  • REVIEW: The first season of ‘Fallout’ is crazy good, with an emphasis on crazy

I know nothing about the video game ‘Fallout,’ which is the basis for the new 8-episode series on Amazon Prime with the same name, created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Not knowing the source material meant coming in completely blank and was very much pleasantly surprised at what I saw. ‘Fallout’ is a post-apocalyptic satire in a world driven mad by the destruction of the planet. Resources are limited, the powerful exercise authority by strength and fear, while those with available supplies keep it to themselves. The nuclear fallout (probably where the show gets its name) means that the world is irradiated; mutants abound, food is scarce, and no one can be trusted.

    https://youtu.be/V-mugKDQDlg?si=4TgXarYYCERAPTgY

The show follows the lives of three main characters: Lucy (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins). Lucy comes from the vault, a portion of the human race who were able to escape the ravages of the nuclear war that has kept them safe and well fed in the huge underground bunkers prepared way before the war broke out. But the population is thinning and living in the bunker has kept them safe but naive and sheltered. Maximus lives above ground, a trainee who is training to be a squire for one of the knights of The Brotherhood. The knights wear powerful suits of armor and while they are poised to be a sort of protective authority they’ve devolved into bullies. The Ghoul is a bounty hunter, and due to the effects of radiation poisoning (and whatever else), he regenerates quickly and has lived over 200 years.

The three lead characters are all crazy in their own way and through their lens, we see how satire of ‘Fallout’ plays out in the ways it questions authority, kindness (in a soulless world), hope, and civilization when everything has been torn apart.

Fallout Walton Goggins as The Ghoul in Fallout Large

The show is violent and gory, and it revels in that imagery. It is constantly reminding you that this idea of the world is an ugly one and a brutal one and it is not afraid to show it. Luckily, the film is scarce on gratuitous sex and nudity. When it has (and it’s very few) it used for its full effect and is never seen or felt as objectifying its characters. It’s a welcome change from other shows.

    Fallout PV Fallout 2 Large

The satire comments on the way the world’s harshness and how one must act to survive in such a world is a mirror to the world we live in today. As the show’s reality is situated with the nuclear disaster happening in the 60s or 70s, it means the technology is from that time – clunky, heavy, analog – which creates interesting visual textures that helps highlight the overall conservative moral values of the people at The Vault (Lucy’s world) and how that counterpoints with the values of the tattered world above the ground. The old school vibe amplifies the way the world has gone bonkers and the low-tech, lo-fi way by which technology is presented gives us a feel that the world has never gone to a level of sophistication that can afford better values. In Maximus’ world, The Brotherhood have metal armor, high powered weapons, and futuristic helicopters, but everyone is aggressive and a bully. There are tradeoffs here and it helps show the rich world building of the show.

Fallout Power Armor Suits in Fallout Large
    Power Armor Suits in “Fallout”

The plot is exciting and thrilling but it’s the world-building of ‘Fallout’ that really hooks you in. You want to see how this world deals with situations. It’s cynical and jadedness that when Lucy brings in her naivety and innocence to a predicament, it really shines bright and how it reflects and bounces off Maximus or The Ghoul. I’d like to see more of this should the show be greenlit for a second season.

Fallout Walton Goggins as The Ghoul in Fallout 2 Large
Walton Goggins (The Ghoul) in “Fallout”

One of my only gripes is the show is over scored. It likes to violate every scene with a classic song from the 60s (maybe even older) and while it is charming in the first few episodes, by episode 5, it’s overdone. It can get annoying and distracting pretty quickly.

    Fallout

There’s a lot that this show can cover, and I love the twists and turns of this first season. Yes, it’s jaded and cynical, but it surprisingly offers a lot of hope too (as it reaches the finale of the first season). And it has an interesting enough cliff-hanger of an ending that makes me want to see more and more of this world. A world destroyed by nuclear war is nothing new so it may have to rehash certain situations that we may have seen in other platforms and media but the characters it has introduced are engaging and its subversive anti-corporation messages are read loud and clear.

I want a second season. I want to see how much crazier this show can get.

    My Rating:

    2. 5 Reasons Why Watching ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ is Your Next Mission

If you have been scrolling on social media lately, you have probably caught wind of a new Mr. & Mrs. Smith being made. Well, the first season just dropped on Prime Video! Now a series, this version takes inspiration from the original movie starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Co-creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane came up with an update to the original messaging and offers a unique take on this marriage between two lethal spies. As the series’ poster hints, this version indeed hits differently, and here are a few reasons why:

      1. Engage on Bite-Sized Thrills with Binge-Worthy Length

Just like any movie, the original ran for more or less two hours. The first season of the series, on the other hand, unfolds across eight 45-minute episodes. Francesca Sloane, co-creator of the reimagined series, said “We really wanted to sort of lean into the perspective of the vulnerability of a relationship and kind of follow that in terms of being the antithesis of sort of a Bond-type film in terms of the way we normally see spies. And so as we were talking about that, that’s when I was like, “Oh, that’s something I can sink my teeth into, that can get really weird. That’s a show that I could definitely do.”

Each installment gives its audience-focused action and interesting character development, allowing space to savor the intricacies of the plot to truly connect with John and Jane. Expect simmering tension, surprising twists, and a microscopic look at the couple’s dynamics and you’ll find yourself constantly wanting “just one more episode.”

      3 1

      2. Marriage: More Action-Packed Than You Think

Co-creator Donald Glover elevates the narrative of the series by giving more than the typical action film and diving deep into the complexities of marriage. Compared to the original movie, watching the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith isn’t just about two assassins trying to outsmart each other. The creators’ vision is to explore “Why do people get married? Why do people partner up? And it’s because it’s just harder to do things alone.” Glover and Sloane’s vision adds emotional depth, making John and Jane more than just spies. We get to see their vulnerability, their fears, and their desires, giving the viewers enough bandwidth to foster empathy which results in a more compelling narrative.

      5

      3. Redefining Roles, Exposing Characters

According to Glover, “John really wants to be a hero. He likes being the superhero type. Because he probably saw his dad do that on some level. But also I think he just craves structure.” But as time passes, his facade starts to crumble, slowly revealing vulnerability and self-doubt. Despite all his resistance, he learns to rely on Jane, highlighting that even the seemingly strong characters can admit that things are easier when you have a partner.

Jane is a juxtaposition to John’s character. Maya Erskine who plays Jane reveals, “Jane is someone who has come from a really broken family, a broken background, and is not very trusting of this world. And she’s a person who’s not trusting, entering a partnership that’s fully based on trust. And it’s something that she has to learn and sort of uncover and really become vulnerable and learn to rely on another person, which she hasn’t done her whole life, which I think she gets to at a certain point in this series. And it’s really fun to see her open up in that way.” A few episodes in, Jane slowly evolves, she starts to open up and allows herself to be vulnerable around John – adding a layer of emotional complexity to the story. Their opposing personalities and journeys toward self-discovery are a captivating push-and-pull dynamic that keeps you invested.

      4

      4. Witness Female Power Behind the Scenes and On the Screen

With a writing team mostly comprised of females, the Mr. & Mrs. Smith series redefines “hotness” both in narrative and visual storytelling. We are bidding goodbye to the days of thigh-high slits defining female allure. Here, attractiveness is beyond the physical by showing emotional depth, strength, and intelligence. The female gaze of the writers directly challenges conventional tropes, presenting Jane not as objects of desire but as a multifaceted individual with her own agency and power. Just wait for the “hot neighbor” moment and you’ll see what we’re talking about.

      2 1

      5. Letting Love Fuel The Fire…and the Mess

Just like in the original version, John and Jane start spiraling out of control when they realize that feelings are now involved. Sloane as the co-creator reveals the main conflict, “John starts to feel like he is diminished in his role. He feels maybe even emasculated by the fact that Jane is constantly saving his butt. So it’s this notion of, like any relationship, if two people are living together, working together, doing the exact same profession, there’s a competition that starts to come. Then that therefore wears down on the love. Not only that, they start to realize that they want different things.

Jane is really encouraged by sort of living this fast-paced, very exciting life, and John starts admitting to her that he wants a family and that’s something really important to him, just like any relationship except they’re high-risk spies and assassins.

So what does that conversation look like when you want to have children? John starts sort of pulling away. Jane starts sort of spiraling, and we watch these two fall in love to get to a point where they are now at odds. Just like in the film, where they now have to kill each other because they’ve become a liability to the company, things get messy, and it takes us to the end of the season where these two may actually have to take each other out. Will they do it or won’t they? That’s sort of the question by the end of the season.”

      1 1

It’s bloody, it’s messy, and watching the reprised series will keep you at the edge of your seats, repeatedly asking yourself, “Will they or won’t they?”

With its binge-able format and unique take on modern relationships, the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith is not just an action-packed rehash. So, forget the mindless scrolling and watch as this captivating story of love, betrayal, and espionage unravels – get invested in the journey of John and Jane Smith as they redefine the meaning of partnership in a world of secrets and lies. Watch the first eight episodes, available on Prime Video starting February 2, 2024!

Mr. & Mrs. Smith joins thousands of other shows and films available on the Prime Video catalog, such as Linlang, In My Mother’s Skin, Takeshi’s Castle, Simula sa Gitna, Comedy Island Philippines, Rookie, Ten Little Mistresses, Cattleya Killer, and Fit Check: Confessions of an Ukay Queen. 5. REVIEW: The spellbinding allure of ‘Saltburn’

Film is, first and foremost, a visual medium. For this alone, writer and director Emerald Fennell’s second full-length feature ‘Saltburn’ is a delectable banquet for the eyes. It’s luscious cinematography and production design fill each frame with something gorgeous to look at: if not the extravagant excess of the British mansion Saltburn, for which the film takes its name, than the beautiful faces and bodies of its characters, most notably that of its lead stars Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi. Fennell pushes for a lot of earth tones and through the lens of cinematographer Linus Sandgren, manages to turn the skin tone of all the actors into exquisite textures. Every freckle, every strand of body hair, every drop of sweat that trickle down on any of the performer’s skin becomes a tantalizing, arousing spectacle that highlights this tale of obsession and of excess.

I wonder what ‘Saltburn’ would look like in the cinema – the luscious cinematography and production design projected in a giant cinema screen – rather than my little iPad screen as I stream the film on Amazon Prime Video. The delicious excess and indulgences that Fennell delivers in her 131-minute psychological drama feels like it is bursting out of the tiny screen of my iPad. There’s a bigness in the world that Fennell creates in ‘Saltburn’ that feels claustrophobic when seen in such a small screen. The effect in the big screen must be so different.

While there’s a masterful use of visual language, the story that inhabits this visual treat is a bit harder to swallow. It’s a tale of obsession, for sure, as Barry Keoghan’s Oliver finds himself alone in Oxford in 2006. Feeling like an outcast, he manages to befriend Jacob Elordi’s Felix Catton, a popular boy in school. He’s handsome and rich and everyone flocks around him. The less privileged Oliver feels invisible but by Felix’s side, a bond is formed.

It’s so strong that Felix invites him to his British mansion Saltburn for the summer. And it is here that the mind games begin. Felix’s sister, Virginia, is outed as a sexual misfit and Oliver catches her walking just under his window of his room late at night in a see-through lingerie. Felix’s cousin, Farleigh never stops putting Oliver in his place, reminding him constantly that he does not belong in that world. Felix’s parents attempt at being cool and progressive but are unable to hide their elitist prejudices and fragile fears.

All of this proves to be too tempting for Oliver, who begins to entrench himself into the Catton household and the schemes and plans start to unfold.

As a social commentary, ‘Saltburn’ seems to have a lot to say about the British class divide, but there’s a fantastical, almost fanfiction like approach to how Fennell depicts British aristocracy. There’s no grounding element here – what is present is an idea of upper-class excess and indulgences. The Catton parents – played by Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant – are the type of people who’ll throw a 200-guest party for their son’s friend, whom they only met that week. They live in a castle that replaces a broken mirror the very next day that it is destroyed. Each character living in that house is broken and are either in denial that they are ruined to the core or completely oblivious to it.

      Saltburn on Prime

This is the sort of innocence that makes the upper class in ‘Saltburn’ so despicable and somehow allows you to keep your eyes glued to the screen as Oliver twists and turns this family inside and out. The family is unaware of their effect on the world around them and even with all their good intentions, they seem unaware of the damage that they do and Fennell understands our need to sympathise with these people, because in truth, Fennell posits that, like Oliver, we want their level of excess. It makes us curious. It arouses us. We hate them. We hate this world, but we are also very much fascinated by it.

It’s what makes ‘Saltburn’ not an easy film to digest. It’s a visual treat but it’s also overwritten but it connects with all our basic desires – whether it is wealth, power, or beauty – which is represented by the Cattons. It’s why sex becomes a focal point of the film, it’s primal and without reason. It’s infused in the film’s visual language, and in the way the camera is obsessed with the physicality’s of its characters. So, while the story and even lines of dialogue is meant to shock you – sometimes even in ways that are so obviously scripted or staged and not at all organic – it is still something you cannot take your eyes off of.

Unfortunately, there is a big narrative twist at the end, one that is clunkily handled. The reveal is on-the-nose, and its lack of cleverness finishes the film on a sour note (though saved by its visually stunning final image). ‘Saltburn’ is bold and daring and brave; a true scintillating visual treat that serves as a mirror of our ugliest desires in relation to beauty and wealth and power. It’s not an easy film to watch but it is spellbinding in its allure.

      My Rating:

      stars 3 0

    6. What’s New with Drag Den with Manila Luzon Season Two: Retribution?

A year since the premiere of the sensational hit Filipino show Drag Den with Manila Luzon comes its much-awaited follow-up: Drag Den with Manila Luzon Season Two: Retribution.  Prime Video’s first renewal of local content in Southeast Asia, premieres January 18, 2024, in the Philippines and 240 countries and territories worldwide with a new episode released every week.

Producer CS Studios, series creator and director Rod Singh, and showrunner Antoinette Jadaone of Project 8 Projects are back to creatively helm the show to another successful run. Fans can also be assured of returning hosts Manila Luzon, Nicole Cordoves, and Sassa Gurl.

So what’s new to look forward to in the show’s sophomore season?

      Here’s what’s new:

      1. New Season
      IMG 8500 Main Throne

      There’s a new story.

Drag Den with Manila Luzon’s first season explored the origins of the drag cartel and emphasized the inclusion of local drag queens in the judging panel — a significant moment in the world of drag competitions on TV. It also marked the introduction of a “no eliminations” format. In season 2, the competition officially begins, as contestants compete for the title of the next Pinoy Drag Supreme.

Season 1 of Drag Den with Manila Luzon was characterized by themes and language that were geared toward Filipino audiences. In a similar vein, season 2 of the show will showcase cultures and art forms that are both foreign and shared but still resonate with Filipino sensibilities. By doing so, the show hopes to influence Filipino culture and create subcultures that are uniquely Filipino.

      2. New Den

      IMG 8433 Alley

The drag cartel has moved to a new den with three parts for season 2 – the alley, arcade, and mainstage. It’s a mix of steampunk and cyberpunk, and promises to be a more intense and psychedelic experience compared to season 1.

      3. New Game

      IMG 8487 Main Stage

Elimination happens after every episode. Manila walks with the eliminated queen, giving them a supportive message.

The Main Drag Showdown can be on any stage.

The Dragdagulan winner gets immunity from elimination and competes in a three-way lipsync battle chosen by drawing lots.

      4. New Rules

      IMG 8415 monitor

The Drag Cartel now includes 4-5 judges and Season 1 queens as Drag Agents on duty. Three sexy men, the Bagmen, also join the group.

      5. New Judges

      IMG 8732 Cartel Judges

Yeng Constantino, Bini, Rufa Mae Quinto, Alaska Thunderfuck, Alodia Gosengfiao, Andrea Brillantes, and Dolly de Leon add glimmer to the show as enlisted judges or “Guest Drag Enforcers” for every competition episode.

      6. New Songs

A new main theme song is coming! The previous season’s theme song was so catchy that it became an earworm. The new song, called “Pom Pom” (Take Me High), is performed by Manila Luzon featuring Sassa Gurl. It will be available on various digital music platforms in January. The song was written by Silas, produced by Rod Singh and Silas, and released by UMG Philippines under Republic Records.

In addition, the Season Two Drag Den Queens will be releasing their song called “Sustah”. It will also be available on digital music platforms in January. The song was written by Kumareng Harvey and Silas, produced by Rod Singh and Silas, and released by CS Music.

Drag Den with Manila Luzon Season Two: Retribution will be available for streaming worldwide starting January 18, 2024, on Prime Video. Drag Den with Manila Luzon is also now on Prime Video, along with thousands of amazing titles – all for only Php 149 per month.
