  • Tom Cruise Takes Us on a High-Octane Ride in ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’

Welcome to a world where the impossible becomes possible. Tom Cruise once again proves why he’s an unmatched action titan, as he performs breath-stopping stunts in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” From high-altitude motorbike jumps to intense speedflying, join us as we dive into the heart-pounding action that’s set to hit the screens on July 12.

The Art of Perfecting a Stunt

On the first day of principal photography, Tom Cruise made a spectacular entrance into the production of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. In a move that would make most stuntmen break out in a cold sweat, he literally dived headfirst into action. From a ramp perched precariously on Norway’s formidable Helsetkopen mountain, towering 1,200 meters above sea level, he catapulted a custom-made Honda CRF 250. With nerves of steel, the actor hurtled into the 4,000-foot-deep ravine, deploying his parachute with only 500 feet to spare. It was an awe-inspiring display of skill and bravery.

When he landed, director Christopher McQuarrie, and the small crew of his Mission co-stars who had assembled to watch the seminal cinematic sequence from the safety of video village, breathed a collective sigh of relief. And this was only the beginning. The actor undertook this gravity-defying feat seven more times, ensuring cinematic perfection in every frame.

    High-Octane Bonds on Set

Simon Pegg, a good friend of Cruise’s and who’s played Benji Dunn across several Mission movies, was on set the day his pal jumped that motorbike off that mountain, and he vividly recalls the terror of looking on, helpless. He will also, he says, never forget the rhyme he and the crew used to say, to keep spirits up, no matter how stressful it got. “On the day, when it happens, you’re just waiting to hear ‘good canopy,’” Pegg says. “Because, ‘If you don’t hear that, then Tom gone splat.’”

    mi7 00852r resized

Breaking Boundaries, One Stunt at a Time

In his illustrious career, Cruise has braved incredible feats, be it clinging onto a plane mid-flight or performing the world-first HALO jump on film. “Every time I went off the ramp, it was dangerous. It was risking my life. And we wanted to keep that to a minimum,” Cruise says. “We have a saying on Mission: Impossible movies: ‘Don’t be safe. Be competent.’” He says that of course knowing the extensive training regimens and rigorous safety protocols that surround every element of the production.

The stunt was, by any measure, the most dangerous of Cruise’s career – which is saying something given that in previous Mission films he has, among other jaw-dropping endeavors, swung around the outside of the world’s tallest building (Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, in Ghost Protocol), hung onto the side of an Airbus A400M while it was in flight (in Rogue Nation) and launched himself out of a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III from a height of 25,000 feet, opening his chute just 2,000 feet from the ground and becoming the first person ever to execute a High Altitude Low Opening – or HALO – jump on film (in Fallout).

    mi7 ff epk 032r resized

After landing the epic motorbike jump, Cruise raises the bar with another unbelievable jump stunt in the film. One pivotal scene in the film finds Cruise’s Ethan Hunt in a situation where his only exit is, once again, to jump. However, it’s not quite that simple.

“We’ve made Missions together, and have done a lot of stunts. This is unlike anything we’ve done before,” Cruise said to prep the crew before completing one of the most dangerous stunts ever captured on film: Speedflying.

Done by very few people around the world, the sport of speedflying involves launch by foot, gliding down mountainsides. It is similar to paragliding, however, it is done with a very small canopy – or wing, as it is called.

“Speedflying is one of the most dangerous sports in the world, and it was something we had been exploring for a long time,” McQuarrie shares. “One of the things that is particularly dangerous about speedflying is the close proximity to the ground that you’re flying. And the other is the risk that the canopy can collapse. It’s very unpredictable.”

McQuarrie adds, “The challenge when you are making any action film is normally hiding the fact that your actor is not actually doing the stunt and that a stunt man is performing it for them. The opposite is true for Mission: Impossible. We have an actor who does his own stunts and we’re constantly trying to develop technologies to show him doing it. And with speedflying this was an extremely, extremely difficult challenge.”

    mi7 ff 362r resized

“I can’t wait for audiences to see it,” Cruise says as he smiles at the thought.

  • Nicole Laurel’s Highly Anticipated New Song ‘What Matters Most’ Set for July 7th Release

In an imperfect world where friendships are fleeting, where money slips though our fingers faster than we can count it, when we often run out of time right before we reach the top of the climb, We are reminded to celebrate the things and people that matter most … while we still can.

    Nicole 4 resized 20230701 041418811

I see the little changes around me- friends that come and go, loves and losses and the lessons they bring, growing pains that come with each season… telling me to start over. As I take another trip around the sun, I would like to take this time to celebrate WHAT MATTERS MOST — all of you. This song is a little birthday treat to everyone who has remained in my life and inspired me to continue making music. “What Matters Most” was written with sleepless eyes in the midst of a hot summer sunrise after wrapping up another production session. I recall going down the media rabbit hole to de-brief from another song we had just finished. Producer Gabe Dandan and I found ourselves immersed in the soundtrack of the film “Cadillac Records” featuring blues greats such as Etta James, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf.

“The inspiration for ‘What Matters Most’ was mostly quartet music from the 50s-60s. Nicole’s vocal versatility spans many styles and genres of music but I think she sounds at home and authentic in this setting.”

Sometimes you just have to let songs that draw inspirations from classic roots retain that classic sound. “The main focus of the simple no nonsense arrangement was to keep the song era-accurate with modern treatment and post production.”

    Nicole 1 resized 20230701 041417571

“No doubt “What Matters Most” is a love song… I wanted to carve a little a space in time where I could freely celebrate love and the astronomical feeling of being loved through and through. I had these lyrics and a simple melody for this song scribbled somewhere for weeks before. Bits and pieces of the song were scattered in lost minutes between production sessions of other songs. I had also casually jammed versions of this theme with some friends before but it was after revisiting the blues greats that the song and lyrics took its final form. We finished recording the demo at 7:30am and for the sake of staying loyal to the song’s theme…. went out for a stack of celebratory pancakes.” – Nicole

“Working with Nicole is smooth because our writing chemistry is instant and natural, we have a dynamic where we can both freely express ourselves and understand our creative palettes and processes, this is also why we get along so well. She usually begins by humming a melody, then I make chords that work with it and we build it up from there.” – Gabe

Gabe and I called Dan Gil (veteran producer and composer) to join in and take over keys recording duties, Gavino Sabalburo’s drums and Timpani recordings from Marvin Querido and ONQ studio made for a wonderful companionship and Gabe took over bass and guitar duties. Veteran engineer Angee Rozul took over tracking duties. It was a no-frills recording with simple instrumentation laced with incessant laughter and a cheerful round of drinks afterwards. There were times I was tempted to add a horns section or back-up vocals, but this time around I think the simplicity was needed. I was convinced by my co-musicians to keep it simple, light and happy. I probably have a lot of things to ‘hugot’ about…. and yes I have been writing about that too… Pero ayoko muna humugot… this isn’t the song for it… saka na ‘yan…. Let’s just stay in love for a little while… kahit mga five-ish minutes lang and celebrate the things that matter most.

“There wasn’t much post production to be done, at most it was just choosing from ad-lib takes and minimal curing for some instruments. Nicole does all her vocal comp-ing in her home studio. When the recording was done we sent it to Mr. Waxie G. Joaquin to mix and master the track and bring it to life.” – Gabe

Waxified Sound Production indeed brought the sound back to that retro era with their post production and spacial audio experience. The track was mixed and mastered in Dolby Atmos by: Waxie G. Joaquin of Waxiefied Sound Production.

“What Matters Most.” is a sonic ride back in time to a 60s diner in a dreamy, creamy-white Cadillac. This five minute track encapsulates that nostalgic feeling of falling freely in love— no regrets, no holding back. A classic yet crispy new take on no-nonsense blues. Nicole’s one-of-a-kind vocals are a red-hot lipstick stain on a tall strawberry milkshake- tastefully showcased with the perfect balance of grit, grease, soulfulness and vulnerability while delectably dripping over the band’s perfectly ripened musical sensibilities and honest expression—the cherry on top.

“In the coming months you can definitely expect more music in a spectrum of different styles and stories, We enjoy creating with different musicians, so each song is a treat, making music is our favourite thing to do.” – Gabe

There are countless songs in progress as of today, it’s a matter of staying in love with the process and putting in the work to release each one into the world. patience, trust, time are all part of it, but staying in love with the process is what I am learning is perhaps the most important part. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been part of my life and music journey thus far. I am grateful for you all and for all the God given chances to make music for you. Let’s celebrate love and make every minute matter with the ones who matter most.

The music video is set to be released mid July with a double music video launch event (Nicole is set to launch another secret music video) The event is open to public and will be held at 9pm in Salon De Ning, Manila Peninsula Hotel on August 1, 2023. • REVIEW: Dissecting Henry Cavill’s final bow as Geralt of Rivia in ‘The Witcher’ season 3

As the final season of Henry Cavill to playing Geralt of Rivia, the very Witcher that is mentioned in the series’ title, one can expect something big and grand. After all, the first season and it’s 8 episodes took its time to really familiarize the audience with the world and laid down the backstory of its three central characters – Geralt, Yennefer of Vengerberg (played by Anya Chalotra), and Ciri of Cintra (played by Freya Allan) – right before making them meet by the finale of season one. Season two began to lay the foundations of the political world that surrounds the Continent, the fictional world where all of this is set. More importantly, it sets up Ciri as the goal for many kings and wizards. She is instrumental to the future of the Continent and she is under the protection of both Geralt and Yennefer.

With all the pieces at play, the world is set, it is very interesting that the first two episodes of the third season is set in playing out a fantasy of the three main characters – running away from all those who seek out Ciri, Geralt and Yennefer and Ciri play house as Yennefer teaches Ciri how to control her immense magical potential; for the first time, these three characters are operating in an almost normal, family-like setting – and it gives the three a taste of what they have been missing, a chance to reconcile from past hurts in the previous season, and something to hold on to in relation to what’s about to come in the rest of the season.

Already, we see distinct changes in Geralt (he’s smiling more, he’s letting down his guard), while Yennefer has found herself more emotionally open to two people, while Ciri is discovering her resolve. The first two episodes are necessary because while this may be what the characters want for themselves – a chance to just be a family and away from all the horrors of this fictional world – but we know that will not last.

One cannot outrun their destiny forever.

Now that the world has been set up, ‘The Witcher” season three puts all of this to motion. All the characters now are making their moves, secrets are uncovered, and everyone is getting closer and closer to Ciri. Geralt and Yennefer have discovered that the best defense may be a strategic offense but are also in a quandary as Ciri has grown up and has come to the conclusion that maybe running away and staying neutral isn’t the solution. Maybe, as a queen, she can make some truly lasting changes.

    The Witcher Season 3 Netflix

‘The Witcher’ season three is divided into two volumes and the first five episodes is one massive build up that seems to be pushing Ciri into making a choice about her future. Geralt and Yennefer are now coming to terms with the position they’ve chosen to be her de facto parents. Can they support their child now that she’s taken the whole world as her responsibility

As the story goes on high gear, there’s less opportunities for Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia to battle strange and frightening creatures like in the past seasons. There’s no time. There are too many characters and a lot of politics at play. In fact, it’s less of Geralt’s story now than it is Ciri’s, as Geralt and Yennefer are more left to be her support as she has to come to a decision (which will probably be explored in the last three episodes of the season to be released on July 27).

The show is not without its social commentary: the Continent is a divided land and all the political strife that is keeping it from thriving is from rampant greed, hunger for power, discrimination, and vengeance. The world is rife with narcissistic monarchs who would wge war for their own vanity and their own beliefs without regard to the damage they’ve done to the world around them. And interestingly enough, even Geralt’s stance of staying neutral and not taking a side is put into question.

But even the show is aware that in these massive games amongst kings and queens, there are no easy choices to be made. They are all evil and corrupt in their own way.

The Witcher Season 3 Henry Cavill

With only three episodes to go, Cavill is leaving the show (to be replaced by Liam Hemsworth) with a changed Geralt of Rivia. He has taken the character from the grim, emotionless Witcher from the first season to a softer, warmer father figure to Allan’s Ciri. He’s managed to bridge the character to this space, which will probably culminate to a major choice he will have to make in the finale but as Ciri’s father and not her mentor or guardian.

If it’s as I suspect, it would be a fitting way to leave the show and a wonderful gift he will leave for Hemsworth. In three seasons, he’s managed to evolve this character so that the person taking over has somewhere new to take it. He definitely will be missed but the show has propped up the rest of the characters and the world that Geralt is no longer at the center of it.

  • Movie Review: A nostalgia play, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ is meant for old fans and not out to make new ones

‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Disney’ is meant to be a finale, a closing of the Indiana Jones storyline and character and director James Mangold has spoken about the project as a story about how time catches up with us and wishes to explore Indiana Jones as a “hero at sunset.” It would have been an interesting concept considering the way the current time views the practice of Western archeology and the way Indiana Jones’ usual mantra of “it belongs in a museum” carries with it imperialist connotations. It would have been very interesting to watch the final film in the franchise deal with an aging Harrison Ford and a reconciliation of the work that he’s been doing in the first four films.

But that’s not the movie that we get. In order to stay rooted to the soul and essence of the previous films of the franchise, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ is just one grand adventure that gives us an aged Indiana Jones. He is now a relic and a grumpy old man, who fights with his younger neighbours who play their rock music really loud, or is retiring from his teaching position, where his classes are now filled with students who are asleep or uncaring of what he is teaching. It’s a far cry from the Indiana Jones of previous installments. Ford, who is very spritely for an 80 year old man, moves and feels like his age. At a 154 minutes, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ is one big adventure reminiscent of ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.’ It’s one big chase scene after another, one big fight scene after another big fight scene. It can be exhausting to watch and even with all the stuntmen and invasive John Williams music (complete with variations of the Indiana Jones theme for added effect) at full use, it’s hard to imagine Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones doing all the things he’s doing in this movie.

In fact, at some point, I began timing each fight scene and chase scene, and figured for every 15 to 20 minute action sequence, there’s about 3 to 5 minutes of story. ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ is relentless in its adventure plot. It refuses to slow down to work out the relationships between Indiana Jones and his god daughter, Helena Shaw (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge). It feels as if the movie is afraid that if it slows down, inertia will strike and Indiana Jones, at that age, may need to take a long break before the next big sequence.

And it’s a shame because Waller-Bridge’s Helena Shaw presents an interesting counter-point to Ford’s Indiana Jones. Helena is a darker character, with a questionable past and questionable motives and practices; but she is just as bright, brilliant, resourceful, and physically capable as Jones in his prime. Unlike Indiana Jones, she has no lofty ideals about what to do with her knowledge or skill sets. She even manages the only commentary I noticed in the whole movie about Western Imperialization. I wanted more of it and thought that to explore the relationship of the estranged godfather and goddaughter was a great space to really reconcile Indiana Jones in the modern world.

But that’s not the movie we get. We get an overblown adventure story that brings us from Nazi Germany in the 40s to New York and the Mediterranean during the time of the moon landing and then, because of the particular qualities of the supernatural relic, the eponymous Dial of Destiny, to some places in the past.

The movie is less concerned with reconciliation for the concept surrounding Indiana Jones that it is to celebrate the character and to create a satisfying conclusion to the characte and, in essence, for the fans who love him and the movies of their youth. The film as a whole is about capitalizing on nostalgia. It doesn’t seem invested in contextualizing Indiana Jones for younger audiences or future generations. Much like a relic in a museum, it’s meant to be seen and enjoyed as it is, outside the context of the changing world around it.

Indiana Jones is now just a product of its time and it eventually finds it story closed because it can no longer find its own place in the modern world.
