  • ARTablado Presents ‘Balintataw’ by Sining Taytay

Artist Henry Moore once said, “Art is the expression of imagination, not the duplication of reality.”

And while there is room for intellectual discourse in relation to his statement, the British sculptor does make a strong point. A true artist is not judged by skills alone or how good they follow rules but how they break it to bring forth something different.

    PR ARTablado Presents Balintataw 1

Fifteen artists from Taytay, Rizal showcase some of their latest works that encompass different artistic styles from portraits, surrealism, impressionism, and abstractionism, in ARTablado’s latest exhibit “Balintataw”.

“Balintataw” means imagination and there is abundance of it in this exhibition that brings forward into the limelight the ability of the artists to express their creative genius whether in drawing, painting, sculpture, and all the other medium afforded them. It is the collective hope by the members of “Tropang Pintor ng Taytay” that through the visual imagery they present, their messages and stories jump from the canvas and into its viewers’ consciousness.

    PR ARTablado Presents Balintataw 2

Linda Ang is a self-taught artist who became interested in painting when she moved to Taytay in 1996. An abstractionist who isn’t afraid to use strong colors, Linda translates into the canvas her views of everyday life.

Chino del Pilar is a fashion consultant for the Fashion Institute of the Philippines. Through his art, he is able to express his innate aesthetic knowledge, much like the gowns that he designs that have been described as being clean, elegant, and sophisticated.

At 73 years of age, Fernando Javellano is a sculptor who uses scrap metal and junk, found objects that most of us barely pay attention to. But when Javellano transforms them into his own art form, it becomes a different creature altogether, taking the form of a seahorse or an owl. A former Tagalog Komiks scriptwriter, Fernando bagged the “Honorable Mention” in the sculpture category of the AAP Annual Art Competition in 2013 and 2014.

    PR ARTablado Presents Balintataw 3

Ana Lacampuenga-Pellejera’s works impress in their almost photorealistic quality. Her oil on canvas pieces portray everything wonderful about the Filipino culture, from kids playing on swings, drawing on paper using crayons, lovers enjoying a traditional Filipino dance in barong and saya, and even something as normal as a father giving his child a ride on his back. The youngest daughter of the late artist Eduardo Lacampuenga, Ana is one artist to look out for.

Reggie Lim, another self-taught artist, draws influence from his hometown and much like others, experimented with different techniques, styles, and mediums. He finally decided to concentrate on still life with flowers and plants as his subjects.

Jerel Limayo is a multidisciplinary artist with a taste for the obscure and the abstract. His works can at times be muted and at some times loud, a clear indication of his strength as an artist who looks to immerse his viewers into another world through visuals and sounds.

Having been an inbetweener in Studio Next One and Fil-Cartoons at Hanna Barbera Philippines, it came natural for artist Joji Limayo to select pop art as his main subject. An awardee of several national art contests, he hopes to inspire his audience with his figures that though may be cartoonish in nature, actually presents a social commentary of modern days.

Ronald Limayo has had his works exhibited not just in Taytay but also in New York (2002, 2004). A multi-awarded artist in local competitions, Ronald is also a photographer who paints about in a manner that provides a sense relaxation to its viewers through the warm tones and the variety of elements he includes inside the canvas.

Gerry Marasigan is an architectural designer who previously worked for Francisco Manosa & Partners, Arcenas Payumo Andrew, The Hulbert Group Australia, and KPMA Malaysia. Gerry’s waterfalls series has an ethereal aspect to it that one can almost hear the waters and feel the overpowering sound of nature.

Jonalyn Villar-Montero has shown interest in art at a very young age and she paid it forward by being an art teacher and coach to grade school students. Her works focus on the portraiture of the female subject in her many different roles in life and she does this very well whether using charcoal, pastel, oil, or acrylic.

Victor Olano is a product of the University of the Philippines and his colorful works give an impression of calm whether it’s that of two parrots, a rainy night in town, or even a misty forest. Victor works for an international healthcare company.

John Perry Pellejera is a self-thought artist whose passion in visual arts delves in surrealism and contemporary paintings. He usually paints women whose faces are half-covered with a crown, which the artist says represents intellectuality and spirituality. The artist is a many-time finalist and semi-finalist in different local competitions such as the GSIS National Art Competition and Metrobank MADE.

Butch Reyes is an artist whose interest in tattoo led to his career to be considered self-made. He runs his Lucky 31 tattoo shop while continuing to paint surreal style and graffiti art.

James Sanorjo Jr. is a product of Bicol University in Legaspi City. A teacher for 22 years, he shared his passion for the arts to a new generation of young artists. His style portrays human figures and objects in a fantastical manner that livens up the space around it. He recently won first place in the 17th GSIS Art Competition.

Ponciano Zapanta is a long-time member of the Group Artists of Taytay where he served as president in 1996 and director from 1997 to the present. A multi-awarded artist here and abroad, he considers Alphonse Mucha, Godofredo Zapanta Sr., and Vicente Manansala as influential to his work. Despite having Godofredo Sr., his cousin, as a mentor once, “Ponz” says that it was Manansala’s transparent cubism he gravitates towards.

“Balintataw” runs until July 31 as part of Robinsons Land ARTablado’s continuing support for Filipino artist by providing them a second home at Robinsons Place Antipolo. Taytay artists are unique individuals and each has their own inspiration to draw from but it is their creative depth and maturity that brings them together.

“Balintataw” strengthens the belief that art has no boundaries, complementing ARTablado’s theme for the year is “BOUNDLESS”. These words perfectly define the profile of the artists it features because it gives them a platform to showcase their works regardless of age, gender, social status, or religious beliefs.

  • ‘The Gray Man’ is fast, big, loud, and oozing with charm

There’s a scene in one of the many Eastern European cities that is used as a location in The Russo Brothers’ ‘The Gray Man’ that is really the pinnacle of what this movie has to offer. It’s a fast-paced action sequence that feels like it plays out for a good 15 minutes.

There’s a shoot-out in a public plaza that escalates into a full-blown war zone that involves a high-speed car chase with a tram, high-powered assault rifles, and a beautiful luxury sports car, while the lead character carries on a gunfight inside the train. It’s a huge setup with explosions and people almost getting run over, cars toppling over and exploding. It’s fast-paced and hard-hitting and the stunt choreography and camera coverage are incredible.

Watching this at the cinema in a special advanced screening makes me wish that people will get to watch this movie in this format rather than on their phones or laptop screens because it’s the kind of blockbuster spectacle that is made for the big screen.

‘The Gray Man’ has an old-school action film vibe, where the bad guys are completely lacking in nuance and the story is thin but the enjoyment comes from all the spills and thrills.

It begins with an introduction to our protagonist, Ryan Gosling’s unnamed character who is recruited by the CIA to become a dispensable killing machine, a Black Ops assassin with no record at all for plausible deniability. He is given the name Six and the film immediately jumps forward in time to his most recent mission, where he discovers that the change of guard in US politics meant the Sierra program that he is part of is being taken down and his life is in danger.

Now, on the run, he has to escape the new bosses at the CIA who are tying up loose ends.

But how do you catch one of the deadliest assassins in the world? By hiring the equally skilled and dangerous (and possibly sociopathic) private contractor Lloyd Hansen, played by Chris Evans. In less than 15 minutes, you have two of Hollywood’s charming and attractive leading men, Gosling and Evans, battling it out over Eastern Europe and it’s a joy to watch.

    The Gray Man review

Gosling’s Six is a quiet, lone wolf type, though he is not above an occasional witty remark. We know how charming he can be from films like ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ and ‘La La Land’ but he tones it down for the gruff, silent killer type who grunts as much as he speaks but despite his frighteningly impressive action hero image in this film, there’s a relatability that he brings to Six that attaches himself to audience pretty quickly.

On the other hand, Evans is obviously having a blast playing the villain. He’s as charming as he is brutal and sadistic and cruel. And he’s also unafraid to bring out his excellent comedic timing for some really great comic moments that keep the energy up.

The film runs a little over 2 hours and surprisingly, there’s very little in terms of character development or a story arc. There’s no complicated plot nor any overly ambitious save-the-world narrative involved in this film. It’s a brawl and a gunfight and it’s loud and explosive. Everything from cars, trains, airplanes, and helicopters at some point explode or topple over. Our heroes get punched, kicked, stabbed, and even shot and still manage to carry on and fight.

    The Gray Man review

And it’s this simplicity that gives ‘The Gray Man’ a hollowness to it – no real exploration of the abuse of government power, the effects of geopolitics on this scale, the cost and value of human lives – but it also makes it really easy to watch and really fun to just jump aboard on.

At the same time, directors Joe and Anthony Russo feel like they directed this film specifically for the Netflix viewer – people watching at home on their laptops or phones – and so they push the story down and ramp up the action and fast cuts and pacing so as to not allow the viewers to get distracted at all. Never is there a moment for you to press pause to answer the phone or to take a break to do house chores or online school work.

The film feels like they are aware that the medium this film will be shown, through streaming, means they can put what feels like a 15-minute flashback scene in the middle of the story, as they pivot the narrative towards a different direction.

There’s a freshness to the way this film is made because as big and loud as the film gets (and it constantly peaks) it doesn’t feel like it has to abide by any certain expectations as other films do. Of the many Netflix films I’ve seen in this genre like ‘Extraction’ or ‘The Old Guard,’ this is the one I feel really fits perfectly for streaming.

    The Gray Man review

‘The Gray Man’ may not be deep or even moving, but it’s a whole lot of fun and the whole cast – from Gosling to Evans, to Ana de Armas and Jessica Henwick, to Rege-Jean Page, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton – it’s loaded with charisma and screen presence. I hope this becomes a hit because, as it is based on a series of books by Mark Greaney, they plan for this to be a franchise and I love to see more of it.

    My Rating:

    5 stars - Don't Look Up review

  • 10 Workplace Sitcoms to Stream If You’re Missing the Office

As adults, we spend most of our days at the workplace surrounded by colleagues we treat as a community or even family, while we do our part and stay productive. But then the pandemic happened and we found ourselves separated by a remote work setup. While working from home has its many advantages, part of us also miss the office, its convenience, and the people that breathe life into it.

If you’re still working at home and are missing the workplace setup, then maybe you need to binge a show that will give you some laughs while recreating that office atmosphere! On this list, we’ve rounded up such shows for your much-needed dose of workplace humor.

    The Office

The American remake of The Office is deemed one of the best comedy shows out there and for good reason. The series is presented as a mockumentary featuring the day-to-day shenanigans of the office workers at a paper company. The team includes the likable Jim, the shy receptionist Pam, the competitive salesman Dwight, and their high-energy boss Michael Scott. Stream The Office on Amazon Prime Video.

    Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s workplace is a precinct and it follows a team of cops, each with their own colorful personality. The series’ main characters include the talented but childish detective Jake Peralta, his loyal friend Charles Boyle, the competitive Amy Santiago, and the seemingly cold captain Ray Holt. Stream Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Netflix.

    The IT Crowd

The IT Crowd, as its title suggests, follows folks working in IT with the show poking fun at the knowledge gap between the IT crowd and people who can’t handle their computers. The show begins with Jen Barber who lied her way into being employed in the IT department of a business giant in London, despite knowing nothing about computers. She finds her office in the company building’s dingy basement, where she is joined by two socially-challenged computer “nerds” working as the company’s IT support. Stream The IT Crowd on Netflix.

    Parks & Recreation

This series follows government employees at the Indiana Parks and Recreation department. The show mainly revolves around Leslie Knope, a mid-level bureaucrat who is trying to beautify her town by turning an abandoned construction site into a community park. But the simple mission is made complicated by her colleagues such as the selfish Tom Haverford and her anti-government bureaucrat boss Ron Swanson.

    Scrubs

Scrubs is set in a hospital and follows a group of medical students in their internship. Most of the show is told through the unique point of view of the main character John Michael “J.D.” Dorian. Throughout the show, JD alongside his fellow interns Elliott Reid and Christopher Turk, as well as their colleagues at the Sacred Heart Hospital encounter challenging cases while navigating their relationships. Stream it on Amazon Prime Video.

    2 Broke Girls

This show follows two broke girls Max and Caroline who are trying to find their ticket to success together. Max is a streetwise waitress working in a Brooklyn diner while Caroline used to be a rich girl who must now work as a waitress to make ends meet. When Max discovers that Caroline can bake delicious cupcakes, the two team up to kick off a cupcake business. Also part of the diner’s friendly faces are their boss Han Lee, the upbeat cook Oleg, and the old cashier Earl.

    Abbott Elementary

Presented in a mockumentary format, Abbott Elementary follows the lives of teachers working in the underfunded, predominantly Black public school, Willard R. Abbott Elementary School. The staff includes second grade teacher Janine Teagues, history teacher Jacob Hill, substitute teacher Gregory Eddie, kindergarten’s Barbara Howard, and the tone-deaf school principal Ava Coleman.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO-_7oi-61Y

    Superstore

Superstore follows the megastore Cloud 9 employees and their daily grind filled with annoying bargainers, riotous sales, and boring training sessions. Hardworking Cloud 9 employee Amy is trying to juggle her responsibilities alongside her clueless manager Glen, the tough assistant Dina, the new hire Jonah, the sarcastic Garrett, and the sweet Cheyenne.

    Mythic Quest

This series focuses on the office workers of the video game studio that produces the fictional MMORPG Mythic Quest. While building the fantasy world and sustaining the video game for the players seem quite the challenge, the minds behind Mythic Quest actually face bigger challenges within the office. The show’s roster of characters includes creator Ian Grimm, lead engineer Poppy Li, monetization head Brad Bakshi, and head writer C.W. Longbottom. Stream Mythic Quest on Apple TV+.

    Space Force

Space Force is another series from the team-up of Steve Carell and writer Greg Daniels of The Office. In this Netflix sitcom, Carell plays General Mark Naird who was just tasked to helm the sixth branch of the US Armed Forces. As the head of the US Space Force, Naird must manage a chaotic team to bring the military to the moon by 2024. Stream Space Force on Netflix.

  • Self-love advocates Heart Evangelista and Kotex dare women to love themselves more

Women are appreciated for being natural caregivers and, as a society, we have always applauded them for it. However admirable though, it is often at the expense of caring for others that these same women are found in an all-too-familiar situation of not having enough time or energy for themselves. That is why feminine care brand Kotex Philippines and self-love ambassador Heart Evangelista have once again teamed up in challenging women to #DareToLoveYourselfMore. Together, they aim to remind every woman to keep prioritizing self-love and encourage them to start celebrating those who actively choose to.

    Kotex PR

“We are forever grateful for the mothers, wives, and sisters in our lives who constantly take care of us but as much as we praise them for this, still not enough is given to women who make the conscious choice to love themselves. Kotex is a believer of self-love and we encourage all women to dare to love yourself unapologetically simply because you deserve it,” said Ann Avellaneda, Brand Manager of Kotex Philippines.

For this year’s challenge, Kotex released a limited-edition #LuxeWithLove kit that contains packs of its luxuriously comfortable pads and panties. Wrapped in a specially designed painting made by Heart Evangelista, the curated kit invites every woman to fill up their box as a reminder to never let themselves run on empty.

With every purchase, shoppers can also get a chance to win a self-love weekend getaway and a meet & greet with Heart Evangelista – all while experiencing the luxury of comfort with Kotex because they deserve nothing less. To join, they must simply scan the QR code found inside every kit, fill out the form, post a self-love letter to themselves on Instagram or Facebook, tag the official Kotex page, and use the official hashtag #DareToLoveYourselfMore. Complete promo mechanics can be found here: https://bit.ly/KotexDTLYMMechanics

    Kotex PR 2

Much like Kotex, Heart Evangelista has been a self-love advocate for years now. While it has taken a while for her to not feel ashamed about prioritizing herself, she has finally learned to put herself first. Along with staying in shape, eating the right food, and being healthy, Heart has also found an amazing way to practice self-love through her art.

“Painting plays a huge role in my self-love advocacy. It’s my time for myself. It’s my time to express myself freely without anyone giving me instructions. It makes my soul happy in a way,” Heart shares.

With painting as her main avenue of expression, each work often tells a different story. Her favorite muses are women, painted in different canvases whether it’s on bags, murals, clothes, and now in a box. The design of the #LuxeWithLove kit is a beautiful representation of this advocacy as it was inspired by her self-love journey, travels around the world, and the many women that she’s met along the way.

“No matter what form, shape or size, they were beautiful so that’s why I wanted to come up with that painting. Women, just proud of being themselves,” Heart adds.

Heart stresses that daring to love yourself is something we need to be constantly reminded of but hopes one day it will come as naturally as taking care of others. Whether it’s writing little daily affirmations, going out on a solo date, or simply getting pads that are a little more expensive but works wonders for you – spoiling yourself with better things will always pay off. Always be proud of who you are and how you take care of yourself because the most rewarding love is still the one from within us.

As Heart says, “Self-love isn’t being selfish. It’s having self-worth. It’s building yourself up. It’s preparing you for greater things and it’s preparing you to love other people in a better way.”

To date, hundreds of women have already come out in support of this self-love advocacy; each sharing how they’ve learned to love themselves more everyday and pledged to continue doing so. Patricia Basmayor said, “I learned to love myself more amidst my mental health issues. I became kinder to myself. I feel you should too.” Maureen Agaren also shared, “It’s alright to give yourself more. Remember the value of being ‘YOU’ and the LOVE that yourself deserves.”

All women were recognized and awarded for their contributions in spreading this important advocacy. Now, it’s your turn.

The #DareToLoveYourselfMore challenge runs until July 30. Join today when you get your own #LuxeWithLove kit that is now available for purchase online via Lazada and Shopee. Remember, with every purchase, shoppers can also get a chance to win a self-love weekend getaway and a meet & greet with Heart Evangelista. Complete promo mechanics can be found here: https://bit.ly/KotexDTLYMMechanics
