  • Baraptasan 2024: Bringing Different Voices in One Stage

For a mambabalagtas, verbal joust and poetry are so much more than a way to express complex emotions and stories. While it was born as a form of entertainment during the bleak era of American colonialism, Balagtasan – a form of traditional verbal jousting – became a venue to discuss socio-political issues that besieged contemporary society.

    1 Medium

Through facts, rhymes, and clever lines, the mambabalagtas would exchange discussions on the pros and cons of a topic relevant to the community. When it first happened on April 6, 1924, Balagtasan became the rage.

Town folks would gather at the plaza and listen to mambalalagtas defend their stand on certain social issues. While it seemed like a verbal display of one’s mastery of the Filipino language, it became a powerful tool to engage the public and create informed conversations on social realities.

But through the years, with the advent of new entertainment platforms, verbal jousts become few and far between in recent times.

With this in mind, the Cultural Center of the Philippines embarks on a new project to make Balagtasan and other types of verbal jousts remain in the consciousness of the Filipino people, especially the young generations.

To commemorate the centennial of Balagtasan, CCP, through its Kanto Kultura program, presents BaRaptasan, a Balagtasan competition with a twist. The competition gives Balagtasan a contemporary feel with the incorporation of rap.

With topics discussing the clash between modernity and tradition, the CCP’s Kanto Kultura BaRaptasan Grand Finals is open to the public. Ten finalists will battle it out in the finale, slated on April 6, 2 PM, at the Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium

The group finalists are: Ang Mga Supling ni Angela, Bagong Koronadal Advocates (City of Koronadal), Barapbida Normalista, DMD, El Setecientos, Harayasista Group, Lakbay Iral, Rapper sa Pinas, Tanglaw, and Waraptasan.

ANG MGA SUPLING NI ANGELA OF TABACO CITY, ALBAY

Paying homage to the first Filipina poet Angela Manalang Gloria, and one of Tabaco City’s proud daughters, Ang Mga Supling ni Angela hopes to present Tabaco City with a bang on the national stage. The group is composed of Kirschen Xyvrl Balajadia, Carlo Campit, and Franco Balingbing.

ANG MGA SUPLING NI ANGELA Group Photo

The proud children of Tabaco believe that their hometown has a tight-knit creative community, something that Filipino people should know. “Kasi ‘pag sinabing Albay, ang unang naiisip ay Legazpi City. Pero meron ding Tabaco City. Gusto naming ipakilala sa national stage na nandito kami,” said the group.

BAGONG KORONADAL ADVOCATES (CITY OF KORONADAL) OF SOUTH COTABATO

Working students and full-time storytellers Angel Faith Leal, Jhon Van Lapu, and Philip Jay Leaño make up the Bagong Koronadal Advocates group. Aside from being familiar with verbal joust competitions, the members share the same love for theater. “Pare-pareho naming mahal ang entablado,” declared the group.

    CITY OF KORONADAL

The group wants to bring the city of Koronadal wherever they go, especially for BaRaptasan. To sincerely support the group, Mayor Eliordo U. Ogena even went to the extent of awarding them the Gawad Parangal ng Sining of Koronadal City.

    BARAPBIDA NORMALISTA OF TACLOBAN, LEYTE

Members Ray Padiwan, Wally Concepcion, and Dave Padel are third-year students taking up Education (majoring in Filipino) at Leyte Normal University. Handpicked by their professor for the competition, the three want to reintroduce their university as an avenue for creatives, not just academics.

    BarapBida Normalistas Group Photo

“May kakayahan ang mga taga-Leyte Normal University na ipamalas ang kanilang galing sa mga ganitong malikhaing paligsahan,” said Barapbida Normalista.

    DMD OF MAKATI CITY

The fourth group, DMD, consists of rappers John Dave P. Rosimo, Marielle Lou C. Bernardo, and Reynaldo S. Bernardo from Makati City. Their group name stood for their initials.

    DMD Group Photo

Before BaRaptasan, the three had been joining rap competitions. Couple Bernardo and Bernardo are members of Champion Paikot, a group of rappers, but would sometimes join contests as a duo. Rosimo has also been competing in rap contests.

EL SETECIENTOS OF SANTA ROSA, LAGUNA

El Setecientos, a group from Santa Rosa, Laguna, is composed of Simon, Mhagz, and Arkyak. Besides continuously honing their craft as seasoned rappers, they now want to present their craft to the national stage. Always eager to experience something new, El Setecientos of Laguna signed up for BaRaptasan to contribute to the artistic landscape of the Philippines.

HARAYASISTA GROUP OF LABO, CAMARINES NORTE

The Harayasista Group may have performers Louie L. Francia, John Earnest M. Evidor, and Amynel L. Garino, but it also has Angel Yasis as its coach. Hailing from Camarines Norte, Yasis looked for performers to create his own group after assisting another competitor.

    Harayasista Group

Meanwhile, Evidor became interested in BaRaptasan because it engages his two passions – music and poetry. “Nagkaro’n po ako ng interes dahil pinagsama ‘yong rap at Balagtas. Ang ganda!” he exclaimed.

Their group name, Harayasista, came from the Filipino word haraya, which translates to wandering mind. Yasis inserted his surname “Asis” and added the syllable “ta” for “tao” or people.

LAKBAY IRAL OF DASMARIÑAS CITY, CAVITE

Lakbay Iral members Aaron Vincent G. Jimenez, Louie Ross P. Reyes, and Gabriel Angelo Pedrosa formed the group because of the BaRaptasan competition. True to its translation, Lakbay Iral aims to live life by creating and immersing in the arts.

    Lakbay Iral Group Photo

Shortly after realizing their passion for sharing arts and crafts, the three members found themselves in a non-government organization, strengthening their bond as artists. Its members participate in open mic competitions despite their busy schedules as students.

RAPPER SA PINAS OF BOCAUE, BULACAN

Ernesto Canoy Jr., Oliver Monidero, and Fernando Melencio Jr. met through a Facebook group for rappers. Melencio reached out to the other two and quickly became friends. Eventually, they formed Rapper sa Pinas and applied for the competition. They want to bring to the competition the natural nature of their performance, emphasizing their message and working hard to make sure it will be heard.

    Rapper sa Pinas

TAGAPAGTAGUYOD NG LITERATURA AT WIKA (TANGLAW) OF ILOCOS SUR

The Tagapagtaguyod ng Literatura at Wika or TANGLAW is actually an organization from the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College, under the Secondary Education Program. Edlyn Baniqued, Deprisse Guco, and Schulamight Manzano chose to honor their school as they represented their institution on the BaRaptasan stage. They are all third-year Filipino Majors who were invited by their professor to join this competition.

    WARAPTASAN OF TACLOBAN CITY, LEYTE

Waraptasan is a wordplay spun by its members to show that they are from Tacloban City. With Waray as their language, members Ma. Regina Babon, James Leala, and Kenneth Cinco believe that “when doing art, you have to bring your own identity.” And that is exactly what they plan to do in BaRaptasan.

    Waraptasan Group Photo

Despite coming from different parts of the Philippines and different backgrounds, all 10 finalists share the same passion for storytelling, rap, poetry, and theater. All of them anchor on their passions, hoping they will emerge victorious and be named the first Hari ng BaRaptasan.

  • Conveying Emotions and Stories Through Music

A good live performance is one that creates a connection between the artist and the audience, where the music not only sounds great but also feels emotionally resonant, and this was exactly what renowned Russian pianist Nikolay Khozyainov brought to Manila when he performed as a guest soloist recently.

Guest soloist Nikolay Khozyainov with Maestro Grzegorz Nowak

“It was my first time to come to the Philippines, to perform with the PPO for the Filipino audience. Filipino people and musicians are very passionate and sophisticated people, it was a great joy to present the incredible masterpiece of Rachmaninov for the audience in Manila,” said the Russian pianist.

Billed “Russian Masters,” the third concert of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra for its concert season this year was curated to pay tribute to some of the best Russian composers: Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Sergei Prokofiev.

Leading the orchestra was PPO music director Maestro Grzegorz Nowak, with whom Khozyainov has worked with before. When the Maestro invited him to collaborate again, this time in Manila, Khozyainov was more than happy to oblige.

    Maestro Grzegorz Nowak

Born in Blagoveshchensk in 1992, a city in the Russian Far East, Khozyainov began to play the piano at the young age of five after hearing classical music in a local music store. “I came up to my mother and told her: ‘I want to play music.’ I had a desire to make those incredible sounds myself. Piano is like an orchestra for me, I can express any instrument on it, including the human voice,” shared Khizyainov.

For a gifted pianist like Khozyainov, the most important aspect of every piece is the emotion that it conveys. Music, after all, has always been a way to bring people together. It has the power to influence and advocate significant movements in the world, especially in preventing conflict and promoting peace.

    Nikolay Khozyainov

Performing Rachminoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the most amazing piano concertos in the piano repertoire, for the PPO Concert III, Khozyainov described the whole concerto as a masterpiece that “simply takes your breath away.”

“It was written in a very difficult period in Rachmaninoff’s life, he had depression and couldn’t compose anything. This piece is about overcoming desperate situations and getting to the light despite everything,” he expounded.

Khozyainov’s personal style when it comes to playing the piano involves going to the source of everything. For him, it is impossible to recreate a piece without knowing the sources.

“That is why I always study all existing manuscripts, all circumstances surrounding the creation of a musical piece. A printed score is good to have, but to really feel the piece with all your heart, you need to dive deeply into the manuscript. This way you can truly understand all the intentions of the composer.”

    Russian pianist Nikolay Khozyainov

Passion is Khozyainov’s driving force. With recitals, concerto engagements, and sold-out performances on all continents at the world’s foremost stages, every performance is not just a display of skill, but an expression of his love for the art.

“It’s about bringing the essence of the music to life, making each note tell a story that the audience can relate to,” concluded Khozyainov.

Through the mastery of the great Russian composers, their music and stories will live on as part of humanity – celebrated and retold over and over again for the many years to come.

The next PPO concert, dubbed “Ode to Joy,”  will premiere on December 8, 2023, 7:30pm, with Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto no. 2 in A and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9, op.125, D minor. Filipino pianist and former CCP president Raul Sunico will perform with the PPO.

The PPO concert season is in partnership with SSI Group, Inc., TBWA\SMP, Ascott Bonifacio Global City, and Lyf Malate Manila.

For more information about the PPO’s 39th concert season and their upcoming shows, visit the CCP (www.culturalcenter.gov.ph) and follow the official CCP social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest updates.

  • Intramuros Evenings Makes A Comeback with CCP’S Isang Gabi ng Sarsuwela

In the late 1990s, Intramuros hosted a series of cultural shows produced and curated under the management of the Intramuros Administration. Dubbed Intramuros Evenings, the program featured the best of Philippine artists and performing groups. However, the program ceased for various reasons.

ISANG GABI NG SARSUWELA AYEN MUJI LAUREL NENEN ESPINA AND SHIELA VALDERRAMA MARTINEZ

This year, the Intramuros Administration is reviving the program, kicking off with the re-staging of CCP Out-Of-The-Box (OTB) Series, Isang Gabi ng Sarsuwela on November 18, 6pm, at the Baluarte de San Diego, located inside the Walled City of Manila.

“We wanted to revive Intramuros Evenings because this is not just for the promotion of Intramuros as a tourist destination, but also for the promotion of our identity, culture, and heritage. The idea is to integrate historical preservation of heritage sites inside Intramuros with urban renewal and cultural tourism,” said Intramuros Administration head Atty. Joan Padilla.

Sharing the same goals to promote and preserve what is inherently Filipino and celebrate the best of the best in performing arts, the IA partnered with the Cultural Center of the Philippines for the revival of Intramuros Evenings.

ISANG GABI NG SARSUWELA SHIELA VALDERRAMA MARTINEZ AND LORENZ MARTINEZ

First held in 1996, Intramuros Evenings shares a long history with the leading arts institution. It used to feature performances from CCP resident companies such as the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO), Ballet Philippines, and Tanghalang Pilipino.

With the revival of Intramuros Evenings, the CCP’s OTB series is a timely fit to showcase a similar revival of the sarsuwela. Owing its roots to the Spanish zarzuela originally brought to the Philippines in the late 1800s, the sarsuwela became the popular form of entertainment for many Filipinos, particularly in the early 1900s.

ISANG GABI NG SARSUWELA REUBEN LAURENTE TAD TADIOAN FRANCO LAUREL AND LORENZ MARTINEZ

“When we planned the CCP Out-of-the-Box Series, we already have the eye towards bringing it to Intramuros. When we designed and programmed the series, it was intended to include productions that can travel. With modular set design and technical requirements, we can re-stage the different productions under the series anywhere, anytime,” shared CCP artistic director Dennis Marasigan.

The CCP Out-Of-The-Box Series features performances that audiences normally wouldn’t see in conventional programming. It aims to create a space for adventurous audiences, artists, and ideas.

Isang Gabi ng Sarsuwela, the opening salvo of Intramuros Evenings, features excerpts and songs from classic and contemporary sarsuwela productions. Marasigan and music director Joed Balsamo have put together top-notch performers who have all distinguished themselves in classical and musical theater, such as Nenen Espina, Franco Laurel, Ayen Munji Laurel, Reuben Laurente, Lorenz Martinez, Shiela Valderrama Martinez, Jonathan Tadioan, and Karylle Tatlonghari.

ISANG GABI NG SARSUWELA KARYLLE TATLONGHARI

Within the spirit of promoting our culture and heritage, the event will take place in Baluarte de San Diego, a historic bastion of Spanish colonial fortification in Intramuros.

“We are pushing Baluarte de San Diego as the initial site for Intramuros Evenings to reintroduce this historic site to the public. The consequent installments of Intramuros Evenings will feature other historic sites inside the Walled City of Manila,” said Atty. Padilla.

Completed between 1653 and 1663, Baluarte de San Diego is a bulwark shaped like an ace of spades. The bulwark includes the Fort Nuestra Senora de Guia, a circular tower designed by Jesuit priest and architect Antonio Sedeño and built from 1586-1587. In 1593, the upper portion of the tower was demolished after suffering from cracks. The rest of the structure was integrated into Baluarte de San Diego.

ISANG GABI NG SARSUWELA TAD TADIOAN AND NENEN ESPINA

In 1762, the Baluarte was breached by the British forces with cannon fire, but was restored when the Spaniards returned years after. An earthquake destroyed the structure in 1863, leading to its abandonment. During the Battle of Manila in 1945, the circular fort was buried under layers of soil, saving it from total destruction.

The circular fort was excavated in 1979, while the baluarte was restored by 1992, with a garden added at its base. Since then, the first stone fort in Manila is now an archeological park.

“The partnership with the Intramuros Administration comes in perfect timing. Since the CCP Main Building is undergoing rehabilitation, we have been looking for new venues where we can bring our performances and productions,” concluded Marasigan.

The CCP continues to go beyond the corners of the complex and into the regions and other cities, bringing its various programs, shows, and projects to different venues and reaching out to more audiences.

Catch the revival of Intramuros Evenings, featuring the CCP Out-Of-The-Box Series: Isang Gabi ng Sarsuwela, on November 18, 2023, 6PM at Baluarte de San Diego, Intramuros. The show is free to the public. Entrance fee to Baluarte de San Diego is priced at Php 75, with discounted price of Php 50 for students, senior citizens, and PWDs.

  • Lara Maigue and Gian Magdangal Going Out Of The Box with Woodwinds Concert

Soprano Lara Maigue and musical theater artist Gian Magdangal step out of their comfort zones and try something out of the box with the Wondrous Woodwind Concert, the third installment of the CCP Out-of-The-Box Series slated on October 27 (730pm) and 28 (4pm), 2023 at the Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater).

    LARA MAIGUE

Maigue has performed with notable orchestras in a variety of performance halls in Asia and the Philippines over the years. Opera, Kundiman, jazz standards, Broadway, OPM, and her own original compositions are among the songs in her arsenal. She recently rose to fame after her version of Mozart’s “Queen of the Night” aria garnered over 30 million views on Instagram, following the success of her version of “The Flower Duet” with her mother (Nanette Moscardon), which garnered over 6 million views.

    GIAN MAGDANGAL

As for Magdangal, he has worked in a variety of reputable theater shows and other productions. He reprised his role as Hector in the most recent staging of the musical Ang Huling El Bimbo, which has undoubtedly continued to solidify his career this 2023.

Magdangal remarked that working with an orchestra’s woodwind section on a concert is something he has never done before. “Personally, it’s my first time to collaborate with the woodwinds. I’ve never experienced that as an artist. I have performed with bands, with a full orchestra or chamber orchestras. This is something out of the box and something I look forward to. Kung pwede lang mapanood namin ‘yong sarili namin. I would wanna see that. It’s very unique,” he said.

Maigue, on the other hand, looks forward to performing with the PPO Woodwind Quintet, composed of bassoonist Frenvee Andra, oboe player John Peter Bautista, French horn player Ernani Pascual, flutist Marie Poblete, and clarinetist Ariel Sta. Ana.

“Gian and I were quite surprised when we saw the program prepared by Direk Ariel (Yonzon). Having worked with him in the past, he really thinks out of the box. It is very tricky because the songs need to be arranged specifically for this concert. Our preparation would be learning songs with a different approach,” shared Maigue.

LARA MAIGUE WITH THE PPO WOODWIND QUINTET 2

For this concert, the PPO Woodwind Quintet would be performing familiar selections of classical music including Johann Sebastian Bach’s Fugue in G minor, Jacques Ibert’s Trois Pièces Brèves, Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango (Arr. Jeff Scott), Zequinha Abreu’s Tico Tico no Fubá, among others.

The musicians would also be playing beloved Filipino tunes such as Edgardo Parungao’s Philippine Airs Medley, National Artist Lucio San Pedro’s Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, and an Ernani Cuenco Medley, featuring Kalesa, Nahan, Bato sa Buhangin, and Gaano Kita Kamahal.

The concert will surely engage the audience members in a sing-along of nostalgic favorites with the Beatles Medley and 70’s Manila Sound. Dancers Bianca Manalo, Abigael Tinio, and Brando Balmedina also share the stage in spot numbers.

For her part, Maigue will be singing Giulio Caccini’s Ave Maria, while Magdangal will cover National Artist Ryan Cayabyab’s Hibang sa Awit. They will also perform an especially arranged duet cover of a couple of Taylor Swift songs.

Both admitted that the performance would be challenging for them as artists because they would be dealing with diverse instruments of the woodwind section, which requires them to relearn songs they already know – something that Maigue and Magdangal thought to be a wonderful opportunity for them to learn new things.

When asked which among the woodwind instruments pique their interests, Maigue who came from a family of musicians mentioned that she wished to play the clarinet. “I love how it sounds and I have a piece I want to do with clarinet.”

Magdangal, for his part, is interested in learning how to play a woodwind instrument due to its distinct texture and calming sound. “For the fun of it, I want to learn a woodwind instrument because it’s your voice and not your voice at the same time.”

Catch Lara Maigue and Gian Magdangal in CCP Out-of-The-Box Series: Wondrous Woodwind this October 27 and 28, at the Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater). The CCP OOTB Series has been conceptualized to present performances that audiences normally wouldn’t see in conventional programming. With the ongoing rehabilitation of the CCP Main Building, the premier arts and culture institution of the country strives to continue fostering artistic excellence and cultural representation across multiple venues.

Get your tickets at the CCP TIG Box Office, located inside the CCP Complex in Roxas Boulevard, or at TicketWorld. Follow the CCP official social media accounts in Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube for latest updates.

    ALERON ALL MALE CHORAL ENSEMBLE

Aleron began its humble roots in Quezon City as a passion project amongst friends and alumni of the Ateneo de Manila High School Glee Club in 2006. Since then, the ensemble has evolved into a community of like-minded musicians and professionals from a myriad of fields, reaping top honors in international competitions like the First Prize at the 1st Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival in Manila (2013), the Grand Prize at the 10th Busan International Choral Festival in Korea (2014), the Over- all Winner at the 31st Takarazuka International Chamber Chorus Competition in Japan (2015), the First Prize in the 10th Mainhausen International Choir Competition in Germany (2017) and two 1st Prizes in the 2nd Limburger Männerchor Festival in Germany (2019). Aleron is also named an Ani ng Dangal awardee by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Leading Aleron is choral director and voice teacher Christopher Arceo. His notable stints in the choral field include singing for the San Francisco Choral Artists under Magen Salomon and the Grammy-award winning San Francisco Symphony Chorus under Ragnar Bohlin. Under his leadership, Aleron has presented concert programs that sought to be relevant through creative innovation. In 2017, Aleron was given the opportunity to present its program as the featured Filipino choir at the World Choral Symposium for Choral Music in Barcelona, Spain. In 2019, he was featured as the first non-European guest conductor at the Svenska Kyrkans Gosskörsförening, taking Aleron with him to this annual gathering of male choirs in Sweden.

  • CCP, Andrea O. Veneracion Sing Phils. Foundation Welcome The Sing Phils. Youth Choir Batch 4

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), through its Cultural Exchange Department (CED) and the Andrea O. Veneracion Sing Philippines Foundation welcome the Sing Philippines Youth Choir (SPYC) Batch 4 composed of 39 choristers from 24 provinces and local communities nationwide.

SPYC Batch 4 with CED head Chinggay Bernardo rev

From July 19 to 23, 2023, the SPYC batch 4 will be in Manila to undergo a week-long music camp under the mentorship of Philippine Madrigal Singers (MADz) choirmaster Mark Anthony Carpio and other choral music experts.  They will also have a special participation in the MADz concert as part of the AOV International Choral Festival on July 23 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati City.

First organized and launched in 2014, the first batch of SPYC was participated by fifty (50) choristers from 19 provinces across the country who underwent a professional week-long music camp under Carpio. The Sing Philippines movement brings to life National Artist Andrea O. Veneracion’s vision of a nation singing in harmony and united in songs.   The second batch was organized in 2016 which added a new set of 50 singers from 26 provinces, the third batch in 2018 had 51 singers from 37 provinces/cities.   In 2019, a tour group that was organized from the first 3 batches competed and won 2nd Prize and Gold Diploma for the Classical Mixed & Equal Category and Gold Diploma in the Ethnic Category in the 2022 Busan International Choral Festival and Competition.

    SPYC Batch 4 rev

Batch 4, which was organized during the pandemic last year, underwent virtual training and performance. This year, they will finally get the chance to make music together face-to-face. Some of them expressed their excitement for the music making together and what the camp will give them as artists and individuals:

Two things: the appreciation of the value and beauty of discipline, and the joy of creating beautiful pieces of art alongside people with whom I share the same aspirations that facilitate peace, love, and unity.

    -Jeannard Ticong, tenor, Baguio City-

Art loses meaning when it does not connect with hearts and souls. This music camp will give me a better view and a richer understanding of this wonderful reality.

-Rene Derek Joseph Inapan, Cebu City, Bass-

The F2F Music Camp and Performance gives a significant privilege of sharing the beauty of actual vibrations.  Beyond that, choral singing is honing deeper all the dimensions of man (physical, sociopolitical, emotional, spiritual) especially now that we are giving rebirth after the pandemic the unending quest of developing excellence through music making.

-Alshamir Bryan Arripudin, alto, Zamboanga City-

The daily music camp sessions of the SPYC Batch 4 will be held at the Prajna Hall of the Fo Guang Shan Mabuhay Temple (FGSMT) in Manila.  The FGSMT has been an active partner and supporter of CCP especially its outreach and cultural exchange programs.  Last 2022, they also hosted the SPYC Tour group before they competed in Korea and the annual Kutitap, multi-arts camp for indigenous children.

To date, the SPYC has 213 singers from 56 local communities all over the country.

Space/Place takes inspiration from Michel Foucault’s Heterotopia or his musings on the concept of space and how individuals best understand them. The common understanding of space is often associated with people, things, and environments, while Foucault argues that our understanding of it has changed or rather, is constantly changing.

Fundamentally, the printmakers’ response to working with a predetermined printing surface puts into play the dynamics of working within a collective.

The exhibition hopes to investigate how printmaking can be utilized to represent our personal narratives and each artist’s process in place-making. Technique-wise, the prints are products of a variety of hand-pull printmaking techniques which include, but are not limited to relief, intaglio, serigraphy, and lithography.

The exhibition highlights how printmaking can be expanded through the exploration of various creative methods and hopefully encourages discussions on the significance of the medium in contemporary art practice.

Formerly known as the Philippine Association of Printmakers, AP is the CCP’s artist-in-residence group for the visual arts. The group has been founded in 1968 at their first studio-workshop at the Philippine Women’s University, through the initiative of artist Manuel Rodriguez Sr., along with its first board members Ivi Avellana, Mila Enage, Lamberto Hechanova, Imelda Nakpil, and Adiel Arevalo who became its first president.

In 1972, the group moved to Jorge Bocobo St., Ermita after raising funds for the construction of a new studio. Through the years, the printmaker group transferred from studio to studio until they finally found a home at the back of the Tanghalang Francisco Balagtas (Folk Arts Theater) in the CCP Complex in 1997. Through the CCP Resident Companies and Associates Program, the studio continues to be AP’s creative space for members and visiting artists.

ART ENTHUSIASTS ENJOY THE ARTWORKS ON DISPLAY DURING THE OPENING RECEPTION OF SPACE PLACE EXHIBIT

Through the years, AP has been on top of promoting the art of printmaking in the Philippines, offering workshops on the different techniques of printmaking not just in their studio, but also in the regions.

Exploring spaces and places through prints

Every year, AP holds annual shows at the CCP, as well as exhibitions in different galleries and art spaces here and abroad. The group also organizes “Art by the Bay,” an open house event where visitors can chat with the printmakers, participate in printmaking demos, buy artworks, and join print raffles while enjoying good wine and the excellent view of Manila Bay.
