  • Theater Review — Inside the Bi-Polar Mind: A Review of The Sandbox Collective’s ‘Next to Normal’

Theater Review — Inside the Bi-Polar Mind: A Review of The Sandbox Collective’s ‘Next to Normal’

I had no prior knowledge about the Tony award winning musical ‘Next to Normal’ before I came to watch The Sandbox Collective’s open rehearsal first and then the show at Circuit during preview night. As someone who grew up with traditional musical tastes from Rogers and Hammersteins to Sondheim, Kander & Ebb to Ahrens and Flaherty, I’ve always had a resistance to contemporary musicals (though that’s changing now). But to hear a musical that’s rooted in rock music and tackling such a heavy topic like mental illness and grief the way that ‘Next to Normal’ does, and with such fervor, it’s quite a shock to the system.

Next to Normal The Sandbox Collective

Written by Brian Yorkey (book and lyrics) and Tom Kitt (music), the play is about a family that’s falling apart. Diana, the mom, is suffering from several mental conditions brought forth by an extreme sense of grief. Trying desperately to hold it together is Diana’s husband, Dan, while their kids, Gabe and Natalie are growing up and dealing with their mother’s condition in unique and different ways. While Natalie meets the stoner Henry, who has taken an interest in her, she’s afraid to commit because of the trouble at home while Diana decides to get off her meds which leads to disastrous results. When Diana switches to a different doctor, Doctor Madden, she goes into a journey that threatens to shake the very fabric of this family and forces them to face the demons they’ve been avoiding for years.

Under the direction of Toff De Venecia, the play sort of exists in some liminal space that is both the family’s home and also Diana’s mind and mental state. The stage is practically bare except for several chairs and a piano bench and one box that can be a sofa or a table that is constantly being arranged and re-arranged depending on the delicate balance of the relationships in the home. This is De Venecia’s best directorial effort, in my opinion, where the busy-ness of the stage movements find themselves in synch with Diana’s decline in her mental health. Constantly, characters are fixing the chairs and putting them down and standing them when making large declarations that the whole space is in a constant state of flux. The few moments when Diana has any semblance of lucidity and peace, is when the play gets to calm down and go quiet. The play’s direction and the choreography of Stephen Vinas and production design of Mark Dalacat, allows us to see this narrative through Diana’s point-of-view.

Next to Normal Prev Shiela OJ 19

The cast does everything else. The cast that I got to see are all exceptional singers, acting through the performances, and really hitting the emotional notes in each of the songs. Shiela Valderrama shines as Diana (alternate Nikki Valdez), who is constantly just trying to keep it together. Her clarity as she is emoting through each of her songs is incredible; she’s breaking down, but each word is getting across to the audience even as her world is crumbling around her. OJ Mariano plays Dan (Floyd Tena alternates) with so much heart; a man that is trying his best to keep that family from breaking, but you can tell he is at his wit’s end. Vino Mabalot plays Gabe (alternate Benedix Ramos), who has some of those most emotional songs (second to Diana) and he can sing the hell out of these moments. But the ones that really stole the show in the performance I saw was Shiela Belarmino as Natalie (alternate Jam Binay) and Omar Uddin as Henry (alternate Davy Narciso). Belarmino and Uddin manages to create a space for their character’s romantic subplot to wonderfully contrast the heavy parts of Diana’s struggle. The counterpoint breathes some fresh air into the piece and Belarmino and Uddin’s comedic timing, charisma, and joyous approach to their scenes creates a wonderful layer that keeps the show from tilting completely into dread and doom. Belarmino manages to amplify Natalie’s narrative without taking away from Diana’s struggle, which is at the heart of the play. It would be very easy to direct everything towards Diana and have everyone’s individual arc be in service of Diana’s, but Belarmino suffuses Natalie with so much spirit that their story feels intertwined. Diana’s journey informs Natalie’s.

The Sandbox Collective's Next to Normal

My only gripe is that the venue does not lend well to musicals and large productions. The sound system was off, with the microphones not giving the clarity that the show needed. The full band set-up, directed by Ejay Yatco, could sometimes drown the singers (except Valderrama) and I hope that they can fix the audio problems for future shows.

This is not an easy play to digest. While it can be funny and charming, it is also alarming and scary and honest and authentic. The way it shows the full extent of how difficult bi-polar disorder can be, how grief can be so destructive when left unchecked, and how the people who are caught in the crossfire can feel so defenseless. All of this is in full display in this musical and De Venecia’s direction brings it all out for us to come to grips with and even enjoy.

    My Rating:

    stars 4 0

Next to Normal will run until February 23, 2025 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater. Get your tickets here.

  • 3 Ways You Can Kickstart a Healthier Lifestyle and Help the Planet Today

3 Ways You Can Kickstart a Healthier Lifestyle and Help the Planet Today

The new year is the perfect time to focus on health and wellness. For many, setting fitness goals and building better habits mark the first step toward a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Whether it’s exercising daily, meal prepping, or practicing healthy hydration everyday – these small, consistent habits can lay the foundation for long-term success.

The key is consistency—and it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Here are some steps you can take to invest in a healthier life this year.

    1. Develop just one healthy habit – but do it every day

Healthy habits don’t have to be complicated. Start with an activity you genuinely enjoy and aim to do it every day for two months. Once it becomes a habit, you’ll no longer rely on willpower to stay on track—it will be automatic.

A great example of a simple healthy habit? Running.

Running has surged in popularity, and it’s easy to see why: running boosts the mood, reduces anxiety, and delivers tons of physical benefits. And it’s not complicated—just grab your sneakers and hit the road!

One way you can really build your fitness habit is to join others in their journey. Run clubs have become a go-to for those looking to stay active and make connections. Their workouts are shared experiences, which can help you stay motivated.

    2. Move your body everyday

Incorporating movement through running and joining runs as part of your routine is one of the best ways to build a healthy lifestyle. This year, you can make your steps count even more by joining the GCash Eco Run.

The GCash Eco Run gives everyone the chance to combine fitness with helping the planet. In partnership with Silliman University, a grey mangrove tree will be planted in Negros Occidental for every person that signs up to the GCash Eco Run. To double the impact of this initiative –  GCash will plant an additional tree, for every tree planted!

Mangroves play a vital role in combating climate change, protecting local coastlines from erosion, and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities by serving as fish nurseries. This initiative not only strengthens environmental resilience but also ensures sustainable livelihoods, fostering long-term benefits for both nature and people.

The GCash Eco Run offers distances for everyone – from beginners to more seasoned runners. The 3K and 5K races are open to participants 13 and older and children 12 and under may join if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those who want to stretch their capabilities can join the 10K races, which is open to participants 16 and older.

The GCash Eco Run is happening on March 23, 2025 along Ayala Avenue in Makati. Until February 28, you can register and enjoy  ₱150 OFF with promo code GCASHRUNTAYO. Every step supports mangrove restoration, helping protect our shores and marine life, so take advantage of this special offer while it lasts!

    3. Embrace the Journey

Fitness is a journey, not a sprint. Progress takes time, so celebrate every small victory and don’t let setbacks discourage you. With consistency, movement becomes second nature—so embrace the process and have fun along the way.

Make 2025 the year you prioritize your health and your role in helping the planet. Join the GCash Eco Run to turn your fitness goals into meaningful action this March and create a healthier, more sustainable future—one step at a time.

Registration to the GCash Eco Run is now open until March 22, 2025. Sign up via the GCash app and receive your GForest Tree Certificate on event day. For more details, visit this link.

  • Nyoy and Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante Set to Delight as The Baker and The Baker’s Wife in The Philippine Staging Of ‘Into The Woods’

Nyoy and Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante Set to Delight as The Baker and The Baker’s Wife in The Philippine Staging Of ‘Into The Woods’

Freshly baked casting news: Theatre Group Asia (TGA) reveals seasoned theater performers and real-life couple Nyoy and Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante as The Baker and The Baker’s Wife in its production of Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods this coming August to be held at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater (S-PAT).

Like a sprinkle of sugar, the veteran singer-songwriter and stage actor sweetly remarks, “I get to play with my wife in this musical! I’m so thrilled to be working with her again!” The couple famously met when they starred together in the musical Rock of Ages back in 2012 staged by Atlantis Production and directed by Chari Arespacochaga, the same director as this production of Into The Woods. The duo last worked together in the local run of Kinky Boots where Nyoy played Lola while Mikkie did his makeup. The Philippine run of the Tony Award-winning musical was directed by the late theater impresario and TGA founding collaborator Bobby Garcia.

    2 MIKKIE BRADSHAW VOLANTE

Mikkie reminisces, “I’m looking forward to paying tribute to my mentor and dear friend Direk Bobby Garcia by tapping into everything he taught me. The Baker’s Wife has been a dream role of mine, and I can’t wait to breathe life into a character I’ve fantasized about playing for over a decade now.” Mikkie’s impressive 14-year theater career began when she played Liesel in The Sound of Music. Her credit highlights include roles in Carousel, Aladdin, The Addams Family, Ghost the Musical, The Bridges of Madison County, Saturday Night Fever the Musical, Beautiful the Carole King Musical, and Carrie the Musical to name a few.

    1 NYOY VOLANTE

On his portrayal of The Baker, Nyoy shares, “I’m excited about developing the character’s road to discovery – his resilience and bravery while overcoming insecurities and struggles. And just like all of Sondheim’s creations, the music of Into The Woods is fabulous and beautiful.” The accomplished recording artist and Your Face Sounds Familiar and Tawag ng Tanghalan mentor’s notable performances include roles in Sweeney Todd, Little Shop of Horrors, Jersey Boys, Singing in the Rain, Shrek the Musical, Spelling Bee, and In the Heights among others.

Their shared love for fairy tales and fantasy fuels their enthusiasm. They agree, “Combining all our favorite fairytales, married with our love for Sondheim’s music, make Into The Woods such an amazing story.”

Nyoy and Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante join previously announced cast members Lea Salonga as The Witch, Arielle Jacobs as Cinderella, Joaquin Pedro Valdes as Prince Charming and The Wolf, and Eugene Domingo as Jack’s Mother.

Into The Woods* is based on James Lapine’s book, who also directed the original Broadway run. The plot intertwines several fairy tale characters and dramatically portrays the impact of human choices and actions.

Behind this production of Into The Woods is Tony Award-winning visionary Clint Ramos, who serves as overall artistic and creative director alongside co-producers John and Joanna Echauz, and S-PAT Executive Director Chris Mohnani.

Chien shares, “I’m very excited to play such an innocent character. In the past, I’ve played characters who know what’s going on, but Jack is such a pure character. I think it will be so much fun to play. And I love everything about this show! The music, lyrics, the way things reference each other, how crazy and complicated it may be. Overall, it’s just beautiful! It’s beautiful music with smart, heartfelt,

Chien made his professional musical theater debut as Alice in Atlantis Productions’ Matilda, and has been bitten by the theater acting bug ever since. In 2023, Chien participated in the English Speaking Union’s National Shakespeare Competition and garnered third place. No stranger to performing under the spotlight, Chien has made several concert appearances since he was young, alongside his mother, the legendary Lea Salonga.

On collaborating with her only child, the Tony and Olivier-winning Salonga enthuses, “I’m most looking forward to working with Nic! We’ve done numerous concerts over the years, but this will be our first musical together!”

Into The Woods* is based on James Lapine’s book, who also directed the original Broadway run. The plot intertwines several fairy tale characters and dramatically portrays the impact of human choices and actions.
