  • Movie Review: Campy to a Fault: a review of ‘Argylle’

Matthew Vaughn, director of films like ‘Kick-Ass’ and ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ and its sequel, infuses his crazy brand of bombastic action (with heavy inflections of comedy) on ‘Argylle,’ a spy film that is filled with narrative twists and CGI-infested action scenes. ‘Argylle’ has the same tonal quality of Vaughn’s earlier work like ‘Kick-Ass’ and The Kingsman films (‘Kingsman: The Secret Service,’ ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ and ‘The King’s Man’) but the director dials up the hyper-reality by a notch and pushes the “fun factor” of the movie to an uncomfortable level.

The story of this film centers around Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), a successful spy novelist and introvert, who is suddenly the target of a real covert organization because her books coincidentally align with real events in the world of spies. Coming to her rescue is a rogue agent, Aidan (Sam Rockwell) who, like every character in the film, is way more than he seems.

Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell in Argylle Large
Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell in ARGYLLE, directed by Matthew Vaughn

The reason that I make the claim that ‘Argylle’ takes the “fun factor” of its filmmaking to an uncomfortable level is that the film, despite its crazy and unrealistic tone, lacks the same grounding elements that Vaughn’s earlier work has that allows us to feel a part of the world, or at least, interested in it. In ‘Kick-Ass’ and ‘Kingsman,’ the main characters there are presented as underdogs. In the first film, the crime-fighting Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is a comic geek/nerd and unpopular guy in school who suddenly gains the courage to don a costume and fight crime after an accident gives him the capacity to not feel pain. In the latter film, Eggsy (Taron Egerton) is a diamond in the rough, a street-smart kid who society has forgotten and who manages to rise the ranks against elitist kids for a place amongst the Kingsmen. In these films, no matter how crazy or off-the-wall Vaughn gets, we are always grounded by the origin stories of its characters.

    Henry Cavill as Argylle resized

In ‘Argylle,’ it’s hard to connect with Howard’s Elly Conway. She’s a successful writer, who lives a reclusive life in a lake house in Colorado. Her house is huge and being an introvert and a recluse is not a thing to be pitied. As her whole life is upended by either being killed or kidnapped by this spy organization, she resists it and tries to escape it and I don’t feel sad or scared for her. In the hyper-real world of ‘Argylle,’ the reaction seems unbefitting for the tone of the film. In a point of comparison, Sandra Bullock played a similar character in a movie with a similar plot line in ‘The Lost City of Z.’ When her character is kidnapped so that an evil corporate boss can use her expertise in archeology to uncover a priceless jewel, Bullock’s character is unwilling but throws herself into the absurdity of the film’s plot.

Howard’s Conway seems antithesis to the genre and is acting in a way that seems befitting a film with a more grounded approach to its reality. In this movie, the world is so out-of-the-box and divorced from a grounded reality. The bullets are endless, the physicality of all the characters are such that they can survive the shockwave of explosions and other such hijinks and distortions of the laws of physics that are typical of films in the genre of an action/comedy.

Bryce Dallas Howard in Argylle resized

In fact, even the acting of ‘Argylle’ feels disjointed and distant. Bryce Dallas Howard is an excellent actress (see her work in the ‘Black Mirror’ episode ‘Nose Dive’) and Sam Rockwell deservedly won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.’ These two actors have shown great range and understand tone. But in this movie, they seem to be just throwing themselves into the craziness of Matthew Vaughn’s world and it feels like they are having more fun than they are truly building a character.

    Argylle

Vaughn loves his CGI and huge set pieces to keep his film loud and big and excessive. There’s quite a lot of campiness to what he tries to do here in ‘Argylle’ and the essayist and cultural theorist Susan Sontag had said, in her classic essay ‘Notes on Camp’ that camp is best when it is unintentional. When one actively strives for camp, the results are never that satisfying. This feels exactly where ‘Argylle’ goes wrong. They aren’t serious enough about the craziness of this tonal exercise.

Unlike, say, ‘Kick-Ass’ or ‘Kingsman,’ where the actors were serious enough in the world that they belonged to make the characters at least feel genuine and true, Howard and Rockwell and the rest of the cast like Henry Cavill and Bryan Cranston did not really believe in the world that they created. They were actively striving for camp, winking, and nudging with the audience every step of the way and trying to look cool while having fun that it came at the expense of the film. Sure, there’s a lot that could put a smile on your face but it doesn’t help you really get into the story.

Chip the cat plays Alfie in Argylle resized

And since the film is heavily dependent on the effect all its twists have with its audience, it doesn’t hit as hard as it should when each new revelation starts popping out of the woodwork on each scene.

If you’re looking for something brainless and something light and fluffy, then ‘Argylle’ can be a fun time in the cinema. It has two wickedly large set pieces (one involving bright-colored smoke bombs and contemporary dance and another involving a lethal skating sequence) that are just a complete visual treat and so off-the-wall that you can’t help but smile. But other than that, the film doesn’t quite pack the punch it hopes to have. It’s having so much fun that they forgot to take themselves seriously enough so that we would too.

    My Rating:

    stars 2 5

  • Diving into the Depths of Fear: ‘Night Swim’ Unveils Its Haunting Waters

In the realm of horror, few elements are as universally unnerving as the vast, unpredictable expanse of water. ‘Night Swim,’ the latest supernatural thriller to hit the screens, taps into this primal fear with a narrative that’s as deep and dark as the waters that inspired it. Directed by Bryce McGuire and backed by the producing prowess of James Wan and Jason Blum, ‘Night Swim’ is not just a film; it’s a journey into the heart of aquaphobia, inspired by horror classics like ‘Poltergeist,’ ‘Christine,’ ‘Burnt Offerings,’ and the ever-potent ‘Jaws.’

The Genesis of Terror: Bryce McGuire’s Aquatic Obsession

Bryce McGuire’s connection to water runs deep. Growing up in Florida’s water-wrapped environs, McGuire’s life was a tapestry of awe-inspiring and terrifying water-related experiences. From hurricanes to shark attacks, his childhood was a testament to water’s dual nature as a giver and taker of life. This complex relationship with water not only shaped McGuire’s early years but also deeply influenced his creative path.

From Childhood Fears to Cinematic Frights

McGuire’s fascination with horror and water-themed thrillers crystallized into a vivid fear during a childhood incident involving a swimming pool and a viewing of ‘Jaws.’ This fear, though irrational to an adult mind, highlighted the water’s ability to transform into a domain of unknown horrors, even in the safe confines of a backyard pool.

‘Night Swim’: A Dive into Darkness

‘Night Swim‘ is more than just a film; it’s the culmination of McGuire’s lifelong dance with water and fear. The story revolves around Ray Waller (portrayed by Wyatt Russell), a former major league baseball player whose life takes a sinister turn when his family’s new home, complete with a luxurious swimming pool, becomes the stage for a nightmarish ordeal. The film, based on McGuire’s acclaimed 2014 short of the same name, explores themes of ambition, loss, and the unseen terrors that lurk beneath the surface of our desires.

A Pool of Talent: The Creative Minds Behind the Horror

The collaboration between Bryce McGuire, James Wan, and Jason Blum represents a meeting of minds uniquely attuned to the nuances of horror storytelling. Wan’s enthusiasm for McGuire’s vision and Blum’s appreciation for the script’s emotional depth and contemporary relevance highlight the team’s commitment to crafting a film that’s as emotionally resonant as it is terrifying.

  • Get to Know the Characters of ‘Lisa Frankenstein’: Your Pre-Valentine’s Treat in Cinemas Feb 7

Zelda Williams, the visionary behind “Lisa Frankenstein,” lights up when discussing the genius of Diablo Cody’s scriptwriting. With a nod to Cody’s uncanny ability to sculpt vivid characters, Williams delves into the heart of a tale that blends romance, comedy, and a touch of the macabre. It’s 1989, and our protagonist, Lisa Swallows, portrayed with depth by Kathryn Newton, finds herself in a tale of rebirth and romance that is anything but ordinary.

“The thing I enjoy most about her writing is the personality infused into all of it,” says Williams, who had auditioned for Juno (also written by Cody, for which she won the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award) very early in her acting career. “It’s clear immediately who these characters are, whether they’re for you or not. That sort of strong flavor choice will always be my cup of tea.”

In Lisa Frankenstein, it’s 1989 and Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), an awkward 17-year-old, is trying to adjust to a new school and a new life after her mother’s death and her father’s hasty remarriage. Despite the unwavering support offered by her plucky cheerleader step sister Taffy (Liza Soberano), Lisa only finds solace in the abandoned cemetery near her house, where she tends to the grave of a young man who died in 1837 – and whose corpse she unwittingly reanimates (Cole Sprouse). Feeling obligated to help the poor soul regain his humanity, Lisa embarks on a quest to breathe new life into her long-dead new companion. All she needs to succeed are some freshly harvested body parts and Taffy’s broken tanning bed.

    Kathryn Newton

Lisa Swallows (played by Kathryn Newton)

Lisa is a 17-year-old misfit, too self-conscious and withdrawn to fit in with either the popular crowd or even the other outsiders at school, the punks, Goths, and stoners. In the wake of her mother’s murder, she barely speaks. “Lisa Swallows is this girl who isn’t heard, who doesn’t speak up,” Newton says. “She doesn’t think she matters very much. She’s been through a lot of trauma, and she is so hurt and shy she would rather not bring any attention to herself.”

Cole Sprouse as the Creature Kathryn Newton as Lisa Swallows

    The Creature (Cole Sprouse)

The Creature is the corpse that Lisa unintentionally brings back to life. A professional pianist who took his own life after being rejected by a woman he adored, the Creature was a hopeless romantic, a gentleman well versed in 19th century manners and etiquette, qualities he retains in death, or rather, undeath. He feels immense gratitude toward Lisa that soon blossoms into genuine adoration. “Over time, I think the Creature realizes he’s deeply in love with Lisa,” Sprouse says. “He wants to be her protector, trying to make her feel heard and understood.”

    Liza Soberano Lisa Frankenstein 2

    Taffy (Liza Soberano)

Taffy is the kind, if somewhat clueless, stepsister of Lisa. Empathetic, earnest and wildly popular, naturally perfect Taffy is the antithesis of the stereotypical “mean girl” – she welcomes Lisa into her family with open arms and does everything she can to help her fit in. “Taffy is my favorite character,” says Cody.

    Carla Gugino

    Janet (Carla Gugino)

Janet is Taffy’s narcissistic mom who dotes on her own daughter, but is endlessly disapproving of Lisa. “Janet lives in Janet’s world for sure – she is definitely the hero of her own story,” says Gugino. “Janet has created and curated a perfect world and a perfect family in her mind, and she cannot imagine how Lisa would not want to be a part of it.”

    Dale (Joe Chrest)

Lisa’s own father, Dale, does little to intervene on his child’s behalf, leaving Janet to exert her domineering influence at every turn. “Dale is such a checked-out dad,” producer Mason Novick says. “Diablo writes a lot of dad characters who are just oblivious to what’s going on. I don’t want to say men in Diablo’s scripts are knuckleheads, but the focus of the conversations are on women. The father is around, and he’s really funny, but he’s not the one moving the story forward. He is very much the passive husband.”

    Michael Trent (Henry Eikenberry)

Michael is Lisa’s crush whom she describes as an “intellectual punk dreamboat.” Although he initially seems to display an odd kind of fascination with Lisa, he doesn’t necessarily harbor romantic feelings toward her. “He’s so clueless,” says Eikenberry of his character.

Don’t miss out on this heartwarming, funny, and slightly gory undead romance. Follow Universal Pictures Ph on Facebook and @universalpicturesph on Instagram for the latest updates.
