FDCP to celebrate the enduring legacy of Eddie Romero and National Artists for Film in a nationwide Philippine Film Industry Month 2024

The FDCP, under its government mandate, leads the Philippine Film Industry Month (PFIM). In its fourth year, PFIM 2024 promises an unforgettable tribute to the nation’s cinematic heritage, with the theme ‘Tuloy ang Tradisyon ng Pelikulang Pilipino,’ honoring the legacies of National Artists for Film, especially marking the 100th birth anniversary of Eddie Romero.

Throughout September, the FDCP will bring the nation together through a series of film screenings, events, and new initiatives designed to showcase the cultural and historical importance of these cinematic icons.

Below is the calendar of activities for the Philippine Film Industry Month 2024:

Sept. 1 – PFIM Opening Ceremony at the Metropolitan Theater

The Philippine Film Industry Month will commence with a special screening of Eddie Romero’s 1980 period drama film “Aguila” and a mini-exhibit for Eddie Romero at the historic Metropolitan Theater. Through this special tribute, the FDCP aims to pay homage to Romero’s cinematic legacy that continues to inspire contemporary Filipino filmmakers and audiences.

This event is in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)
and the Metropolitan Theater with the support of FPJ Productions.

Sept. 4-27 – Pamanang Pelikula: Honoring the Masterpieces of National Film Legends
at FDCP Cinematheque Centres

The FDCP will present classic films by National Artists at Cinematheque Centres in Manila, Iloilo, Negros, Davao, and Nabunturan, with accompanying talkbacks. On September 4, Cinematheque Centre Manila will host an exhibit and screening of canonical works that significantly contributed to Philippine cinema.

The films to be screened at Cinematheque Centres nationwide are:

Sept. 13 – PFIM Gala Night at the Teatrino Promenade

The PFIM Gala Night, the highlight of Philippine Film Industry Month, will honor National Artists for Film with special performances by celebrities and celebrate industry milestones with filmmakers, luminaries, and officials.

Sept. 14 – Films for Peace Opening at Intramuros Centro de Turismo

The FDCP will officially launch Films for Peace on September 14 along with a special screening of Mario O’Hara’s “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos.” Films for Peace recognizes film as a powerful tool to promote conflict resolution, cultural dialogue, and social justice.

Sept. 15-21 – Films for Peace screenings at Cinematheque Centres

The Films for Peace lineup features Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s Bagong Buwan, Sheron Dayoc’s Women of the Weeping River, and Mario O’Hara’s Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, screening nationwide at Cinematheque Centres.

On September 15, Cinematheque Centre Nabunturan will host a panel with Mindanaoan filmmakers and a screening of Kip Oebanda’s Liway, focusing on cinema’s role in promoting conflict resolution and social cohesion.

Sept. 17-18 – Film Education Convention (FilmEC) at De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde

The inaugural Film Education Convention (FilmEC) is a dynamic two-day event showcasing top student films, engaging panel discussions, and film book sales. Designed for students and educators, FilmEC aims to elevate film education in the Philippines and inspire the next generation of filmmakers.

Sept. 18-24 – PFIM x PCIM: Sine50: Pelikula ng Bayan Screenings and Film Talks at Trinoma, SM Southmall, Robinsons Galleria, and Cinematheque Centres

A joint celebration of PFIM and the Philippine Creative Industries Month (PFIM), Pelikula ng Bayan showcases regional films from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, celebrating Philippine cinema as a unified national treasure. In partnership with CEAP, selected films will screen at cinemas for only PHP 50.

Sept. 27 – PFIM x PCIM: DGPI-FDCP Film Pitch at Seda Vertis North

Following last year’s success, the FDCP and Directors’ Guild of the Philippines, Inc. will present DGPI-FDCP Film Pitch 2024. Fifteen selected filmmakers will pitch their projects to producers, with pre-event mentorship from an industry expert at the DGPI-FDCP Film Pitch Workshop on September 7.

Sept. 27 – PFIM Closing Ceremony at Seda Vertis North

The FDCP will conclude the 4th Philippine Film Industry Month with a closing ceremony honoring contributors to Philippine cinema. The event will feature the announcement of the Philippine entry for the 97th Academy Awards, unveil FDCP’s upcoming initiatives, and showcase PFIM 2024 highlights and FDCP’s achievements.

By celebrating Philippine Film Industry Month, the FDCP reaffirms its commitment to nurturing and sustaining the growth of Philippine cinema.

Enter the World of “Blink Twice.” Meet the Cast of Zoë Kravitz’s Directorial Debut, in Cinemas August 21

Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, “Blink Twice,” is a party-turned-nightmare about the want of power, the abuse of power and taking power back. The film features a captivating performance from Naomi Ackie as Frida, a complicated heroine who challenges victim narratives.

On why she cast Ackie as her film’s main character, Frida, Kravitz says that Ackie brought a sweetness to Frida that she wasn’t expecting. “It was a bigger leap than I was thinking originally from the badass that she becomes,” Kravitz says of Ackie’s performance. “There’s a big innocence to her that’s part of her face too.”

For the other main character, Slater King, Kravitz wanted someone who was charming and who would make the audience feel safe. “Who else is that but Channing Tatum?” she says. “The whole world would be like, yes, I would go on vacation with you and feel totally safe. There’s nothing creepy about him.”

In the psychological thriller “Blink Twice,” when tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks immediately fly. He then invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. But as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. She’ll have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out of this party alive.

Keeping the party alive

For the characters that surround Frida and Slater – the women in Frida’s position and the guys that are part of Slater’s posse – Kravitz was intent on building an ensemble that the audience wanted to hang out with, keeping the party alive before things get very dark.

“It was important that it felt like one big group,” says the director. In that she looked to bring in a range of personalities. Christian Slater plays Vic, the jerk that the rest of them put up with, while Haley Joel Osment is Tom, who has a sweetness that masks microaggression. Simon Rex is Cody, in Kravitz’s words an “overly Kumbaya dude” who annoys the other guests as he blathers on about what he has made for dinner, while Levon Hawke is the innocent Lucas.

Frida arrives with her best friend Jess, played by Alia Shawkat. “Jess is kind of the whistleblower, if you will,” Shawkat says.

According to Ackie, cultivating a “best friend vibe” with Shawkat was easy. “We found out we had a similar sense of humor,” Ackie says. “We were dancing together, we were drinking together, we were talking about deep s**t, we were talking about art, we were talking about friendship.”

In addition to Frida and Jess, the other women on the island include Adria Arjona as Sarah, a “Survivor” alum with whom other women feel competitive, as well as Liz Caribel Sierra and Trew Mullen as the fun-loving Camila and Heather, respectively. In Heather, Kravitz fulfilled her dream of wanting to create “a female Spicoli, stoner character.” Spicoli is the stoner dude in the 1982 cult classic “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” popularized by Sean Penn.

“They are all kind of based on people that I know and kind of finding the different personalities and fitting them together was like a puzzle,” Kravitz says.

Geena Davis, meanwhile, plays Stacy, one of Slater’s sisters, who symbolizes female complicity in his actions. Considering Davis’s activism around women in film, her presence offers a bit of a meta text for the viewer. “I’ve been such a huge fan of Geena’s forever,” Kravitz says. “She’s one of the people who has been having this conversation way before, so the fact that she read it and got it and wanted to be a part of it, felt really good.”

As for the caliber of the ensemble, producer Bruce Cohen says: “We punched way above our weight in terms of getting this extraordinary ensemble of actors to be in the movie in what on the page could have been smaller parts than they might have been interested in.”

Fellow producer Tiffany Persons agrees, saying that the casting is what “made the magic.”

Doug Roberts (Paul Newman) is the architect who designed the 138-storey Glass Tower, the tallest building in the world. But during the dedication ceremony for the skyscraper, an electrical short circuit starts a fire. San Francisco Fire Department chief Michael O’Hallorhan (Steve McQueen) arrives on the scene to help put out the fires, but with inadequate wiring that causes more fires, and the building being too high for such an emergency, will the people at the Tower survive? Tim Burton, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder Reunite for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” in Cinemas September 4

The Juice is loose, Baby!

The mischief-making demon in black-and-white stripes is back! Michael Keaton returns as Beetlejuice, the bio-exorcist with a penchant for chaos, in the much-anticipated sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” This film, directed by the visionary Tim Burton, reunites original cast members Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz) and Catherine O’Hara (Delia Deetz) with newcomers Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe. The film promises to deliver the same dead(ly) charm, ghastly humor, and quirky antics that made the 1988 original a cult classic.

A Long-Awaited Reunion

“It’s great when you see people that you haven’t seen for a while, and then you go back into it,” says Burton. “I didn’t realize it’s been like decades. You know, it felt like yesterday, and it’s quite amazing when that happens. It was great. Honestly, it was strangely emotional seeing them all together again. But that’s what made it a special thing.”

Despite the success of the original film, discussions of a sequel floated around for years without much traction. Burton reveals that what ultimately drew him back was the idea of revisiting the Deetz family 35 years later. “It’s like, what happened to the Deetz family? You know, it’s 35 years later, what happened to Lydia, this interesting teenager? And so you start to use your own life experience: you’re an interesting teenager. What happens when you become an adult? Do you have children? What are your relationships like? What have you become? Things happen to all of us as we get older and change – relationships, children – all those things. That was the nucleus of it for me that got me back interested in it – what happened to the Deetz family. It was quite emotional for me to revisit these characters.”

The Plot Thickens

In “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the Deetz family is drawn back to their eerie roots in Winter River following an unexpected family tragedy. Lydia’s life is thrown into turmoil when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), stumbles upon the mysterious model of the town in the attic, accidentally reopening the portal to the Afterlife. With Beetlejuice lurking just a name away, chaos is sure to ensue as the demon prepares to unleash his signature brand of mayhem once more.

The screenplay, crafted by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (“Wednesday”), with a story developed alongside Seth Grahame-Smith (“The LEGO® Batman Movie”), brings fresh twists to the beloved characters while paying homage to the original film.

A Nervous Return

Michael Keaton, who made Beetlejuice one of his most iconic roles, admits he was nervous about stepping back into the character’s shoes. “I was nervous, really nervous, because the choice that I made, that was a big leap. It was a risky move that happened to have worked. So then, you think, ‘Oh geez, can I pull that off again after all these years?’ I think there was way more pressure on this one – we didn’t really want to mess this up. I was very nervous about it and me. But we hope we got there. I think we did.”

Keaton was especially thrilled to reunite with his original co-stars, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. “I was praying they would be back in it; you really need Catherine and Winona. To have them back was really fun. Winona is the sweetest and she just fit right back in… And Catherine’s a pal of mine – this is the third time we’ve worked together. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Winona Ryder, who reprises her role as Lydia Deetz, echoes Keaton’s sentiments, describing the experience as “startlingly similar” to the original film. “startlingly similar. I don’t want to say even better, but… Well, these are the same characters, but they’re just older. Having been through the first one and the effect that it had, there was pressure in coming back to it, but there was also this complete trust, because it’s Tim. And also, I was going into something really, really brilliant and really special, because I’d been there when I was 15. And that’s all Tim, and that’s all Tim’s heart. His heart is just so fun, and it’s such a beautiful playground of emotion and humor, and everybody lives inside of it. You get to live in it for that time and it’s a really, really beautiful place to be.”

For Catherine O’Hara, who plays Delia Deetz, the “Beetlejuice” world holds a special place in her heart, not just for the fun but for personal reasons as well. “I met my husband [production designer Bo Welch] on the original, so that’s my first thought when I think, ‘What does that movie mean to me?’” she shares. “He designed the sets for the first movie. And Tim made him ask me out. So, I love them both.” Working with Burton, Keaton and Ryder on the sequel was “so fun! Like no time has passed,” says O’Hara. “It’s got the same great, loose, fun vibe that the first movie had. And that comes from the top… Tim and his great producers, who let him do what he does best.”

“Alien: Romulus” Brings Spine-chilling Suspense with the Return of the Xenomorphs – in Cinemas Now

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Alien: Romulus’ gives justice to the aliens and still finds time to get weird

You don’t need to see the six films in the ‘Alien’ franchise to understand the story but ‘Alien: Romulus’ takes its time to pay tribute to the first four films in the franchise that a quick watch of those films would be a pleasant treat before catching this installment. Directed and written by Fede Alvarez and co-written with Rodo Sayagues, ‘Alien: Romulus’ is a classic creature feature that takes its time to set up the dramatic situation before it starts delivering on its promise of thrills and spills. It makes full use of its science fiction and horror genre to deliver a story that still manages to stay true to the essence of the franchise’s underlying message that capitalism, in the form of the megacorporation known as Weyland-Yutani Corp, is still our biggest threat, even in the face of one of the most terrifying creatures ever created on fiction.

The film follows the story of Rain, played by the versatile Cailee Spaeny, who has transformed after such breakout performance in ‘Civil War’ and ‘Priscilla.’ Rain is trapped in a mining colony, trying to finish off her contract with the corporation so that she can leave and move to a planet where she can actually see the sun. The mining colony is an unforgiving place that has taken the lives of her parents, and she now lives with her “brother,” the busted synthetic Andy, played excellently by David Jonsson. When she discovers that her contract has been extended, she decides to take an offer by an old friend, Tyler (Archie Renaux) to fly to space to hijack an abandoned ship floating in orbit around the planet. The ship contains cryogenic sleep pods that will allow Tyler, Rain, and the rest of their crew to make it to a more hospitable planet several lightyears away.

Everything goes according to plan until they discover that the ship is not just a ship but a space station and that something very bad happened inside leaving the whole crew dead. As they reboot and repower the space station, a vessel so big its partitioned into two areas and called Romulus and Remus, they end up waking the alien lifeforms that the ship has been carrying all this time.

With the alien lifeforms known as xenomorphs now awakened, Tyler, Rain, Andy, and the rest of the crew are now trying to escape with their lives.

Alvarez takes his time to let us get to know the characters: to imply the possibility that Rain and Tyler may have had a relationship before; the reason why Bjorn (Spike Fearn), one of Tyler’s crew, hates synthetics and treats Andy badly; that Tyler’s sister, Kay (Isabela Merced), has a secret of her own; and the nature of the bond between Rain and Andy and why she calls him her brother.

In fact, it is Rain and Andy’s relationship that serves as the heart and soul of the film. The moment the xenomorphs are awakened and are out for the kill, the story becomes one big chase sequence, the crew just trying to survive but what keeps it from becoming just shlock is that Rain and Andy’s relationship turns complex as realizations are discovered in the attempts to survive. This becomes the emotional core of the film and by questioning the humanity of an AI and our ability to empathize with it adds another dimension to the film and widens the scope of the film’s genre.

On the horror side of things, Alvarez knows exactly how to set up a scene, how to use his framing to create tension and fear. He pays wonderful tribute to Ridley Scott’s mise-en-scene in ‘Alien’ with the way he sets up his horror sequences while taking cues from James Cameron’s ‘Aliens’ when the film goes full-on action mode. From David Fincher in ‘Alien 3,’ he manages to adopt the sense of claustrophobia in the setting and the weirdness of Jean-Pierre Jeunet of ‘Alien: Resurrection.’

While managing to pay homage to the films prior, Alvarez goes a little crazy in the last twenty minutes of the film, throwing in the kitchen sink and creating dramatic situations that are so big that they feel somewhat ludicrous already but the steady build up to this was so well-paced that it feels earned. The fact that it gets weird, much like Jeunet’s installment in the franchise, bordering on campy, feels right and not out of place.

‘Alien: Romulus’ is an enjoyable addition to the franchise that truly respects and honors the idea of the xenomorph while staying true to its goal to question the ways by which capitalism, in the form of mega corporations, would choose technology and profit over human lives. That is still embedded in the DNA of this film and I’m all for it. If this film manages to get people to watch the older films in the process, then that’s the added bonus. As a sci-fi horror film, ‘Alien: Romulus’ does the job and then some.
