  • Oscar-worthy Stunt and Action, Shocking Twists, Beautiful Music: Check Out Positive Reactions From the World Premiere of “Argylle”

Critics who got to join the world premiere of Argylle in London are singing praises of the latest star-studded spy flick from director Matthew Vaughn… with one even joining the call for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize the stunt industry and include a Best Stunt award at the Oscars.

Critic Luis Fernando, who writes for Empire magazine, joined the calls for a Best Stunt award at the Oscars because of how impressed he was with the action of Argylle. “Just had a blast watching #Argylle” he posted on X. “1- It’s past time for stunts to have an #Oscars category! 2- If #Argylle had come out in 2023, it would dominate the Best Original Song nominations along with #Barbie. Banger after banger. #ElectricEnergy is THE BOMB!”

“#ArgylleMovie is a lot of fun & a bit of a throwback,” Screen Rant’s Joseph Deckelmeier posted on X. “It’s the perfect blend of action, comedy, music, and espionage. This cast [is] absolutely incredible & their energy come through the screen.  The action, twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat. Watch it on a big screen!”

Editor and podcaster Rachel Leishman loved everything about the movie, especially the music and Alfie the cat! “I love #Argylle so much,” she said. “A perfect return to form for Matthew Vaughn and a movie that really just speaks to the spy genre and elevates it to a new level. Truly had the best soundtrack too. It also proves cats are the best.”

Fan favorite comic book writer Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Kingsman series) also posted his reaction on X, but couldn’t say much as full reviews were under embargo at the time of his posting. “The movie is awesome,” he posted.

More outlets are expected to publish their reviews when embargo lifts January 31.

In Argylle, Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books – which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate – begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aidan (Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur. The cast includes Henry Cavill, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson, Ariana DeBose and Dua Lipa.

  • A Musical Revolution: Tina Fey’s Latest Masterpiece “Mean Girls”

In a stunning new adaptation, Tina Fey, the original mastermind behind the 2004 classic “Mean Girls“, breathes new life into the iconic high school comedy. This time, it’s a vibrant musical film that melds the essence of the original with the dynamism of Broadway, tailored for the social media era.

A Musical Twist: Reimagining a Cult Classic

Fey’s vision extends beyond mere nostalgia. “With all this great music, we are still able to live with our characters in a close-up, to have new jokes and new moments that will surprise people who love the original and also delight a whole new audience,” Fey reveals with enthusiasm.

Lorne Michaels: From Skepticism to Belief

Lorne Michaels, the producer of both the original film and the stage musical, expresses his initial reluctance. “I have what I think is a reasonable bias against anything being remade,” Michaels, who was initially hesitant about revisiting Mean Girls, explains. “But I saw that a different version of the story could have the same kind of impact.”

    High School: A Universal Experience

Michaels articulates why “Mean Girls” remains relatable: “It’s about high school,” he says. “It’s the time of life when you’re the most vulnerable and it’s probably the most common teenage experience. Those four years and everything that goes along with them are the thing that we all have in common.”

Director Samantha Jayne’s Vision: Empowerment and Relevance

Director Samantha Jayne emphasizes the enduring message of Mean Girls. ““Women need to support women instead of tearing each other down,” she says. “That message was great in 2004. And it will be great a hundred years from now. If we have created a version that connects that message to today’s audience and allows them to have fun, we’re doing what we set out to do.”

    Tina Fey: The Legacy Continues

“I want people to enjoy it,” Fey concludes. “I know people will love this cast. I hope they’ll love the songs and all the moments that make them say, oh, I didn’t expect that!”

This adaptation introduces Cady Heron (Angourie Rice), a new student entangled in the social hierarchy dominated by “The Plastics”, led by Regina George (Reneé Rapp). The plot thickens as Cady falls for Regina’s ex, sparking a high-stakes battle of wits and wills. With her outcast allies Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), Cady navigates the treacherous terrain of high school, learning vital lessons about identity and integrity.

  • The Beatles “Now and Then” is the Heart of the Soundtrack of “Argylle,” Matthew Vaughn’s Latest Action-packed, Star-studded Spy Movie

Music in the films of director Matthew Vaughn is as important and integral as plot, character and design. From the score to the soundtrack, every musical element serves the storytelling, narratively and emotionally. With Argylle, Vaughn was keen to craft a screen romance that fizzed with banter and chemistry. As Elly Conway and Aidan go on the run in the movie, they find themselves slowly drawn together, in spite of all the danger. “It is a love story deep down,” Vaughn says. “It’s a weird one, but it is one.”

And as their relationship deepens, one song in particular becomes increasingly important to them and their story. “We needed a love song that we would play three times, and the meaning would change each time,” Vaughn says. Vaughn tried multiple tracks, but in the end the song he went with is a little piece of music history all by itself. At the time Vaughn heard “Now and Then,” it was unreleased.

Giles Martin, son of Beatles producer George Martin, had approached Vaughn about using a Beatles track in the film. Vaughn, a devoted Beatlemaniac, had considered it, but there were obstacles that prevented it. “I laughed and told Giles, ‘A) we can’t afford it, B) we can’t afford it and C) we can’t afford it,’” Vaughn says. “And Giles said, ‘How about D)? There’s a new Beatles track that might just work.’”

Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell in Argylle
Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell in ‘Argylle’

“Now and Then” is one of multiple songs John Lennon recorded rough demos for back in 1978, but never completed. Years after his death in 1980, Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, handed Lennon’s former songwriting partner, Paul McCartney, a tape containing the songs. The tape was marked, “For Paul.” Of the four songs on it, one – “Grow Old with Me” – had already been released. Two of the songs – “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love” – were worked on by the surviving Beatles and were included on the landmark release of The Beatles: Anthology in 1995.

The last remaining unreleased song, “Now and Then,” was earmarked for the Beatles treatment too, but work on it had been abandoned. But then, Giles Martin and his production team – using the same state-of-the-art technology that Oscar®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson had used to turn the Get Back sessions into 2021’s The Beatles: Get Back – realized that there was a chance to remove tape hiss and the sound of electrical current from “Now and Then.” And with the involvement of surviving Beatles McCartney and Ringo Starr (and including backing provided by  George Harrison when the three started working on the track for possible inclusion in 1995’s Anthology), they could turn it into a fully-fledged band number, anchored by Lennon’s plaintive, emotional vocal.

When Martin played the finished number for Vaughn, the director was blown away. “We put it on the film as a test, and without having to change a single edit it fit everything,” Vaughn says. “It was as if Lennon had watched the movie and written the song for us. It’s got lyrics that encompass the central relationship.”

Vaughn knew that he had to have it for the movie, even going as far as to have the film’s composer, Lorne Balfe, incorporate its melody into his score. “It plays so well with an orchestra,” says Vaughn, who got to meet one of his heroes thanks to the song. “I was incredibly starstruck when I met Paul McCartney to talk about it,” Vaughn says. “And when we were mixing the film, I said, ‘drop out the orchestra and give me Lennon and McCartney,’ and I thought, ‘Wow, I am playing around with two of the greatest songwriters of all time.’ It is a real honor.”

  • MOVIE REVIEW: A Different Donny Pangilinan shines in ‘GG’

It’s a different Donny Pangilinan that I’m seeing in Prime Cruz’s ‘GG,’ a hodge-podge of a film that juggles a sports movie (with e-sports at the center of the narrative), a family drama, and a coming-of-age barkada film all rolled into one. I saw Pangilinan in ‘An Inconvenient Love’ back in 2022 and he was great when matched with Belle Mariano but didn’t seem entirely in the moment in his scenes without her. There were times when I felt he relied on cute than pushing forth with his character. But in ‘GG,’ Pangilinan seems to have shed off that idol-appeal, leans into the gritty, and presents a character that is difficult to like and makes him interesting enough for you to witness his transformation and character arc. It’s a committed performance and he keeps your interest despite a whole bunch of amazing supporting actors are threatening to steal the spotlight like Gold Aceron, Baron Geisler, and the-always-reliable Maricel Laxa.

In ‘GG’ (short for Good Game), Pangilinan plays Seth, a college student who is living with his grandmother and is heavily into playing games on his computer. He is part of a team called Tokwa’t Badboys and they play competitively in a multiplayer first-person shooter game called Requiem. When Seth’s grandmother passes away, Seth must now live with his very wealthy but estranged mother (Maricel Laxa) and her new family and transfer to a new, elite school.

    GG The Movie TBB 04

But as the film opens, Seth isn’t a nice person. While he’s really very good in Requiem, he is positioned by the film as not being a team player. He’s good enough to make the Tokwa’t Badboys win games on his own skill alone and he’s not afraid to let his team know it. He’s withdrawn and guarded to his mother and her new family and keeps his distance and he has no friends or relationships outside of his gaming group.

With mounting pressure from his mom’s family to do something with himself and to do well in school, and when a member of his gaming group leaves the team (due to Seth’s difficult personality), Seth must figure out his life before the arrival of a huge national Requiem competition that can make or break the team and solidify his choice to put the game above all else.

By all means, ‘GG’ is a sports movie. The action comes primarily from when the team is playing Requiem versus other opponents. There are sequences that director Prime Cruz gets right: the training montage, the bonding that creates a stronger team (especially this one where the biggest issue is their teamwork), and how the film raises the stakes and making the national competition a make-or-break event for these character’s lives.

GG The Movie Seth 01 1

What Cruz doesn’t quite accomplish is to fully let the audience into the game itself. Requiem, according to press interviews the cast and crew did period to the film gave, is an actual first-person shooter game that they developed: the rules, the map, the game play, etc. They were actually playing the game for the movie. As a new game (and for non-gamers like me), I would have loved to have given a layout of how the game works, how the team operates, rather than to leave it all via dialogue from the members and the commentators when they get into competition. Any good sports movie explains the game and manages to incorporate a technique or skill into the story, to give the audience something to look forward to during the game. In ‘GG,’ the game Requiem has a special maneuver, named also after the game, that can turn the tide to a losing team. You know it’s going to be a plot point for the end but it’s never actually shown in the first two acts of the film so it doesn’t have the same impact as it would in a normal sports movie.

    GG The Movie Seth 06

Also, the film’s first act is so focused on Seth that we don’t see the team’s dynamic established. The film starts and Seth is already acting arrogantly, and his team can’t stand him. Their history is suspect and it begs the question, how did this team form in the first place? The film also holds back the backstory of Seth and his mom, but this is executed better as Cruz manages to build on the family drama piece by piece so that he can throw in the dramatic stuff later on in a big reveal that actually kinda works.

Luckily, after the film’s premise is set, and as the film enters its second act, Seth learns the problem is him and he asks for forgiveness. It’s a scene that humanizes him and lays the groundwork for the barkada movie that is set to follow. All the questions I had during the first act is rendered pointless now and the film finds it heart. It’s a completely human moment that Pangilinan handles really well and is punctuated by Geisler, Aceron, and the rest of the cast that gets the film moving at the pace and rhythm it needed to be in.

While Pangilinan and Aceron do amazing jobs at making the sports movie part of the world enjoyable, it is Maricel Laxa who manages to take all her little moments, her quiet looks, her reactions to her son (both her son in the story and in real life, which I just discovered recently) as he struggles in school and in his new surroundings and gives the film its strongest heartfelt moments. ‘GG,’ with its gritty neon-laced visuals and its lack of any sort of romantic angle in its storytelling, or its confidence in telling this story without the use of its lead stars matinee appeal feels refreshing and different. With regards to how the film handles its sport-movie elements, I wish that the film made me more familiar with the game that I didn’t rely on the dialogue or commentary to understand what was happening during the third act competition, but I enjoyed the film and found a lot of pockets of truly human moments that made me attached to these characters and this world.

    stars 3 5

  • Queen Bees and Wannabes: ‘Mean Girls’ Hits PH Cinemas on February 7

High school is a world of its own, filled with cliques, drama, and unforgettable moments. On February 7, Philippine cinemas are set to welcome a new addition to the high school movie genre: ‘Mean Girls‘. Directed by the brilliant Tina Fey, this film is a modern twist on the classic teenage narrative, promising laughter, lessons, and a lot of drama.

    Who’s Who in ‘Mean Girls’

In the heart of this high-school saga is Cady Heron (played by Angourie Rice), a newcomer not just to North Shore High but to the entire concept of traditional schooling. Raised in South Africa, Cady’s foray into the bewildering world of high school brings a fresh perspective to the typical teenage experience.

Ruling the school are “The Plastics”, the A-list girl clique at North Shore, led by the formidable Regina George (Reneé Rapp). Regina, along with her loyal followers Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika), navigates the school corridors with an iron fist in a velvet glove.

However, the plot thickens when Cady falls for Regina’s ex-boyfriend, Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney). This misstep puts her squarely in Regina’s sights, sparking a series of events that are as hilarious as they are cunning.
