  • Caleb McLaughlin Voices a Small Goat With Big Dreams in Sony Pictures Animation’s “GOAT,” in Cinemas February 11

Caleb McLaughlin Voices a Small Goat With Big Dreams in Sony Pictures Animation’s “GOAT,” in Cinemas February 11

A Small Goat Ready to Take on a Big League

In a world where the biggest animals dominate the biggest sport, one small goat is ready to challenge the rules. GOAT, the latest animated feature from Sony Pictures Animation, introduces audiences to an all-animal universe where roarball reigns supreme—and size often decides success. At the center of the action is Will Harris, a gifted young player whose passion for the game burns brighter than any doubt thrown his way.

    GOAT Will2

Will has heard it all before: “smalls don’t ball.” Still, armed with talent, confidence, and an unshakable dream, he refuses to be sidelined. His goal is simple yet daring—to play alongside his heroes and prove that heart matters just as much as strength.

Caleb McLaughlin Finds Meaning in Will’s Journey

Voicing Will is Caleb McLaughlin, widely known for his work on Stranger Things. The actor saw an immediate connection between himself and the determined young goat.

“Will is a hero in his own world,” says McLaughlin. “He’s got this bigger vision for himself and for the people he loves, and that’s what keeps him going. He’s inspired by the role models around him, and I totally connect to that idea of being on a personal quest with a lot of heart behind it.”

That emotional bond translates into a performance filled with warmth, confidence, and authenticity—making Will a character audiences can root for from start to finish.

    Watch the Trailer here:

    A Reflection of Today’s Youth

Director Tyree Dillihay describes Will as a symbol of the younger generation—driven, passionate, and unafraid to chase dreams without a clear path.

“He represents the youth generation,” Dillihay says. “He doesn’t have a route to get there but he’s hungry, passionate, hardheaded. He wears an armor of courage and strength and go-get-it-ness. I love that about Will.”

Will’s journey mirrors the reality many young dreamers face today: uncertain roads, loud doubts, and the courage to keep moving anyway.

    Building Will’s Confidence and Swag

Head of Character Animation Daniel Pozo and his team had a blast shaping Will’s movements and attitude. Inspired by basketball legends and McLaughlin’s on-screen presence, they crafted a character who radiates confidence.

“He’s a teenager with a lot of confidence—he’s got swag,” says Pozo. “We looked at references like Kobe Bryant when he was in high school and Caleb’s own movie performances. He exudes so much confidence in how he walks. We started with that and layered in these idiosyncratic behaviors that basketball players tend to have—they seem to always have a ball passing between their hands, always in movement.”

From the way he walks to how he handles the ball, Will’s animation reflects a player who knows he belongs on the court.

    GOAT group 2

Adding Personality, One Quirk at a Time

For McLaughlin, part of the fun was shaping Will’s small but memorable traits.

“One of the most fun parts for me was finding Will’s signature moments—like his unique laugh or those improv bits that really capture his personality,” says McLaughlin. “I think everyone has their own version of that little signature quirk—their own goat ‘baa,’ if you will. Discovering Will’s personal touch really made those scenes enjoyable.”

These playful touches give Will extra charm and make his journey feel genuine and relatable.

    More Than a Sports Story

Co-director Adam Rosette believes GOAT speaks to anyone who has ever held onto a dream, whether it involves sports or not.

“It represents what it’s like to have a dream, not only what it’s like to play sports,” he says. “It’s about Will’s dream, which just happens to be becoming a pro roarball player. If you’ve ever had a dream—something that you aspire to be—this movie is for you. There’s heart, there’s hustle and humor.”

    GOAT Will1

    Game On This February

With its uplifting message, dynamic animation, and heartfelt performances, GOAT celebrates courage, perseverance, and the power of believing in yourself—no matter your size.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Send Help

    MOVIE REVIEW: Send Help

I want Rachel McAdams to get acting nominations for her performance in this campy, gory suspense/thriller, that’s actually pretty funny if you can get past director Sam Raimi’s affinity to blood and gore. It’s definitely a feminist film, maligning the toxic masculinity that seems very apparent in corporate America. And what I love about its feminism is that it isn’t afraid to make McAdams’ Linda to be a heavily flawed character. She’s as human as the rest of us – awkward, a little obsessive, a bit unkempt and untidy – but her rage is justified. And when the narrative beats pushes her to cross the line, the film is unafraid to show that she’s just as much the villain as her boss, played by Dylan O’Brien.

Send Help follows Linda Liddle, a hardworking employee in a corporation run by the father of Dylan O’Brien’s Bradley Preston. Bradley is set to take over the company after his father’s passing, and Linda, who has been carrying the bulk of the work in her department, is hoping that the senior Preston’s promise of making her a vice-president will be honoured by Bradley. But to her shock, she’s passed over by her direct supervisor, who has taken credit for all her accomplishments at work. When she confronts Bradley head-on, he tells her she should join them on a trip to Bangkok for a merger to prove herself. But the plane malfunctions and crashes into the ocean, leaving Linda and Bradley on an island. With only Linda’s survival skills – she dreams of becoming a contestant on the hit television reality show Survivor – to keep them alive while they wait for rescue.

    Send Help

The screenplay of Damian Shannon and Mark Swift takes a satirical tone, over exaggerating the worst of corporate structures, toxic masculinity, and giving a fantastical take on Linda’s duality. At the office, she’s a mess, her hair is always untidy, her clothes are devoid of femininity, and she’s criticized for having an “odious smell” stemming from her love of tuna fish sandwiches. She’s socially awkward, and no one likes her, despite being a genius with numbers and a highly efficient workhorse. On the island, stripped of the social hierarchies and mind games of corporate life, she blooms. All her books on survival and her dreams of becoming a cast member of Survivor bring out her full potential. Here, she’s in charge. Her hair is gorgeous. In the office, her makeup is pale, attempting to give her the no-makeup look and tries (a challenge for McAdams) to make her look plain. But on the island, the makeup artist gives her a radiant glow. And the Rachel McAdams we know, who made a breathtaking debut in the Mean Girls and rose to superstardom in The Notebook makes a striking reappearance.

It’s almost a toxic masculine wet dream, but Shannon, Swift, and director Sam Raimi quickly subvert this. Linda’s personality quirks still remain, yet the power being the sole provider for her horrible boss brings out a side of her she didn’t know she had. Of course, at first, Bradley orders her around, belittles her, and mocks her, but when he realises he cannot survive on the island without her, he begins to take a more submissive role. This shift not only encourages Linda’s growth but also nudges her further tipping into the darker side of her personality.

    Send Help

The film is funny, action-packed, and horrifying all at the same time. Raimi’s use of unconventional camera angles, perspectives, and his penchant for jump scares and gore keeps the film exciting, perfect for audiences who have come for a roller-coaster ride. Even as Bradley and Linda start pushing each other’s buttons, bringing out the worst versions in themselves, you can’t help but root for Linda. The film has already positioned her as the initial victim – even as the twists and turns of the film’s narrative quickly turns that around and shift her into a perpetrator as well – and in a way, the film tackles the underdog story of gaining power and becoming the aggressor. The comedic aspect of the movie allow us to bend our morality for this film so we can excuse all her behaviour on the island.

The crowd around me as I was watching was firmly on her side, even when she went too far.

    Send Help

O’Brien serves as a great foil, portraying the toxic male nepo-baby to a tee. You enjoy hating him and constantly question when he starts to show kindness towards Linda. But make not mistake, this is McAdams’ movie through and through. She’s an amazing actress who understands the tone of camp, hitting it precisely at that frequency, yet she is able to switch it when her character undergoes an internal crisis. She finds pathos in the character and manages to bring it out even in the moments of Linda’s turn to the darker side of herself. Linda is slowly unraveling, but McAdams does it so naturally that it never feels like “a performance.” It simply settles into the rhythm of the film. I really want people to take note of this performance as a high-wire act that is not easy to do.

This movie itself is pure fun. Be ready to be grossed out, scream in agony and fright, and laugh at the absurdity of what Raimi, Shannon and Swift put these characters through. And keep your eyes on McAdams who nails this character and makes Linda completely unforgettable.

    My Rating: 4.5 Stars

A Passion That Refuses to Behave

Set against the harsh, unforgiving moors, Wuthering Heights tells the story of a love that defies society, reason, and time itself. At its core is the volatile bond between Cathy Earnshaw and Heathcliff—two kindred spirits bound by obsession and longing, yet doomed by pride and circumstance.

Cathy, raised amid neglect and isolation, yearns for beauty, wealth, and recognition, yet remains fiercely loyal to the one constant in her life: Heathcliff. Their connection is intense and all-consuming, but when ambition and temptation enter the picture, love begins to fracture.

Years later, Heathcliff returns—changed, refined, and dangerously alluring—forcing Cathy to confront the consequences of the choices she once made. What follows is a tale where romance blurs into fixation, and devotion edges toward ruin.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Nobody

    MOVIE REVIEW: Nobody

I love a good underdog story. The Chinese animated film Nobody takes a familiar narrative trope – the bad guys pretending to be good, only to discover their own innate goodness along the way – and presents it as a hilarious fantasy adventure rendered in stunning 2D art that imitates the ink-wash painting style. The humor is so surprising, and the film’s character work is so detailed that, despite the protagonists being liars, bullies, and thieves, they still endear themselves to you and carry with them a universal characteristic: to go beyond what the social order has imposed upon them.

Yao are supernatural creatures that take the form of animals. They are called demons, they rob humans of food and belongings. Yao also have their own social order. Nobody follows two low-ranking yao of King’s Cave – Pig (Ziping Chen) and Toad (Yang Lu) – who work in the kitchen of the King’s Cave leader. Toad is happy having a job, but Pig desires more. He wants to be a powerful yao, rise through the ranks of King’s Cave, and become an enforcer.

    Nobody still 3

But a hilarious mishap while cleaning dirty heirloom cauldrons leads to Pig and Toad being banished from King’s Cave. With no prospects ahead of them, Pig and Toad discover that the monk Tang Sanzang will soon be passing through the area on his way to seek powerful scriptures, along with Sun Wukong and other mighty warriors. Legend has it that any yao who eats Tang’s flesh will become immortal. Knowing that Sun Wukong could easily defeat any yao who tries to attack Tang, Pig and Toad decide to impersonate Tang and his group, hoping to beat them to the scriptures first, because whoever finds the scriptures would become powerful as well as immortal.

    Nobody still 2 1

With the help of a weasel (Wenliang Dong) and a gorilla (Cong Liu), the four yao impersonate the famous Chinese heroes (immortalized by the novel Journey to the West) and embark on an adventure that uncovers the heroes within themselves.

    Nobody

Directed by Yu Shui and written by Yu Shui and Liu Jia, Nobody is a comic onslaught set within a fantasy adventure. The dynamic between Pig and Toad is reminiscent of many buddy films, with one being the more active and brash, while the other is more careful, cautious, and prefers the simpler, practical solution. Toad is often frustrated by Pig’s stubbornness and his penchant for getting them into danger, but he always returns. Their friendship is clear as day and serves as the emotional core of the story.

    Nobody

When weasel joins the group, he is a nonstop chatterbox that cannot stop talking – a source of many hilarious comics setups – while Gorilla is an extreme introvert who struggles to express himself and is prone to crying. From the get-go, we are introduced to four underdogs: yao who are truly at the bottom of the totem pole. They are so funny, and their relationships so well developed, that they quickly endear themselves to you, leaving you rooting for them to succeed.

    Nobody

The jokes are plenty and come in various styles – slapstick, witty banter, visual comedy, farce, and irony – and it translates well. As a fantasy adventure, we get to see quite a bit of fight scenes, and Nobody is unafraid to go over-the-top and truly explosive at the finale. It’s a careful buildup, so well executed that you don’t immediately realise how meticulous the script is in building up to its climax.

    Nobody

As an underdog story, what’s wonderful to watch here is the growth of Pig, Toad, Weasel, and Gorilla. It’s quite surprising that despite all the chaos and laughter that this film manages to evoke, it still manages to hit you at the center of your chest and leaves you with warm feeling inside. Much of the careful character work, often disguised as jokes, is actually setups that prepare you for the way by which the film turns 180 by the end of the second act. This is a film that can be enjoyed by both young and old (given that they are willing to read the subtitles).

Nobody was an extremely pleasant surprise for me, and I couldn’t believe how much fun I was having watching this movie. I’m not surprised it is the most successful 2D animated movie in China, and I’m so open to seeing more.

Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Halle Berry Lead the Gripping Crime Thriller “Crime 101” This February 18

High stakes rule the game, and every move comes at a price. This February, moviegoers can brace themselves for a gripping, edge-of-your-seat cinematic experience as Crime 101 opens in Philippine cinemas on February 18.

Featuring a remarkable ensemble cast led by Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, and Barry Keoghan, Crime 101 is adapted from Don Winslow’s celebrated novella and brought to life by writer-director Bart Layton. Stylish yet grounded, the film blends suspense, emotion, and character-driven storytelling into a powerful modern crime tale.

A City Built on Desire and Discontent

Known for exploring lives lived beyond society’s rules, Layton found a compelling backdrop for his latest project in Los Angeles—a city fueled by ambition and quiet desperation. In Crime 101 characters grapple with the need to prove their worth in a place where success is measured by what you own and how you appear.

“I felt like many of the characters are slightly trapped in that sense of ‘I’m never going to feel good about my place in the world unless I have this,’” Layton says. “L.A. is a place that really nurtures that sense of: if you want to really be somebody and feel like you are of value, you need to have all the external trappings of great success. I think status anxiety is a constant thing.”

That tension pulses throughout the film, shaping every decision and consequence.

    Watch the Trailer here:

A Heist on the Edge of Perfection

At the center of the story is Davis (Chris Hemsworth), a highly skilled and elusive jewel thief whose crimes trace the stretch of the 101 freeway. Known for his precision and restraint, Davis prepares for what could be the most lucrative—and dangerous—job of his career.

His path intersects with Sharon Coombs (Halle Berry), a weary insurance broker whose profession revolves around protecting the priceless assets of Los Angeles’ elite. Disillusioned and standing at a turning point in her life, Sharon becomes entangled in a situation that threatens to unravel everything.

Closing in is Detective Lou Lubesnik (Mark Ruffalo), an LAPD investigator deeply affected by the unsolved freeway robberies. As his pursuit intensifies, the lives of Davis, Sharon, and Lou become tightly bound, setting the stage for a tense and unpredictable showdown.

A Modern Film with Classic Crime Roots

Layton drew inspiration from timeless heist and crime films such as Out of Sight, Thief, The Sting, and The Thomas Crown Affair. These influences shape Crime 101 into a movie that balances suspense with depth.

“They were grownup movies,” he says. “They had real characters and were kind of tonally not simply a comedy, a drama or a thriller. They had light and shade. I definitely thought it would be nice to remind people that those are still great experiences to have in the cinema.”

The result is a sleek yet thoughtful thriller that respects the genre while offering something refreshingly grounded.

Chris Hemsworth’s Nostalgic Return to Crime Drama

Chris Hemsworth was immediately drawn to the project’s throwback sensibility.

“I read the script and loved it because it felt like a real throwback to ‘90s thrillers,” Hemsworth says. “There was a sort of nostalgia to the story that you don’t see too much these days. I was a fan of Bart’s work and loved American Animals. It was a very character-driven drama with elaborate intersecting storylines. After our first meeting I thought not only has he written an incredibly compelling script, but he also has a brilliant vision for the film.”

Already a fan of Layton’s American Animals, Hemsworth praised the script’s layered storytelling and the director’s clear creative vision, describing the film as a deeply engaging, character-first drama.

A Film Fueled by Passion and Precision

Veteran producer Eric Fellner believes Crime 101 stands out because of the dedication behind every frame.

“I found it inspiring how good everybody was in the film, and that goes from in front of the camera to behind it,” Fellner says. “There is unbelievable production design, cinematography, costume, hair and makeup, editing, music—just every aspect.”

For him, the ultimate reward is seeing audiences connect.

“When you’re making something, the hope from a producer is that audiences will lean in, emotionally engage, and at the end breathe out a huge sigh of joy and go: ‘Wow, that was great.’”

Crime 101 promises sharp suspense, compelling performances, and a richly satisfying crime story when it opens in Philippine cinemas on February 18. Distributed locally by Columbia Pictures PH.
