Franchise veteran Rebecca Ferguson, who plays Ilsa Faust, says that of the three Mission movies she’s starred in so far, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has seen her pull off her most impactful action sequences. “What’s the point in doing a Mission movie if you’re not going to do the odd stunt?” she says. “I think one of the reasons why Mission is such a love of my life is the training. It’s not knowing what I’m in for in the next film. I love the fact that you never know what is going to be asked of your character to train. Whether it is a knife fight or a gun fight or martial arts or perhaps a sword fight, which was introduced in this [film] for me.”
Exciting new action scenes? Way to go, Ilsa! According to director Christopher McQuarrie, who joined the franchise in Rogue Nation, the same time that Ferguson did, he, Cruise and Ferguson have all steadfastly refused to let the relationship between Ilsa and Ethan slip into the tropes that have often plagued the spy genre in the past. “I was never interested in Ilsa just being a typical love interest for Ethan,” McQuarrie says.
Another familiar face audiences will see in Dead Reckoning Part One is Vanessa Kirby’s morally fluid Alanna Mitsopolis, aka The White Widow, who was introduced in Fallout.
“There are a lot more twists and turns in this one, the stakes are definitely higher,” Kirby says of her character, a powerful and cunning arms dealer, black marketeer, and political intriguer at the center of a dark web of spies, smugglers and cutthroats. “The White Widow really goes through something in this. She seems impenetrable. It’s a lot more complex and emotionally challenging for everybody.”
Dead Reckoning Part One continues the long-established Mission tradition of adding to its already enviable roster an ensemble of new, dynamic, and formidable characters. A prime example is Hayley Atwell’s Grace.
Rebecca Ferguson
“She’s an artful dodger, a lone wolf,” Atwell says of Grace, who, when she steals the key to a powerful weapon from Ethan at the start of the film, sets the CIA on her and his tail, lighting the fuse on a globe-trotting chase.
Atwell describes the dynamic between Grace and Ethan as flirty, fun and spontaneous. “Grace and Ethan are two people who shouldn’t be in the same room together but are forced to be because they have a shared common goal. The more she exasperates him, the funnier it becomes.”

When last we met the Lambert family, astral projectors Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Dalton (Ty Simpkins) had survived multiple trips into The Further. Dalton had been kidnapped by a demon… Josh had rescued him, only to be trapped in The Further while a ghost possesses his body in our world… that ghost, in Josh’s body, had rampaged through his house, trying to kill his family… and Dalton had ventured back into The Further to find his real father and bring him back.
“After the second film, I felt there was nothing more to be done or said or explored with the Lambert family,” says Wilson who, aside from returning as Josh Lambert, also marks his directorial debut with Insidious: The Red Door, opening across Philippine cinemas July 5. “I had saved my son, been saved myself, been possessed; I had gone through just about everything you can do in a horror movie. The biggest question that I asked, and that I wanted to pose to the audience, was what happens to a family after ten years, when you’ve been hypnotized in order to forget your family trauma?
“In hindsight, that’s probably not the healthiest way to deal with trauma: ‘It didn’t happen, you’ll forget this.’ I wanted to unpack that,” Wilson continues.
Rose Byrne
In Insidious: The Red Door, the epic conclusion to the terrifying saga of the Lambert family, the story picks up as the original cast reunites for the third chapter in the family’s saga and fifth and final film in the blockbuster horror franchise, following two prequels. Ten years after the events of the second film, Josh and Renai (Rose Byrne) have divorced, as Josh struggles to piece together a life that seems to have major holes he can’t fill. Dalton, now a young adult, is heading off to an East Coast art college, and has a strained relationship with his father.
“It’s stilted because of the events that have happened, and they don’t really know why,” says Wilson. “They have missing chapters – holes in their memory – and there’s resentment from Dalton’s side. Two men who can’t quite express their desire to make their relationship better because they don’t know where it went wrong. And yet they’re tied together in more ways than one, and Insidious fans know exactly what that means.”
Ty Simpkins
“I love the fact that we were able to bring the original cast back together to bring the Lamberts’ saga to a close,” says producer Jason Blum. “Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, of course, but also Ty Simpkins, Lin Shaye, Leigh Whannell, Angus Sampson and Andrew Astor. Getting to see how the cast has aged – especially the actors who were children and have grown into young men – underscores the heart of the story for me: that this is a family finding their way as they move through their lives.”
Reuniting the cast became a central pivot point of Wilson’s direction of the film – his reason for wanting to do it, and later, a driving force in his vision for the film.
Patrick Wilson
Says Wilson, “I wanted the movie to feel like it closes out the Lambert trilogy – if you’ve seen the first two movies, you get a feeling for them – but I’ve shown it to people who know nothing of the Insidious franchise, and I know, you don’t need to see those movies to understand.”
The original cast from Insidious is back with Patrick Wilson (also making his directorial debut), Ty Simpkins, Rose Byrne and Andrew Astor. Also starring Sinclair Daniel and Hiam Abbass. Produced by Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan and Leigh Whannell. The screenplay is written by Scott Teems from a story by Leigh Whannell, based on characters created by Leigh Whannell.

And who do the Skrulls trust when they’ve lost their home and their planet, and the man they’ve placed their trust in for years—who promised to find them a new homeland—lets them down?
The Invasion Begins
With Fury’s promise left unfulfilled, the renegade Skrulls lay their claim on Earth, taking over important organizations and governments to set up their plans for complete takeover. It’s up to Fury and his allies to form the last line of defense and save the world once more.
Witness Nick Fury’s return to the MCU and don’t miss Secret Invasion, now available exclusively on Disney+.
DreamWorks Animation dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a quirky teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed in “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken”, with the titular role voiced by Lana Condor, who skyrocketed to global stardom as Lara Jean from the highly-successful YA (young adult) franchise, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
The ocean is a mysterious world—one that land dwellers can only begin to imagine. That world—and the fantastic creatures that make their home beneath the waves—has long been a source of fascination for Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Kirk DeMicco. With his fourth animated feature, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, DeMicco borrows the best ideas from folklore and myth to tell the relatable story of a not-so-ordinary teenager who, after discovering a surprising truth about herself and her family lineage, learns to embrace her inner hero.
“As a filmmaker, I’ve always been interested in subverting expectations in my storytelling,” DeMicco says. “When it came to Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, one of the things that excited me most was the opportunity to do just that with the mythology of the krakens and mermaids. Traditionally, the kraken has been portrayed as a monstrous creature, something to be feared and avoided at all costs. But in this film, we wanted to explore the idea of krakens as powerful and benevolent protectors of the sea. Similarly, we wanted to take the traditional image of mermaids and turn it on its head, creating a more complex and nuanced mythology that challenged audience expectations.”
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken beautifully walks the line between character-driven comedy and larger, impactful themes of identity, family responsibility, love and honest acceptance. When the film opens, Ruby is a charmingly awkward, insecure 16-year-old who spends time with her close-knit group of friends when she’s not tutoring her crush, Connor. She’s desperate to invite him to prom—even if it is a post-colonial patriarchal construct—but her mom, Agatha, has forbidden her to attend. The event is being held on a boat, and if Agatha has one rule, it’s that Ruby cannot go near the water. Which wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t live in Oceanside, where, you know, hanging out on the pier is essentially the number one pastime.
“The film is an inter-generational story that taps into the cultural chorus surrounding teen empowerment,” DreamWorks Animation President Margie Cohn says. “We feel that Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, has the potential to become the girl-power movie of the summer, and, we hope, a touchstone for the generations of girls still to come.”
There’s an old school sex comedy vibe that lingers around the premise of director Gene Stupnitsky’s ‘No Hard Feelings,’ which features a down-on-her-luck 32 year old Maddie (played by Jennifer Lawrence), who takes on a strange Craigslist posting from helicopter parents who wants to bring their sheltered son out of his shell by having sex with him before he hits college. The risque subject matter runs along the lines of films like ‘American Pie’ and even the older films like ‘Risky Business’ and ‘Porky’s.’ These older examples did not have today’s progressive – and even militant and extreme progressive values – to contend with in the forming of their comedies, which makes ‘No Hard Feelings’ a delicate matter to attend to.
After all, how does one even find the humor in a story about parents manipulating circumstances so that their son can be devirginized before college? In an era when consent is vital, how does Stupnitsky and co-writer John Phillips go about this?
Laird (Matthew Broderick) and Allison (Laura Benanti) in Columbia Pictures’ NO HARD FEELINGS
Never, in the film, does the film glorify nor romanticize what the parents of Percy (played by Andrew Barth Feldman) are doing for him. In fact, all throughout the film, Maddie and her friends question the parents and make fun of helicopter parents and Maddie is constantly trying to defend or justify her taking the job in the first place.
Jennifer Lawrence and Director Gene Stupnitsky on the set of Columbia Pictures’ NO HARD FEELINGS
Key to the narrative is Maddie’s need for the car that is being offered for the service. As payment for “dating” their son, Percy’s parents are giving her a car, one that Maddie needs as an Uber driver, whose car was repossessed. Maddie needs the money to save her home that her deceased mother had left her.
Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) and Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) in Columbia Pictures’ NO HARD FEELINGS
It’s a desperate time that calls for desperate measures and this is where Stupnitsky and Phillips lean into in their film. Instead of focusing on the sex aspect, they put the focus on how desperate Jennifer Lawrence’s Maddie is to get that car: the crazy situations they put her in, the physical comedy that arrives with slapstick situations that gets her very, very hurt – and which we can laugh at because she’s not a very nice person, after all, she’s willing to seduce a young man for a car – and, interestingly enough, the areas by which the generation gap between the 32-year old Maddie and the 19-year old Percy are different in relation to sex.
Because Percy is not an easy target. He’s a loner with severe trust issues from a story point that is explored as Maddie gets to know him. What’s interesting is that the techniques that Maddie thinks boys his age would find sexy are completely not sexy to the boys of this generation that is Percy’s age. Maddie is from a time without these progressive values and so everything she does is a red flag and brings out a defensive stance on the young man. It leads to some very funny situations.
Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) and Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) in Columbia Pictures’ NO HARD FEELINGS.
There’s so much that this film could have gone for, though: the film could have really delved into the world of helicopter parents, or really fully explored the difference between the attitudes of two generations about sex. One of the funniest lines, to me, is seen on the trailer, when Maddie is searching for Percy at a house party and she goes to each room and finds all of Percy’s peers just hanging out and on their phones and Maddies says under her breath, “Doesn’t anyone ever f#$& anymore?” or something like that.
Unfortunately, Stupnitsky and Phillips merely use these as punchlines – making fun of helicopter parents, making fun of calling Jennifer Lawrence an old woman, – rather than really go hard on the social implications of these concepts. ‘No Hard Feelings’ prefers to stay in the area of light comedy, making full use of Lawrence’s versatility and bravado and Feldman’s charm and earnestness. The two have amazing chemistry and they really make the whole thing work.
Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) and Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) in Columbia Pictures’ NO HARD FEELINGS.
Much like the old school vibe that it inhabits, ‘No Hard Feelings’ doesn’t rock the boat too much. It is meant to startle and to tickle but never does it attempt to subvert the genre or do anything revolutionary or groundbreaking. Once the film gets over the hurdle of the “sex comedy” genre and move into light comedy fare, it maintains its light-heartedness and just sets out to put a smile on your face.
What I enjoyed most about the film is how it’s not a romantic comedy and never does it try to justify or normalize the sexual tension between the two characters or the strange circumstances of their meeting. Instead, it puts the attention, front and center, to the needs of some level of personal bond before any sexual act. It does take a few side jabs at “woke culture” and overly progressive thinking but, by the end of the film, it takes a side and stands squarely in that arena.
The funniest bits are already in the trailer but in a cinematic landscape that is filled with big budget blockbusters, a light hearted comedy of this tone and field is a welcome addition to the theatrical experience.
