  • Eli Roth Unveils ‘Thanksgiving’: A New Slasher Tradition Begins

The Making of a New Horror Staple: ‘Thanksgiving‘

Eli Roth, the maestro of macabre, takes a stab at turning a faux-trailer into a full-fledged slasher hit with Thanksgiving. Here’s how a holiday-themed murder spree went from a Grindhouse gag to a gruesome cinema centerpiece.

From Fake Trailer to Frightening Feature

Back in the halcyon days of 2006, Roth was roped into Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s cinematic escapade, ‘Grindhouse,’ with a task that set his sinister synapses firing. He was to concoct a bogus trailer that captured the essence of grindhouse gore. Little did he know, this would plant the seeds for a feature film years later.

    A Feast of Frights

Roth reminisces about the halcyon days of slasher flicks that fueled his and co-writer Jeff Rendell’s formative years. Every holiday from Christmas to New Year’s had its horror homage, yet Thanksgiving had oddly been spared—until Roth’s creative cravings said otherwise.

    Crafting Carnage

The trailer that once wowed ‘Grindhouse’ audiences was a mere montage of mayhem without a narrative. However, Roth’s resolve, fueled by fan fervor, didn’t wane. He and Rendell churned their creative cauldron, reverse-engineering a rich, riveting tale from the trailer’s visceral vignettes.

    Screenshot 2023 11 06 at 9.08.54 PM

    The Lore of ‘Thanksgiving‘

Roth spins a yarn about the mythical 1980 version of ‘Thanksgiving,’ so scandalous that it was allegedly obliterated from existence, save for that notorious trailer. The present project? A rebirth of that lost ‘classic,’ reimagined for today’s horror hounds.

    Persistence and Fan Power

A testament to the tenacity of terror enthusiasts, Roth attributes the rekindling of ‘Thanksgiving’s’ flame to online communities that yearned for the trailer’s concept to morph into a movie. And with breakthroughs in story development, Roth’s vision finally took shape.

    Unleashing ‘Thanksgiving‘

This November 22, a new slasher saga slashes through the silver screen. Starring Patrick Dempsey, ‘Thanksgiving’ promises to carve a permanent place in the pantheon of holiday horror.

    Thanksgiving poster

    About ‘Thanksgiving‘

In the town where Thanksgiving’s roots run deep, a Black Friday fiasco ignites a series of sinister slayings. A masked maniac turns Plymouth into his personal hunting ground, weaving a web of vengeance that hints at a more malevolent motive. Can the townsfolk halt this harvester of horror before they’re served up as the main course?

    Roll Call of Terror

Directed by Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell, this ghastly gathering stars Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, and a crew capable of bringing your darkest nightmares to life. Be ready to reserve your seat at the table for ‘Thanksgiving’—a holiday horror that’s bound to leave a mark.

So mark your calendars, and perhaps reconsider that second helping of pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving isn’t just a movie—it’s an experience, a tradition in the making. And remember, in the world of Eli Roth, gratitude is great, but survival? That’s everything. #ThanksgivingMovie

  • Legendary Jim Henson’s creature shop creates animatronics in “Five Nights at Freddy’s” starring Josh Hutcherson

From the global box-office hit “Hunger Games,” Josh Hutcherson stars in Five Nights at Freddy’s, a thrilling survival movie as he takes on the role of Mike, an unemployed security guard with a checkered past who has stepped up to become the guardian to his young sister.

Foxy Chica Freddy Fazbear and Bonnie in Five Nights at Freddys

From the horror game, the film now introduces the audience to a seemingly harmless set of animatronic stage performers in an abandoned amusement park that comes to life when darkness strikes.

With a lot on his plate, Mike accepts an overnight watchman gig at a shuttered Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, where the animatronic stage performers have a strange habit of moving about in the night.  When Mike was 12, his younger brother Garrett (Lucas Grant) was taken by an unknown man from a park while Mike and his parents were only yards away. Mike has been haunted by that event—and searching for his brother and his brother’s kidnapper—ever since. Even in his dreams. “Mike’s a guy with the weight of the world on his shoulders,” Hutcherson says. “He’s acting as this father figure, while at the same time dealing with his own deeply personal trauma.”

    Chika Five Nights at Freddys

Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the world’s premiere creature effects house, created the animatronic and puppet effects for the film. They are the iconic creators behind such cultural touchstones as Sesame Street, Dark Crystal, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Babe.

As for performing with the animatronic creations from the legendary Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, Hutcherson says the experience was nothing less than jaw-dropping. “Watching them come to life was incredible,” Hutcherson says. “They have this texture and quality that only Henson can do. As an actor you actually get something physical and real to interact with. My character is supposed to be haunted by these things, and now I have a creature in front of me that, in the right light, is terrifying.”

    5769 D030 00226 R

Although the film has plenty of fantastical moments, Hutcherson focused on the humanity inside the story. “Because the world of Five Nights is larger-than-life, we wanted to find a way to ground these characters,” Hutcherson says.

Game creator and film producer Scott Cawthon was wowed. “Josh Hutcherson brought such a grounded realness to his role,” Cawthon says. “When I watch him, I really believe that this is a guy just doing his best to take care of his little sister. He is immediately likeable and relatable, and you want him to be successful in what he is setting out to do.”

From Universal Pictures (Ph),  Five Nights at Freddy’s opens November 1 in cinemas nationwide.
