Movie Review — Life and Death in Full Bloom: A Review of ‘The Room Next Door’

A poignant meditation on death and life, ‘The Room Next Door’ is a daunting film that tackles the idea of euthanasia head-on. It is not a bombastic film filled with histrionics and unnecessary drama (though there are some scenes that lean into the melodrama but more on that later), the Pedro Almadovar directed and written movie, based on a novel by Sigrid Nunez called ‘What Are You Going Through’, is just a series of moments, of conversations between its two protagonists. Their lives are unfurled until a request, almost halfway through the film, turns everything into an ongoing negotiation.

Ingrid (Julianne Moore) is a successful author, who has written about her fear of death in her books. During a book signing event, she bumps into an old friend who tells her that another friend of theirs, Martha (Tilda Swinton) is struggling with stage 3 cervical cancer. Not having seen each other in a long time, Ingrid takes time out to visit Martha and the two reconnect and Ingrid becomes her closer friend in these trying times. She’s there as Martha experiences her worst and her best days during treatment and it’s a bond that allows Martha to make a request: she wants Ingrid to be in the room next door when she decides to kill herself with a suicide pill (hence the title).

The first half of the film is just the two of them talking, reconnecting, with Martha sharing her strongest memories of her past and shares why she is estranged from her daughter. The film shifts to flashbacks of these moments and, strangely enough, guided by the intricate music composed by Alberto Iglesias, the film takes on many genres. When Martha shares her story of how she met her daughter’s father, Fred, the film shifts into a period teen romance but when she continues to tell us how he returned from the Vietnam war, it becomes a drama about PTSD and letting go. The film shifts genres occasionally, made seamless by a shift in the pervasive musical score that grounds the film.

Movie Review by Wanggo Gallaga The Room Next Door

It shifts and transforms because Ingrid is torn by Martha’s request. She loves her friend, but she finds death “so unnatural.” The movie is anchored by Swinton and Moore’s incredible performances. Moore is constantly at the brink, trying to understand but also trying to be supportive and this struggle is so clear in her looks, gesture, posture, delivery of lines. Swinton, on the other hand, is a powerhouse, considering her character is frail and at the brink of death. The make-up and lighting make her look gaunt and her physicality is riddled with pain yet there is a vibrant spirit behind her who is trying to reclaim any sense of dignity she can muster before cancer takes it all away.

And through their navigation of this choice, Almadovar creates a wonderful little film about the wonders of life and the inevitability of death.

It’s a quiet film that is not afraid to get silly (one scene details what happens to Fred that feels like a scene out of a Isabel Allende novel, complete with the melodrama aesthetic) even in the face of death. While the narrative structure is solid and tight, the dialogue can feel stunted and read like its scripted and unnatural. I’m not sure if Almadovar is a fluent speaker of English or if he had a translator involved but even with Moore and Swinton at the helm, the dialogue can sometimes fall under the level of being trite or contrived. Yes, both characters are very literate (Martha is a war correspondent and is very well-read, loves Faulkner and Fitzgerald) but there are instances when the dialogue can get too pretty that it feels off.

But the visuals are exquisite. Even if it’s just two women talking, at times, Almadovar brings his camera really close to their faces, their inner worlds just bubbling under their faces. He then brings the camera back out to capture the two in a lush backdrop of nature when Martha and Ingrid take a vacation in a summer home 2 hours from the city. Life in full bloom while Martha is at her last steps and Ingrid is hoping for a change of heart.

‘The Room Next Door’ does not have the urgency or the passion of Almadovar’s older works which I love – ‘Talk to Her’ and ‘All About My Mother’ – but it has a tender heart that truly manages to capture in no uncertain terms the breadth of a human life. It’s a relatively quiet film that will charm you if you let it.

Areté, In Collaboration with Tanghalang Ateneo, Presents ‘Sintang Dalisay’

Areté, Ateneo de Manila University’s creativity and innovation hub, together with Tanghalang Ateneo, the university’s longest-running theater company, proudly restages Sintang Dalisay. This Filipino adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, which fuses the translation of National Artist Rolando S. Tinio and a 1904 poem by G.D. Roke, and directed by the late Ricardo G. Abad with Guelan Varela-Luarca, celebrates the enduring legacy of Dr. Abad in Philippine theater.

    Sintang Dalisay

Set in an imagined Muslim community in the Southern Philippines, Sintang Dalisay reimagines the timeless story of star-crossed lovers. Rashiddin and Jamila must navigate their secret love amidst the longstanding feud between their families, the Mustaphas and Kalimuddins. This adaptation combines Shakespeare’s tragedy with the Filipino spirit of festive love and enduring hope, brought to life through the Igal dance of the Sama-Bajau people and neo-ethnic and gamelan music.

This production is part of Tanghalang Ateneo’s “ELOQUENTIA, SAPIENTIA, HUMANITAS: The Ricky Season,” a tribute to the late theater veteran. Dr. Abad rst directed Sintang Dalisay in 2011. The following year, it earned ALIW Awards for Best Non-Musical Production and Best Direction For Non-Musical Production. In 2016, it won the Silver Medal for Production at the 3rd International Experimental Theater Festival in Vietnam. Its 2024 revival earned four nominations at the BroadwayWorld Philippines Awards, including Best Play, Best Ensemble, and Best Choreography for Matthew Santamaria. The production’s music direction, helmed by Edru Abraham, Jayson “Dyandi” Gildore, and Aurea Dagnalan, also received acclaim. The production also boasts of the fantastic Southeast Asian-inspired design of National Artist Salvador Bernal.

This 2025 restaging is more than a performance; it is a tribute to Dr. Abad’s vision and his transformative contributions to Philippine theater, which continue to inspire generations.

DJI Delivers Next-Level Intelligent Smartphone Photography with Osmo Mobile 7 Series

DJI, the global leader in civilian drones and creative camera technology, today launches the Osmo Mobile 7 Series. This new generation of phone gimbal takes three-axis stabilization and intelligent tracking to new heights. Both the Osmo Mobile 7P and Osmo Mobile 7 feature DJI’s seventh-generation stabilization, ActiveTrack 7.0 technology1, and a range of intelligent features for capturing cinematic-quality footage on a smartphone.

    1Mobile 7 Series Product KV 8k

“From award-winning filmmakers to short-form content creators, DJI continues to expand our ecosystem of creative camera technologies and push the industry forward,” said Ferdinand Wolf, Product Experience Director at DJI. “With the Osmo Mobile 7 Series’ latest advances in intelligent tracking and camera stabilization, capturing beautiful, professional content with a smartphone has never been easier.”

The Osmo Mobile 7P features a more powerful three-axis smartphone stabilizer that maintains the lightweight, portable, and robust tracking capabilities of the Osmo Mobile 6. With the new Multifunctional Module1, creators can easily track subjects and it includes integrated light control with multiple color temperature and brightness levels. When the Multifunctional Module functions as a microphone receiver, its USB-C port can be connected to your phone to deliver high-quality audio transmission while also providing extra power. It is also easy to set up thanks to the quick one-step unfolding, integrated extension rod, and built-in tripod.

The Osmo Mobile 7 is the lightest gimbal in its class, weighing about 10 ounces (approximately 300 g). Like the Osmo Mobile 7P, it features a compact design and is easy to use, but at a more entry-level price. It also allows for quick unfolding, a built-in tripod, one-step storage, and can support the Multifunctional Module (sold separately).

    Power of the Multifunctional Module

The Multifunctional Module allows creators to easily track subjects using their smartphone’s native camera, live streaming apps, and other camera apps. It can accurately maintain focus in a crowd or reacquire a subject if they re-enter the frame after leaving briefly. The module can be easily attached to the gimbal with a simple magnetic clip and controlled using hand gestures1 to take photos, start or stop recording, activate tracking, or adjust a composition.

    ●          Showing your palm to the module starts or stops intelligent tracking.

    ●          Making a “V” gesture takes a photo. It can also start or stop video recording.

    ●          Making a “Double L” gesture with two hands adjusts a subject’s framing.

    ActiveTrack 7.0: Smarter Than Ever

When paired with the DJI Mimo app1, the Osmo Mobile 7 Series can use ActiveTrack 7.0. As DJI’s most advanced tracking technology, ActiveTrack 7.0 enables the gimbal to adjust to track subjects and follow their movements automatically, even in a crowded or active environment. Smart Capture allows the gimbal to detect multiple subjects, and users can direct the gimbal to lock onto one subject or switch to a different subject with a simple tap. Smooth tracking enables the gimbal to pinpoint the shooter’s preferred focus accurately and maintains continuous tracking even if the subject is obscured or moving rapidly.

    Other Standout Features

    ●          Side Wheel for More Cinematic Control: Creators can adjust the focal length for a more flexible composition and a smoother zoom or switch to a manual focus. Additionally, a long press enables control over the fill light, making it easy to adjust brightness and color temperature, thus simplifying your shooting experience.

    ●          Compatible with Apple Watch1: Using the DJI Mimo app, creators can use their Apple Watch as a smart remote for the gimbal, remotely controlling their shoot and camera feed.

    ●          Up to 10 hours of operational time1.

  • Theater Review — An Exquisite Total Theatrical Experience, ‘Sintang Dalisay’ Is Must-See Theater

Theater Review — An Exquisite Total Theatrical Experience, ‘Sintang Dalisay’ Is Must-See Theater

‘Sintang Dalisay’ is a marvelous work of sheer genius – from the immersive direction of the late Ricardo Abad and Guelan Varela-Luarca, to the adaptation and translation of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by National Artist Rolando Tinio, the exquisite choreography of Matthew Santamaria (and fight choreography by Brian Sy), and the stirring musical direction of Jayson “Dyandi” Gildore – as it reimagines the tragic story of the star-crossed lovers in an imagined Muslim community in the Southern Philippines. Romeo and Juliet are transformed into Rashiddin and Jamila and the entire experience is told through dance and song and the poetry of Shakespeare’s words adapted into the most lyrical of Filipino verses. It’s a total theatrical spectacle the trims down the original play into a tight 2 hours filled with joy and sadness, love and loss.

    Sintang Dalisay Main Poster

Taking all the narrative beats from the original, Rashiddin and Jamila are from two rival families, Mustapha and Kalimuddin, who are constantly feuding in the town. During a forced truce, Rashiddin sneaks into a feast held by the Kalimuddin family for Jamila and in brief instant, they fall in love. They secretly marry despite Jamila is betrothed to another. They elope with the help of the Imam, the spiritual leader, who hopes that their union may broker peace but when a duel goes awry and Jamila’s cousin, Taupan, accidentally kills Badawi, Rashiddin’s friend; Rashiddin takes vengeance and slays Taupan in retaliation. With the Kalamuddin putting the blame on Rashiddin, the two lovers hatches a plan to leave home and start anew but it does not go their way.

Rolando Tinio’s adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (and a 1904 poem by G. D. Roke), which sets it comfortably in a Muslim community plays into our colonial ideas of a war-torn and hostile Muslim land. The constant bickering of the Kalimuddin and the Mustapha plays into that hegemonic ideology. But while that’s at work, Tinio gives us a chance to also witness the beauty of that world – the songs and the music and the dancing – that amplifies the rich and deep culture of the Muslim people. This adaptation creates a space to humanize them and turn them familiar as many people who are not given a chance to engage with this community may have a distant understanding of their world. ‘Sintang Dalisay’ makes it very easy to connect with them.

    Photos by Jules Ballaran

It’s Dr. Abad’s and Guelan Varela-Luarca’s stage direction that keeps the energy from dipping, allowing us to feel the imminent danger of that rivalry that always seems ready to burst. At the same time, there are moments of levity but, most importantly, there are moments of pure, innocent beauty in the form of the growing love between Rashiddin and Jamila.

    Sintang Dalisay jballaran 02081 1
    Photos by Jules Ballaran

It’s the intricate choreography that adds that layer that makes ‘Sintang Dalisay’ such a delicious show. The dancing enlivens the scenes, but it also amplifies the emotions of each character. So, while Taupan and Badawi speak loud and tough, Rashiddin is somewhat soft and fluid, not a fighter at all but one that feels more romantic, just based on the movements alone. So, when Jamila and Rashiddin first meet each other at the feast, in the midst of a great dance performance, everything stops the moment their eyes meet. The choreography adjusts to them. While no words were uttered, we believe that it’s love at first sight. It’s the power and magic of theater and I haven’t seen it so elegantly done and in such a surprising way.

The music is also extremely note-worthy. This cast are incredible singers and the live band playing kumintangs, flutes, and other indigenous instruments create a sonic landscape that really enhances every scene and transports the audience to that place and time.

    Sintang Dalisay jballaran 02138
    Photos by Jules Ballaran

Unfortunately, Karl Borromeo, who plays Rashiddin, is drowned out by the largeness of the play’s scope and design. Borromeo tends to shout instead of projects, so it removes the nuances of Rashiddin’s scenes. His quiet scenes, his comedic scenes, and his fight scenes have all that same tonal quality. Borromeo is an incredible dancer, and he shines completely when performing with Maliana Beran, who plays Jamila. Their duets are impeccable. But in his scenes with Jerome Dawis as Taupan and Roldine Ebrada as Badawi, Borromeo gets lost under all that excellence. Dawis and Ebrada (as well as James Reyes as the Imam) are just fantastic. They fill the stage with their presence.

    Sintang Dalisay jballaran 02266
    Photos by Jules Ballaran

But the real star of the show is Maliana Beran. As Jamila she is charming and innocent and commanding. You can see why Rashiddin falls in love with her at a glance and her movements are so precise that it’s as nuanced as her performance. She’s radiant and is capable of creating so many layers for Jamila to exist in this play.

    Sintang Dalisay jballaran 02342

With the gorgeous designs of the late National Artist Salvador Bernal and Tata Tuviera, the richness of the Filipino Muslim culture, the intricacies of Tinio’s translations, and the creativity of Abad and Varela-Luarca, ‘Sintang Dalisay’ is an unforgettable theatrical experience that you must see, at least once.

New Limited Series FX’s ‘Dying for Sex’ Premieres Exclusively on Disney+ This April 4

Disney+ recently announced that FX’s “Dying for Sex, ” a new limited series starring Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate and an extraordinary cast, will premiere on April 4 exclusively on Disney+. All eight episodes will be available at premiere.

    Dying for Sex

FX’s “Dying for Sex” is inspired by the story of Molly Kochan, originally shared on a Wondery podcast created with her best friend, Nikki Boyer. After Molly (Michelle Williams) receives a diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, she decides to leave her husband, Steve (Jay Duplass), and begins to explore the full breadth and complexity of her sexual desires for the first time in her life.

Gird yourself, Molly has a lot to accomplish in the little time she has left. There’s no time for pearl clutching or passing judgement, Molly has no interest in what you think about her proverbial bucket list (btw, this phrase will always provoke an eye roll). She gains the courage to embark on this adventure from her ride or die Nikki (Jenny Slate), a woman whose love and devotion will compel you to pick up the phone and call that friend already! Also joining the cast are Rob Delaney, Kelvin Yu, David Rasche, Esco Jouléy and Sissy Spacek.

Rosales Returns to the Big Screen

After a years-long hiatus, Rosales is making a grand comeback to Philippine cinema. His last big-screen appearance was in the 2018 romantic drama The Girl in the Orange Dress. Most recently, he captivated television audiences in the hit ABS-CBN drama Lavender Fields.

Speaking about his new role, Rosales shared his excitement:

“I feel so honored to be with this team. Coming to a script like this which is so potent and so entertaining, I feel so lucky and happy.” Rosales said. “Here, you will see Quezon as a person. He’s not written as a hero. He is cunning, he is charming, he is intelligent. Quezon is such an interesting character to play; there are so many things I can put into the role to build Quezon as a character. That adds to the pressure, but at the same time I am very excited.”

    TBA Studios on Casting Rosales

TBA Studios President and COO Daphne Chiu praised the casting choice, saying:

  • Critics Hail “Mickey 17” as a Bold, Hilarious, and Timely Sci-Fi Satire

Critics Hail “Mickey 17” as a Bold, Hilarious, and Timely Sci-Fi Satire

The wait is over! Bong Joon Ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi film Mickey 17 has finally premiered, and early reactions are overwhelmingly positive. Marking the Oscar-winning director’s return since Parasite, the film made its grand debut in London before screening at the prestigious 75th Berlin International Film Festival. Critics and audiences alike are hailing it as a bold, hilarious, and socially relevant masterpiece.

Critics Rave: A Sci-Fi Satire Worth the Hype

Film buffs have been eager to see how Bong Joon Ho would adapt Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7—and the first reviews suggest he’s delivered another genre-defying hit.

David Ehrlich (Indiewire): “Bong Joon Ho is still very good at making movies.”

Deadline Hollywood: “Based on the book by Edward Ashton, director Bong has adapted [the book] with a distinctive cinematic style as a dizzyingly funny but pertinent satire.”

Total Film: “zany… a thrilling, unexpected sci-fi drama” and in their review said that the film is “funny and charming from the get-go, building out a fascinating sci-fi world from its central conceit that ends up speaking to powerful and timely concerns through humor, satire, and exhilarating genre elements. Bong Joon Ho’s best English movie to date and arguably Robert Pattinson’s best movie ever.”

SlashFilm: “With a sublime cast, ‘Mickey 17’ is a deeply heartfelt and uncomfortably funny musing on capitalism, colonization, and corruption. It’s a perfect film for our time, and Bong Joon-ho’s best English-language film yet.”

Adam McKay (Director, Don’t Look Up): “Mickey 17,” saying, “It’s hilarious, wild, sometimes genuinely heartbreaking and a perfect allegory for the hellscape stage of capitalism we’re in right now.”

    A Story Unlike Any Other

Mickey 17 follows Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), an expendable worker on a space colony who is repeatedly resurrected each time he dies on the job. But when Mickey refuses to accept his fate, things take a thrilling turn. With Bong Joon Ho’s signature mix of dark humor, gripping drama, and biting social commentary, the film is set to be one of 2025’s must-watch blockbusters.
