“The Chosen” TV Series Continues to Break New Ground in Bringing the Bible to Life

“We love our Filipino fans, as the Philippines is one of our most supportive countries in the world,” said Dallas Jenkins, creator, writer, and director of the hit series The Chosen, in August 2020.  Now in its fourth season, the Philippines ranks third globally in viewership outside the U.S., following Brazil and Mexico.   The show’s success in the Philippines makes sense, since Filipinos are not only devout Christians traditionally, celebrating the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ year after year, but are also incurable teleserye watchers.

    Jesus and his disciples

And The Chosen is an extraordinary teleserye.  It has captured the hearts of millions around the globe, not just for its compelling storytelling, but also for its innovative, crowd-funded production model.

From its inception, The Chosen has defied expectations, offering a fresh and humanizing portrayal of the life of Jesus Christ (played by Jonathan Roumie). “It has not only made the Bible come alive in new and powerful ways but has also changed the way faith-based media is funded and produced,” enthuses Teresa Tunay, CBCP/CINEMA.

What sets The Chosen apart from other biblical adaptations is its deeply human approach to the characters in the Gospels. Rather than portraying Jesus and His disciples as distant or larger-than-life figures, The Chosen focuses on their humanity, their struggles, and their relationships with one another. Creator Dallas Jenkins sought to depict these biblical figures as relatable, flawed people whose encounters with Jesus transformed their lives in profound and personal ways.

For example, Simon Peter (Shahar Isaac) isn’t just a faithful follower from the start, he is a struggling fisherman grappling with personal and financial hardships.  Mary Magdalene’s (Elizabeth Tabish) journey from darkness to redemption is portrayed with nuance and sensitivity, helping viewers connect with her on a deeply emotional level.  Even Jesus is portrayed in a way that emphasizes His relatability as a person who laughs, weeps, and shares meals with His friends.

This unique storytelling approach has resonated with viewers, many of whom have found themselves deeply moved by the series’ ability to make the ancient stories of the Bible feel relevant and real. It presents the Gospels not just as sacred texts but as living stories about real people, each with their own challenges and triumphs.

The crowd-funding success of The Chosen highlights the deep hunger people have for authentic, faith-based content that resonates with their beliefs and experiences. It’s a powerful example of how film-making can thrive outside the traditional system—and succeed when people rally behind a shared vision.

Additionally, the funding model has given the creators the freedom to stay true to their vision without compromising their values or message to suit studio demands. Fans not only helped fund the project but became its champions, spreading the word to their communities and encouraging others to support the show.

Since its launch, The Chosen has been translated into over 75 different languages that are available for certain seasons.  For viewers looking to watch Seasons 1, 2, and 3 in one particular language, there are currently 26 dubbed and 36 subtitled languages available.  Seasons 1-4 are available as a whole in 16 different subtitled languages.

The Chosen app, which allows anyone to watch the series for free, has made it accessible to audiences far beyond traditional Christian circles. This global reach speaks to the universal appeal of the show’s themes of hope, redemption, and the power of faith.

Viewers have reported that the show has reignited their passion for Scripture, helped them connect with God on a deeper level, and fostered greater understanding and empathy for the people in the Gospels. Churches and small groups have used the series as a tool for Bible studies and discussions, helping people explore their faith in new ways.

More than just a successful TV series, The Chosen is a cultural phenomenon that has redefined the way biblical stories can be told. Its innovative crowd-funded model and humanizing portrayal of Jesus and His followers have struck a chord with over 250 million viewers, making the Bible come alive for a new generation. Through its relatable characters and powerful storytelling, The Chosen has brought fresh energy to faith-based entertainment and has left an indelible mark on its audience.

  • “We’re Always Trying to Find Ways in Which Joker Expresses Himself,” Says Joaquin Phoenix in a New Featurette for “Joker: Folie À Deux”

“We’re Always Trying to Find Ways in Which Joker Expresses Himself,” Says Joaquin Phoenix in a New Featurette for “Joker: Folie À Deux”

In the new featurette “Joaquin’s Joker,” Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Joker in the first film, talks about the direction the sequel took. “Midway through the shoot of the first one, Todd [Phillips director] and I both thought what it would be like if we did another film,” shares Phoenix. “Music was a huge part of the first film and really did development of certain parts of the character. We’re always trying to find ways in which the character expresses himself in this film.”

In another featurette, director Todd Phillips looks back on his discussions with Phoenix about the sequel. “We went back to the things we liked [about the first film], and one of those things is a romance to Arthur,” says Phillips. “‘Folie à deux’ is an actual term, it’s this idea of a shared madness.”

Adds Lady Gaga, who plays Harley Quinn / Lee, “Some people refer to it as double insanity, a shared delusion. Just an expression of love. When we are in love, sometimes we will do insane things.”

And here’s something else to smile about – Joker is not just taking over cinemas but also the streets of the Philippines. In anticipation of the opening of “Joker: Folie à Deux” in theaters, this week until October 6, Joker is taking over Grab Car. When you book a Grab car, Joker will show up on the map, ready to take you where you want to go.

    OFFCIAL POSTER MAKISIG 24

Set on water, this mystery-filled play was adapted from Gabriel Garcia-Marquez’s “The Handsomest Drowned Man” by Teresa Lorena Jopson.

Jeff Hernandez composed the music, along with musical direction by Jesus Singh III (IAS ‘17).

Dudz Teraña, the Artistic Director of the FTG handled the overall direction and choreography. “I do not know another local group that successfully captured the Garcia Marquez magic-realist combination of otherworldly ambiance and ground human tragic-comedy,” wrote Arturo Hilado in the Philippine Daily Inquirer after he watched the late 2018 staging.

Premiering on October 2, 2024 at the FEU Center of the Arts Studio, the sound of mellow waves will welcome you to Isla Esteban where a big mystery threatens to disturb its calm shores.

This staging makes it so exciting,” remarked Teraña.

The play is accompanied by stirring musical compositions that move through this narrative tale brought to life by the skillful ensemble of actors and singers of the FTG.

There will be two sets of townspeople with an all-female and all-male principal cast with each character played by either current members of the FEU Theater Guild or its alumni:

  • Director Ryoo Seung-wan on Bringing a Fresh Edge to the Crime Genre with ‘I, The Executioner,’ Premiering in Cinemas This Week

Director Ryoo Seung-wan on Bringing a Fresh Edge to the Crime Genre with ‘I, The Executioner,’ Premiering in Cinemas This Week

Nicknamed the “Action Kid” by the Korean film industry, director Ryoo Seung-wan has transcended genre boundaries with his innovative approach and penetrating insight into society, rightfully earning his place as a leading figure in Korean genre cinema, with notable works including “Smugglers,” “Escape from Mogadishu,” “The Unjust” and “Veteran,” prequel to this year’s “I, the Executioner..”

I the Executioner prod still 1

Nine years after the box-office hit “Veteran,” Detective Seo Do-cheol (once again played by Hwang Jung-min) returns to the same world in the sequel “I, the Executioner” In the film, the detective and his Major Crimes Investigation Division continue to tirelessly track down criminals day and night, often at the expense of their personal lives. When the murder of a professor reveals links to past cases, suspicions of a serial killer arise, plunging the country into turmoil. As Major Crimes delves into the investigation, the killer taunts them by publicly releasing a teaser online, indicating the next victim, and intensifying the chaos. To tackle the escalating threat, the team brings in idealistic rookie officer Park Sun-woo (Jung Hae-in), leading to unexpected twists as they solve the case. In “I, the Executioner,” Ryoo vividly depicts the intricacies of a society in flux, where the parameters for criminal punishment and the proliferation of media content blur the lines of public judgment.

“Since the first film was so beloved, I spent a lot of time figuring out how to bring something new to the table,” says director Ryoo. “If the strength of the first film was its exhilaration, then with the sequel, I aimed to push forward with a more powerful force.”

One of the most notable aspects of this new film is the extreme placement of characters within the frame to go with the suspenseful directing. Cinematographer Choi Young-hwan revealed that he used a “split filter” which alters the depth of field to keep all characters in focus within the frame. He shared that “Ryoo wanted to capture both distant and close characters in the same shot, opting for a more classical shooting technique.” Additionally, the film employed an unconventional approach by using smartphone cameras and devices that YouTubers use in real life for scenes involving YouTubers, offering a fresh and bold perspective.

In addition to cinematography and action, the music in “I, the Executioner” also carries its own unique flavor. Music director Chang Ki-ha, who worked with Ryoo on “Smugglers,” joined the team to create a fresh atmosphere that audiences will enjoy. Chang Ki-ha mentioned that after reading the script, he found himself immediately immersed in composing for the film, saying, “It’s a work that combines both entertainment and timeliness. When a film successfully delivers on both fronts, you feel like you’ve watched a really good movie, and ‘I, the Executioner’ is exactly that kind of movie.”

I the Executioner prod still 2

Jung Hae-in, recognized globally for his role in the Netflix series “D.P.,” joins the cast in the sequel as a young police officer. To show the passion and spirit of a rookie detective, Jung underwent extensive action training, from basic fitness exercises to martial arts and parkour. “This is a piece that captures something penetrating this time and society,” says Jung about what made him join the project.

Only in cinemas starting September 25, “’I, the Executioner,” from CJ ENM, is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Discovery company. #ITheExecutioner

Farmers reaping a bountiful harvest in the rice fields, father and son enjoying an afternoon merienda of pandesal and coffee, two lovers sharing a moment with a heartfelt harana — in today’s fast-paced world, visual artist Bernard Vista focuses on capturing these simple moments that reflect on the withstanding spirit of the Filipino.

    unnamed 1

Bernard Vista’s “Countryside Chronicles,” showcases the artist’s affinity for genre painting against the backdrop of the rustic landscapes of rural Philippines. His latest series of works continue to capture simple expressions of Filipino daily life elevated with his skilled manipulation of oil pigment on canvas and stylized depictions of everyday people.

    Anihan

Vista was a scholar of the Saturday Group of Artists under the tutelage of National Artist Cesar Legaspi. Evoking the style and sensibilities of his contemporaries, Vista’s distinct rendering style pulls inspiration from the local cubist movement and modernist painting tradition. He reinterprets traditional imagery and techniques through his lens creating a practice that is uniquely his own.

    Biyaya Ng Dagat

A certain tenacity is palpable in the manner Bernard Vista paints the common townsperson. The strong silhouettes and solid lines of action in his works denote an unrelenting energy and vitality. This robust spirit is juxtaposed with the humility exhibited by his subjects as they bow their heads as if in reverence. With these unyielding and humble characters, Vista’s rural scenes are painted in bold folk colors that exude the sunny Filipino optimism that exists within the crux of his oeuvre.

    Kapet Tinapay

“Countryside Chronicles,” is all together Bernard Vista’s ode to the Filipino spirit as he chronicles the rich customs and traditions of the people in a painted tableau of everyday moments. Artists have used blue to convey a sense of calmness and peace, but also melancholy or spiritual yearning. However, blue can also be imbued with more complex and sometimes contradictory meanings depending on the context. In modern and contemporary art, blue is often associated with abstraction and emotional expression. Blue can signify both the profound and the intangible, serving as a versatile symbol of human emotion and existential depth.

Tied together by their shared palette yet distinct in their personal interpretations, Raeche, Ronna and Rufe redefine how they respond to and make a connection with the color in “Into the Blue,” on view until Sept. 30 at Robinsons Land ARTablado, Level 3 of Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas Center.

At the heart of the show lies the convergence of three distinctive approaches to painting, united by the singularity of blue.

PR ARTablado Presents Into the Blue Pond Life by Ronna

For Ronna, blue signifies peace and balance, an apt metaphor for her serene renderings of tranquil ponds and graceful koi fish. With her architectural background, Ronna brings precision and a multi-dimensional effect to her work, using acrylics to balance technical skill with emotional depth. “Blue is cool to the eyes, and evokes a soothing response,” Ronna explains, “It’s my favorite color and represents harmony, which is central to my artistic vision.”

Raeche, on the other hand, approaches blue as a symbol of endless possibilities. Her energetic, fluid strokes capture the movement of life, whether in scenes of children at play or dynamic figurative subjects. “When I paint, I immerse myself in a world of my own, where it’s just me, my canvas, and the way I express the beauty in my mind,” she shares. To her, blue clears the mind and represents the vast ocean of creativity, allowing her to experiment freely. “It’s a color that unveils infinite horizons, much like the ocean brimming with possibilities”.

In contrast, Rufe’s interpretation of blue brings a quiet stillness to the exhibition. His still-life compositions, dominated by shades of blue, offer a contemplative perspective on everyday objects. “I use blue not just to evoke tranquility but also to encourage viewers to see beyond the familiar,” Rufe says. “Through a deliberate restraint in color, I challenge the viewer to appreciate the subtle nuances that blue offers, from hope to introspection.” Rufe’s works serve as an invitation to slow down, to contemplate, and to find beauty in the simple and the quiet.

PR ARTablado Presents Into the Blue Travelers by Ronna

The color blue, often associated with tranquility and calm, serves as more than just a visual anchor in this exhibition. It symbolizes the artists’ shared pursuit of harmony amidst their varied approaches. “Into the Blue” becomes a dialogue between these creators, where blue acts as the common thread that binds their works, much like the color’s historical association with unity and cohesion.

Another element that binds these three artists is their faith in a platform such as Robinsons Land ARTablado for its commitment to supporting Filipino talent, its accessible location, and in helping share their artistic vision to a broader audience.

For Ronna, the gallery’s elegant presentation enhances the pieces, creating an immersive experience for viewers. “I’ve seen how ARTablado supports each exhibit enthusiastically, and the panels really enhance the artworks that are hung,” she says.

Raeche sees the exhibition as an opportunity to inspire future generations of artists. “We hope to inspire younger generations to dream and recognize the beauty in every piece of art,” she reflects, envisioning the impact the exhibit might have on casual visitors. “Exhibiting at ARTablado presents new opportunities for us, allowing mall-goers to openly appreciate our work.”

The artist adds how she hopes that visitors will not only enjoy the works but also find deeper meaning in them. “In this exhibit, we explore varied emotions tied to blue — from tranquility and serenity to expressive passion and playful energy,” she says. Rufe sums it up best: “Blue is a color that speaks to the soul, and we invite everyone to join us on this journey of discovery.”
