Beach Hut Sunscreen Champions Dreams with Historic Beach Football Tournament in Boracay

Beach Hut Sunscreen, the #1 beach sunscreen in the Philippines, continues to make waves as a true outdoor essential, concluding its first-ever Beach Hut Beach Football Festival in Boracay and empowering women one goal at a time.

Seven all-girl football teams from Luzon and Visayas went head-to-head for the top spot, with Manila Digger Team emerging as the Grand Champions, taking home the grand prize of PHP 100,000 in cash. Borongan FC won second place, winning PHP 50,000 in cash, while Beach Hut FC Green came in third and received PHP 25,000 in cash. All winners also received Beach Hut products and sponsored prizes.

The Beach Hut Beach Football Festival championed Filipina footballers from Luzon and Visayas, inviting teams to join a series of multi-destination beach football games across the country’s most popular beach destinations, all under the maximum protection of Beach Hut Sunscreen.

The competition brought together promising young Filipina football talents and provided them with a platform to showcase their skills – something that was rarely seen before. And aside from the beach football competition, local luminaries in the women’s football scene also joined in the fun through an exhibition game.

UP Women’s Football team Field Player, Bethany Talbot, expressed her excitement about the experience and the bright future of women’s football in the Philippines. “I’ve never experienced or ever watched beach football let alone an all-girls beach football tournament so kudos to Beach Hut. This is such an amazing project tournament that they set up,” she said.

Likewise, Women’s National Football team Field Player, Camille Rodriguez congratulated the brand for their efforts, “You are setting the standard for believing in women’s football. You put a girl’s team, we have young girls here, very young promising talent, the ates who are making them better every game, to the coaches who always tirelessly give their time. I have a big belief na this is only the start and I’m so excited to see where Beach Hut goes!”

Her teammate, Goalkeeper, Inna Palacios, talked about how important it was to have events like these to help build the football community and become a platform to develop talents for the international level. [MOU1] “Maybe one day we will see one of these girls represent the country for beach football and it all starts in a small community like this. So hopefully this really goes on every year and we’d be so happy to be back!”

Meanwhile, Team Captain of the Women’s National Football Team, Hali Long, shared a message for aspiring footballers, highlighting the value of believing in the process of improvement, having fun, and teamwork.

“Just be proud of yourself and be better each and every time you come out. It’s also a team sport no matter how old you are” she said. “Always have your teammates back no matter what!”.

Beach Hut: Empowering Filipinas, one goal at a time

Beach Hut Sunscreen passionately believes in the Filipina talent in sports and is committed to promoting grassroots women’s football, where it serves as a space where girls further develop their skills. Hence, the brand created Beach Hut FC, the country’s first all-girls football club.

Now in its 5th year, the brand continues its mission to positively impact local communities and empower women athletes in the Philippines by providing scholarship opportunities that allow more young women to get into the sport and even paving the way for collegiate scholarship exposure.

Beach Hut FC scholar, Queenie Magno, said that one of the many perks as a scholar aside from the chance to train with seasoned coaches and travel expense-free for tournaments, is being able to develop sportsmanship: “Kapag naglalaro po kami o nagte-training nagkakaroon po kami ng bonding (We bond every time we play or train),” Queenie shared. “Tapos walang hard feelings kapag nagkaka-talunan kami (There’s no hard feelings whenever we compete),” she added.

The journey as a Beach Hut FC scholar was also very rewarding for Joshper Halili, who initially wanted to retire from football, “Before this, I wanted to quit football, but then Beach Hut, they were like ‘Oh you should join, you should join this beach football’ and that brought my sport back.”

She also shared a message for aspiring women football players, “There’s nothing you have to lose if you try. Just try, just go for it. You think the worst thing that could happen is when you lose – but at least you lose with learnings, with experience. So just try,” Halilli affirmed.

Another Beach Hut FC player, Karia Favis, also expressed her excitement about the Beach Hut initiative and how it helps dismantle stereotypes in football. For her, “football is football” and everyone who enjoys playing should be given a chance to play. “It’s a sport made for everyone,” she added.

Outdoor activities especially in beach settings require an enhanced first line of defense against the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, so throughout the event, Beach Hut put up a Sunscreen Station to ensure that players can have maximum protection and maximum fun through its products that provide 99% protection against UV Rays.

Through its scholarships and Football Festivals, Beach Hut Sunscreen sees a bright future in the local women’s football scene and aims to continue supporting women in the sport by providing opportunities for growth, friendly competition, community, and fun.

  • Empowering Change: Paralympian Adz Dumapong’s Inspiring Journey in New GCash Film

In a world where the odds seem stacked against those with disabilities, Adeline “Adz” Dumapong rises as a beacon of hope and strength. GCash, the Philippines’ leading finance super app, recently unveiled the moving story of this Paralympic champion in their latest GCash Stories film. The short film not only chronicles Adz’s remarkable journey but also shines a much-needed light on the challenges faced by aspiring para-athletes, from financial constraints to a lack of support. Her story is a powerful reminder of what it takes to triumph in the face of adversity.

Adeline “Adz” Dumapong, 19-time para powerlifting medalist, at the GCash Stories 2024 media launch.

“Adz is a true inspiration,” shares Neil Trinidad, GCash’s Chief Marketing Officer. “Her story is a powerful reminder of the potential in every individual, regardless of their abilities. We hope this film sparks a conversation about the need for inclusion and progress, especially for the community of persons with disabilities.”

    A Hero’s Journey Begins

The film opens in the year 2000, where we see Adz receiving life-changing news: she’s qualified to compete internationally. Yet, the joy of this achievement is quickly met with the daunting task of raising funds to make it happen. With relentless determination, Adz tirelessly makes cold calls, seeking support. Thanks to the generosity of various agencies and individuals, she not only competes on the world stage but also brings home the Philippines’ first-ever Paralympic bronze medal. It’s a victory that not only elevates her but also serves as a triumph for all Filipino athletes with disabilities.

Fast forward to today, Adz remains deeply committed to giving back. Despite the challenges in securing sponsorships for grassroots para-athletes, she never falters. Instead, she turns to GCash, leveraging its platform to raise much-needed financial support for non-national team para-athletes. Through this, she hopes to inspire others to dream big and aim high, just as she did.

    Championing Para-Athletes

Born in the serene town of Kiangan, Ifugao, Adz’s life took a drastic turn when she contracted polio at the tender age of three, leaving her unable to walk. While staying at Bahay Mapagmahal, a home for children with disabilities, she discovered para-powerlifting with the help of the Rehab Department of the Philippine Orthopedic Center. This discovery ignited a passion that led her to make history as the Philippines’ first Paralympic medalist, winning bronze in Sydney. Over the years, Adz has amassed 19 international medals, proving that disability is no barrier to greatness.

But Adz’s legacy goes far beyond the medals she’s earned. She is a fierce advocate for para-athletes, joining various initiatives that call for equal opportunities, inclusion, and fair recognition for persons with disabilities (PWD). Her story is a testament to the human spirit’s resilience, and she continues to inspire countless individuals, both within and outside the PWD community.

From Paralympic champion to passionate advocate, Adz Dumapong’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Now retired from competitive sports, she remains dedicated to empowering the PWD community. Her involvement with WOWLEAP, Inc., a women-led organization, has deepened her understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities. As the Project Manager at WOWLEAP, Adz leads initiatives that promote inclusivity, economic independence, and social awareness for partner communities.

“As an athlete with a disability, I thought I fully understood the challenges of our sector,” shares Adz. “But my work with WOWLEAP opened my eyes even more to the broader needs of the community. It reminded me that the world is bigger than sports, and there’s so much more we need to do in terms of education and understanding the struggles of persons with disabilities. Now, I’m more motivated to help my community and hope that through my work, I can reach more women with disabilities across the country.”

Beyond her role at WOWLEAP, Inc., Adz actively participates in various community initiatives. She is regularly invited to sports clinics, workshops, schools, and other gatherings as a resource person to talk about disability sensitivity, resilience, and inclusion. Her unwavering commitment to empowering the PWD community makes her a true inspiration to many.

GCash’s Commitment to Financial Inclusion and Support

Inspired by Adz’s story, GCash is stepping up its commitment to financial inclusion and progress for all, particularly the PWD community. The finance super app has partnered with organizations that support persons with disabilities to drive meaningful change. To kickstart its initiatives, GCash has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Council for Disability Affairs (NCDA) to champion an inclusive workplace where persons with disabilities can thrive. This partnership further solidifies GCash’s dedication to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I), with a pledge to integrate comprehensive policies, innovative programs, and accessible spaces for persons with disabilities by 2025.

  • Of Mud And Suds: How ‘Cycles Of Care’ Rebuilt Carina-hit Communities With Clean Clothes

Of Mud And Suds: How ‘Cycles Of Care’ Rebuilt Carina-hit Communities With Clean Clothes

When Super Typhoon Carina hit the Philippines, many areas in the Greater Manila Area were submerged in heavy floodwater. Grace Remodano was one of the many Filipinos who had to be rescued in Tondo, Manila during the onslaught of the typhoon. She recounted how they couldn’t leave their house because the flooding was so severe, describing it as being ‘higher than a person’s height,’ with water levels that reached well above their heads. “Lahat ng gamit namin nabasa (all of our things got wet in the flood). Ang hirap po talaga (it was so hard for us),” Grace said.

Super Typhoon Carina families avail of Ariel Philippines’ free laundry services in Save5 Tambunting

This was a common sight in many areas in the Greater Metro Manila. Super Typhoon Carina brought on torrential rains and strong winds to different parts of the Philippines, forcing thousands of Filipinos to evacuate their homes because of the rising floods. Many experienced power outages, water disruptions, and mild to severe damages to their homes due to the calamity. About 4.8 million individuals were affected with 108,000 people still in evacuation centers as of this week.   In aid of restoring normalcy to the lives of affected families, Ariel, Procter and Gamble’s trusted laundry brand, launched the “Cycles of Care” community program to provide relief by offering free laundry services to those affected by Super Typhoon Carina. In partnership with Save5 Laundromat and Beko Washing Machine Brand, the multi-day event served over 13,000 families who needed clean clothes, beddings and blankets for their homes.

“Through Ariel’s “Cycles of Care” free laundry services, we are helping affected families restore normalcy in their lives and homes by providing access to clean clothes and beddings that were stained and muddy from the floods. This is especially needed by those without access to clean water and electricity after the typhoon. Ariel Laundry Detergent is great at stain removal and is a trusted laundry detergent for washing machines,” said Ralph Morales, Ariel Philippines Brand Director.

Ariel Philippines collaborated with Save5  Laundromat to activate 100 Save5 branches in this relief program. The partnership recorded over 27,000 washing machine cycles and  over 216,000 kgs of stained, soiled and muddied clothes washed and cleaned using Ariel Laundry Detergent across the participating branches.

“Ariel’s “Cycles of Care” is a meaningful way to help communities that were affected by Super Typhoon Carina. P&G and Ariel Philippines’ generosity and dedication to helping the community during these challenging times are truly inspiring,” said Ryan Lim, Save5 Laundromat President.

Families from Barangay Tumana, Marikina City gather for Ariel Cycles of Care’s free laundry services in partnership with Beko.

Beko provided washing machines that were used for the free laundry services in Barangay Tumana, Marikina City. This community is one of the heavily flooded areas in the city due to the overflowing of the Marikina River. “We’re happy that we were able to help ease the worries of Marikeños through Ariel’s “Cycles of Care” where we use Ariel Liquid Detergent, our trusted laundry brand for our washing machines,” said Ghie Papa, Beko Philippines Brand Communications Manager.

One of the beneficiaries of happily carrying out a basket of clean clothes and sheets that were washed with Ariel Laundry Detergent.

Several residents who availed Ariel’s free laundry services left the participating laundromats with grateful smiles on their faces while carrying their baskets of clean clothes. “Nakatipid po kami sa paglalaba sa tulong ng Ariel (we were able to save money and time with the help of Ariel). Ang laki po ng pasasalamat namin (we can’t thank them enough),” Grace said. Another affected resident Eden San Diego, who also lives in Tondo, Manila added that Ariel’s “Cycles of Care” was a huge help for her family as they can now focus on cleaning their houses.

By providing access to clean clothes and blankets in the aftermath of calamities like Super Typhoon Carina, restoring a sense of normalcy and providing comforts of home to affected families allows them to focus on rebuilding their lives.

P&G also stepped up as a Force for Good in the community by donating its trusted health and hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, and diapers to affected cities, barangays, and evacuation centers. These donations were facilitated through collaborations with government and non-governmental organizations such as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Philippine Red Cross (PRC), Manila Water Foundation, World Vision Philippines, and the GMA Kapuso Foundation.

1 Metro cover ft. PLDT Home Ambassador Chelsea Manalo by Dookie Ducay

Chelsea impressed the whole nation with her performance in Miss Universe Philippines’ swimwear and eveningwear segments. But it was her Q&A about overcoming restrictive beauty standards that captured the hearts of Filipinos and ultimately secured her the win.

Speaking to Metro.Style, Chelsea candidly talks about being away from her family in Bulacan, especially now that her Miss Universe journey is running at full speed. A lesson that she learned from her Miss Universe Philippines stint is the importance of maintaining connections with loved ones.

“(I always) value the time with the people who are really close to my heart,” she tells Metro.Style. • First Ever Modified Eco-Friendly Tourist Rest Area to rise in Bicol Region

First Ever Modified Eco-Friendly Tourist Rest Area to rise in Bicol Region

The Department of Tourism (DOT) marked a significant advancement for Bicol’s tourism sector with the groundbreaking and signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the region’s inaugural Tourist Rest Area (TRA), led by Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and Tabaco City Mayor Cielo Krisel Lagman.

Main Photo Memorandum of Agreement MOA for the construction

This was the first TRA in the Philippines to receive the modifications of the flagshiptourist facility being constructed by the DOT, through the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) across strategic locations, with features of solar panel roofing, a rainwater harvesting system, among other eco-friendly features.

The ceremonies took place on Wednesday (July 31) at the picturesque Hiraya Manawari Nature Park, which boasts stunning views of the iconic Mayon Volcano.

This pioneering TRA in the region will serve as a comprehensive service center, providing an array of amenities designed to ensure visitor comfort and convenience. Key features will include clean restrooms, charging stations, a relaxing lounge, a lactation room, and an information hub. The facility will also cater to the needs of differently abled individuals and senior citizens, promoting accessibility for all.

    Commitment to Sustainability

Secretary Frasco emphasized that the establishment of the TRA reflects the Department’s dedication to enhancing the tourist experience while prioritizing sustainability.

“Tabaco City is a symbol of sustainable tourism, in line with the National Tourism Development Plan which underscores the importance of preserving our destinations and empowering local communities through tourism,” she stated.

“Tabaco City represents sustainable tourism, which very well resonates with the National Tourism Development Plan of the national government, kung saan binibigyan po natin ng kahalagahan ‘yong preservation ng ating mga destinations, and of course, binibigyan natin ang ating mga komunidad ng opportunities para naman po mag improve ‘yong kanilang buhay sa pamamagitan ng turismo,” the tourism chief shared.

Apart from the enhanced interiors, the TRA incorporates modified sustainable features like the rainwater harvesting system, which is fitting to Bicol region, one of the country’s regions that receives a high amount of rainfall due to its geographical location and other factors.

The TRA is part of a broader national strategy led by the Marcos administration to bolster tourism infrastructure and enhance visitor convenience throughout the Philippines.

“We are hopeful that the presence of the Tourist Rest Area will enhance the vibrancy of your city and the already successful tourism programs led by your mayor. We find that through tourism, communities are transformed, lives are uplifted, and love of country is engendered in each and every single Filipino,” the tourism chief added.

The TRA in Tabaco City marks the second facility to be broken ground this year, with plans to put up at over 20 additional locations funded by TIEZA.

The location, Hiraya Manawari Nature Park, also exemplifies Tabaco City’s commitment to environmental conservation, with many of its structures constructed from upcycled materials.

Partnership for a Sustainable Tourist Rest Area

Alongside the groundbreaking, the DOT and the City Government of Tabaco formalized their partnership through the signing of a MOA for the TRA’s construction.

Fully funded by the DOT through TIEZA, the TRA will be managed and operated by the City Government of Tabaco.

The MOA was signed by Secretary Frasco, Mayor Lagman, and TIEZA OIC Assistant Chief Operating Officer Jeoffrey Macalalad, with Albay Vice Governor Glenda Ong Bongao, and DOT Regional Office V Director Herbie Aguas as witnesses.

The DOT has also devised guidelines for the TRA’s maintenance and operation, offering incentives to LGUs that meet the outlined standards. These incentives may include support for additional infrastructure projects or financial rewards.

A scale model of the TRA, featuring its distinctive flat roof and clean lines, was presented by Secretary Frasco and to Mayor Lagman and Vice Mayor Bongao.

Recently, the TRA project was honored as the Infrastructure Project of the Year in the Tourism category at the esteemed GovMedia Conference and Awards 2024 held in Singapore.

  • Chapel of the Arcangels Now Open at Opus Mall

Chapel of the Arcangels Now Open at Opus Mall

Human life from its beginning until death is surrounded by angels’ watchful care and intercession. “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.”  This is given light and elaborated on in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, (CCC 336). Suffice it to say that the angels play an important role in salvation history and our life of faith.

    1

Among the angels, three are referred to as the Archangels who occupy the highest domains of this angelic hierarchy. Though they have tasks similar to those of the common angels, they have been given specific tasks and duties that suggest their importance. In general, the tasks of these Archangels include contemplation of God, communication of His Will to man in various ways, inspiration for human beings, and catalysts of divine grace for them. All three names of the Archangels end with the word “El”, which means “God”. “Mica-el” means “who is like God.” “Gabri-el” means “God is strong.” “Rapha-el” means “God heals.” God is inscribed in their names, in their nature. Their true nature exists for God and is oriented to God alone.

    2

Thus, Robinsons Land through the guidance of Fr. Ricky Montanez, former parish priest of San Roque Parish in Bagumbayan, Quezon City and Fr. Ron Roberto, Director of the Diocesan Ministry for Liturgical Affairs (DMLA), Diocese of Cubao has chosen to name the Opus chapel in honour of these heavenly messengers. This is a reminder that we too can and should be God’s messengers, like Gabriel. We are to be bringers of God’s consolation and concern to our wearied brothers and sisters in trying times, like Raphael. Finally, like Michael, we are called to emulate him in fighting for the good (and defending the truth) and in ensuring that God reigns in every heart of all believers.

The Chapel of the Archangels located at the 6th level of Opus is under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cubao and under the care of San Roque Parish, Bagumbayan Quezon City.  Father Ricky Montanez and Father Ron Roberto, in response to the duty of their respective offices have closely monitored the chapel’s development, ensuring everything from the placement of the tabernacle to the positioning of the statues of the saints, the archangels and the other important fixtures of the chapel. This Chapel has also been granted permission by his Most Reverend Honesto F. Ongtioco, D.D. Bishop of Cubao, to keep a tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament.

As it has a seating capacity of around 250-300 persons, there is an outside seating provision for other mass attendees in the garden area. Daily masses will be celebrated from Monday to Saturday at 12:15 PM and a vigil mass (anticipated mass) at 6:00 PM on Saturdays. There will be four (4) masses at 11 AM, 12:30 PM, 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Sundays. The Chapel of the Archangels was blessed by Bishop Honesto “Nes” Ongtioco himself last July 10, 2024.

  • The Rise of Podfluencers: Shaping the Philippine Podcast Landscape on Spotify

The Rise of Podfluencers: Shaping the Philippine Podcast Landscape on Spotify

In the past half-decade, the Philippines has witnessed a significant surge in the popularity of podcasts, transforming this digital platform into a cultural phenomenon. The rapid expansion of podcasting on Spotify has not only introduced a diverse array of content but also given rise to a new breed of influencers: the “podfluencers”. As of now, the number of podcasters in the Philippines has increased more than tenfold in just five years, a clear indicator of this burgeoning trend.

    A New Era of Influence

Podcasting’s exponential growth on Spotify reflects a shifting landscape where traditional media is being complemented by more personalized and direct forms of communication. Filipino podfluencers are at the forefront, capturing 72% of all podcast consumption in the country. This local dominance is a testament to their ability to resonate deeply with Filipino audiences.

James Caraan, one-fifth of The KoolPals, a leading comedy podcast on Spotify, shares his experience: “Spotify has been a big help in enabling us to reach a wider audience. Spotify not only made podcasting accessible to more Filipinos, but it also took us to another level of “funny”. Podcasting made our jokes resonate with more comedy fans, enabling us to reach those searching for alternative forms of entertainment.” The KoolPals have grown almost 2.5 times from the past year, and even saw a successful turnout of nearly 1,500 fans, as they celebrated their fifth anniversary in May.

    Diverse Voices, Diverse Topics

The growth of podcasting has also been fueled by its ability to embrace a wide range of topics and perspectives. From gripping discussions on current events to lighter takes on everyday life, podcasts are increasingly seen as a credible alternative to traditional media. According to Spotify’s latest Culture Next Report, nearly two-thirds of listeners find podcasts more trustworthy, primarily because they represent a broader spectrum of voices and viewpoints.

Creators like Gift Boiser and Nicole Andersson are prime examples of podfluencers who are diversifying the content landscape. Gift’s podcast, named Spotify Philippines’ Top New Solo Podcast of 2023, connects with young audiences on a personal level, discussing everything from school life to romance. “It makes me feel fulfilled reading messages from my listeners saying they can relate to the topics and stories I share. It’s fascinating to know people are going through similar experiences as me. I want my listeners to feel like I’m their friend whom they can casually chat with about anything — school, friendship, our crushes, and more,” says Boiser.

Meanwhile, Nicole Andersson, one of the OG fashion bloggers in the country, has ventured into podcasting with her show Solo Flight Podcast. Not a stranger to sharing bits and pieces of herself online, Nicole now extends her platform to a more intimate audio format, engaging her audience in conversations beyond fashion. “Many of my viewers from my vlog have been urging me to start a podcast, but I never felt ready — until now. This year, I have finally launched my podcast, sharing conversations I find healing, with the hope of helping others. Podcasting allows me to be more vulnerable and delve into topics on a deeper level, unlike other platforms where conversations feel rushed,” Nicole Andersson shares.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Philippine Podcasting

As we usher in this new era of podcasting, it’s clear that creators on Spotify are not just participating in culture but actively driving it. Their deeply engaged audiences are a testament to the compelling nature of their content and the personal connections they foster.

For those eager to dive deeper into the dynamic world of Filipino podcasting, stay tuned to Spotify’s For The Record: Podcasts for the latest updates and insights.

As the podcast landscape continues to evolve, listeners are encouraged to explore the rich tapestry of content available.
