Batang Matatag: A Stronger Partnership for a Stronger Future

The Batang Matatag Campaign, a joint initiative by Erceflora Probiotics and Save the Children Philippines, has announced a significant expansion of its reach and a new partnership with the Manila Water Foundation.

Launched in 2022, the campaign addresses health challenges due to the lack of access to clean water and proper WASH and hygiene facilities. The Batang Matatag campaign invests in gut health and hygiene education for vulnerable communities, and the partnership with the Manila Water Foundation will help increase access to handwashing stations and water pumps in schools and communities across the country.

“Investing in our children’s gut health and hygiene is investing in our future. The Batang Matatag Campaign calls on all of us to play a part in building a healthier, stronger Philippines where every child has the chance to reach their full potential,” said Rica Mae Mateo from Erceflora Probiotics.Deeply concerned by the rise of childhood mortality due to diarrhea in the Philippines, Erceflora Probiotics and Save the Children Philippines launched the Batang Matatag Campaign to combat this preventable illness. Launched in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in 2022, the campaign reached over 19,477 individuals in communities and schools, training over 1,000 adolescents in essential life skills, educated 500 residents on child health and nutrition, and achieved a remarkable 100% improvement in health levels within the communities it served.

This year, Batang Matatag expanded its reach this year to the Rizal province in Luzon, completing four hygiene promotion sessions and WASH caravans, and 12 nutrition promotion sessions. The campaign provided 2,500 hygiene kits for students, as well as Brigada Eskwela cleaning kits for 126 schools in Rizal and BARMM.

Batang Matatag also initiated educating school clinicians and nurses in 68 public schools in Antipolo about the role of probiotics and effective diarrhea management among school children.

Through this campaign, the communities benefited from newly constructed water pumps and handwashing stations, ultimately benefiting 65,007 individuals in both provinces.

“We are incredibly proud of Batang Matatag’s impact in its first year, and thrilled to expand our reach to Luzon. With the support of our partners and communities, we are committed to continuing this vital work and ensuring that every Filipino child has the opportunity to grow up healthy and strong,” Mateo added.

Families are also empowered to support the campaign. With every purchase of Erceflora Probiotics, a portion of the sale will be donated to the #BatangMatatag Campaign to help build more WASH facilities and create more hygiene education programs for vulnerable communities and partner schools in the country.

  • Bread with He(Art): Pan de Manila ushers 2024 Holiday Season with Paper Bag Tradition

Bread with He(Art): Pan de Manila ushers 2024 Holiday Season with Paper Bag Tradition

Baking bread is an art form, with each bread unique in its own way. For the past 25 years, Pan de Manila has elevated the beloved pan de sal, crafting it into something worth looking forward to each morning. From the traditional pugon-style baking to today’s modern methods, Pan de Manila’s bread brings a touch of nostalgia and a taste of home. Even its signature paper bags tell a story—celebrating Filipino culture, tradition, and artistry.

Every holiday season, Pan de Manila’s limited-edition paper bags are highly anticipated, transforming into collectible treasures for fans of Filipino art.

Pan de Manila 2024 paper bag artist Krissie Phee 1

“We’re proud to say that our paper bags have become a canvas for our country’s most talented artists, whether they’re established or emerging ones,” says Terrence Ignacio from Marketing of Pan de Manila. “Each design serves as both a tribute to Filipino creativity and a vessel of warmth and joy, perfect for sharing freshly-baked, heartwarming pandesal with loved ones.”

Since 2008, Pan de Manila has collaborated with talented Filipino artists for its Christmas paper bag tradition, showcasing works by Mia de Lara, Christian Regis, Larry Memije, and Rina Albert-Llamas, each capturing the essence of Filipino culture. This year, 33-year-old artist Krissie Phee joins this special list, with her design featured on Pan de Manila’s 2024 holiday paper bags.

Krissie Phees vibrant artworks evoke warmth and bridge the memories of the past and present of our Filipino heritage 1

“I’m honored to be this year’s featured artist as it’s a special opportunity to share my perspective with so many Filipinos during this meaningful season,” Phee shares. “As I looked through past holiday bag designs, I admired how each artist captured Filipino traditions with authenticity. Inspired by their work, I wanted to honor that legacy while reflecting on how we celebrate today. My goal was to create something that bridges past and present, honoring our heritage while celebrating modern Filipino life.”

Pan de Manilas colorful paper bag art features Krissie Phee for this holiday season

Phee’s design uses vibrant colors to create an immediate feeling of warmth and invitation. “As people take a closer look, I want them to discover little details that might spark memories from their own lives,” she explains. “Rather than focusing on a specific celebration, my work captures a moment in time—our surroundings today—inviting people to build their own traditions around it.”

For Phee, this collaboration with Pan de Manila is especially meaningful. She fondly recalls childhood mornings of waking up early with her parents to buy freshly baked pandesal wrapped in simple brown paper.

Pan de Manilas colorful paper bag art features Krissie Phee for this holiday season 2

“The sky would be just beginning to lighten, and the soft warmth of the bag paired with the aroma of hot pandesal created a memory I hold dear to this day,” she reflects. “My hope is that this holiday season, my artwork will bring people that same sense of warmth and invite them to reflect on their own cherished memories.”

The 2024 Holiday Paper Bag will be available in November at all Pan de Manila outlets nationwide, and Phee’s artwork is sure to be another collector’s piece. Known for her vibrant style that balances contrast and plays with light and shadow, Phee’s use of sunset tones and dynamic hues brings a unique energy to each piece, adding a touch of the unexpected to keep viewers engaged.

So, as you bring home a bag of Pan de Manila’s pandesal on these crisp, cold mornings, take a moment to savor the warmth of the pandesal and enjoy the paper bag art that accompanies it. For Phee, she hopes her creation adds an extra touch of warmth to your heart and encourages you to reflect on the moments that make this time of year so special.

  • Health Experts Reveal: Meningococcal Serogroup B is the Most Prevalent Serogroup in the Philippines

Health Experts Reveal: Meningococcal Serogroup B is the Most Prevalent Serogroup in the Philippines

Health experts are raising concerns over meningococcal disease in the Philippines, with Serogroup B as the leading cause of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) and accounting for approximately 68% of cases over the recent years.1

Dr. Anna Ong Lim adn Dr. Lulu Bravo

Pediatric infectious disease specialists Dr. Lulu Bravo and Dr. Anna Ong-Lim emphasize that IMD poses a severe health risk, particularly if left untreated.[2] In the Philippines, one in every two (50%) of IMD case may result in death.[3] Young children are at the highest risk, and the disease can progress rapidly, often proving fatal within just 24 hours.3 Symptoms can escalate from nonspecific early signs to a critical state in a very short time frame.4

IMD is a life-threatening disease especially for young children3

IMD is caused by bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis commonly found in the nose and throat.[4] It spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes and can also be transmitted through salivary exchange, such as sharing utensils or drinking from the same container.5

    Dr. Anna Ong Lim

Dr. Anna Ong-Lim explains that “Symptoms of IMD typically include fever, headache, stiff neck, and nausea. As the infection progresses, individuals may develop a rash, sensitivity to light, and confusion.4 IMD manifests as either meningitis,[5] which causes inflammation around the brain and spinal cord, or meningococcal sepsis,6 where the bacteria enter the bloodstream, leading to fever and rash.4 Both conditions require immediate medical attention, as IMD is a rapidly progressing,4 life-threatening illness with a high mortality rate if untreated.”3

    GSK 20241121 111811

The Neisseria meningitidis[5] being the most common causes of disease.7 A key concern with meningococcal bacteria is that different types are more[6] than others, and these patterns can change over time.8  More international travel to areas where certain types are widespread[7] can bring these rarer types into new places.9,[9],[10]

Serogroup B is the leading cause of meningococcal disease in the Philippines[11]

    Dr. Lulu Bravo

“In the Philippines, all laboratory-confirmed cases of IMD, including those linked to Serogroup B,[12] are monitored through the Philippine Integrated Disease Surveillance Response (PIDSR) System”12 says Dr. Lulu Bravo. “Asymptomatic carriers—those who carry the bacteria without showing symptoms[13]— can spread the disease, underscoring the need for more data to strengthen prevention programs” warns Dr. Bravo. “By doing so, we can give more than half of young children who contract this disease a chance to avoid the life-altering effects of IMD,” she stresses.

    Meningococcal diseases can be prevented

IMD can progress rapidly, often within hours. “IMD requires immediate medical attention, as it can quickly become a life-threatening illness with a high mortality rate if left untreated,”3 Dr. Ong-Lim adds. “Prevention is our best line of defense against the devastating effects of meningococcal disease.”

    GSK 20241121 123011

Vaccines targeting different meningococcal serogroups play a vital role in prevention. Conjugate vaccines are available for multiple serogroups, such as A, C, W, and Y. Meanwhile, Serogroup B, due to its distinct bacterial structure, requires a separate vaccine.[14]

Health experts strongly urge parents to consult with their healthcare providers on how to best protect their children against invasive meningococcal disease. Understanding the risks, symptoms, and prevention options can be lifesaving. Ask your healthcare provider about how you can safeguard young children who are at higher risk against this serious and fast-acting disease.
