Jeremy Allen White Chases the Truth in Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning”

Jeremy Allen White stars as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz in Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, arriving in Philippine cinemas October 7.

When the unprecedented rise of social media began creating serious problems across the socio-political landscape, Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz went looking for answers.

What he uncovered, together with the invaluable evidence presented by whistleblower Frances Haugen, proved explosive. Their work became known as The Facebook Files, an investigation that helped expose troubling revelations about Facebook and ultimately laid the groundwork for director Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming film, The Social Reckoning.

Aaron Sorkin Found His Jeff Horwitz in Jeremy Allen White

Sorkin sought out Jeremy Allen White following the actor’s award-winning performance in the acclaimed series The Bear.

Our fantastic casting director Francine Maisler, who has cast pretty much everything I’ve done, mentioned Jeremy in our first conversation and I thought we’ll never be able to get him. But I loved his performances in The Bear and as Springsteen and as soon as we met, we hit it off right away. He has all the skills, and all the intelligence, stoicism, and sense of humor to really get this character, Sorkin shares.

White was fresh from his Golden Globe-nominated portrayal of Bruce Springsteen in Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere when the opportunity arrived.

Playing Jeff Horwitz, however, called for a very different approach.

Rather than simply imitating the real-life journalist, White worked from the character Sorkin had created on the page.

In the worlds that Sorkin creates, the characters take on a new life all their own,” White explains. “He likes the actors to play the character on the page, so the real Jeff and I never had contact.

For White, that creative distance became an exciting part of understanding the role.

For me, it was exciting to try to understand Jeff in this different way. I saw him as someone trying his best to remain curious and questioning even as the pressure on him from all sides gets overwhelming.

Finding the Rhythm in Sorkin’s Signature Dialogue

White also had plenty to work with thanks to Sorkin’s famously fast, intelligent dialogue.

His dialogue gives you beautiful rhythms while also being full of ideas,” White describes. “Things move fast, but Aaron also knows how to really let scenes breathe.

That balance helps shape Jeff as he pursues a story with increasingly serious consequences, all while navigating the enormous responsibility attached to the information being placed in his hands.

Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison Build the Film’s Crucial Partnership

A major part of White’s role involved working opposite Mikey Madison, who portrays former Facebook employee and whistleblower Frances Haugen.

Their rapport is crucial to the story, especially as the relationship between journalist and source changes throughout the investigation.

I’ve long been a fan of Mikey’s,” White says, “and I found her wonderfully present, grounded, and intriguing as Frances, which made the intense pressure Jeff feels to do right by her even higher.

White paid close attention to how Jeff and Frances gradually begin to understand each other.

Jeff is at first frustrated by Frances, but he becomes increasingly protective of her,” White observes. “She starts out wary of Jeff, uncertain of what she wants out of this. She still has a lot of love for Facebook, for all that Zuckerberg has built and all that it means to people, and she’s very proud of her work at the company.

That emotional conflict makes Frances’ decision even more consequential.

Jeff tries to respect that, but he wants the truth to come out, and I don’t think he fully realizes how big a sacrifice it is for her until she has already made it.

A Story With Enormous Stakes

With White as Horwitz and Madison as Haugen, The Social Reckoning turns one of the most consequential technology investigations of recent years into a gripping story about journalism, responsibility, power, and the cost of exposing the truth.

Directed by Aaron Sorkin, the film brings audiences inside an investigation that forced the world to confront difficult questions about Facebook, social media, and the companies shaping modern public life.

The Social Reckoning arrives in Philippine cinemas on October 7. Distributed locally by Columbia Pictures PH.
