Miss Universe PH 2024 and PLDT Home Ambassador Chelsea Manalo bares all in Metro.Style cover

Miss Universe Philippines 2024 and PLDT Home Ambassador Chelsea Manalo talks about staying connected with her loved ones and being her best self in Metro.Style’s latest digital cover story.

1 Metro cover ft. PLDT Home Ambassador Chelsea Manalo by Dookie Ducay

Chelsea impressed the whole nation with her performance in Miss Universe Philippines’ swimwear and eveningwear segments. But it was her Q&A about overcoming restrictive beauty standards that captured the hearts of Filipinos and ultimately secured her the win.

Speaking to Metro.Style, Chelsea candidly talks about being away from her family in Bulacan, especially now that her Miss Universe journey is running at full speed. A lesson that she learned from her Miss Universe Philippines stint is the importance of maintaining connections with loved ones.

“(I always) value the time with the people who are really close to my heart,” she tells Metro.Style. When away from home, Chelsea makes sure to keep in touch with loved ones via landline, mobile, or the internet with reliable connection powered by PLDT Home. The new PLDT Home Fiber Unli All Plan 1399 with speeds of up to 100 Mbps and unlimited landline and mobile calls covering 5 Smart/TNT numbers in the family allows her to go all out with stories and updates for her loved ones – providing her no limits as she inches closer to her dream.

During her Q&A at Miss Universe Philippines 2024 most especially, Chelsea mentioned her mom to be instrumental in building her self-confidence – with constant reminders to believe in herself. Being the first Filipina of African descent to represent the Philippines, Chelsea not only aims to bring representation and diversity to the international pageant, but also to inspire women as her mom did.

Chelsea shows that staying connected with people who lift you up will bring out your best self. It’s also proof that your best self starts at home – with family and friends who have always been there since the beginning. Now, it’s her turn to use this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to empower women not just in the Philippines but from around the world.

  • Zachary Levi Unleashes His Imagination in “Harold and the Purple Crayon”

Zachary Levi Unleashes His Imagination in “Harold and the Purple Crayon”

The enduring family classic Harold and the Purple Crayon has a playful new twist in the film adaptation, where Harold is no longer a toddler, but grows up and travels to the real world. Playing the titular character is Zachary Levi, who’s no stranger to showing off his comedic chops with roles like Billy Batson in Shazam! “Zac embodies everything that Harold stands for: whimsy, childlike wonder, a kind of joyful optimism,” says executive producer Jeremy Stein. “I really, truly look at Zac and think of Tom Hanks in Big. He sells Harold’s journey with such magnificent maturity and sympathy.”

Levi is excited about Harold’s new journey beyond his fantastical world, and the deeper meaning behind all the laughter. “When I saw the script, I loved the idea of Harold getting out of his comfort zone, going into the real world, and embarking on an adventure with innocence and wide-eyed naivete,” Levi says. “That quest for answers is a driving force for him.”

Tanya Reynolds, Levi’s co-star who plays Harold’s friend Porcupine, feels that there’s a lot of Harold’s qualities in Levi. “Harold is filled with joy and thrilled to be alive,” she says. “Zac has that same lovely, playful, and wholesome energy.”

Levi shares that his friends have been excited to see him don the iconic Harold onesie when they found out about his role in the film. “When I tell my friends I’m working on Harold and the Purple Crayon, they try to figure out who I’m playing,” says Levi. “When I tell them Harold, they just laugh. I think they’re hoping to see me running around in Harold’s onesie.” He grins. “They may or may not get to see a little of that.”

Let your imagination go wild as Harold and the Purple Crayon opens in PH cinemas on August 21.

About Harold and the Purple Crayon

Inside of his book, adventurous Harold (Zachary Levi) can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life – and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends’ creativity to save both the real world and his own. Harold and the Purple Crayon is the first film adaptation of the beloved children’s classic that has captivated young readers for decades.

  • Griff, Arthur Miguel, Stell, and Dilaw headline Warner Music Philippines’ ‘We Play Here’ 2024

Griff, Arthur Miguel, Stell, and Dilaw headline Warner Music Philippines’ ‘We Play Here’ 2024

Warner Music Philippines’ We Play Here is back, this time with a new set of amazing artists and exciting activities that fans and music enthusiasts can’t miss!

    We Play Here poster

    A Curated Music Celebration

We Play Here is a series of unique music experiences designed to bring local and international Warner Music Group artists front and center. The We Play Here ecosystem features live performances, fan engagements, and exciting partnerships – ultimately bringing together Filipinos through music.

Coming from the success of last year’s event, this year’s We Play Here is bigger and better than ever. To bring their artists’ exciting performances to a wider audience, an expanded series of events will be hosted in different schools running from this year into next.

    Local and International Headliners

Dilaw makes a comeback at the We Play Here stage, much to the delight of their fans. The Filipino band is well known for their single “Uhaw (Tayong Lahat),” which went viral in 2023. They have over three million monthly listeners on Spotify, and have recently released a new track titled “Nilalang.”

Stell, the main vocalist of SB19, will also be giving a dance-inducing performance. After making his solo debut, Stell released an EP called “Room,” which features songs that fans can expect to hear during We Play Here. Another headliner not to miss is pop artist Arthur Miguel, who continues to shine in the local music industry with hits like “Lihim” and “Ang Wakas.”

Marking her first performance in the Philippines, this year’s We Play Here international headliner is British singer-songwriter Griff. Fans will be treated to electrifying songs from her debut album “vertigo,” which was released earlier this year. Despite the upbeat nature of Griff’s songs, a deeper examination reveals themes of introspection. One good example of this is “Tears For Fun,” which shows the complexity of knowing something isn’t good for you, but not being able to resist. On the other hand, “Anything” talks about a relationship where you would do anything for your significant other. Overall, the album offers a relatable look at relationships and love.

Griff has hit many milestones throughout her career, from opening for Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour in 2023 for a few European dates including Portugal, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands, to opening for Taylor Swift’s Era’s Tour in London and being a supporting act for Sabrina Carpenter’s US tour later this year.

Performing alongside these headliners are up and coming artists Kahel, Letters from June, Sugarcane, Paul Pablo, and PLAYERTWO.

Fans will get to experience special interactive booths at the event, such as Arthur Miguel’s “What if?” and “AM Hugots” wall, Dilaw’s “Nilalang” Portraits, and Sugarcane’s “Pagbigyan” Tarot Readings.

Other installments include Charli xcx’s BRAT photobooth, Griff’s Gachapon Machine, and the  “Sikat Sa Pinas” Music & Lyrics booth. The famous WishBus will also be parked in front of the venue, with its final schedule to be announced by Wish FM 107.5.

Presented by Warner Music Philippines in partnership with KDR Music House and UP Adcore, We Play Here will kick off on August 23, at the University of the Philippines College of Science Amphitheater. Early Bird tickets are sold out, but fans can still buy regular tickets (P750 each) here.

Stay updated on the different We Play Here promos and and announcements by following their Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts.

At the time she didn’t know him, but she wanted to see him do something unlike anything he had ever done before, and thought he would be a perfect match for Slater. His naturally good-natured demeanor would lure the audience – and Frida (played by Naomi Ackie) – onto the film’s mysterious island.

In the psychological thriller “Blink Twice,” when tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks immediately fly. He then invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. But as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. She’ll have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out of this party alive.

When the script got into Tatum’s hands he found it both “exciting” and “terrifying.” Slater offered up a new challenge for him in that he would have to inhabit a person who was nothing like him. “Almost every dude I’ve ever played I’ve had some sort of connection to them,” he says. “There’s nothing really to love about Slater. There just isn’t, he’s a full psychopath.”

But Tatum was also intrigued by the possibility of doing something daring, and in Kravitz he found an eager collaborator in challenging himself. “We’ve talked about lots of different versions of Slater,” he says. “The one thing that we both agreed upon is that we didn’t want to do the, the very stereotypical movie moment in a thriller where you reveal the bad guy.”

Finding her Frida was a “whole other journey” for Kravitz. “It’s a hard part,” Kravitz says. “She’s many things at once. You kind of never really get a real handle on who she is. How manipulative is she? How unaware? Is she the villain? Is she the victim? There’s so many different elements to that character.” Casting director Carmen Cuba offered up an option: Naomi Ackie, star of films like “Lady Macbeth” and “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Kravitz was not as familiar with Ackie’s work, but once she watched her projects like “Master of None” and “The End of the F***ing World” she was blown away. “I was like, ‘What a beast!’” Kravitz says. “And also her face is like so cinematic.”

Ackie remembers that what was supposed to be an initial chat with Kravitz turned into a two-hour conversation around the ideas of the film. “There was a lot that conversation brought up for me around the idea of the pursuit of power, about sexual assault, but also about Frida’s want for something more,” Ackie says. “Her relationship with the symbol of power that is Slater, how that affects her and that gives her blind spots to certain things. There’s many different things going on at the same time about how people are interacting with each other when it comes to these ideas of status and money, and they’re all abusing it in one way or another. We talked about Frida as quite an interesting, imperfect character, and how that made her a really interesting victim.”

In Tatum, Ackie found a supportive partner to play off. “I think there was an awareness for both of us that we were tapping into some really hard sht,” Ackie says. “His character as this awful guy who does really f**ing awful things, and my character as someone who is suffering from those awful things. Those aren’t easy, so we had to balance it with silliness and goofiness and making sure that everyone felt safe.”

Of Ackie, Tatum says she’s “probably one of the more talented people I’ve worked with.” He adds: “You walk into a scene and you’re like, man, this is kind of a hard scene. And she’ll just walk right through it. Like, not a problem at all.”

Meet Fujino and Kyomoto, the unlikely artist pair in Tatsuki Fujimoto’s emotional anime film “Look Back”

Look Back found the voices for the main characters, Fujino and Kyomoto, in Plan 75’s Yuumi Kawai and Mizuki Yoshida from Alice in Borderland, respectively. Look Back is the anime film adaptation of a one shot manga from Tatsuki Fujimoto, creator of Chainsaw Man. The film is helmed by Kitoyaka Oshiyama, with animation coming from Studio Durian.

Look Back tells the tale of two girls who couldn’t be more different, as Fujino is confident and Kyomoto is a shut-in who doesn’t leave the house. Their mutual love for drawing manga brings them together in a story of growing up and moving forward.

    Fujino

Yuumi Kawai lends her voice to the confident artist Fujino, who worked hard to embody her character. “Look Back” is a manga that touched the hearts of many people. This time, Director Oshiyama and the rest of the production team created an animation, and I added breath and voice to the story in an attempt to add new color to the time that Fujino and Kyomoto lived. This was the first time I had the opportunity to participate in the world of anime, and I did my best to convey the earnest voice that goes along with Fujino’s body, which moves wonderfully in the drawings,” she says.

    Kyomoto

Playing the role of the shy Kyomoto is Mizuki Yoshida, who recalls reading the manga for the first time, saying, “When I first read Look Back, I was shocked by the realistic world that Tatsuki Fujimoto had drawn, and I was really curious to see how this work would be turned into a movie. I was looking forward to it.”

Yoshida was ecstatic to be part of the world creator Fujimoto has built. “When I auditioned for the role of Kyomoto and saw the video for the first time, I was so moved that even though it was an unfinished picture, I said, ‘Wow! That world is alive!’ and I burst into tears during the recording, even more so when I saw the footage of Fujino and Kyomoto. I fell in love with the book. It was my first time working as a voice actor, but I put my heart and soul into my role,” she says.
