  • Revenge is Sweet: a review of the first 6 episodes of ‘The Glory’ with Song Hye Kyo

After having seen over a hundred Kdramas in the last three years, it’s glaringly obvious that the new Netflix Kdrama ‘The Glory’ is unlike any I’ve seen before. As a Netflix original, it is direct to the streaming platform and so it can do away with certain things we’ve come to expect: it only has 8 episodes (and its part two will be released sometime next year around March), its adult themes include imagery of graphic sex and some nudity, and way more graphic displays of violence. The show doesn’t pull any of its punches and it doesn’t have to since it isn’t released on Korean television, it doesn’t have to abide by their television regulations.

So the revenge story that is at the heart of ‘The Glory’ can get very graphic and detailed. There’s an almost campy way by which the bullies of the story, as they are depicted in the series, can appear one-dimensional and on the extreme side of evil. They have no redeeming factor and the victim, Moon Dong-eun, is a poor girl out of luck. No one is on her side and after a tremendous amount of bullying (as depicted in the first season), she has chosen to turn her whole life into an instrument of revenge against her bullies.

    The Glory 4
    Photo from Netflix

This incident happened in 2004 and the story is set in 2022, so 18 years have passed and what unfolds is a dangerous game of vengeance that has been carefully planned for years. Dong-eun has been stripped off of all her dignity and her soul and she is ready to commit worse upon her tormentors. At the center of it all is her becoming the homeroom teacher of the daughter of the biggest bully of the group, Park Yeon-jin.

The show is polished and slick. It can be campy in how evil the bullies are (after 18 years, they have not mellowed in any way; they are just as cruel only older) and how steadfast Dong-eun is set on her revenge. It revels in its formalist tone with great lighting, amazing set pieces, and fantastic drone shots that really create a sense of place and bigness to the show. The largeness of the filmmaking makes Dong-eun’s scheme to exact her payback seem biblical, almost divine, even when scriptwriter Kim Eun Seok (of ‘Descendants of the Sun’) writes a stirring narration from Dong-eun that she doesn’t believe in god. How could she? The narration, written as letters from Dong-eun to Yeon-jin, reveals the deep obsession she has over her tormentor. It’s almost like the dark side of love. It creates a frightening effect that can really put a chill down your spine when you realize how far someone will go for revenge.

    The Glory 5
    Photo from Netflix

The show is quick to justify Dong-eun’s vengeance, you even root for her, but it also manages to temper that bloodlust with a sense of humanity. On her way, Dong-eun finds people who are keen on helping her in her path, whether intentionally or not. And this is when the show is at its best.

Early on, she meets Mrs. Kang, who becomes a sort of partner. She also meets a young doctor Joo Yeo-jeong, from whom she learns the game of Go (the reasons of which are all part of her plan), who also falls in love with her. It’s in her interactions with these two people that Dong-eun finds herself in a moment of grace; a chance to feel like a human being and while she quickly holds her ground to maintain her purpose and determination to continue on her path of revenge, it’s in these moments where the show really shines.

    The Glory 3
    Photo from Netflix

Song Hye-kyo’s last drama ‘Now We’re Breaking Up’ was not a good comeback for her as the character she played was flat and uninteresting and her performance didn’t help create any sort of texture for the character at all. Here, as Dong-eun, she is once again in that same vein – a person who is holding back, creating walls, and trying to look fierce as she goes head on against her former tormentors. In long stretches of scenes, she can play off on one note and so it becomes a breath of fresh air when she does have moments with Yeo-jeong (a very charming Lee Do-hyun) or with her interactions with Miss Kang (played excellently by Yeom Hye-ran), the two people who can bring out her softer side. It’s there where we can see the Song Hye-kyo of ‘Descendants of the Sun.’

    The Glory 2
    Photo from Netflix

The bullies, on the other hand, Lim Ji-yeon, Park Sung-hoon, Cha Joo-young, Kim Hi-eora, and Kim Gun-woo, are having a blast being as evil as possible. They are chewing up the scenery at every turn and it seems they are having fun with it so we have fun watching their world slowly crumble as Dong-eun returns into their lives and turns the tables.

    The Glory 1
    Photo from Netflix

With only 8 episodes on the first season, of which the first 6 does an excellent job at setting up the stakes and raising the tension, ‘The Glory’ is poised to be another daring Netflix original show that is set to explore the dark side of revenge. Strangely enough, it makes us root for the victim-turned-tormentor and gives us a space to really express our darkest thoughts against the topic of bullying and bullies. It’s not a comfortable feeling, this blood lust, but it’s an interesting one to explore and dig into as we enter a totally new year. How do we address the issues of bullying? And how long are we to accept a system that protects the rich and powerful?

‘The Glory’ shows us that revenge is sweet but also asks, “at what cost?”

  • REVIEW: ‘Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again’ doesn’t really stand out from the Disney+ catalogue

I’ll be completely honest and say that I have not seen a single film from the ‘Night at the Museum’ franchise. None of the three installments, starring Ben Stiller as Larry Daley, the night guard at the American Museum of Natural History, who discovers that an ancient mystical tablet brings the exhibits to life. So when I saw the animated film ‘Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again’ on Disney+, I don’t know why I clicked on it but I wanted something different from all the things I’ve been watching lately – heavy, dramatic, or with a language that I don’t know – so I thought it would be nice to see something light, wholesome, and not anything that I needed subtitles for.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WdSQFdMYZg

Surprisingly, ‘Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again’ was an easy film to follow. Even without having seen the first three movies, I was able to quickly figure out the dynamics and relationships of the characters that were present – Larry, his son Nick, and the exhibits Theodore Roosevelt, Octavius, Jebediah, Sacagawea, Laaa, Joan of Arc, and a whole bunch of other characters. The frenetic pacing and the animation style really made it feel that this was made for the kids, as a light-hearted for-the-family entertainment type of movie for a weekend movie night.

    Night at the Museum 1

In this fourth installment of the franchise, Larry is off overseas to take over a new museum and makes a decision to let his son, Nick, take over the job as the night guard. Nick is now in high school but is suffering from the teen angst of not having enough confidence in himself. He wants to try out for the school’s jazz band and ask the girl he likes out but he’s clumsy and doubts himself. So Larry suggests he takes his old job as it has done wonders for him and his self-esteem.

All seems to be going well except Kahmunrah, an exhibit with ambitions for world domination, manages to escape from the basement (due to Nick’s lapse in judgment) and begins to wreak havoc in and around the museum with the goal to take over the world.

There’s very little plot and character work happening in this film as it really is just Nick and the other exhibits trying to stop Kahmunra (and his partner Seth) from taking over the world. It’s one gag after the other with shallow attempts at pushing for Nick to get more courageous.

    Night at the Museum 2

But there’s no real depth to the story, no real internal struggle that needs to be solved for Nick or any of the characters. It’s loud and fast-paced and full of spills and thrills that are meant to keep the kids watching engaged until the end of the movie. Maybe, hopefully, it will get them interested to go to a museum but with no real big spectacle or memorable moment or particularly heart-warming scene, ‘Night at the Museum: Kahmunra Rises Again’ doesn’t really pop out or stand out from anything else Disney+ has to offer.

    Night at the Museum 3

Without even the familiar voices of the stars of the live-action films like Ben Stiller or Owen Wilson, there’s very little to attach new viewers to this installment. With all the amazing films and tv shows one can watch on Disney+, this will have a hard time finding its place in the catalog. The platform is going to have to work harder to make its IPs like ‘Night at the Museum’ stand out from Disney+’s connection to Star Wars, the MCU, or their animated films and collaboration with Pixar. There’s just too much in there for something like this to find its audience.

    My Rating:

  • ‘Emily in Paris’ Season 3 Q&A: Lily Collins, Ashley Park, & Camille Razat Talk About their Characters’ Growth, Friendship, & More

Emily Cooper is back for another season of Netflix’s Emily in Paris, streaming this December 21. Now in its third season, the hit Netflix show follows Emily as she faces more life-changing choices, involving her dream career and further complications in her romantic life.

Before Emily in Paris season 3 releases on Netflix, its stars Lily Collins (Emily Cooper), Ashley Park (Mindy Chen), and Camille Razat (Camille) joined a virtual roundtable interview with the Philippine press where they talked about this season’s story trajectory, the growth of their characters, and more!

Check out the highlights of the Q&A below:

Can you share about your character’s growth this season?

Camille Razat: I think we get to see more of her work side, we see more of her at the gallery, being an artist. So more work side to that, and I would say there would be more love triangles and more complicated things.

Lily Collins: For me, you get to see me make decisions and then per usual, once I made decisions, they slightly become undone in certain ways based on experiences that happened. But there’s a quiet confidence about Emily this season and feeling more grounded in her skin and the city that I was excited to partake in.

Ashley Park: I think Mindy, in the first season, I don’t know if you’re a horoscope kind of person with you know, your star sign, your rising, mask, and your moon… But I feel like, in the first season, we really got to see Mindy’s rising sign, the mask, the [people’s] first impression of her as she gets to know Emily. In the second season, she grows closer to her and she gets to be vulnerable and we get to understand who she is on the inside, her moon. And I think that in the third season, she has to figure out how to navigate her past and present and not apologize for herself anymore and I think that we really see her star sign.

    Emily in Paris S3 3

How did the styles of your characters evolve across the three seasons of the show?

Ashley Park: I feel like, a lot. All three women, I feel like all of us have really found our identities, and they’re all becoming the women that they really want to be, and really trying to discover… We self-express through fashion, and I think especially for Mindy and also Emily, you know this is [Mindy’s] second year in Paris, and Emily, she’s within her first year, and we have a Parisian here. So, all of them are grounding on who they are in Paris, whether they lived there for a month, a year, or their whole life. I really feel like everybody’s found this chic tone this season, that’s very empowering. Especially watching it last night I felt like, even all of us are as bright and risk-takers as we want to be, or feel in that moment, there’s a really chic, nice undertone this season.

Lily Collins: And I think for me, specifically, there’s a more French quiet confidence about Emily’s wardrobe even though she’s as bright and bubbly. She’s being influenced by the women that she’s surrounded by. And feeling quiet and confident in her place in the city, it gets shown in her wardrobe. So it’s as big as you hope for, but at the same time slightly tailored down to feel a little bit more grounded.

If there was an Emily in Paris spinoff where Emily gets a vacation someplace else, where would you like her to be?

Lily Collins: I would say… I have two places and I know what they think I’m gonna choose because I love Copenhagen and I think Emily in Denmark would be amazing. But I also think that Tokyo would be really fun, because for me, I love being in Tokyo because it feels like you’re in the past and the future at the same time, and for Emily to be surrounded by so much visual stimulation, I think would just be so fascinating and like another fish out of water experience. I think that would be so fun.

What can you say to the viewers out there who are doubting themselves in terms of taking a leap of faith in their career and romance, just like Emily did?

Lily Collins: I think not being afraid to fall is really important. I think letting go of control and not being afraid to not have it go perfectly is really important in order to succeed and go forward. And sometimes, you have to rely on others to lift you up, and that’s okay. So as long as you know that you have a support system around you to support you when things don’t go your way and to celebrate you when you do, it makes it that much easier.

What are the important things about friendship that you’ve learned while working on this project?

Ashley Park: What I love about the female friendships in [the show], between us three is there’s no sense of judgment. I think that we all have our separate challenges and we go through different obstacles, and we didn’t even see eye to eye sometimes. And I think that the grounded support that comes into friendship, comes from this non-judgmental nature, in the spirit of just trying to be empathetic and being there for each other and I think that’s really beautiful.

Lily Collins: Yeah, and I’ve learned so much from both of these women on set, but really offset, about embracing who you are. Learning and growing, and not being afraid to ask for help or ask questions, being you. As simple as seeing you with and without your makeup, is the same as seeing you with and without knowing all the answers all the time. It’s like you’re being able to be vulnerable as well as strong, and that’s a beautiful thing and both of these women beside me on screen and off, they emulate that all the time, and I think it’s very inspiring.
