  • Embracing Equity and honoring women’s individuality for IWD 2023

“Equal opportunities are no longer enough” — this year’s International Women’s Day Celebration seeks to move past advocating for equality and start embracing equity – sharing the passion and excitement that comes from valuing and supporting everyone’s differences to create a more inclusive world.

    IWD Event

To celebrate the strength and tenacity of Filipina women, Lactacyd and Buscopan Venus created an avenue where women can come and celebrate the power of diversity and inclusivity, sharing experiences on how to thrive through numerous obstacles and emerge as women of impact and influence.

Dubbed #IAmWoman, Lactacyd and Buscopan Venus celebrated International Women’s Day with the aim to unite women from all walks of life and work towards advancing gender equity together with the #IamWoman Femme Council leading the charge.

“Filipina women have long been seen as strong and resilient women, but the Filipina woman of today has broken through multiple glass ceilings at work, at home, and in society,” said Vanee Gosiengfiao, General Manager for Sanofi Consumer Healthcare PHHKTW, “For this year’s women’s day celebration, we wanted to create a positive, inspiring, and empowering avenue for women to be proud of their unique voice and feel motivated to use that voice to break through the boxes we women are often put in.”

Women of Impact: Earning a seat at the table
Despite gains in the representation of women in different industries over the years, it still did not lessen women’s existing barriers in the workforce.

    IamWoman Femme Council

To provide insight on “leading by example”, frontrunners in their respective fields, TV Host and Co-founder of She Talks Asia, Bianca Gonzalez along with the first half of the Femme Council, Sustainable PH President, Shawntel Nieto, Sports Producer and Host, Sam Corrales, Dermatologist, Dr. Kaycee Reyes, and Modern Parenting Editor-in-Chief, Marga Tupaz talked about their experiences gaining leadership in their industries and what it took to earn a seat at the table and make a genuine impact for women.

    IAmWoman Women of Influence

Bianca noted from the discussion that as women leaders in their respective industries, the progress they are pushing for is more than just women’s representation, it is being able to create more spaces for their fellow women to thrive and reach their maximum potential, “Whether it be in our homes, in our circles, and even in our communities- as women, let’s embrace equity and celebrate our own individualities, our experiences, and our journeys.”

    SHAWNTEL NIETO

She also highlighted that to earn a seat at the table, women must look within and allow themselves to flourish to attain their full potential.

Women of Influence: Thriving under the microscope
With the talk on representation, the conversation moved forward to women in media, particularly the double standards, living up to impossible expectations, and the constant scrutiny women get from the public. To expand on the topic, Bianca along with the second half of the Femme Council, TV Actress and Model, Chesca Kramer, Content Creator and Entrepreneur, Ayn Bernos, and Licensed Professional Teacher and Co-founder of Queer Safe Spaces, Roanne Carreon talked about their lives on-screen and off-screen and the pressures and responsibilities they carry as women of influence.

BIANCA GONZALEZ for digital use only

Gonzalez underscored that the most crucial role as women of influence is becoming responsible role models to the next generation of women and paving the way to allow them to thrive in a safer and more inclusive world.

    CHESCA KRAMER

“At a time we’re in, there’s many voices from social media, there’s friends, people that they meet, so I try to make sure that my children know who their anchor is. So, anchor would have to be, with my children, God first, and then your family. So, keep them grounded, keep them connected to who they really are, and while they know they can come to their parents any time. There is no question that is too hard or too matured. They know that their safe space is with me, where I do not judge them, but I’m here to listen to them,” said Chesca Kramer.

    AYN BERNOS

“I feel like it’s so important to present yourself especially if you have your own sphere of influence to be as confident as you can, to embrace yourself as you can because you’re not only representing yourself but other women as well, who are following your footsteps,” Ayn Bernos added.

    KENDRA KRAMER

As the new face of Lactacyd and the voice of the youth, Kendra Kramer, through a video created specifically for the event, also shared her experiences of growing up in the spotlight and how has good role models influenced how she views the world, “I have three main women role models, which two of them is my grandmas and my mom. [And] If there’s one thing that’s common between the three of them is that they like spending time with me a lot, and I feel like that has impacted me so much because I don’t think I’d be the person who I am today if they did not spend as much time with me as they are right now.”

    SAM CORRALES

    #IamWoman: Your Best Version

Closing the event is Tupaz acknowledging women’s individualities as what makes them unique and resilient and emphasizing the importance of fostering a sense of community where women can be better together.

    IamWoman Femme Council 1

For Lactacyd and Busocpan Venus, the goal of celebrating women’s day is to uplift and help women become the best versions of themselves inside and out. It was also for this reason that the Femme Council was created, to bring together powerful women who can motivate aspiring Filipinas to be the women they envision themselves to be.

“Brands like Lactacyd and Buscopan Venus exist to help women be the best versions of themselves amidst the challenges that life throws at them on a daily basis, said Gosiengfiao. “We want women to realize that we are here to listen, we understand what they’re going through, and we are here to enable them through their journey in whatever way we can.”

“Embracing equity is a formidable but not entirely impossible task and celebrating our own and each other’s differences brings us one step closer to it,” she added.

  • Google Doodle honors pioneer Filipina writer Paz Marquez-Benitez on her 129th birthday

On March 3, Google celebrates legendary Filipina writer Paz Marquez-Benitez on her 129th birthday with her very own Google Doodle, in honor of her pioneering work in literature.

    Paz Marquez Benitez Google Doodle

Marquez-Benitez, a renowned Filipino author, is famous for her work Dead Stars, the first-ever modern short story in English from the Philippines. The Doodle features an illustration of Marquez-Benitez set against a field of shining stars, calling back to the title of the short story.

Framed as a somber and melancholic love story of the engaged lawyer Alfredo Salazar and the young and charming Julia Salas, Dead Stars is a deeper allegory critical of the American occupation and its effect on local culture and social norms.

Marquez-Benitez would go on to become a popular writing professor at the University of the Philippines until her retirement in 1951. Her work and tutelage at UP encouraged and inspired many other highly regarded writers over the decades. On top of this, she also founded what is now the Philippine Women’s University, advancing the cause of women’s education in the country.

“Google Philippines is proud to honor an important figure in Philippine literature, Paz Marquez-Benitez. Our rich literary heritage would definitely not be the same today without Marquez-Benitez’s impactful contributions, not only with her creations, but also with her valuable mentorship of a long line of writers in the country,” said Mervin Wenke, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Google Philippines.

You can view the Doodle on March 3 by visiting google.com, as well as http://www.google.com/doodles/paz-marquez-benitezs-129th-birthday.

  • Tinapayan Festival’s Lucito Chavez Awarded Most Outstanding Alumnus at Cuenca Institute’s 75th Founding Anniversary

There’s more to talk about Cuenca, Batangas other than its local bake shops. Recently, Cuenca Institute celebrated its 75th Founding Anniversary, acknowledging and paying tribute to outstanding alumni who have made their marks in the world and succeeded in what they were meant to do. One of whom is Lucito ‘Chito’ Chavez, Founder and General Manager of Tinapayan Festival.

Chavez garnered the highest award for all of his help in building and establishing the town of Cuenca, Batangas as the Home of the Bakers. Part of Class 1974, Chavez along with his good friend Arch. Nelson Chavez has worked closely together to bring pride and joy to the town.

“It’s not about what you gain from succeeding but from the lessons you learn as you go along the way. Being a Cuencano has helped shape me into the man I am now. I look back at all the formative years, and I know that I have learned so much during my high school years to catapult me into doing my part as a Filipino citizen, Cuencano, and Batangueno,” shares Chavez.

During his speech in Cuenca Institute’s 75th Founding Anniversary, he shares how he has put into practice what he has learned in school. “Wala akong kodigo ngayon. Hindi ako nagbaon ng kodigo dahil bawal sa Cuenca Institute. Mag-aral kayo, kagaya ng disiplina ng mga guro dito,” shares Chavez. (I don’t have crib sheets  for my speech today. Because crib sheets are forbidden at Cuenca Institute. That’s how the teachers here disciplined me so you should follow in their teachings.)

    Cuenca Institute and its Contribution

For all the years of its existence, Cuenca Institute has produced great minds with students graduating with honors, pursuing great careers, and placing the school on the map of the Philippines. Graduates of Cuenca Institute became great professionals; some have become deans, doctors, town and city mayors, and successful business owners here and abroad.

    President Philippine Society of Baking
    President, Philippine Society of Baking

Chito Chavez and Arch. Nelson Cuevas are some of those outstanding graduates. They have become pioneering advocates for local bread who pushed for the improvement and recognition of local bakers in the country. Part of this campaign was paving the way for agricultural crops to be utilized in local baking. Led by Arch. Cuevas, the incorporation of agricultural products led to the innovation of pandesal made from kamote, carrots, squash, ube, and so much more. This has then led to empowering the Department of Science and Technology as they now develop and use agricultural crops in their nutribun program.

“Si Arch. Nelson Cuevas ang unang gumawa ng pandesal na may kamote, pandesal na may kalabasa, carrot, at ngayon ay proyekto na ng Department of Science and Technology sa kanilang nutribun na project,” emphasizes Chavez. (Arch. Nelson Cuevas was the first to create pandesal that incorporated sweet potatoes, squash, and carrots, which now inspires the nutribun project of the Department of Science and Technology.)

Encouraging the Community to Lift Local Bakery Industry

For over four decades, Chavez has longed for and pushed to lift the local bakery industry one step at a time. Together with partners in the private and public sectors, he has worked closely with the key players to help the livelihoods of many bakers, farmers, and store owners in the process. “There’s still a lot for us to do to bring back the glory of pandesal making in the country. If years back, 40% of flour was used by the bakery industry to create the ever-beloved pandesal, today, only a mere 19% of flour production is used to create our national bread,” he shares.

    Chito Chavez Production Area

This is one of the plights of many in the local bakery industry due to several economic circumstances but Chavez encourages more concerned citizens, especially those from Cuenca to take their part in helping solve the problem in the bakery industry and uplift the livelihood that once was the bread and butter of the town.

Chito Chavez is just one of the many Cuenca Institute graduates who look back at the past and ensure that their learnings and journey shape what they become. But for his goal of building a strong local bakery industry, it is essential that customers also work together by supporting local bakeries, and choosing healthy options such as products with agricultural crops incorporated in them.

  • Transforming Your Christmas Bonus Into Potential Savings

It’s Christmas! This means that many employees will happily receive bonuses this month. Many employees look forward to their 13th month pay and other benefits before the actual holidays start. Plans to purchase gifts for friends and loved ones have been made throughout the year. Lists have been filled and items have been added to online carts to prepare for the upcoming shopping spree. It is easy to think that going all out is the best way to go, but there is an alternative that can potentially be rewarding and profitable in the future. And that’s in setting up savings.

Allotting our holiday funds for savings is a thought that seldom occurs to many of us. But in these uncertain times with the rise of inflation and the surge in prices of basic goods, a second option to shore up savings could be the wise decision. Having backup resources can cover a multitude of emergency needs such as medical, maintenance, and repair expenses. So, if there is an opportunity to receive bonuses in the coming months, it could be prudent to designate an amount for your spending, and the rest for savings or other means.

Here are some ways how you can manage your holiday funds wisely:

    Anticipate What’s Coming
There are several types of bonuses that employees can receive during holidays. There is the mandatory 13th-month pay, Christmas bonuses, special gifts or rewards, and even 14th month pay if you are one of the lucky few who receive this. Knowing how much you will get allows you to plan ahead.

    Allot Expenses According to Necessity
You can also plan to spend your newly acquired resources by necessity. A good amount will surely be spent on gifts for friends and family, some for expenses for food and celebrations, and it is also prudent to set some aside for emergency purposes and the rest for potential savings.

There is No Need to Spend it All
One misconception is that this is the best time to spend everything since it is the holidays anyway. But being extra wise will really help especially if you designate a good portion of your bonuses for savings. This way, you prevent unnecessary spending and even allow for potential profits.

    Choose to Save
There are many opportunities to secure and grow your savings through reliable savings accounts and time deposits. And through EastWest, you can start to easily manage your savings to be able to supply your daily and future financial needs.

Whether you will have extra funds this coming holiday season or you have been slowly building up your savings, it is always a wise decision to save. Through EW, you can have a reliable partner that gives you easy access and smart security that will keep your money safe. Having savings gives you a cushion and a safety net for any situation that may come in the future. It also bolsters your potential funds through interest rates that can grow your money. You get all this and more when you partner with EastWest.
