  • Chasing Artistic Calling Beyond the Stage

Chasing Artistic Calling Beyond the Stage

Violinist and music educator Kaya Mendoza, one of the many scholars of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), found her fondness for melodies within the confines of the classroom. Over time, it developed into an intentional pursuit; one that gave her direction, duty, and profound purpose.

    01. CCP Scholar Kaya Mendoza performs with the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth in its New Worlds New Horizons concert last August 2025

Finding the harmony between performing and teaching

As early as nine years old, Mendoza had already been playing the violin, thanks to a group class part of her curriculum at the Kolisko Waldorf School, headed by Ford Pundamiera.

    CCP 2

While finishing her studies at Philippine High School for the Arts in Makiling, Laguna, under the mentorship of Sergio Esmilla and Gina Medina-Perez, Mendoza’s connection with music deepened, finding herself yearning for more. Later on, she pursued music education at the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) and profoundly examined her love for her craft. She is currently a student of Dino Decena.

“It’s just nice to connect with other people through music,” she said, recalling a performance in Kuala Lumpur along with the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth.

Through the years, Mendoza has performed with renowned orchestras, including the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra in 2020 and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra back in 2023. While actively performing in orchestras and freelance engagements, she began sharing her knowledge on music, navigating both spaces with equal passion and commitment.

    CCP 3

When the COVID-19 pandemic halted live performances, Mendoza transitioned to virtual concerts and volunteered in online workshops, such as the CCP’s Hands-On Choral Workshop. She continued to facilitate workshops and classes in person even after the world slowly recovered. “I really wanted to teach. Na-inspire kasi ako sa sarili kong music education and sa mga teachers ko,” said Mendoza.

Performing and playing the violin perfectly filled Mendoza’s innate need to mentor students by sharing her personal experiences. “‘Pag nagpe-perform ka, may natututuhan ka na mapapasa mo sa students,” said Mendoza, who describes herself as a lifelong student of music.

Mendoza’s humble perspective on learning naturally extended into her advocacy. Realizing that exposing people to music warrants a deeper appreciation,  she never shied away from addressing the inaccessibility of music education. “I want to provide music education for all, regardless of background or status,” Mendoza declared bravely.

A scholar’s responsibility to give back

This commitment to teaching and sharing knowledge forms a core part of her advocacy as a CCP scholar. Beyond honing her craft as a performer, she actively seeks to give back by creating accessible learning spaces, mentoring aspiring artists, and sharing the values and discipline she gained through her own training.

    CCP Scholar

This same sense of purpose also shaped how she viewed her own journey within the program. “I was really surprised to be accepted because I thought that the CCP scholarship is only given to students who have attained high artistic achievements,” shared Mendoza, recalling the surreal moment of receiving the news in 2021.

For Mendoza, her role as a scholar is not only about artistic excellence, but also about nurturing the next generation and contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable arts community. As a scholar supported by a public institution, Mendoza has a strong sense of duty to hone her talent. She became increasingly aware of the role she played, not just as a student, but as someone held accountable by the community:

“There are now high expectations and standards to uphold, because my education is funded by the taxpayers’ money. I want to give back to all the people who have supported me in pursuing music by doing well,” said the young scholar.

Thankfully, Mendoza has a steady support system, which consistently inspires and encourages her to believe in her potential. “That’s what helps me push through and continue doing what I can,” she admitted, commending how her family, peers, and mentors help her through the technical and emotional demands of the music industry.

From production work to workshop facilitation, Mendoza has expanded her involvement beyond performance and teaching. These experiences have allowed her to explore other dimensions of music.

Reflecting on her journey as a CCP scholar who performs and teaches music, Mendoza emphasized the art of knowing when to pause: “If you want to pursue music, it’s important to take care of yourself. The love and dedication to music and practicing go hand-in-hand with resting.”

In the future, Mendoza wishes to continue integrating music across disciplines after her capstone project, Titik at Tinig: A Workshop on Teaching Literacy through Music at the UPD. She also shared her dream of collaborating and sharing the spotlight with brilliant artists while treading her path to become a licensed professional music educator.

CCP scholar Mendoza answers her calling onstage and beyond

As she looks ahead, Mendoza remains committed to both aspects of her identity: as a performer and as an educator. What once sparked in the classroom has blossomed into a meaningful purpose that goes beyond personal achievement.

In pursuing teaching and performing, Mendoza spotlights music as a communal relationship, wherein the artist and audience exchange ideas and feelings by simply basking in harmonies. “I just love both [playing the violin and teaching],” she explained with a chuckle, finding the mere thought of giving up core parts of her identity absurd.

In many ways, Mendoza’s name perfectly encapsulates her journey as an artist and educator. Kaya, which translates to “can” in English, serves as clear validation of her ability to connect and grow through music.

It is now a quiet testament to the endless possibilities she holds in her future, too.

  • CCP Pasinaya Continues to Nurture and Sustain Filipino Performing Groups

CCP Pasinaya Continues to Nurture and Sustain Filipino Performing Groups

When it started in 2005, the CCP Pasinaya: The Open House Festival had only its resident companies on board, with an estimated 1000 audiences inside the CCP Main Building. Twenty years later, it has grown into the country’s largest multi-arts festival, fostering artistic exchange and genuine connections.

    PASINAYA 2026 FINAL

Its growth was not achieved overnight. It required sustained care, extensive connections and collaborations, and thoughtful planning and execution to become what it is today. With over 40,000 attendees last year alone, CCP Pasinaya’s success grows every year. Its commitment to engage audiences, nurture Filipino artists, and spark Philippine arts and culture appreciation in the next generation remains unwavering.

Much of this success can be attributed to performing groups and artists, like Komedya ng Don Galo (KDG) and Lipa Actors Company (LAC), who continue to volunteer and showcase their talents year after year.

A stage for performing groups’ stories

“Back in 2011, we were a young theater company still developing our voice, so joining such a distinguished festival [CCP Pasinaya] was both unexpected and deeply affirming,” recalled LAC artistic director Peregrine Santiago.

Komedya ng Don Galo for CCP Pasinaya

LAC began in 2008 when its pioneer members gathered for the Dulaang Viajero Filipinas Performance Lab, a project sponsored by the Lipa City Culture & the Arts Council. Luisito Nario, the group’s founder and former artistic director, formed the non-profit organization with the vision to advance theater arts in Batangas and the CALABARZON region.

Besides the financial pressure of sustaining a local theater group, LAC finds it challenging to keep its members together. “Funding is a constant uphill battle, but beyond that, balancing schedules while trying to move our productions forward is a tough act to pull off,” explained Santiago.

Two years after its birth, LAC became the first theater group from Lipa City, Batangas to perform at the CCP Pasinaya in 2010.

Meanwhile, KDG, a community-based theater organization composed of current and former students of Don Galo Elementary School in Parañaque City, found out about the festival when they mounted a production, with Malou Macatuggal at the helm, at the CCP Little Theater in 2005. They heard about the festival from CCP’s former artistic director Nanding Josef. The group joined CCP Pasinaya in 2005 and has been returning ever since.

When Jess Macatuggal became the director of KDG in 2017, he confessed that he had no idea about the CCP Pasinaya and its impact. “Doon ko mas nakita na kinikilala pala siya [CCP Pasinaya] sa buong Pilipinas.”

Komedya ng Don Galos director and writer Jess Macatuggal in action

Acknowledging the financial strain in pursuing KDG’s goal to revitalize comedy-drama theater in the Philippines, Macatuggal lamented the lack of proper recognition from the local government to sustain theater organizations like the KDG.

Leading a group of 60 members, Macatuggal encourages young artists to join auditions: “Mas maganda kasing makita ninyo ang sarili niyo sa entablado kaysa ‘yong nanonood kayo tapos puno kayo ng pagsisisi kasi hindi kayo nag-try.”

An inspiring space for tenacity and resilience

Much like LAC and KDG, CCP Pasinaya has braved difficulties in its 20 years. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, CCP Pasinaya had to cancel its performances and workshops. With the scarcity of face-to-face gatherings, the multi-arts festival switched to online editions.

Lipa Actors Company dazzles in a performance

Macatuggal was especially worried for CCP Pasinaya’s future back then. When the festival returned in 2023, he and the KDG debuted their comedy-drama iteration of Francisco Balagtas’ “Florante at Laura.” The memorable showcase comforted and reminded them that the performing arts sector is alive and well.

“Nung buhay na ulit ‘yong Pasinaya, nakita namin siya bilang sign na buhay na ulit ang entablado. Makakapagkuwento na kami ulit,” Macatuggal shared with a smile.

Santiago, on the other hand, saw the CCP Pasinaya stage as a crucial contributor to LAC’s identity: “We have built a connection with the festival audience. In 2016, we premiered our musical adaptation of Rene O. Villanueva’s ‘Santa Butsiki, Ang Unang Baboy sa Langit’ [at CCP Pasinaya], and laughter just filled the venue.”

A home built from candid connections

An annual festival happening every first weekend of February, CCP Pasinaya continues to attract performing art groups from all over the country. It inevitably creates a community that views art and self-expression as a necessity while nurturing emerging talent.

“It’s a rare moment when artists from all over the country come together, and CCP Pasinaya gives us the chance to perform at the CCP. That just adds meaning and inspiration to every performance,” said Santiago, recognizing the great honor of representing Lipa City, Batangas on a nationally recognized cultural landmark.

Macatuggal echoed the same sentiment of looking forward to meeting fellow artists, as it fuels KDG’s drive to tell stories. He reiterated, “Sobrang festive ng feeling kaya uuwi at uuwi talaga kami sa CCP para sa Pasinaya.”

    A cultural landscape for nation-building

This year’s CCP Pasinaya embodies the theme “Paglikha sa Kinabukasan.” Carrying the inspiration instilled by the festival, LAC and KDG perform on its stage once again with renewed dedication to celebrate and nurture Philippine arts and culture.

Through its staging of “Komedya Palanyag,” KDG encourages young audiences to participate in shaping the future of the Philippines’ artistic landscape: “Anong ginagawa mo para makamit ‘yong kinabukasan na ‘yon? Laging nand’yan ang pag-asa pero ‘di sapat na umaasa lang tayo.”

For its CCP Pasinaya performance in 2026, LAC will mount a theatrical reimagining of one of Batangas’ most cherished legends, “Ang Pag-ibig ni Kumintang.” “The future is always unknown, but I truly believe that if we look back at our history and learn from the past, the future becomes much clearer and more meaningful,” expressed Santiago.

Watch the performances of KDG at 1 p.m., at the CCP Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (TIG), and LAC at 4 p.m., at the Met Theater in Manila on February 8. Following the “pay-what-you-can, watch-all-you-can, and workshop-all-you-can” strategy, festival-goers can catch free shows during CCP Pasinaya 2026, along with other performances and activities.

  • CCP upholds diversity and gender equality with a façade lighting this Pride Month

CCP upholds diversity and gender equality with a façade lighting this Pride Month

This June, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) lights up not just its iconic façade—but also the hearts of many—as it joins the global celebration of Pride Month with a breathtaking display of color, light, and meaning.

Pride Month Facade Lighting Photo by Orly Daquipil 1

Starting June 25, the CCP Main Building transforms into a luminous canvas awash in the vibrant hues of the rainbow flag—an enduring symbol of pride, unity, and love. But it’s more than just a splash of color. This year’s lighting spectacle features a striking interplay of rainbow illumination and GOBO projections, creating patterns inspired by human fingerprints—each one unique, just like every person in the LGBTQIA+ community.

The powerful concept, developed by the CCP Production Design and Technical Services Division, draws a bold parallel between individuality and identity. “No two fingerprints are the same—and neither are our stories,” the team shares, emphasizing the personal yet universal journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and visibility that many in the LGBTQIA+ community face.

    Pride Month Facade Lighting 5

More than just a dazzling light show, the installation stands as a visual manifesto of the CCP’s unwavering commitment to artistic freedom, inclusivity, and representation. Through the years, the CCP has been a strong advocate for gender equality and safe spaces, using art as a catalyst for conversation, compassion, and change.

“This fingerprint motif is a symbol of authenticity and strength,” says CCP Artistic Director Dennis N. Marasigan, who also chairs the CCP Gender and Development Committee. “It reminds us that in our diversity lies our power, and that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and respected.”

The installation is made possible through the dedicated efforts of CCP’s technical team, led by concept designer Jericho A. Pagana, and brought to life by the skilled Gobo Team: Shantie De Roca, Mary Grace Budol, Lucio Tapiru, John Mar Dumayas, and Alex Pineda.

Step into this radiant tribute to individuality and pride. The façade lighting runs from 6 PM to 10 PM, June 25 to 30—a weeklong celebration of resilience, equality, and the beautiful spectrum of humanity.

  • Experience The Best Of British Theater A Second Time Around with New CCP NTL Season

Experience The Best Of British Theater A Second Time Around with New CCP NTL Season

A bigger, brighter, and bolder second season of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ National Theatre Live (CCP NTL) is set to delight its devoted Filipino audiences with a new lineup of world-class stage plays filmed live from Britain’s most exciting stages.

After a successful first season boasting waves of support from theater enthusiasts, playwrights, artists, and the broader public, the CCP National Theatre Live forges on to provide yet another exceptional ‘live’ performance experience with the best of what British theatre has to offer in more cinemas near you.

Through the partnership of the CCP with National Theatre Live and Ayala Malls, the second season of CCP NTL will premiere at Ayala Malls Cinemas in Greenbelt, Makati, Vertis North in Quezon City, and at the Ayala Center in Cebu from June 25, 2024 to May 27, 2025.

Award-winning plays Vanya, Dear England, The Motive and Cue, and Nye will grace the big screens in the Philippines.

CCP NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE S2 Vanya

Crowd favorites Fleabag, King Lear, Frankenstein, and Hamlet from the past season will make their comeback.

Hopes, dreams, and regrets are thrust into sharp focus in Vanya, a one-man adaptation premiering on June 25 at the Ayala Malls Cinemas in Greenbelt, Makati. Exploring the complexities of human emotion, Andrew Scott brings multiple characters to life in Chekhov’s Uncle masterpiece, filmed live in West End, London.

CCP NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE S2 Dear England

Returning on June 25 at Ayala Vertis North and Ayala Center Cebu is Fleabag, a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and directed by Vicky Jones, Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose. The hilarious, award-winning play that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series with the same title was filmed live on stage in London’s West End in 2019.

On July 30, James Graham’s Dear England arrives at the Ayala Malls Cinemas in Greenbelt, Makati. With the worst track record for penalties in the world, Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt, to take the team and country back to the promised land.

The contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play King Lear will be re-screened on July 30 at Ayala Vertis North and Ayala Center Cebu. Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two aging fathers – one a King and another, his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends. The play is directed by Jonathan Munby and stars Sir Ian McKellen.

CCP NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE S2 Fleabag

In Jack Thorne’s The Motive and Cue, audiences are offered a glimpse into the politics of a rehearsal room and the relationship between art and celebrity. Coming to Ayala Malls Cinemas in Greenbelt, Makati on August 27, Richard Burton, newly married to Elizabeth Taylor, will play the title role in an experimental new Broadway production of Hamlet under John Gielgud’s exacting direction. But as rehearsals progress, two ages of theater collide and the collaboration between actor and director soon threatens to unravel.

CCP NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE S2 King Lear

Theater lovers and moviegoers at Ayala Vertis North and Ayala Center Cebu will have the chance to see Vanya on August 27.

CCP NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE S2 Frankenstein

Directed by Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle, with adaptation by Nick Dear, Frankenstein will return to the Ayala Malls Cinemas in Greenbelt, Makati on September 24. The thrilling, deeply disturbing Mary Shelley classic combines scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil. Child-like in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the increasingly desperate and vengeful Creature determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

CCP NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE S2 Hamlet

Captured live on stage in 2011, the sold-out production stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, alternating between the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his creation. For September 24, Miller will be playing as the Creature.

The Motive and Cue will be shown at Ayala Vertis North and Ayala Center Cebu on September 24.

Come October 30, Fleabag will return to the Ayala Malls Cinemas in Greenbelt, Makati for the third time. Frankenstein, this time with Benedict Cumberbatch as the Creature, will premiere at Ayala Vertis North and Ayala Center Cebu on same day.

CCP NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE S2 The Motive and Cue

Witness Nye’s mind-bending life journey on November 26 at the Ayala Malls Cinemas in Greenbelt, Makati.

In Tim Price’s opus, Aneurin “Nye” Bevan confronted death in the eye, as he recollects his deepest memories from his childhood to mining underground, and his fights with Churchill.

CCP NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE S2 Nye

Benedict Cumberbatch plays the title role of yet another great Shakespearean tragedy, Hamlet, premiering on November 26, at Ayala Vertis North and Ayala Center Cebu. As the country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralyzed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state. The play is directed by Lyndsey Turner.

Closing the 2024 CCP NTL’s lineup, Hamlet will return to the Ayala Malls Cinemas in Greenbelt, Makati on December 17. Dear England will premiere on the same day at Ayala Vertis North and Ayala Center Cebu.

Witness the magic of London National Theatre through CCP National Theatre Live. First launched in June 2009, the National Theater Live is a groundbreaking project to broadcast the best of British theatre live from the London stage to cinemas across the United Kingdom, around the world, and now in the Philippine shore.

Digitally filmed in high-definition quality, the NTL films their plays in front of live theater audiences, but optimized for the big screen and made accessible to theater fans across the globe.

All screenings will be at 6:00pm, exclusively at Ayala Malls cinemas in Greenbelt, Makati, Vertis North in Quezon City, and at the Ayala Center in Cebu. Regular ticket price is at ₱300.00 in Makati and Cebu, and ₱350 in Vertis North, while special ticket price for students is at ₱150.00.

  • Championing Arts and Culture Practitioners Through CCP’s Upskilling On Performance & Visual Arts Curation Exhibition

Championing Arts and Culture Practitioners Through CCP’s Upskilling On Performance & Visual Arts Curation Exhibition

As the premier arts and culture institution in the country, the Cultural Center of the Philippines advocates for an inclusive arts education and participation by providing intensified approaches in upskilling Filipino artists to make them sustainable and competitive in today’s contemporary setting.

Prof. Cecilia De La Paz and Scholars During an Onsite Plenary in Laguna Large

This rationale sets in motion a series of workshops, dubbed the Upskilling in Performing Arts Program, aimed at equipping artists with additional skills in art and wellness, festival management, and performance curatorship for modern museums. First launched in 2022, the program was made possible through the congressional initiative of Pangasinan Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia.

It has three major phases – the first phase focused on harnessing the power of the arts, particularly performing arts, in providing psycho-social interventions to individuals affected by natural disasters and other crises. The second phase looked into the artistic and logistic side of festival management. The last phase merged performing arts and visual arts curation.

Upskilling Mentors Scholars Project Team and CCP VAMD Large

From November 2023 to March 2024, selected cultural workers participated in the third phase and attended an intensive workshop facilitated by the CCP Visual Arts and Museum Division, with ideas and practice on curatorship, cultural appreciation tours, and artistic explorations.

Selected practitioners from art and cultural institutions, organizations, spaces, and communities from different parts of the Philippines learned various aspects of community-based and ethical curatorship in performance and visual arts, exposing them to different contexts, disciplines, and strategies pertinent to their duties on cultural education and awareness.

Upskilling Scholars at the Anakbanwa Exhibition in McArthur House Dagupan Large

As a culminating activity, the project team curated an exhibition featuring documentations of ideas and conversations, exposure trips, presentations, and project plans developed during the workshop. The exhibit opens on May 3, 2024 and runs until June 3, 2024 at the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet (TIG Gallery), located at 3/F Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Black Box Theater).

Aside from the exhibition, the CCP launches the Upskilling Handbook: Workshop Proceedings and Guide to Developing Modes of Care in Curatorship, a product of the intensive workshop intended as a guide for future use. The handbook contains transcripts of the lectures and documentation of the upskilling activities, including discussion prompts, worksheets, and workshop instructions.

Upskilling Scholars with CCP Officials and VAMD at the TIG Large

Documentation and key elements of the workshop experience have been curated as publication content, enabling readers to further their grasp of different processes involved in cultural work. The handbook is particularly aimed at cultural workers, who are invited to use the materials to inform their professional practice, towards more meaningful and empathetic cultural work.

Authors and contributors include Cecilia De La Paz, Roselle Pineda, and Mark Louie Lugue of the University of the Philippines-Diliman, performance artist and museum worker Nicolas “Nic” Aca, Alain Zedrick Camiling and Lara Acuin of the De la Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Greys Compuesto and Jay Nathan Jore of University of the Philippines-Cebu, Jason Dy, SJ and Pauline Bianca Ma-alat of the Ateneo de Manila University, Katherine Nuñez and Shara Francisco of 98B COLLABoratory, Siddharta Perez of the National University of Singapore Museum, and Adonis Reuel Enciso and Mercedes Marie Tolentino of the CCP Visual Arts and Museum Division.
