  • James McAvoy Delivers a Chilling Performance in Blumhouse’s New Thriller “Speak No Evil”

James McAvoy Delivers a Chilling Performance in Blumhouse’s New Thriller “Speak No Evil”

In Speak No Evil, a British family welcomes an American family to their serene farmhouse for what promises to be a perfect weekend. However, the dream quickly unravels into a horrifying nightmare. At the heart of this intense psychological thriller is BAFTA award-winning actor James McAvoy, known for his portrayal of the young Charles Xavier in the X-Men universe. McAvoy takes on the complex role of Paddy, the charismatic yet chilling host whose dark side lurks just beneath the surface.

McAvoy’s Enthusiasm for a Realistic Horror

When director James Watkins pitched the role to McAvoy, the actor was instantly captivated. “Blumhouse has done so many kinds of movies, but they’re mostly known for the horror genre, and they’re exceptionally good at it,” says McAvoy. “But reading the script, what kept me going after page three was the fact that these characters felt like real people and that it was based on things that we can recognize in the real world.”

    2575 FP 00224

Watkins’ Vision and McAvoy’s Masterful Performance

Director James Watkins had only one actor in mind for Paddy—James McAvoy. “Paddy must charm us even while being on the edge of horrifying us, and James knows how to walk that line,” Watkins says. “I watched him in the film Filth and was mesmerized: his character is horrible, but James somehow takes us with him. A lesser actor would have lost us. As well as a movie star, James is a brilliant stage actor. Exploring Paddy, he not only mines his own experience but taps into a deep well of classical resources: Iago, Richard III, Mephistopheles.”

Watkins highlights McAvoy’s deep understanding of classical characters like Iago and Richard III, which he brought to the role of Paddy. “I don’t think anyone else in the world could have played Paddy as well as James. His understanding of psychological and emotional space—of mapping tiny shifts on an emotional gradient—is second to none. He was the first and only actor I approached.”

    SPN 2

Exploring the Dark Side of Masculinity

McAvoy was particularly intrigued by Paddy’s character, who embodies a traditional, almost mythic masculinity. “James Watkins and I really leaned into that aspect of him as we fleshed out who Paddy is and what he means to the story and to the culture, giving him some mythic heft with timely resonance. Here’s this man’s man, beholden to some ancient idea of masculinity, living in the countryside, living off the land, or so you think. It all seems so wholesome and earthy. And yet this is ancient England that we’re talking about, and there’s darkness in the land; there’s a history of violence and bloodshed and horrible things in that dirt, and so there’s evil in that earthy masculinity that he’s romanticizing and selling.”

McAvoy’s portrayal of Paddy is not just about his magnetic personality; it’s about the hidden darkness within. “Paddy is incredibly entertaining and he’s always performing,” McAvoy says. “But you have to be careful playing a character like that, because then it can become a showy turn, and while that could be very effective for an audience, it doesn’t necessarily have a lot of truth to it. We were always working to ground the character in real history, motivation and desire, and to earn the revelations of his true nature. As much as Paddy is this likably mercurial, counter-cultural figure, there’s real darkness in him, and it’s always there for the audience to see.”

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Cinemalaya XX: the mesmerizing ‘An Errand’ is a demanding arthouse cinema piece

MOVIE REVIEW: Cinemalaya XX: the mesmerizing ‘An Errand’ is a demanding arthouse cinema piece

I love and hate arthouse movies. I love them because, at their best, they really make you think, and they stay with you for a very long time; your mind comes back to them every now and then as you see vestiges of their truth in your own life every now and then. I remember films like ‘Under the Skin’ by Jonathan Glazer, ‘Upstream Color’ by Shane Caruth, Whammy Alcazaren’s ‘Islands,’ and Timmy Harn’s ‘Dog Days.’ I hate arthouse films because they really try my patience; by deviating heavily from the principles of traditional narratives, the stories of these movies meander aimlessly, implying maybe a thread of a larger tapestry but not really getting there until the end, if at all.

And Dominic Bekaert’s ‘An Errand’ is just such a film. At 83 minutes, the film is shorter than most full-length features these days, but the movie’s narrative sprawls out at a slow pace, much like the protagonist’s eponymous errand to fetch an expensive branded shirt and a can of pills from Manila to bring to his shady boss in Baguio. Moroy (Sid Lucero) is the driver to Art Acuna’s lawyer, an unnamed, hot-tempered man who is having an affair with a younger woman (Elora Espano). ‘An Errand’ zooms in on the tiny world of Moroy as he must deal being in an enclosed space (the lawyer’s car) with his boss and his mistress. When he’s with them, he hears their interactions, must live with it in his head, or if the lawyer is working, he picks up whatever bits and traces of it he (and us, as the audience) can piece together.

In-between, Moroy is hanging out at the driver’s waiting lounge, where he listens to the stories of other drivers and bodyguards, including the urban legend of Rex (Eric Kelly), a driver who makes a harsh realisation of his own boss, as told by Ben (Nanding Josef), a senior driver of an old woman, who seems to gamble a lot and has a lot of court cases.

    An Errand 9B663B2D 9136 40A1 9829 97BE77C69E09

All of these characters orbit around each other and create a dazzling tale of a world that may or may not be dark and sinister. Bekaert keeps his point-of-view small, only from within the purview of Moroy and Moroy hardly crosses the line. To amplify this, Bekaert keeps his framing tight and cluttered. He either composes each shot with Moroy and the other characters trapped within a confined space (a car, the driver’s waiting lounge) and when he does expand the view, he leaves very little space for the characters to move around (like in one scene when Moroy delivers a bag to the lawyer, he has to walk around a swimming pool that occupies 80% of the frame). This excellent use of mis-en-scene, coupled with Michael Benedicto’s musical score underlines the film’s eerie meditation of the lives of people on the periphery of power.

    An Errand 7F3040C2 2DE5 4133 8AA5 0B2BFDC6EA4B
Images from Cinemalaya – An Errand

There are set ups here for classic tropes – does the driver make a move for the mistress, does the driver turn to the police with what little he knows, is the driver an undercover cop or a man with an axe to grind – but the film never turns there. It plays with our understanding of this dramatic situation, of these characters, of our imagined understanding of this milieu and shakes us up.

Because as much as we’d like to put meaning behind the mistress’ gift of a branded Mona Lisa shirt to her lawyer boyfriend, as much as we want to believe that Moroy’s errand back to Manila – the very cause of this seemingly abrupt existential crisis – nothing really does, as arthouse films often do.

    An Errand 2E0BDD7C 515B 47EE B1FD 07390D75EC18

There’s no catharsis here; no sudden revelations; no grand epiphany about the nature of this sick and twisted world. The audience’s desire for something to happen might be the point to the exercise. And the moment the legend somehow merges with the mundane world of Moroy, it does not give us the ending we are craving for, but it allows our imaginations to spark and dream for change.

And for an arthouse film, this is just what it is supposed to do. It’s exactly the kind of film I was hoping to see in Cinemalaya.

    My Rating:

    stars 4 0

  • Justin Baldoni and Brandon Sklenar Bring Opposites Ryle and Atlas to Life in “It Ends With Us”

Justin Baldoni and Brandon Sklenar Bring Opposites Ryle and Atlas to Life in “It Ends With Us”

Get ready for a whirlwind of emotions as Colleen Hoover’s #1 New York Times bestselling novel, It Ends With Us, comes to life on the big screen. This captivating story follows Lily Bloom’s journey to a new life in the bustling city of Boston, where she encounters opportunities for love and self-discovery.

    The Charismatic Ryle Kincaid

Enter Ryle Kincaid, a charismatic neurosurgeon who immediately captivates Lily. Actor Justin Baldoni, renowned for his role as Rafael Solano in Jane the Virgin, takes on the challenge of portraying Ryle while also directing the film. Interestingly, it was Hoover herself who suggested Baldoni for the role.

“Ryle may not be exactly what viewers expect,” Baldoni explains. “I wanted to portray him as a complex, smart man who has never dealt with old traumas. There is absolutely no excuse for what he does in the film. We wanted to show an example of a complex and seemingly impossible situation that so many people live through. Showing that there may be real love while not running away from that fact that there is also real harm.”

    The Return of Atlas Corrigan

As Lily and Ryle’s relationship unfolds, her childhood sweetheart, Atlas Corrigan, reenters her life. Brandon Sklenar, who plays Atlas, describes him as the antithesis of Ryle. “Atlas and Ryle are polar opposites,” Sklenar notes. “Ryle has a manipulative, toxic presence. Atlas is strong and sturdy, an example of what masculinity can be in a calm, present, and open way. Unlike Ryle, he has no need for validation. When he’s with Lily, he’s just purely there for her.”

    DF 20699 20690 r 2000x1333 thumbnail

A Tale of Contrast and Growth

Hoover highlights the contrast between these two pivotal characters and praises Sklenar’s portrayal of Atlas. “Atlas is who Ryle wishes he could be: someone who doesn’t blame his past for his present,” Hoover shares. “Atlas has learned and grown from his hardships, rather than shrinking because of them. I needed to see an openness and tenderness in Atlas that we wish wasn’t missing in Ryle, and Brandon portrays that beautifully.”

Adapting the Novel for the Screen

Baldoni and the team took creative liberties with the adaptation, with the blessing of Hoover’s fans, to gradually unveil the abusive nature of Lily and Ryle’s relationship. “We decided to bring that realization out slowly, like a recovered memory,” Baldoni explains, ensuring a powerful and impactful narrative experience.

    A Cathartic Journey

Prepare to embark on a cathartic and emotional journey with It Ends With Us, arriving in Philippine cinemas on August 7. The film, directed by Justin Baldoni and produced by Alex Saks, Jamey Heath, Blake Lively, and Christy Hall, stars Blake Lively, Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, Amy Morton, and Brandon Sklenar. The screenplay, written by Christy Hall, is based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel.

  • “Harold and the Purple Crayon” Comes to Life in a New Fantasy Comedy Film Starring Zachary Levi

“Harold and the Purple Crayon” Comes to Life in a New Fantasy Comedy Film Starring Zachary Levi

Countless families have cherished Crockett Johnson’s Harold and the Purple Crayon since its publication in 1955. The timeless story of an adventurous toddler who creates entire worlds with his magical purple crayon is getting a delightful twist in its latest film adaptation. In this version, Harold has grown up in his fantastical world and decides to draw a door into the real, modern world.

    An Adventure Beyond Imagination

Producer John Davis shares insights into the thrilling journey Harold embarks upon in the film. “Harold and his friends are transformed from characters on the page to adventurers on a journey of self-discovery,” Davis says. “Their story is brimming with passion, imagination, and a sense of heart.”

Oscar-nominated director Carlos Saldanha, who read the original story to his own children, brings a deep personal connection to the film. “The original story is very simple and charming,” he reflects. “I love the way this movie expands on it. In the book, Harold is very sheltered, but entering the real world exposes him to the harsh realities of everyday life. He discovers new emotions, becoming a more complete and fuller human character, all while retaining his innocence.”

    DF 00847 r 2000x1333 thumbnail

    A Star-Studded Cast

Playing the role of the intrepid Harold is Zachary Levi, who sees the film as more than an adaptation. “Harold and the Purple Crayon is a love letter to imagination itself,” Levi remarks. “There is no Harold without imagination. The power of imagination is just as integral to the movie as it is to the book.” When asked what he’d draw if he had Harold’s purple crayon, Levi opts for convenience. “The airplane scene was a lot of fun,” he says. “Maybe I’d draw a plane.”

Co-star Zooey Deschanel, who has also read the book to her children, shares her excitement. “I’ve been reading the book to my kids since they were really little,” she says. “It’s a much beloved book in my house, and I think this is the type of movie parents will want to go see with their kids.”

    Rediscovering the Magic

Director Saldanha finds magic in something as mundane as a crayon and invites audiences to share that magic and rediscover the power of imagination. “Pick up a crayon, and the possibilities are endless,” he enthuses. “With everything happening in our daily lives, we forget the power of the imagination, the power of believing, the power of dreaming, and the power of ‘drawing’ your way into a better place. This film invites audiences to rediscover that magic.”

So, grab a friend and set off into a world of adventure as Harold and the Purple Crayon opens in Philippine cinemas on August 21. #HaroldAndThePurpleCrayon

A Tale of Friendship and Art

“Look Back” is an endearing, tearjerker film that explores the beauty of friendship. Fans and critics alike have raved about its heartfelt narrative and emotional depth since its release in Japan. This anime film adaptation of a one-shot manga tells the story of two small-town girls, Fujino and Kyomoto, who are polar opposites. Fujino is overly confident, while Kyomoto is a shy shut-in. However, their shared love for drawing manga brings them together in an unexpected and profound friendship.

    Critical Acclaim and Popularity

The original “Look Back” manga was a huge hit in Japan, reaching over 4 million reads within just two days of publication. The movie adaptation has been equally successful, grossing more than 1 billion yen in less than 20 days.

Screen Rant praised the film’s animation, direction, and writing, stating, “In many ways, Look Back does an even better job of showing off Tatsuki Fujimoto’s talents than the Chainsaw Man anime did. It’s already an easy contender for the best anime film of 2024, if not the best-animated film of 2024 overall.”

    Emotional Depth and Unique Atmosphere

But Why Tho emphasized the emotional depth of “Look Back,” writing, “While I cried when reading Fujimoto’s original manga, I felt myself weeping even more while watching the Look Back anime.” They further elaborated, “The score and the small movements of wind that carry their connection through time and space feel gargantuan even within the small scale of the film. From the four-panel comics being animated to the main story itself, the animation captures whimsy, melancholy, and romance. It’s a unique atmosphere that almost defies explanation, much like Fujimoto’s manga.”
