  • Film Facts: 5 Things to Know About ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor is back for his fourth solo film but this time, another Thor wields Mjolnir!

Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi have teamed up yet again to bring us Thor: Love and Thunder, chronicling the God of Thunder’s latest space adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as his new quest to put a stop to Gorr the God Butcher. Alongside him in his mission is Jane Foster as the new Thor, Valkyrie, and the lovable Korg.

Watch the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder below:

Excited to see Thor: Love and Thunder on the big screen? On this list, we’ve rounded up some interesting facts that you might want to know about the new Marvel movie.

    1. Taika Waititi directs the fourth Thor film.

Thor is now the superhero with the most number of solo films in the MCU with the release of this fourth installment. This is also the second film directed by Taika Waititi, following his successful direction of Thor: Ragnarok. In case you didn’t know, Waititi also gives life to Thor’s trusted ally, Korg.

    2. Jane Foster wields the Mjolnir.

It has long been revealed that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will become the female Thor in the next film, but the story behind this turn of events has yet to be revealed. If you’re wondering how this happened in the comics, it was after Thor realized that gods were not worthy of humanity’s adoration– thanks to Gorr the God Butcher toying with his mind. This makes him incapable of lifting his mighty hammer. Jane Foster, who had cancer at the time, found that she was worthy and transforms into the goddess Thor, taking the place of the then powerless Odinson.

    3. Thor meets Zeus.

Norse mythology has long been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but shortly after Moon Knight featured Egyptian gods, the latest Thor film will also be bringing in the Greek gods into the MCU. Russell Crowe plays Zeus, who makes an appearance in the film’s trailer after Thor and the gang find themselves in Olympus.

    4. Gorr the God Butcher’s long nails almost incapacitated Christian Bale.

Fans were awed by Christian Bale’s latest transformation as the film’s Gorr the God Butcher, a terrifying vilain who is hellbent on killing all of the gods. In an interview with Deadline, the actor shared how the character’s long nails became a problem for him.

“It rendered me completely incapable of everything. I was pathetic,” said Bale. “I found myself thinking things like, ‘I don’t think I can walk because I’ve got long nails.’ It affected my brain. I was like, ‘I can’t eat, I’ve got long nails.’ I was trying to type. I couldn’t do anything.”

    5. Matt Damon will be back as actor Loki.

In Thor: Ragnarok, fans were surprised to see Matt Damon make a cameo appearance in a play happening within the film. Damon played the actor starring as Loki, while Chris Hemsworth’s brother Luke played Thor in the play. In an interview with Jess Cagle on Sirius XM, Damon confirmed that he will also be returning as actor Loki in the upcoming film.

Thor: Love and Thunder opens in cinemas nationwide this Wednesday, July 6, 2022. Book your seats in advance and buy your tickets here.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Cast and Creator on Thor’s Fourth Solo Film, ’80s Rock Music, and More

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder is the direct sequel to the 2017 film Thor: Ragnarok and the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike Doctor Strange 2 which was released prior this film, Thor’s fourth standalone movie in the MCU is filled with dance sequences, enchanted weapons, and ’80s rock.

Watch the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer below:

In a global press conference, Thor: Love and Thunder cast members Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster/The Mighty Thor), Tessa Thompson (King Valkyrie), and Christian Bale (Gorr the God Butcher) are joined by director Taika Waititi and producer and president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige talk about how this fourth standalone movie for Thor happened, the aesthetic behind the song choices, and more.

The press conference began with Chris Hemsworth who plays Thor shares that when Taika Waititi got involved, he brought out his immature, young, and adolescent quality that Thor now has, which he didn’t have in the original films. “Embodying this space as a  child would and enjoying all of it and being caught up in  the wonder and the fascination of all of it,” Hemsworth adds.

When asked why Thor is the only character in the MCU to have four solo films in his journey, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige says that the viewers respond well to Chris Hemsworth and to everything that he does. He also says that Taika Waititi brings another dimension that was always there with Chris. “For so long, we were thinking on how to make Thor more relatable and more connected to the audience and now that they are with him now, we realized we could go to a part four,” he adds.

Natalie Portman is back in this film as Doctor Jane Foster and as we have seen in the trailers, as Mighty Thor. She recalls what it was like wearing Chris’ costume which she has seen him wear all these years. “Trying the version on myself and getting fitted for all the arm cuffs, boots, and everything else was pretty surreal for the first time.”

Moving on to Gorr The God Butcher, Christian Bale shares that what everyone was looking for in Chris Hemsworth, they looked for the polar opposite for his character. “Someone not relatable, a bit of a loner, creepy, and someone no one wants to be around,” he shares. He also says that it’s a lot easier to play a villain than it is a hero. “The beauty of it is that Taika [Waititi] can make it bloody hilarious and then really moving in this story. I don’t know if it’s pushing it too much to say sympathy, but you sort of understand why this guy is making awful decisions.”

Valkyrie began his journey as a scavenger and now she is the King of New Asgard. Tessa Thompson looks back at what Stan Lee talked a lot about before that whether it’s a villain or a hero, there’s something that connects them to their power. “It was really fun to both try to inhabit the spirit and the kind of physicality that it takes to be a hero.” Valkyrie was a professional soldier for thousands of years and now finds herself kind of stuck in bureaucracy. “She’s really missing being on the battlefield and missing her sisters, so it’s been great to get to have that again with Natalie in particular as Mighty Thor,” she adds.

Soundtrack-wise, there are plenty of Guns N’ Roses in the film. Director Taika Waititi reveals that it has always been a dream of his and jokes that they wanted to spend as much money as they possibly could on some songs. “The whole aesthetic around the film was for it to be this bombastic, loud, colorful palette, which kind of reflected, like, spray painted panel vans in  the eighties and rock album covers.” And boy, did they deliver. “Even the title treatment for the film, it’s the kind of thing I would’ve drawn on my school book in class when I wasn’t listening,” he quips.

  • Rings of Horror in “The Black Phone” Starts July 20 with Sneak Previews on July 11 and 12

Based on the award-winning short story by (legendary horror author) Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts, The Black Phone follows 13-year-old Finney (Thames), who is abducted by an infamous child abductor and serial killer known as The Grabber (Hawke) in a small town in northern Denver. Locked in the killer’s basement, Finney discovers that he can hear the killer’s previous victims through a disconnected black rotary phone on the wall.

Mason Thames in the BLACK PHONE

Director Scott Derrickson shares on how the film came about, reminiscing on how he learned about the story. “I happened to stumble into a bookstore around the time the book came out. At the time, I didn’t know who Joe was, let alone that he was Stephen King’s son. I stood in the bookstore and read this short story and thought, ‘Wow, this guy is great.’ It was only about 20 pages long, but I thought the concept was fantastic and such a good idea for a movie. I never forgot about it.”

Ethan Hawke as The Grabber in The Black Phone

The inspiration for the tale came from a specific memory from Hill’s childhood. “I grew up in Bangor, Maine, in a very old house,” Hill says. “There was a phone in the basement that wasn’t connected to anything, and I found that phone creepy and unsettling. It didn’t make sense for a phone to be in a basement with a dirt floor and crumbling concrete walls. As a kid, the worst thing I could imagine was that phone ringing.”

THE BLACK PHONE Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames

The Black Phone also delves into the traumas and dangers of being a kid growing up in the ’70s and ’80s. Kids had a lot more freedom back then, which made them a lot more susceptible to danger, but also kept kids on their toes. For Hill, the recreation of that era in the film proved particularly vivid and personal.  For Gen Xers, children of the ’70s, this was a time without anti-bullying initiatives, where, for boys in particular, learning to defend oneself against mean kids was considered a normal rite of passage.  “My earliest memory up until high school was the violence of the neighborhood that I lived in,” Derrickson says. “The primary feeling that I remember having as a child was fear. I was the youngest kid on the street full of bullies.”

    The Black Phone

Released by Universal Pictures International, set your alarms and watch The Black Phone in local cinemas nationwide starting July 20.  Rated R13 by the MTRCB (only 13 years old above can watch in cinemas).

Catch it earlier on July 11 and 12 with its sneak previews in select cinemas nationwide.

  • Beautiful Chaos: a review of ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’

It was exhausting watching ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once.’ Exhausting physically. Exhausting mentally. Exhausting emotionally. And I loved every minute of it.

The film is over two hours of crazy, out-of-this-world action-adventure moments but carefully interwoven into a poignant drama about family (mothers and daughter; husbands and wives, mothers and fathers) and, ultimately, the meaning of life. It is a story about the multiverse, the number of alternate realities that are present and happening simultaneously with ours, and how one character, Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) must learn to access every possible iteration of her to save the world – every world in every universe, in fact – and save her daughter.

Directors and screenwriters Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (credited as Daniels, one moniker for both) approach this material with a madcap sense of humor. They are not afraid to get dark (the violence and gore can get pretty intense), not afraid to get vulgar (there are dildos and buttplug jokes that are actually funny), not afraid to get meta (in all the variations of Evelyn’s character, there is quite a number that reference her career), not afraid to get weird, and definitely not afraid to get personal.

The story is already a lot to deal with: an ordinary housewife, while trying to pay her taxes, discovers that in an alternate reality, she discovered the multiverse and found a way to “verse jump.” Verse jumping is accessing the memories and skills and talents of another version of yourself in another universe and little, ordinary housewife, Evelyn must now find a way to learn how to verse jump so she can save the universe from a destructive being called Jobu Topaki.

Mixed in with this dense science fiction adventure is a story about a woman in strained relationships with her husband (played by Ke Huy Quan) and daughter (an excellent Stephanie Hsu) and father (James Hong). The film manages to bounce back and forth effortlessly from adventure to family drama while pondering upon the meaning of life.

If that wasn’t enough, Daniels manages to imbue the film with exquisite filmmaking. There are split screens, subtitles that shift and change with the story, and clever cinematography and editing. As Evelyn moves between realities, the tone and style of filmmaking change as well. There are homages to Wong Kar Wai’s ‘In the Mood for Love’ in some realities, others are homages to Jackie Chan period kung fu films. The costume designs are out of this world in some moments. Nothing can be expected and everything will take you by surprise.

It’s chaos but there’s so much sense in all of it. It’s why I say ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ is exhausting. You are laughing out loud in one moment and then, in the next, you are marveling at the fight choreography right before it brings you to horror film levels of suspense and dread. The film itself takes on the infinite possibilities of its own story and Daniels is unafraid to go there and mine it for all its thrills, laughs, and tears.

The performances are all incredible, Quan makes a fantastic return in front of the camera (he became famous as a child actor in the 80s films ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’), while Stephanie Hsu shows off her incredible range. Jamie Lee Curtis is incredible and reliable, as always. But at the heart of this movie is Michelle Yeoh. The role is so demanding and she manages to be as mercurial as she is human. She infuses Evelyn with such an ordinariness, a woman who is completely unprepared for this wild journey she is about to enter but can quickly shift to a myriad of different characters. It would be a shame if this performance isn’t recognised at all by any award-giving bodies.

And at the heart of all this beautiful chaos, is a story that really digs deep into what it means to be alive and what it means to be happy in this very crazy world we live in. The craziness of this movie is just an exaggerated reflection of the craziness of the real world of the audience watching it. This two hours and twenty-minutes film manages to encapsulate a lot of this younger generation’s fears and anxieties and triggers and manages to create a dialogue between Evelyn and her husband, daughter, and father that proposes a sort of rationale that can address the underlying nihilism and cynicism that is at the surface of this film.

By the end, I was in tears. I was emotionally spent as much as I was mentally overwhelmed and physically drained by the experience. The last time I felt like this was watching Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’ in a 3D IMAX cinema, though I don’t remember laughing as much. I’m definitely watching this film again.

    My Rating:

Taking the franchise into new territory on multiple levels from going years down memory lane to spectacular action and humor, Minions: The Rise of Gru tracks how the Minions met their ultimate boss during his younger self as an aspiring villain. Being cautious as a young villain aspirant trying to get in the infamous supervillain group called the Vicious 6, Gru is at first resistant towards the Minions when they first met but eventually won him over with their hard work and irresistible charm.  As a mini boss during their younger years, the Minions have fully supported all of Gru’s ideas and what he wants to become.

Setting the scene back in the 70s, the decade provided the filmmakers with a diamond-mine of music, fashion and pop-culture references to excavate. “I was about the same age that Gru is in our film when I grew up in the ’70s, so it’s very personal to me,” says director Kyle Balda. “The television, the music, the cars, the hairstyles, the bell bottoms—there was just a lot of flair to everything. And with the vibrant colors, the sparkles, disco—it was a visual decade, for sure, and very nostalgic to look back at this era for inspiration.”

    2503 FFP 00523

One aspect of 1970s pop culture provided an opportunity to elevate the action in The Rise of Gru to a level never seen in any Illumination film before. “Another major reference and inspiration was kung fu films of the ’70s,” Balda says. “We scoured a lot of the movies that I enjoyed as a kid. Some of the sequences that we have in this movie are a tribute to that genre and the great work that’s been done in the likes of Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master and Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer.”

Minions: The Rise of Gru features the voices of Steve Carell as Gru, Taraji P. Over four films, beginning with 2010’s Despicable Me, Illumination’s Minions have become international icons of mischief, mayhem and joy. Minions: The Rise of Gru is the fifth film in a franchise that continues to thrill and delight audiences in every country and on continent and, consequently, has become the biggest animated global franchise in history, earning more than $3.7 billion worldwide.

A Universal Pictures and Illumination animated feature film, Minions: The Rise of Gru opens in cinemas nationwide on June 29.
