  • REVIEW: Action and gore coupled with family drama, ‘Kill Boksoon’ has it all

The film opens with a campy scene of a Yakuza member waking up on a bridge construction site beside train tracks and a woman in a nurse’s outfit is waiting for him. The woman is Gil Boksoon, a lethal assassin and the Yakuza member is her target. There is a tongue-in-cheek bit of dialogue that takes its time but helps give us the feel and tone of this movie – it’s fun, irreverent, and hard-hitting. The action sequence that follows is exciting and thrilling, especially when it takes the camera angle from across the train tracks and as a train passes by, the fight scene appears like a slideshow, captured in between the train windows. We see Gil Boksoon’s competence and the Yakuza member’s skill and it’s a fantastic watch. It prepares us for what is to come.

Because while the movie is about a lethal assassin, who may be past her prime, she is also a single mother of a teenage girl and she has to juggle both in order to live. There’s a line in the movie Kill Boksoon that really summarizes this incredible film: “Killing people is easier than raising a kid.” It’s the whole foundation of this movie and betrays the sheer duality of this story. On one hand, it’s a slick, glossy action and suspense movie about an assassin but it is also, on equal measure, an interesting family drama about a mother and her teenage daughter who cannot connect with each other because of the secrets that they keep.

At the center of all of this is Gil Boksoon, played by Jeon Do-yeon. Jeon Do-yeon is magnificent in the role. You can see it in her eyes and her gait: she loves being good at her job, she loves being admired by other assassins. It’s the exact opposite of how she is when her daughter is around. She’s insecure, unsure of herself. The contrast is so striking but very believable.

Jeon Do-yeon manages a balancing act of the two tonal shifts of the movie; at one end, it’s a campy assassin movie, with hard-hitting fight choreography and lots of blood and gore but at the same time, it is a family drama. Interestingly enough, there is nothing corny about Kill Boksoon – her relationships with the people around her are practical; she’s not a humble, quiet killer; she enjoys her work and she knows what she is doing is bad as we hear in one of her killer lines as she says, “We know we are going to hell. That’s why we don’t pray.” – and it is in that acceptance, that the movie winks and nods to the audience that tells us to not take it too seriously and that we can still root for her if we want to. She is human and she has fully accepted her choices in life, as horrible as those choices may be.

There is a world here not unlike John Wick and it doesn’t go too deep that it overshadows the heart and soul of the film but it is real enough to make the world not feel so empty or fabricated. That balance allows the movie to play out in two completely different tones – the action thriller and the family drama – both working hand-in-hand to enhance and amplify the other. It is Boksoon’s insecurity about being a mother that is highlighted in comparison to how great she is as a killer, that comparison in inextricably linked, but it is in her learnings from being a mother that she finds herself able to navigate the messy world of her underworld profession, which turns difficult as she reaches the end of her contract.

    Kill Boksoon Review 2
    Photo: Netflix

There is masterful direction here by Byun Sung-hyun, who is unafraid to do jump cuts into the next scene or shift to flashbacks, and other jarring editing techniques and camera angles just to not engage in the peripherals – just like its main character, this movie means business. But despite its technical flourishes, the movie never strays too far from its beating heart.

Coupled with an amazing ensemble backing Jeon Do-yeon, including a standout Koo Gyo-hwan, another assassin with a personal relation to Gil Boksoon, and Kim Si-a, who plays the teenage daughter, Jae-young, ‘Kill Boksoon’ is a really engaging movie that surprised in every turn. It never lingers in the sentimentality and goes straight for the jugular.

  • Q&A with ‘Your Place or Mine’ Stars Reese Witherspoon, Ashton Kutcher & More

This season of romance, Netflix’s latest offering for the romcom movie category is a fun film called Your Place or Mine, headlined by Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher and produced, written, and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna who wrote beloved films such as The Devil Wears Prada and 27 Dresses.

The movie follows Debbie and Peter who are total opposites, but after a one-night stand, they become best friends for years. While Debbie is content with her routine life with her son Jack in LA, Peter’s New York career as a stylish brand consultant thrives in change. When they swap houses and lives for a week, they realize that what they want might not be what they really need.

Netflix recently held a press conference for Your Place or Mine which was joined by McKenna, Witherspoon, and Kutcher, alongside the other stars of the film Wesley Kimmel, who stars as Jack, Debbie’s son, Zoey Chao, who plays Peter’s fashionable ex, Minka, and Jesse Williams, who stars as Debbie’s New York fling, literary editor Theo Martin.

Check out what the creator and cast have to say about the new movie below:

Aline Brosh McKenna on her directorial debut in Your Place or Mine.

After writing successful films and shows, McKenna is now in the director’s chair for the first time. Asked why she chose this story for her directorial debut, McKenna explained that it was very personal to her.

“You know, I was very taken with the story. It was based on personal experience. And I wanted to do a
romantic comedy for people who have been through something in their lives, and have [clears throat] you know, have accumulated some life experience.

    Your Place or Mine 1

“And so, as I was working on that, it just felt very personal to me through the whole process. And it was an
idea I’d had for a long time. And then, when it finally came to fruition, it felt very personal. And then, you know, I like to work with unknowns,” said the director.

    Building Debbie and Peter’s chemistry.

The film’s interesting take on a rom-com is that the two lead characters are rarely with each other, one is in LA while the other is in New York. According to Witherspoon, she panicked because she barely knew her co-star in real life.

“About a month before, I was like, ‘I don’t know this guy, and we’re supposed to be best friends for 20 years.’ So we started sending each other videos every day,” explained the actress.

“Every day, we would send back-and-forth videos of how’s your day going? What’s going on? What’s happening with you? What are you afraid of?” Added Kutcher.

“And it was good. It was really, actually kind of fun. And then our kids would get in the videos and our dogs…” Continued Witherspoon.

As for the filming, the stars revealed that it was “tricky”, the way they shot it from different places and different times, as the other person would shoot first before the other interacted with a filmed scene. This prevented them from doing improv, which they often did when they were doing a scene together.

Ashton Kutcher on Peter’s “grown-up” look and diving into fiction.

According to Kutcher, director McKenna always emphasized Peter’s hair when giving him that “grown-up” look.

“I think it was interesting. It was very much about the hair. Aline had a very particular hairstyle that she felt this character had to have,” explains the actor. “And she used the word ‘grown-up’ a lot. She’s like, ‘I want you have grown-up hair. Grown-up hair.’ I’m like, ‘This is my hair. Like, it is old. It’s 45 years old. It’s the same age as me.’

“But the style and just kind of the put-together essence of the character, I think it was a juxtaposition to kind of the all-over-the-place world of Debbie. So that was fun to play. It’s just this person that had this meticulous [personality], like everything needed to be in its place. The pen needed to be here and the headphones here and then this there.”

    Your Place or Mine 4

The actor also shared how he had to read ten fictional books to prepare for his role as Peter, who is also a novelist.

“I’m not a very big fiction reader. I don’t read a lot of fiction. And [Aline was] like, ‘Yeah, but this character’s a novelist, so he’s gonna be very well-read in fiction.’ And so, I ended up diving in. Aline sent me, I think, like, 10 books prior to the film. She’s like, ‘You need to read all of these.’ And every one of the books had notecards in them about what Peter got from this book, specifically, like, what he got as a writer from this book,” shared Kutcher.

Jesse Williams on being the book editor Theo.

Jesse Williams also shares that his character’s involvement in books is not far from his in real life, having been an English teacher before. “I am an avid reader. I was definitely a reader of fiction until I kind of converted. I stopped reading fiction, became obsessed with non-fiction for the last, maybe, 10 or 15 years. So I’ve kind of been returning to that recently. And, yeah, I did teach, so I love books,” said the actor.

“Books changed my life, particularly in high school. Actually, during this process, Aline was awesome enough; she got me a vintage, signed copy of one of my favorite books ever, which is Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon, which is just an absolute treasure.” Williams added.

    Your Place or Mine 6

Zoe Chao on her character Minka who defies expectations.

According to actress Zoe Chao, she instantly fell in love with Peter’s ex-girlfriend Minka right after reading the script.

“Aline had just made such a surprising, lovable, weirdo on page. And then Sophie De Rakoff brought all these amazing clothes. And then, boom, the character was there. Yeah, I don’t know. I mean, I love Minka because, though you don’t know what she does, there’s, like, a very calculated mystique about her,” Chao explained.

“She is not a sinister person. She’s actually a very positive person. And I think, you know, the ultimate hype-sister and, like, wing woman that you need in this life. And I like that she’s full of contradictions.”

Wesley Kimmel and his similarities with Jack.

Wesley Kimmel revealed that aside from Jack also playing hockey as he does, the character really spoke to him: “Well, that first audition that I had, like, we were reading the script, like, before. We were reading the sides over, like, just get a, like, gist of what was going on.

“And I looked up to my mom, and I was like, ‘This is literally me.’ Like, we had the exact same qualities, the exact same issues, the exact same allergies. And it was just like easy. It was easy to be, like, natural in the audition. It was just crazy.’ Like, we had the exact same qualities, the exact same issues, the exact same allergies. And it was just like easy. It was easy to be, like, natural in the audition. It was just crazy,” said Kimmel.

  • Interview with Jason Momoa & Marlow Barkley of Netflix’s ‘Slumberland’

Aquaman star Jason Momoa and young actress Marlow Barkley are headlining Netflix’s next magical film Slumberland! The film will take viewers to the world of dreams and nightmares, where the girl Nemo who just lost her father in a storm, joins forces with the rough-around-the-edges but lovable outlaw Flip to hunt for a treasure that can make dreams come true.

Watch the trailer for Slumberland below:

Before the film drops on Netflix this November 18, we got to chat with Jason Momoa and Marlow Barkley in virtual roundtable interview where they talked about the new fantasy adventure film. Check out highlights from the interview below:

For Jason Momoa, would you say that you enjoy playing fun characters like Flip more than the serious and intimidating characters you’ve played in the past?

Jason Momoa: Yeah, it’s better for the soul, better for your well-being to be laughing and having fun over being grumpy and fighting all the time. So it’s nice to have some levity.

For Marlow Barkley, do you have any tips for the younger people who might be experiencing the same hardships as Nemo?

Marlow Barkley: I think that making sure to keep the things that make you happy and bring you joy very close to you, and if you can to block out any negative thoughts or ideas I think is very important. And specifically, keep friends close because I find that friends can be very very helpful and inspiring at difficult times. And just remember that any fear, no matter how big, can be overcome as long as you are brave and strong, and I hope they can use Nemo as an inspiration to do that.

    Slumberland 3

What’s an adventure you’ve had in the past that’s beyond your wildest dreams?

Jason Momoa: When I was around 19, one of my biggest dreams was to go to Tibet. I wanted to go backpacking and live with nomads and visit different temples out there. I went to Tibet, and whatever I thought it was gonna be, it was beyond my wildest dreams. And it was truly the only place, it felt like a dream world when I was there.

Marlow Barkley: I’d say, I think I’m living the life– I think I’m going on an adventure beyond my wildest dreams right now. I think that I’m very lucky to be able to do that at such a very young age, and I have Jason and my family and my friends to guide me through that. I think that right now, it’s pretty crazy. I could have never imagined that I would be here right now.

    Slumberland 1

Can you tell us more about your casting, what made you say yes to the project and what was reaction being cast in the film?

Marlow Barkley: I read the script and I definitely knew that I would watch it even though I wasn’t in it. Secretly I was hoping that [I get to do this movie] because it was amazing and it was everything that I wanted in a script and more. It has emotions, and it was funny, and action. And so I really put my all into that audition and it paid off and I think that the time filming it was even better than I could ever imagine.

Jason Momoa: This was pitched to me by director Francis Lawrence who I love and trust, and I just thought it was wonderful, the idea of it. Then I got the script, read it, and you know I cried, I laughed… And then we cast this beautiful lady and it’s a dream job, and it just doesn’t happen very often so I feel very lucky to be part of the film.

    Slumberland

Do you have any memorable moments during filming you’d like to share?

Jason Momoa: We have a lot.

Marlow Barkley: Any blooper is really fun, but there’s this one… We’re filming this very emotional scene, and in between takes we thought it would be a good idea to play tag– but not the kind of tag where you’re running around, chasing each other, and yelling tag. It’s the kind where you stand still, look over at someone, touch them and say tag. That’s it.

And Jason was it, and he did not like to be it. So in the middle of the scene, very emotional, right before the big climax he goes, “And I just want to say tag you’re it, well that didn’t work” and I was like “Dude, why did you think that you can incorporate tag into this emotional scene?” [Laughs] and Francis was like “Uhh, cut? Let’s go back to one.”

Jason Momoa: Yes, we did all kinds of fun stuff. Not long enough for this interview, you’ll see it all in the bloopers.

    Slumberland 2

What do you think are the lessons that both the young audiences and parents can pick up from the film?

Marlow Barkley: I think that kids can learn that they can overcome their fears, no matter how great they are. And that if you have something that’s special to you, and everybody else stops you or underestimates you, hold on to that dream and keep people that you love in your life, and you’ll be able to accomplish even greater dreams, one you could never imagine.

Jason Momoa: I say to reconnect with your inner child. Doesn’t matter how old you are, just have fun and keep that little sparkle alive. Otherwise, what’s the point?

    —
Directed by Francis Lawrence from a script by David Guion and Michael Handelman, Slumberland also stars  Chris O’Dowd, Kyle Chandler, Weruche Opia, India de Beaufort, and Humberly González. Stream it exclusively on Netflix starting this November 18.

  • ‘Doll House’: Baron Geisler, Althea Ruedas, & Director Marla Ancheta Talk About Netflix’s New Drama Film

Soon to join Netflix’s Pinoy gems such as Through Night and Day and My Amanda is a new heartwarming film from director Marla Ancheta titled Doll House.

Starring Baron Geisler and the young Althea Ruedas, this new flick from the Finding Agnes director tells the story of a rock band singer Rustin, who has a troubled past. Due to drug addiction, Rustin abandoned his wife Sheena, and their baby Yumi. Years later in the Netherlands, Rustin finds the opportunity to become Yumi’s babysitter without her knowing about their blood ties, and tries to rekindle their long-lost relationship.

In a recent roundtable interview with the press, director Marla Ancheta, Baron Geisler, and Althea Ruedas talked about how the film took shape.

When the trailer dropped, viewers quickly saw Baron Geisler as fit for his role in the film, having been cast as an antagonist in many shows and films, but it was the hint of a dramatic redemption that really pumped the viewers. According to director Ancheta, the film’s producer suggested that Baron play Rustin, and she was on board with the idea immediately.

“I really want to touch the story of a family, relationship, and of course, since we have these good actors, kailangan maging believable ito na mag-ama kayo… Basically, dun ako mas naka-focus. It’s really more of how to deliver the characters at the same time, nasusundan mo kung paano nagde-develop yung relationship nilang mag-ama,” explained the director.

Geisler also talked about accepting the role: “What’s not to say ‘yes’ to? It’s a big project with Netflix, it’s a worldwide movie, it’s a big-budget film, and it’s a good role,” said Baron. “Now I’m on my knees, praying that I get to sustain this and get more substantial roles like this.”

    Doll House 1

Furthermore, Baron Geisler also shared how the role came at the right time, just a few months after he promised his wife that he’d be in his own Netflix film.

“One time, me and my wife were watching Netflix, A Faraway Land,” says Baron. “I’m a good friend, best friend ko si Paolo Contis. Nagustuhan namin yung pelikula, and then my wife, nakita kong na-sad siya, na parang she wanted something like that for me. And then I said, you know what, one day I’m gonna have a film like that.

“And then I called up Paolo, I said ‘Pao, angganda ng pelikula mo pang-Hollywood! I love you! Congratulations! Walang jealousy to, punong-puno ng gratitude. Then simula nun, dun ako nagkaroon ng revelation na if you have this authentic appreciation for another actor, another film, and I want the same na mangyari sa akin, then God will give it to me, and wala pa yatang dalawang buwan biglang tinawagan ako for this film,” the actor added.

As for Baron’s young co-star Althea, she shares that the atmosphere on set was fun, but at first, she also got nervous when she got the role. “Super nervous and excited po ako nung nalaman ko po na nakuha ko po yung role. Nervous because they’re all big stars na po, mga kasama ko po, pero excited po kasi it’s my first movie in Netflix po kaya thankful po ako kay Papa Jesus na binigay Nya po sakin ‘to,”

Asked about their favorite parts on the film and during the shoot, Althea tells the press: “Ang favorite scenes ko po talaga, yung mga bonding time po nila Yumi and Rusty, kasi talagang hindi po kami nag-aacting nun. Talagang nag-eenjoy lang po kami.”

Baron adds, “One of the best things that really got to me was the father-daughter love story. Me reconnecting with my daughter and the realization that I have a lot of unfinished business in life. And also, masasabi ko na heart and soul din ng movie na ‘to, malaking part si Direk Marla, because she has guided Althea and I all through out.”
