“Transformers One”: Star-Studded Cast Brings Epic Origin Story to Life, In Cinemas September 18

Transformers fans, get ready! The origin story you’ve been waiting for is finally here – “Transformers One.”

    T1 FP 107

“We’re Transformers! We are Transformers!” an enthusiastic B-127 shouts in Transformers One, the first fully CG-animated Transformers movie. Voiced by comedian Keegan-Michael Key, B-127 (aka Bumblebee) comes alive like never before, and Key is thrilled to be part of the magic.

    Giving Bumblebee a Voice

Bumblebee has long been a fan favorite, yet his character had never truly spoken. For Key, this was an incredible opportunity. “I really enjoyed being able to give Bumblebee a voice. Over the last few movies he speaks through the radio inside the Volkswagen, which I thought was so cool,” says Key. “But now we get to imbue him with personality through his voice and I was really honored that I got the opportunity to do that.”

    No Humans, Just Transformers

Brian Tyree Henry, who voices D-16/Megatron, brings a fresh take on one of cinema’s most iconic villains. “What I really like about this one is that it is truly the beginning. And we got all the humans out of the way,” he says. “We start on Cybertron, which is where they originate, which is their home. Get the humans out of there, humans complicate stuff. We want to see where they started. We want to see what Cybertron looked like. This is the way to do it.” For Henry, the absence of human characters brings the focus back to what makes the Transformers universe so compelling—the rich, emotional arcs of its robotic heroes and villains.

A Fresh Spin on the Franchise

For Scarlett Johansson, who voices Elita-1, being a part of Transformers One was an absolute joy. “I loved the script. It, like, ignites the kid in me, and so I think parents would appreciate that,” says Johansson. “But it’s also just really fun. A new generation is going to get to experience Transformers in a whole new way. It’s going to be awesome.”

    The Epic Origin Story

Transformers One tells the untold origin story of the two characters who would become sworn enemies: Optimus Prime and Megatron. At one time, they were close allies, bonded like brothers, but events would unfold that would forever alter their destinies—and the fate of Cybertron. Voicing the young Optimus Prime, known as Orion Pax, is none other than Chris Hemsworth. The star-studded cast also includes Steve Buscemi as Starscream, Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion, and Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime.

This exciting chapter in the Transformers universe will showcase the deep bond between Optimus Prime and Megatron before their rivalry shattered the future of Cybertron.

  • Sinag Maynila Review: ‘Her Locket’ is an uneven tale that tries to do too much

Sinag Maynila Review: ‘Her Locket’ is an uneven tale that tries to do too much

‘Her Locket,’ a film directed by J.E. Tiglao, from a script by Tiglao and Maze Miranda, is mixed bag of stories where some narratives play out better than others, while some of the more interesting ideas of the film are left out completely. Set primarily in the home of Jewel Ouyang (Rebecca Chuaunsu), a woman suffering from dementia, and her son, the lawyer Kyle (Boo Gabunada), her memories start to return after finding a locket that holds a phot of her and her family. She relates these stories to her new caregiver, Teresa (Elora Espano), who has issues of her own concerning her father and who carries a desperate need to change her appearance.

The film jumps back and forth through time, detailing Jewel’s complicated relationship with her parents and her brother Magnus (Benedict Cua as the younger version, Francis Mata as the older version) that includes leaving architecture to pursue an actor career and her frowned-upon relationship with a Filipino (Tommy Alejandrino), Each story is its own little movie that attempts to build the momentum for a confrontation between the older Jewel and the older Magnus after Magnus has taken what is rightfully hers.

    Her Locket 4.39.20
Captured from YouTube: Her Locket Trailer 2024

The film attempts to tell many stories: one of mental health and the struggles one faces when living with dementia and caring for someone with dementia; the complexities of Filipino-Chinese traditions and how they can be oppressive for the younger generation; through Teresa, there’s a story about trust and loyalty and a need to run away from her past while Jewel, recalling now all her lost memories because of the locket, is ready to confront her history and face off with her brother.

Telling all of these stories, ‘Her Locket’ becomes a mixed bag because the script struggles to connect all these stories thematically. While there is a parallelism that is attempted with Jewel and Teresa’s need to face their past, the stakes are very different for both characters. Jewel’s oppression is cultural, but she has the means to take a stand and she has the strength to choose the path of kindness despite all that’s done to her. On the other hand, Teresa’s oppression is economic, and she does not have the means to easily face up to the challenges. The comparison isn’t equal, so it has a hard time finding synergy within the film’s overall narrative.

At the same time, the story tackles the complex traditions of the Filipino-Chinese family – their push towards business rather than the arts, arranged marriages, their resistance to mixed race relationships, and their strict beliefs against queer children – but these are stories that have all been told before in one way or another in books, movies, and television shows. I know that these issues still exist but their appearance in this film doesn’t offer any new insight or perspective into these narratives.

    Her Locket 4.39.46
Captured from YouTube: Her Locket Trailer 2024

The writing also has a habit of painting its characters with only one palette, rendering many of the characters as one-dimensional such as Magnus and even Jewel. The most complex character in the film is Teresa, whose story feels adjunct to the rest of the movie. Her relationship with Jewel is the heart and soul of the film with Chuaunsu and Espano creating a palpable chemistry that grounds the film.

The best parts of the film go to the flashback featuring Sophie Ng as a younger Jewel. Ng has a way of breathing life into the role that even if she is written as a character straight out of a melodrama – a martyr, a victim, kind to a fault – she makes it believable. Her scenes with Tommy Alejandrino are the strongest, where Tiglao shows a capable hand of playing out the romance of their storyline. Their chemistry is strong, and their scenes brings life to the film. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last long.

    Her Locket 4.40.07
Captured from YouTube: Her Locket Trailer 2024

There are storylines that are presented that are never played out that could have given us a new perspective of things such as Jewel becoming an actress despite her mother’s disappointment, or a further examination of her relationship with her father, which is given just a few scenes. Those are vital but when you consider that the film’s third act is that of a courtroom drama and the children’s relationship with their father is put on centerstage, there should have been more.

‘Her Locket’ is an ambitious piece that leans in the more familiar narratives and tried to put them all in into one movie that its parts are far better than the sum. But the performances from Ng, Alejandrino, and Espano are something to remember.

    My Rating:

    stars 2 5

Her Locket, a finalist in the #SinagMaynila2024 Feature Film Category, is in select cinemas from September 4-10, 2024.

  • The Daltons face-off against Paddy, played by James McAvoy, and his reign of terror in “Speak No Evil.”

The Daltons face-off against Paddy, played by James McAvoy, and his reign of terror in “Speak No Evil.”

The Daltons try to survive as their dream vacation turns into a psychological nightmare in Speak No Evil, the latest thriller from Blumhouse. In the film, the contrast between the Dalton family and Paddy’s family sets the tone for the insidious horror that simmers and eventually gets unleashed.

    2575 D008 00150R min

The Daltons, an American family struggling with their life in England, have a chance meeting with a British family during a trip to Italy, and get invited to get away from it all on their rustic countryside farmhouse. The Daltons consist of Ben(Scoot McNairy), his wife Louise(Mackenzie Davis), and their daughter Agnes. Ben is stuck in an unfulfilling rut as his career was upended shortly after moving his whole family to London from the United States. He feels emasculated at the prospect of unemployment and not being able to provide for his family.

    2575 D023 00202R min

Louise Dalton, dragged to the opposite side of the ocean into a prospect that went nowhere, feels unhappy and anxious about the future of her family, which carries over to her relationship with her husband and daughter. She finds herself feeling disconnected from Ben, and her anxiety makes her overprotective with Agnes (Alix West Lefler), who feels the tension within the family as well. A smart pre-teen, she manages her tendency to worry with her comfort plushy, Hoppy, which Ben feels that she’s too old to be carrying around everywhere.

In contrast, Paddy’s family seems very in tune with their countryside lifestyle, which they offer to share with the Daltons for the weekend. Paddy (James McAvoy), a former physician, the unnervingly hypermasculine head of the family. His strong opinions and rejection of modern societal norms, bely a darkness within him, but on the surface he is refreshingly brash. His wife Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) is undoubtedly his better half, with a softer charm and inviting personality. They seem to be a perfect match, and to top it all off is their son Ant (Dan Hough). Mute from a genetic condition, he seems to be shy, but hits it off with Agnes immediately. Paddy’s family seems to be picture perfect, and what the Daltons aspire to be, until the darkness takes hold and the weekend getaway turns into a fight for survival.

  • Twenty Years and Counting: How Pioneer Cinemalaya Filmmakers Started and Persisted

Twenty Years and Counting: How Pioneer Cinemalaya Filmmakers Started and Persisted

To date, Cinemalaya has nurtured over 200 Filipino filmmakers and showcased over 1,000 of their works, including full-feature films, shorts, documentaries, Filipino film classics, and art films.

The country’s biggest and pioneering independent film festival has been relentless in developing and supporting the production of independent Filipino films since it was founded in 2005, bringing new narratives that embody the ever-evolving landscape of Filipino cinema each year.

Shortly after celebrating its 20th year, the Cinemalaya has once again welcomed another batch of filmmakers for their turn in articulating and freely interpreting the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity. With two decades under its belt and more than a handful of filmmakers bolstered to success, we look back to some of the pioneers who started the tradition.

    Michael Angelo Dagnalan

“Hindi ako makapaniwala na magiging direktor ako,” said 2005 Cinemalaya director Michael Angelo Dagñalan. “Nagbukas ng napakaraming pintuan at bintana ang pagsali ko sa Cinemalaya.”

Dagñalan is a writer, director, and a composer/vocalist for the alternative rock band KontraLuz. He also founded Kuwentista Productions, a creative studio for film, television, and advertising. His debut full-length film Isnats is a crime-comedy film about a snatcher stealing a drug dealer’s phone.

He worked with a script he already finished writing before joining Cinemalaya – a script he peddled to directors for two years, to no avail. When Cinemalaya came, he seized the opportunity to finally see his work come to life.

“Malaking bagay siya kasi parang nabigyan ka ng pagkilala, ng kredibilidad na makatapos ng feature film na mahirap i-mount talaga. Kahit hanggang ngayon naman, mahirap mag-mount ng pelikula. Nakakatawa kasi nag-hang pa nga ‘yung DVD ng Isnats during premiere night.”

Isnats also won First Prize at the Dulang Pampelikula category of the 52nd Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. It was chosen as an exhibition film at the 7th Cinemanila International Film Festival and included in the official selection at the New York Filipino Film Festival.

    Rica Arevalo

For Rica Arevalo, the first to win the Balangay trophy for Best Director, Cinemalaya was a great experience since they were trained to be professional filmmakers.

“Secondary na lang ‘yung awards para sa akin,” she said. “Ginawa ko ‘yung film kasi gusto ko siyang gawin at meron akong gustong sabihin.”

Arevalo is a writer, director, and educator. She is currently the head of the Education Division of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

The filmmaker revealed she had a soft spot for films about family, which led her to debut with ICU Bed #7, a quiet, funny and moving family drama about an ailing father and how his two daughters are torn whether to end or prolong his life.

Arevalo fondly shared how she already thought about Eddie Garcia as her main actor even while she was still writing the script back in 2003. Through Raymond Red, she was able to meet Garcia and cast him as the ailing father. She praised his professionalism as a veteran actor, which inspired her all the more in her craft.

ICU Bed #7 was also nominated for Digital Movie of the Year, with Arevalo for Digital Movie Director of the Year and Eddie Garcia for Movie Actor of the Year, at the 2006 Star Awards for Movies. Arevalo won second place at the 53rd Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature for the same film.

    Aloy Adlawan

Like Dagñalan and Arevalo, multi-awarded writer, director, producer, and creative executive Aloy Adlawan joined the rest of the pioneer Cinemalaya directors as a first-time full-length filmmaker.

“I’ve been with TV since 1994 until 2002. Kaya sabi ko, baka kailangan ko na magpelikula,” enthused Adlawan. “I wanted to push through with filmmaking since I already had access to the industry.”

A chemical engineer by profession, Adlawan tested the waters of making films with his debut full-length Room Boy, a drama film about a motel room boy who falls in love with a prostitute helping him find a new place to live in. It was inspired by one of the episodes he wrote for Star Drama Presents, an ABS-CBN Saturday program which featured a mix of veteran and upcoming stars from the Philippine entertainment industry from 1993 to 2001.

“Tinwist ko siya, ginawa kong pelikula na dramatic and may love story,” Adlawan mentioned. “Character-driven din, kaya doon nabuhay.”

Adlawan also shared how his ongoing career in the entertainment industry helped him with the casting, as he would write scripts with a potential actor already in mind: “Some actors look for something edgy, something dramatic, or offbeat for them, just so they can deeply explore their craft.”

In relation to exploring crafts, Dagñalan emphasizes the freedom in producing art. As someone who started out in theater and writing before transitioning to film, he celebrates the newfound accessibility of tools and resources for aspiring artists to pursue their passion.

“Excited ang tao na magkuwento dahil natural ‘yan sa atin,” Dagñalan said. “Wala naman kasing edad ang sining, ito ay imortal. Anuman ang estado mo, mayaman, mahirap, may pinag-aralan o wala, pwede kang maging kuwentista ng bayan.”

For Arevalo, who rejoices at the thriving community of young filmmakers today, new talents are always something to look forward to.

“Mas daring kasi sila, mas malakas ang loob. Kakaiba ‘yung paraan ng pagkukwento nila.”

Meanwhile, Adlawan urges aspiring filmmakers to find their voice and strive for authenticity in their craft: “Kung ganun ka ka-passionate, and you know who you are as a storyteller, as a filmmaker, as an artist, or whatever you call herself, you will always land on your feet and find yourself in the right place.”

For its next editions, Cinemalaya will surely continue to uphold its vision to discover, encourage, support, train and recognize gifted Filipino independent filmmakers.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Not taking itself too seriously, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ finds its charm in its embrace of whimsy

MOVIE REVIEW: Not taking itself too seriously, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ finds its charm in its embrace of whimsy

I’ll be the first to admit that I did not want a ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel. I loved the film when it first came out in the 80s. It was weird and out of the box for that era. I saw the film again two years ago on a streaming site and I was so sad that I felt the film did not age well. The pacing was off, the story a little disjointed, and with only the Day-O (Banana song) sequence to be the only sequence to have kept its charm. 36 years since the last film, a sequel seemed like a cash grab. I couldn’t imagine what they could do with the movie to make it feel fresh and new, aside from the fact that I haven’t really liked anything Tim Burton has done since ‘Big Fish.’

To my utter surprise, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ is a wild, crazy ride that is whimsical and left-of-center while somehow finding a grounded emotional core that keeps it from being just mindless fun. This is the best that Tim Burton has done in the past decade because he returned to old school aesthetics. Gone are the bright CGI effects that dominated his style like in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ or ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.’ He opts for puppetry, low-tech green screen effects, and practical sets that gives the film a charm that matches toe-for-toe with the hilarity of the film’s tone.

    Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Poster

Set 36 years after the events of the first film, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ follows Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), a widow who works as a television host for a show about haunted houses. Her gift for seeing ghosts has given her a job but it has also created a rift between her and her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega). When her father dies, Lydia takes her stepmother, Delia (Catherine O’Hara) and her boyfriend and her show’s producer, Rory (Justin Theroux) to fetch Astrid and to return to Winter River to bury Lydia’s father and to pack up their old house where the events of the first film happened. Throughout this period, she is suffering from visitations from Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), who is still in the afterlife, and still trying to get married to Lydia so he can return to the mortal plane.

    feature 22

At the core of this film is the complex relationship of Lydia, Delia, and Astrid. Astrid doesn’t believe in the supernatural and is angry at her mom for being a medium on tv. Astrid thinks her mom is faking it because, if she could see ghosts, she wonders why she’s never seen or talked to her dead father. Delia, on the other hand, walks on eggshells around Lydia. They never had the best relationship even since the first film and now she doesn’t know how to be a stepmom to Lydia, when she obviously doesn’t approve of Rory.

    Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 0022r

Things take a turn for the worst Rory, in a foolish attempt to help Lydia exorcise her past trauma summons Beetlejuice, everything turns chaotic, and Lydia must face her past if she wants to save her daughter.

Interestingly enough, ‘Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice’ takes its time with its story, re-establishing us to the characters while introducing us to the new ones. It takes a whole hour before the multiple storylines come together. There’s a storyline involving Monica Belluci as Delores, the first wife of Beetlejuice, which is completely unnecessary to the whole plot and can be removed but everything else comes wonderfully together after the one-hour mark and we see Lydia and Delia and Astrid all grow from this crazy adventure.

    Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 08620

The film is not afraid to be silly while tackling, albeit in a whimsical manner, topics like grief and complex family dynamics. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and allows all of its actors to have fun – including Willem Dafoe, for his hilarious take on a former B movie actor turned detective in the afterlife – that the effect is infectious. It leans on the 80s and 90s for its aesthetic and music and it manages audience expectations quite well that if you surrender to crazy antics, you’ll have a lot of fun.

I didn’t want this sequel but I’m very surprised at how much fun I had while watching it. It’s great to see Keaton and Ryder and O’ Hara having a ball.
