‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Disney’ is meant to be a finale, a closing of the Indiana Jones storyline and character and director James Mangold has spoken about the project as a story about how time catches up with us and wishes to explore Indiana Jones as a “hero at sunset.” It would have been an interesting concept considering the way the current time views the practice of Western archeology and the way Indiana Jones’ usual mantra of “it belongs in a museum” carries with it imperialist connotations. It would have been very interesting to watch the final film in the franchise deal with an aging Harrison Ford and a reconciliation of the work that he’s been doing in the first four films.
But that’s not the movie that we get. In order to stay rooted to the soul and essence of the previous films of the franchise, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ is just one grand adventure that gives us an aged Indiana Jones. He is now a relic and a grumpy old man, who fights with his younger neighbours who play their rock music really loud, or is retiring from his teaching position, where his classes are now filled with students who are asleep or uncaring of what he is teaching. It’s a far cry from the Indiana Jones of previous installments. Ford, who is very spritely for an 80 year old man, moves and feels like his age. At a 154 minutes, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ is one big adventure reminiscent of ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.’ It’s one big chase scene after another, one big fight scene after another big fight scene. It can be exhausting to watch and even with all the stuntmen and invasive John Williams music (complete with variations of the Indiana Jones theme for added effect) at full use, it’s hard to imagine Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones doing all the things he’s doing in this movie.
In fact, at some point, I began timing each fight scene and chase scene, and figured for every 15 to 20 minute action sequence, there’s about 3 to 5 minutes of story. ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ is relentless in its adventure plot. It refuses to slow down to work out the relationships between Indiana Jones and his god daughter, Helena Shaw (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge). It feels as if the movie is afraid that if it slows down, inertia will strike and Indiana Jones, at that age, may need to take a long break before the next big sequence.
And it’s a shame because Waller-Bridge’s Helena Shaw presents an interesting counter-point to Ford’s Indiana Jones. Helena is a darker character, with a questionable past and questionable motives and practices; but she is just as bright, brilliant, resourceful, and physically capable as Jones in his prime. Unlike Indiana Jones, she has no lofty ideals about what to do with her knowledge or skill sets. She even manages the only commentary I noticed in the whole movie about Western Imperialization. I wanted more of it and thought that to explore the relationship of the estranged godfather and goddaughter was a great space to really reconcile Indiana Jones in the modern world.
But that’s not the movie we get. We get an overblown adventure story that brings us from Nazi Germany in the 40s to New York and the Mediterranean during the time of the moon landing and then, because of the particular qualities of the supernatural relic, the eponymous Dial of Destiny, to some places in the past.
The movie is less concerned with reconciliation for the concept surrounding Indiana Jones that it is to celebrate the character and to create a satisfying conclusion to the characte and, in essence, for the fans who love him and the movies of their youth. The film as a whole is about capitalizing on nostalgia. It doesn’t seem invested in contextualizing Indiana Jones for younger audiences or future generations. Much like a relic in a museum, it’s meant to be seen and enjoyed as it is, outside the context of the changing world around it.
Indiana Jones is now just a product of its time and it eventually finds it story closed because it can no longer find its own place in the modern world.

His knack for flashing a knowing smirk at just the right moment, combined with the character’s ingenuity, resourcefulness, and a dose of luck, always managed to get Indy out of seemingly impossible situations.
Now, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ will see Ford reprising his iconic role for one last thrilling adventure. Despite initial reservations, Mangold agreed to direct the final Indy adventure, committing to preserve the surprising and human complexities of the iconic character. The sought-after treasure that propels “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is the Archimedes Dial. This centerpiece of intrigue and adventure is inspired by a real-world artifact, the Antikythera mechanism. This ancient Greek device, often referred to as the oldest known analog computer, was used to calculate and display information about astronomical phenomena. Director James Mangold explains the connection, saying, “The moment I knew the movie was about time, opportunities missed, opportunities lost, choices made, irrevocable mistakes, then the question [became], ‘What would be the only thing that would allow me to fix time itself?’” The answer: The Antikythera, rumored to be an invention by Archimedes, speculated to be a sort of time compass.
While the team took creative liberties to imbue the Archimedes Dial with a touch of movie magic, it still represents a shift in the franchise. Harrison Ford appreciates this fresh take, noting that while previous films often used artifacts with religious connotations—such as the Sankara Stones, the Holy Grail, and the Ark of the Covenant—the Dial “was fooling with the nature of science,” offering a new thematic layer to the adventurous saga.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” flaunts a constellation of talent. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, a three-time Emmy® Award-winning actress famed for “Fleabag,” takes on the role of Helena Shaw. Known for her fierce independence, Helena engages audiences with her wittiness, qualities which Director Mangold sees as reminiscent of golden age Hollywood stars like Katharine Hepburn and Barbara Stanwyck. Filmed in various global locations including Morocco, Sicily, Scotland, and England, the movie also utilizes the stages at Pinewood Studios in London. Director James Mangold assembled a stellar creative team that included production designer Adam Stockhausen, director of photography Phedon Papamichael, costume designer Joanna Johnston, special effects supervisor Alistair Williams, and visual effects supervisor Andrew Whitehurst.
Together, this group conceived breathtaking visuals and adrenaline-pumping action sequences, crafting memorable scenes like the 1944 train sequence, a horseback chase through a New York ticker tape parade, a thrilling tuk-tuk chase through Tangier’s streets, an intense underwater dive in Greece, and the movie’s grand climactic sequence.
The production’s emphasis on practical sets and actual locations was instrumental in maintaining the authentic feel of an Indiana Jones film. According to Harrison Ford, capturing the “different culture” and “different feeling” of these places was essential to the movie’s experience.
Oscar® winner Adam Stockhausen, known for his collaborations with Wes Anderson and Steven Spielberg, shared similar sentiments. He believes that being physically present in a location brings an authenticity that can’t be replicated. Nevertheless, Stockhausen managed to parallel the grandeur of real-world locations with meticulously detailed sets at Pinewood. The dynamic opening sequence – a perfect blend of locations such as Bamburgh Castle and North Yorkshire Moors Railway station and Stockhausen’s inventive designs – sees a young Indy attempting to rescue his friend from Nazi captors aboard a moving train. Inspired by archival photos, Stockhausen created an authentic wartime train complete with the treasure carriage containing replicas of significant art pieces and antiquities looted by the Nazis, such as the Lance of Longinus (or the Spear of Destiny) and the Imperial Regalia of the Holy Roman Empire. This commitment to immersive production design underscores the film’s breathtaking visuals, making it a truly memorable addition to the Indiana Jones series.
6. Ingenious De-Aging Techniques
One of the most ambitious aspects of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” involved a meticulous de-aging process to make Harrison Ford, then 79 years old, appear as a 37-year-old Indiana Jones. This was accomplished by employing cutting-edge face replacement technology (ILM FaceSwap), which captured Ford’s on-set performance and mapped it onto a digital version of his younger self.
The ILM team used Lucasfilm’s extensive archive of Harrison Ford’s previous Indiana Jones films to ensure the final result was convincingly youthful. Mangold praised the technology for preserving the soul of Ford’s performance, the advanced system allowed him to review a younger version of Harrison Ford only days after wrapping up the shooting of each sequence. The successful use of de-aging technology is a significant highlight of the film’s production.
7. Re-creating the Apollo 11 Parade
To celebrate the Apollo 11 mission, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” features a sequence set during the August 1969 parade in Manhattan. This monumental task was brought to life in Glasgow, Scotland, which doubled for Manhattan.
Production designer Adam Stockhausen and action vehicles supervisor Alex King looked at period footage and photographs for inspiration on how to dress the streets and the vehicles. One such addition was a re-creation of the 1952 Chrysler Imperial Parade Phaeton that carried the Apollo 11 astronauts.
The production team spent three weeks preparing St. Vincent Street in Glasgow before closing it for seven days of shooting, which included up to 1,000 background actors. Director of photography Phedon Papamichael ensured the sequence was colorful and vibrant, contrasting the 1944 prologue and indicating the changing world around Indiana Jones.
The sequence later transitions into a chase through Manhattan’s subway tunnels. For these scenes, a full-scale replica of a subway station was constructed on Pinewood’s 007 Stage, complete with authentic aging details. This contrast of locations and tones offered a rich visual variety that is a trademark of the Indiana Jones franchise.
8. Iconic Props Revisited
The iconic fedora and whip are back! These quintessential Indy props make a return, completing our hero’s adventurous look. Costume designer Joanna Johnston, guided by director James Mangold’s vision for a gritty realism, carefully crafted the characters’ wardrobes. Johnston aimed to honor the legacy of her former mentor, the renowned costume designer Anthony Powell, with whom she had previously collaborated on Indiana Jones films.
When it came to Indy’s attire, Johnston stayed true to the established wardrobe, ensuring that the fedora and leather jacket remained non-negotiable elements. When Harrison Ford stepped back into the costume, it was as if he had never left the role. The seamless transition back into Indy’s signature look was a testament to the enduring nature of the character.

Franchise veteran Rebecca Ferguson, who plays Ilsa Faust, says that of the three Mission movies she’s starred in so far, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has seen her pull off her most impactful action sequences. “What’s the point in doing a Mission movie if you’re not going to do the odd stunt?” she says. “I think one of the reasons why Mission is such a love of my life is the training. It’s not knowing what I’m in for in the next film. I love the fact that you never know what is going to be asked of your character to train. Whether it is a knife fight or a gun fight or martial arts or perhaps a sword fight, which was introduced in this [film] for me.”
Exciting new action scenes? Way to go, Ilsa! According to director Christopher McQuarrie, who joined the franchise in Rogue Nation, the same time that Ferguson did, he, Cruise and Ferguson have all steadfastly refused to let the relationship between Ilsa and Ethan slip into the tropes that have often plagued the spy genre in the past. “I was never interested in Ilsa just being a typical love interest for Ethan,” McQuarrie says.
Another familiar face audiences will see in Dead Reckoning Part One is Vanessa Kirby’s morally fluid Alanna Mitsopolis, aka The White Widow, who was introduced in Fallout.
“There are a lot more twists and turns in this one, the stakes are definitely higher,” Kirby says of her character, a powerful and cunning arms dealer, black marketeer, and political intriguer at the center of a dark web of spies, smugglers and cutthroats. “The White Widow really goes through something in this. She seems impenetrable. It’s a lot more complex and emotionally challenging for everybody.”
Dead Reckoning Part One continues the long-established Mission tradition of adding to its already enviable roster an ensemble of new, dynamic, and formidable characters. A prime example is Hayley Atwell’s Grace.

“She’s an artful dodger, a lone wolf,” Atwell says of Grace, who, when she steals the key to a powerful weapon from Ethan at the start of the film, sets the CIA on her and his tail, lighting the fuse on a globe-trotting chase.
Atwell describes the dynamic between Grace and Ethan as flirty, fun and spontaneous. “Grace and Ethan are two people who shouldn’t be in the same room together but are forced to be because they have a shared common goal. The more she exasperates him, the funnier it becomes.”

When last we met the Lambert family, astral projectors Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Dalton (Ty Simpkins) had survived multiple trips into The Further. Dalton had been kidnapped by a demon… Josh had rescued him, only to be trapped in The Further while a ghost possesses his body in our world… that ghost, in Josh’s body, had rampaged through his house, trying to kill his family… and Dalton had ventured back into The Further to find his real father and bring him back.
“After the second film, I felt there was nothing more to be done or said or explored with the Lambert family,” says Wilson who, aside from returning as Josh Lambert, also marks his directorial debut with Insidious: The Red Door, opening across Philippine cinemas July 5. “I had saved my son, been saved myself, been possessed; I had gone through just about everything you can do in a horror movie. The biggest question that I asked, and that I wanted to pose to the audience, was what happens to a family after ten years, when you’ve been hypnotized in order to forget your family trauma?
“In hindsight, that’s probably not the healthiest way to deal with trauma: ‘It didn’t happen, you’ll forget this.’ I wanted to unpack that,” Wilson continues.
Rose Byrne
In Insidious: The Red Door, the epic conclusion to the terrifying saga of the Lambert family, the story picks up as the original cast reunites for the third chapter in the family’s saga and fifth and final film in the blockbuster horror franchise, following two prequels. Ten years after the events of the second film, Josh and Renai (Rose Byrne) have divorced, as Josh struggles to piece together a life that seems to have major holes he can’t fill. Dalton, now a young adult, is heading off to an East Coast art college, and has a strained relationship with his father.
“It’s stilted because of the events that have happened, and they don’t really know why,” says Wilson. “They have missing chapters – holes in their memory – and there’s resentment from Dalton’s side. Two men who can’t quite express their desire to make their relationship better because they don’t know where it went wrong. And yet they’re tied together in more ways than one, and Insidious fans know exactly what that means.”

“I love the fact that we were able to bring the original cast back together to bring the Lamberts’ saga to a close,” says producer Jason Blum. “Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, of course, but also Ty Simpkins, Lin Shaye, Leigh Whannell, Angus Sampson and Andrew Astor. Getting to see how the cast has aged – especially the actors who were children and have grown into young men – underscores the heart of the story for me: that this is a family finding their way as they move through their lives.”
Reuniting the cast became a central pivot point of Wilson’s direction of the film – his reason for wanting to do it, and later, a driving force in his vision for the film.

Says Wilson, “I wanted the movie to feel like it closes out the Lambert trilogy – if you’ve seen the first two movies, you get a feeling for them – but I’ve shown it to people who know nothing of the Insidious franchise, and I know, you don’t need to see those movies to understand.”

While Nick Fury is no stranger to threats in the MCU, it has been a long time since we saw him in action. DreamWorks Animation dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a quirky teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed in “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken”, with the titular role voiced by Lana Condor, who skyrocketed to global stardom as Lara Jean from the highly-successful YA (young adult) franchise, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
The ocean is a mysterious world—one that land dwellers can only begin to imagine. That world—and the fantastic creatures that make their home beneath the waves—has long been a source of fascination for Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Kirk DeMicco. With his fourth animated feature, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, DeMicco borrows the best ideas from folklore and myth to tell the relatable story of a not-so-ordinary teenager who, after discovering a surprising truth about herself and her family lineage, learns to embrace her inner hero.
“As a filmmaker, I’ve always been interested in subverting expectations in my storytelling,” DeMicco says. “When it came to Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, one of the things that excited me most was the opportunity to do just that with the mythology of the krakens and mermaids. Traditionally, the kraken has been portrayed as a monstrous creature, something to be feared and avoided at all costs. But in this film, we wanted to explore the idea of krakens as powerful and benevolent protectors of the sea. Similarly, we wanted to take the traditional image of mermaids and turn it on its head, creating a more complex and nuanced mythology that challenged audience expectations.”
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken beautifully walks the line between character-driven comedy and larger, impactful themes of identity, family responsibility, love and honest acceptance. When the film opens, Ruby is a charmingly awkward, insecure 16-year-old who spends time with her close-knit group of friends when she’s not tutoring her crush, Connor. She’s desperate to invite him to prom—even if it is a post-colonial patriarchal construct—but her mom, Agatha, has forbidden her to attend. The event is being held on a boat, and if Agatha has one rule, it’s that Ruby cannot go near the water. Which wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t live in Oceanside, where, you know, hanging out on the pier is essentially the number one pastime.
“The film is an inter-generational story that taps into the cultural chorus surrounding teen empowerment,” DreamWorks Animation President Margie Cohn says. “We feel that Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, has the potential to become the girl-power movie of the summer, and, we hope, a touchstone for the generations of girls still to come.”
