  • Summon your courage to face fear on the big screen when “Evil Dead Rise”

Ayala Malls Cinemas continues to give more reasons to movie enthusiasts to experience and relish once again the joys of watching horror movies on the big screen with their own curation of film titles in the A-List Series. Coming this May 10 as part of it’s a-List Series is “Evil Dead Rise” from the iconic film franchise.

The films follow two sisters being reunited, Beth (played by Lilly Sullivan) visits her older sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) living and raising her children alone in LA.  Shortly upon Beth’s arrival, an earthquake popped open a hole in their garage that revealed the Book of the Dead and released evil spirits, ensuing a demonic possession of Ellie, resulting into carnage as she pursues her sister and children.

An appetite for serving up bloody frights reunites the producing team behind the original and successive “Evil Dead” films: producer Rob Tapert and executive producers Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. They are joined by accomplished filmmaker Lee Cronin to take the action to new places (and heights) with “Evil Dead Rise.”  Since 1981, the cult classic “The Evil Dead” has spawned a long-lasting IP and a passionate fanbase that transcends generations. Planning to create an eagerly awaited new film in the franchise, Raimi met with studio executives in 2018 and pitched the idea of doing something new theatrically, leveraging the property while expanding the storytelling.

    Evil Dead Rise

In keeping with “Evil Dead Rise” director’s (Lee Cronin) vision, Ayala Malls Cinemas lets the audience in an immersive ultimate fear experience as the family fights for survival against a demon-possessed mom turned into a non-stop killing machine.

As Lee Cronin is quick to bring horror back to the basics, he shares, “I hope audiences are going to love the horror, because first and foremost, when you make a horror movie, you want it to be scary and entertaining. I think moviegoers will enjoy the visual verve and restlessness of the movie when it really gets going, along with the fresh experience—this is very much an ‘Evil Dead’ movie, but it’s really in the here and now. And hopefully, it will be an entry point into an even greater ‘Evil Dead’ universe than the one we know to date. I think great horror is something that you watch and then it follows you home, when you turn the lights out. This really takes the horror home.”

Further, Foreman looks forward for the film audiences to realize  that it’s never too late to be the better version of themselves after seeing the movie, “What I like most about the film is that it’s going to be around and everybody who looks at it will say: “I can do better than that.” Especially those who have to get up, brush their pants off, spit in their palms and try again. I think people will say, “If he can do it, I know I can do what I got to do.” That kind of thing, whatever it is, even if it’s not more than: “I’m going back to college.” That’s what I hope people get out of this. Get up. Brush your pants off, fight, and do it all over again. It’s never too late.”

  • “Empire of Light” Exclusive at Ayala Malls Cinemas on Feb. 22 with Valentine’s sneaks

EMPIRE OF LIGHT Colin Firth Micheal Ward

Directed by highly acclaimed filmmaker Sam Mendes, “Empire of Light” is considered a love letter to the cinema and a moving drama about the power of human connection during turbulent times. Set in and around a faded old cinema in an English coastal town in the early 1980s, it follows Hilary (Colman), a cinema manager struggling with her mental health, and Stephen (Micheal Ward), a new employee who longs to escape this provincial town in which he faces daily adversity. Both Hilary and Stephen find a sense of belonging through their unlikely and tender relationship and come to experience the healing power of music, cinema, and community.

    EMPIRE OF LIGHT Olivia Colman

Academy Award® winner Sam Mendes (1917, Revolutionary Road, Road to Perdition, Jarhead, American Beauty) writes and directs “Empire of Light”. Mendes shared that the movie was almost entirely born out of the pandemic. “Lockdown was a period of intense self-examination and reflection for all of us. And for me it meant starting to confront these memories that I’d been wrestling with since childhood. That was the spur to write – to explore those memories and to see if I could unlock anything interesting.”

    EMPIRE OF LIGHT

Ayala Malls Cinemas’ A-List Series release of “Empire of Light” comes at an opportune moment when the cinemas have started reeling again after the pandemic, creating parallels on the passage of time, how the cinema used to be and how movies are being projected in the contemporary world.  Today, the art of film projection has largely passed to digital, but the film is part of a time when movies were projected by a skilled professional using two machines, with celluloid passing by an arclight, watching for secret signals to switch reels. It is a valentine not just to movies, but to movies as exhibited in the cinema locally and around the globe. The film was also inspired by the concern that people weren’t going to these places anymore – places where people usually gather for shared experiences.

    Empire of Light Main Poster

“When I wrote the movie there was also another common obsession: we were all worried whether the cinema was going to die, along with live performances,” added Mendes.  Harris also shared that, “They’re a beacon and a place that bring people together, that’s what cinema always should do and can do. It’s a place where people go who maybe don’t fit in elsewhere but can find a home and joy in that shared experience of watching a film together.”

  • Ayala Malls Cinemas’ ‘A-List Series’ Spotlights Anna Kendrick’s Best Performance To-Date in the Psychological Drama “Alice, Darling”

For the avid cinema audience, Ayala Malls Cinemas’ A-List is one of this year’s must-see that offers an interesting lineup of curated titles exclusively for its patrons.  This January 25, the A-List Series brings Kendrick’s finest performance of her career, as hailed by critics, in “Alice, Darling” – a taut thriller about coercion and control, but most importantly, about the power of deeply-rooted female friendships that ultimately leads to resiliency and empowerment.

    Anna Kendrick in Alice Darling

When the audience first encounters Alice (Kendrick), she is fully in denial about her fraught relationship with her boyfriend Simon (played by Charlie Carrick) and how damaging it is. “When we meet Alice, she doesn’t really know who she is all. It was actually a really bizarre character to play because the whole point is that she’s sort of lost herself, and that everything in her focus, all her energy, is going toward being kind of small and flexible and to manage her partner’s potential reactivity. And the sense that if she’s just a little bit better, if she is just perfect, everything will be okay. That mindset slowly creeps in, and – before she knows it – she doesn’t recognize herself. Only when she is with her close friends Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) and Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku) does Alice have a little more room to breathe. It’s interesting because she’s resistant to that at first – if she fully recognizes and accepts herself and then returns to her partner, she will be in serious trouble – and her carefully constructed, self-sabotaging world will come apart,” Kendrick explains.

“Alice, Darling” is a unique, compelling film that has to be made according to Babe Nation Films’ Nolan and Tapscot, who’s committed to championing female-identifying voices and stories.  “It was such a unique story we hadn’t seen anything like it. There have been projects that home in on abusive relationships, but nothing this subtle and focused on the friendship between women,” Nolan shares.

Seth Rogen Paul Dano Michelle Williams The Fabelmans

In “The Fabelmans,” Spielberg’s younger version Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) is devoted to filmmaking, an interest that is celebrated and championed by his artistic mother, Mitzi (four-time Academy Award® nominee Michelle Williams). Sammy’s successful, scientific father, Burt (Paul Dano), supports Sammy’s work, but views it as an unserious hobby. By 16, Sammy is both the primary observer and archivist of his family story. When his family moves west, Sammy discovers a heartbreaking truth about his mother that will redefine their relationship and alter the future for himself and his entire family.

Co-written with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, “The Fabelmans” is a cinematic memory of the forces, and family, that shaped Spielberg’s life and career.  “At a very young age, something happened, which is reflected in our film, where I stopped perceiving my mother as a parent, and began looking upon her as a person,” says Spielberg. “I think all kids at a certain point in their lives have these moments where they realize, ‘Hey, my parents have been people all this time.’ I had that epiphany when I was 16 years old.”

Chloe East Gabriel LaBelle The Fabelmans

“The Fabelmans” is unquestionably a fitting title to Ayala Malls Cinemas’ ‘A-List Series’ and best viewed on the big screen with its highly inspiring and moving portrait of Spielberg and his family especially his parents, infused with the same humanistic grace that marks all his films.

This year’s most anticipated film in cinemas, “The Fabelmans” currently enjoys a very fresh 91% rating at Rotten Tomatoes with rave reactions and reviews worldwide. ““The Fabelmans” does it all, with an expansive spirit and that quintessential Spielbergian combination of honesty and sentiment,” says Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post. New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinski considers “The Fabelmans” as the best movie of the year so far, “It’s gripping, visually mesmeric, boasts an exceptional, grounded script by Spielberg and Tony Kushner and is acted to the hilt. A no-holds-barred Michelle Williams skyrockets to the front of the Oscar race with an unforgettable performance.”

  • Only One Will Survive in “Halloween Ends” Opens Exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas on October 12

Jamie Lee Curtis James Jude Courtney in HALLOWEEN ENDS

“Halloween Ends” brings back Jamie Lee Curtis in her iconic role as Laurie Strode as she faces off for the last time against the embodiment of evil, Michael Myers, in an unprecedented confrontation never before seen on-screen. Over more than four decades, the Halloween franchise and Jamie Lee Curtis’s character Laurie Strode have reshaped and redefined the horror genre forever. The record-breaking relaunch of the franchise that began with 2018’s Halloween and continued with 2021’s Halloween Kills now reaches its jaw-dropping conclusion with a film that is unlike any Halloween film.

In this unexpected final chapter, set four years after the events of last year’s Halloween Kills, Laurie is living with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) and is finishing writing her memoir. Michael Myers hasn’t been seen since. Laurie, after allowing the specter of Michael to determine and drive her reality for decades, has decided to liberate herself from fear and rage and embrace life. But when a young man, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell; The Hardy Boys, Virgin River), is accused of killing a boy he was babysitting, it ignites a cascade of violence and terror that will force Laurie to finally confront the evil she can’t control, once and for all.

“This story begins with a babysitter and a child on Halloween night that goes terribly wrong,” Curtis says. The opening sequence is a sly inversion of the premise of the 1978 film, where a babysitter, not a child, is a killer’s target. “That sequence is so crazy intense, beautifully shot and visually put together that, just on its own, I think it could have been an Oscar®-nominated short film,” Curtis says.

Only one of them survives this fight to the death., So as Curtis and James Jude Courtney, who plays Michael Myers (aka The Shape) prepared for their final scene, their history together, both as characters and actors, the weight of the moment became overwhelming. “When Jamie and I had our big finale, I pulled her aside and asked her to walk me through the beats,” Courtney says. “As she did, both of us just started going deep into this emotional place together. Then we had tears coming down our cheeks. This was what was happening between the characters, but it’s also what was happening to us while we acted it.”

    a scene from HALLOWEEN ENDS

It’s particularly meaningful that Laurie Strode has become a symbol of female strength, resilience and endurance worldwide, and that the success of this character and these films have helped pave the way for a new generation of strong, layered female film characters, not just in the horror genre, but industry wide. “The legacy of Laurie Strode is directly attributed to the late Debra Hill, (co-writer of the original “Halloween”),” Curtis says.  “The gentle soul of Laurie and that fierce warrior spirit are the legacy of Debra. As a feminist, she’d be very proud of how women are represented, how Laurie has evolved as a character—with the deep emotionality, incredible bravery and physical prowess she demonstrates in this trilogy. I know that she’d be incredibly proud of her contributions, which are forever.”

Watch “Halloween Ends” exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas starting October 12 – Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3, Alabang Town Center, Market Market, TriNoma, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, U.P.
