Twin exhibits at ARTablado gather newbies and established artists

Since its launch in 2020, ARTablado by Robinsons Land has served as a platform to showcase the ingenuity of Filipino artists—from solo or back-to-back duo shows to varied group shows. Whether you’re a newbie in the art world, a returning artist determined to tap into their creative side once again, or an established artist with a distinctive style, ARTablado welcomes all.

This time, its two venues at Robinsons Galleria and Robinsons Antipolo are hosting group shows featuring works by members of Art Show Philippines and seven artists with varying art styles, respectively.

“Lyrical Landscapes” at ARTablado in Robinsons Galleria invites viewers to take a closer look at a collection of landscapes that evoke a sense of wonder and tranquility.

“We chose the title because landscapes can evoke emotions and feelings the way lyrics in music can stir emotions,” said artist Frederick Epistola, founder and head curator of Art Show Philippines whose work will be on display until July 31. “The use of the word lyrical suggests that the landscapes go beyond mere visual representation, delving into the realm of emotional expression and poetic interpretation.”

A total of 16 new artists are part of the ongoing exhibit although this is not the first time for Art Show Philippines at ARTablado.

“As someone who dreams for my artworks to be seen, ARTablado has given me the opportunity not just to show my paintings but for me to meet other amazing artists and art lovers. They inspire me and teach me with their different techniques and knowledge in creating art pieces, which I think is the best part of it. ARTablado is strengthening the art community by gathering artists and letting us showcase our talents and art pieces,” said Francesca Miranda.

Fellow newbie Angeli Sarreal still can’t get over being part of the show. “It feels surreal. I used to be just one of the viewers at art exhibits. Now, with the chance given by ASP and ARTablado, I became a part of the exhibit itself,” she said.

PR ARTablado Lyrical Landscapes The Wind Rises by Riri

Rhiamie “Riri” Santos Ratunil said that joining the group show opened doors for her. “It has allowed me to meet like-minded individuals, enhance my skills, and improve my artistic direction. Most importantly, it has given me the chance to share my work with others, and overcome my hesitation and fear of showing vulnerability.”

The list of participating artists of “Lyrical Landscapes” include: Frederick Epistola, Mori Tiomico, Jay Vincent Gatdula, Juanito “Itto” Gatdula, Eri Dungo-Manaois, Elmar Badal, Ian Maigan, Jenn Angeles, Lei de Jesus, Gina Flores-Molina, Angeli Steele Sarreal, Lyn Dizon, Rosalina Sonata, Mae Jandayan, Pat Munar-Wigan, Sharla Ngayodan, Rodel “Deloi” Medel, Maria Francesca “Sca” Miranda, Tina GN, Evelyn Barbin, Riri Santos, Bets Beltran-Laguipo, Bliss Salvana, Raniel Ibay, Ma. Ongoing at ARTablado in Robinsons Antipolo is a smaller group show, just seven artists showcasing different styles and genres. “Thoughts from Different Walks” was designed to collectively showcase their individual works. The artists may have different styles but their goal is the same—to artistically reveal what words fail to say.

PR ARTablado Thoughts From Different Walks 4

Joel Reglos put the group together based on the artists’ work. “Basically, their unique styles caught my eye,” he said.

PR ARTablado Thoughts From Different Walks 2

He gave some suggestions for promising new artists. “They should have the tenacity when it comes to creating art. Set aside time to hone your skills. Also pay attention to what you are doing. That’s the key to reaching your goals as an artist,” Reglos said.

PR ARTablado Thoughts From Different Walks 5

He is grateful for ARTablado because it’s a platform for artists like him to reach a wider audience. “Exhibiting at ARTablado gave me the exposure needed to further my art career,” he added.

PR ARTablado Thoughts From Different Walks 6

“Thoughts from Different Walks” at ARTablado in Robinsons Antipolo is on view until July 31 and features the works of Reglos, Harold Gomez, Jade Lugtu, PJ Sison, Nicco Mindanao, Kambal Tuko and Buhay Mendoza.

  • Chapel of the Arcangels Now Open at Opus Mall

Chapel of the Arcangels Now Open at Opus Mall

Human life from its beginning until death is surrounded by angels’ watchful care and intercession. “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.”  This is given light and elaborated on in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, (CCC 336). Suffice it to say that the angels play an important role in salvation history and our life of faith.

    1

Among the angels, three are referred to as the Archangels who occupy the highest domains of this angelic hierarchy. Though they have tasks similar to those of the common angels, they have been given specific tasks and duties that suggest their importance. In general, the tasks of these Archangels include contemplation of God, communication of His Will to man in various ways, inspiration for human beings, and catalysts of divine grace for them. All three names of the Archangels end with the word “El”, which means “God”. “Mica-el” means “who is like God.” “Gabri-el” means “God is strong.” “Rapha-el” means “God heals.” God is inscribed in their names, in their nature. Their true nature exists for God and is oriented to God alone.

    2

Thus, Robinsons Land through the guidance of Fr. Ricky Montanez, former parish priest of San Roque Parish in Bagumbayan, Quezon City and Fr. Ron Roberto, Director of the Diocesan Ministry for Liturgical Affairs (DMLA), Diocese of Cubao has chosen to name the Opus chapel in honour of these heavenly messengers. This is a reminder that we too can and should be God’s messengers, like Gabriel. We are to be bringers of God’s consolation and concern to our wearied brothers and sisters in trying times, like Raphael. Finally, like Michael, we are called to emulate him in fighting for the good (and defending the truth) and in ensuring that God reigns in every heart of all believers.

    4JPG

The Chapel of the Archangels located at the 6th level of Opus is under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cubao and under the care of San Roque Parish, Bagumbayan Quezon City.  Father Ricky Montanez and Father Ron Roberto, in response to the duty of their respective offices have closely monitored the chapel’s development, ensuring everything from the placement of the tabernacle to the positioning of the statues of the saints, the archangels and the other important fixtures of the chapel. This Chapel has also been granted permission by his Most Reverend Honesto F. Ongtioco, D.D. Bishop of Cubao, to keep a tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament.

    5
    8

As it has a seating capacity of around 250-300 persons, there is an outside seating provision for other mass attendees in the garden area. Daily masses will be celebrated from Monday to Saturday at 12:15 PM and a vigil mass (anticipated mass) at 6:00 PM on Saturdays. There will be four (4) masses at 11 AM, 12:30 PM, 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Sundays. The Chapel of the Archangels was blessed by Bishop Honesto “Nes” Ongtioco himself last July 10, 2024.

  • HABI: The Philippine Textile Council Announces  Return of its Prestigious Piña and Abaca Weaving Competitions

HABI: The Philippine Textile Council Announces  Return of its Prestigious Piña and Abaca Weaving Competitions

HABI: The Philippine Textile Council invites piña and abaca weavers to showcase their skills in its two flagship competitions—the 7th Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition and the 3rd Eloisa Hizon-Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition.

Image 8 Last years competition jurors were comprised of distinguished heritage advocates fashion designers craftsmen and artisans. names provided in enclosed word doc

The competitions, which are part of HABI’s mission to preserve, promote, celebrate, and develop Philippine textiles and the country’s weaving culture, are among the highlights of the council’s annual Likhang Habi Fair which will be held from October 18 to 20, 2024 at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati.

Artisans from all over the Philippines are welcome to join.

Last year, Marilyn Almero of La Herminia Piña Weaving won two prizes at the 6th Lourdes Montinola Piña Competition for the excellence and innovation of her piece called “Peacock.” Aklan weavers Raquel Eliserio and Anna India Legazpi were first and second runner-up, respectively.

Image 9.jpg A scene from last years judging and deliberation of entries From left Fashion designer Barge Ramos Noli Hans Hidden and Erlie Gomez Manaloto

Winners of last year’s Eloisa Hizon-Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition were Anna India Legazpi, Agustin Tawi Sudaw of Bulacan, and Edgar Cornito, a T’Boli from  Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.

This is the 7th edition of the Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition, the Philippines’ premier piña weaving contest, named after the chair emeritus of the Far Eastern University and author who is a champion of indigenous textiles. She has written several books including “Piña,” a landmark book about the origins, the history, and the artistry of piña cloth.

Image 10 At last years judging and deliberation of entries From left HABI President Mia Villanueva and Heritage advocate and author Felice Prudente Sta. Maria

Artists and artisans who want to join the competition may work on their own or collaborate in creating extraordinary piña cloth.

Entries will be evaluated based on quality of making—excellence of the range of processes used including the knotting of the fiber, control over weaving tension, balance between the tensile strengths of piña and other fibers woven with the pineapple fiber, dyeing or other form of coloring, the physical relationship of the embellishments to the woven cloth and more—and quality of innovation and use of imagination.

The judges will be looking for freshness and excellence in the way they handle piña as a material. Blending with other natural fibers is allowed, as long as piña makes up more than 50% of the body of the cloth.

Participants are encouraged to explore new possibilities for couture and experiment with new procedures in the making of pineapple fiber cloth.

    Abacca 1

Submissions need to be at least two meters long. There is no regulation on the width.

Three winners will be chosen and ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd. But that’s not all. “There will be special awards for young weavers under 30 years old and for outstanding innovation,” said Adelaida Lim, President Emeritus of HABI.

Abaca weavers get their chance to shine in the Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition. Lim shared, “The abaca competition was initiated by the former fashion designer Gang Gomez, now Don Martin, OSB, and his siblings, to honor the memory of their mother who championed the wearing of native attires and use of local textiles.”

    Abacca 2

For the 3rd Eloisa Hizon-Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition, participants may also work on their own or collaborate with other artists in creating extraordinary abaca cloth.
Submissions must be at least three meters long and woven exclusively using abaca fiber. The width is up to the contestants.

Entries will be judged based on excellence in execution, skill and technique, including knotting and control of weaving tension, design and weaving qualities specific to the culture of the weaving community, aesthetics, dyeing or other forms of coloring, and quality of innovation, if any.

Three exceptional pieces will be chosen and awarded equal prizes.

Entries must be packed with care and submitted to HABI: The Philippine Textile Council, Inc. Office at No. 962 May Street, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Include a signed application form with the following details: title of work, name of weaver, age of weaver, Indigenous group, mentor, address, weaving experience, how long it took to make the piece, description of the process, and date. The deadline for submissions is on September 16, 2024.

Interested parties may find out more about the competition mechanics by checking the council’s website habiphilippinetextilecouncil.com,  and its social media pages on Facebook and Instagram (@HABIcouncil).

The winners of both competitions will get to exhibit and sell their work at the forthcoming  Likhang Habi Market Fair slated for October 18-20, 2024 at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City.

The winning works will remain the property of their makers after HABI: The Philippine Textile Council, Inc. fully documents them. HABI will also assist them in selling their creations.
