds that were sown in the first film that now come to fruition,” he says. “Some blossom, some ripen, and some spoil.”

Wilson knew that directing his first film would be a learning experience – as it should be. Referring to all the different directors he’s worked with he says, “They’re so different in the way they approach it, and there’s no one way. That’s what I love about this business, and what I love about directors. There are so many ways to get your film made. So my goal was to capitalize on my strengths, what excites me, what interests me, what I’m passionate about. I don’t quite know my style – I think I’m still finding my own style. I’m not so bold to think I’ve figured it out. I’m learning – I’m in a constant state of learning.”

“Patrick had a very strong vision for the film, and knew the direction of where he wanted to take this Lambert family saga,” says producer James Wan, who was also Wilson’s director in the first two Insidious films, as well as in Conjuring and Aquaman. “That made me really excited, since he’d be returning to play the character he played in the first two films. He’s building on the world we had created together whilst adding his own take to it. We talked and discussed about a wide range of things – story, characters, tone, scares, new villain, furthering the Further.”
