  • Treat yourself to a day of pampering at Shangri-La Plaza

The lockdowns have taught people to do many things. Some learned how to bake and take care of plants. Others learned to cut their own hair or fix their eyebrows. While these are a great addition to anyone’s skill set, they’re also moments of relaxation that used to be something one looked forward to as part of a regular self-care ritual. Now that Metro Manila is a step closer to the way it was before, it’s time to finally let the beauty pros do their magic. Shangri-La Plaza has some pampering picks to share for that well-deserved me-time.

Treat yourself to a day of pampering at Shangri-La Plaza

Get a proper haircut or color treatment.

The hair is a person’s crowning glory that makes an impactful difference on one’s look. For the past two years, people have neglected their hair, letting them grow wild, go frizzy, and turn gray. Say bye to bad hair days and have a hair refresh at Basement Salon, Manila’s premier hair and beauty salon where hair experts are known for their beautiful transformations that can redefine one’s style; David’s Salon, which offers world-class hair dressing and a wide range of beauty services; or Studio 546, a full-service salon that offers exciting color treatments.

Enjoy an afternoon of wellness with a rejuvenating spa.

Keep stress at bay by taking some time to relax and unwind at The Spa. An accredited member of the International Spa Association, it offers classic massages such as shiatsu, a Japanese-style acupressure massage that works on vital energy points to unblock and balance the body’s chi; Swedish involves flowing strokes combined with a special oil that soothes sore muscles and relieves body tension; and deep tissue, an invigorating massage technique using the elbows and forearms to work on deeper tissues that provide relief from muscle tightness.

The Spa also offers body care treatments like the Coffee Rub and Toning Bamboo Revival, facials such as its Signature Age Defense Treatment and Aroma Facial Massage, and foot services like Oriental Foot Therapy and Peppermint Foot Rub.

    Give nails some TLC.

Nails reflect one’s overall health, so it’s important to keep them healthy and strong to prevent bacteria that could lead to infections and fungal problems. Keep nails in tiptop shape at Nail Spa that’s known for its cozy atmosphere. Aside from the regular mani and pedi, they offer paraffin dips and even strengthening, whitening, and anti-fungal treatments to address specific nail issues. To take nail care up a notch, head to Nail Tropics and get their popular gel nails as well as their classic and eco-friendly, organic nail services.

    Achieve a glowing look.

The eyes, they said, are the windows to the soul. In beauty, they can make or break a makeup (or no makeup) look. The lashes and the brows, specifically, can help bring out one’s natural beauty, frame the face, and make one look more polished.

Give them some lift with the help of Strokes by Momoi Supe, a beauty studio that specializes in premium eyebrow services like Brow Sculpting which gives one semi-permanent textured brows that can last up to 12 months, and Kerabrow which helps manage unruly hair and change its direction of growth to get a better brow shape. • ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ to Screen Exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas

Downton Abbey: A New Era, the much-anticipated cinematic return of the global phenomenon reunites the beloved cast as they go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa.

The film is directed by Simon Curtis and written by Julian Fellowes.  The entire cast is returning for this new big-screen chapter, led by Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton, Penelope Wilton.  Joining them are new cast members Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye and Dominic West.

    DOWNTO1

Julian Fellowes talks about “Downton Abbey: A New Era” in the following Q&A:

Where are the Downton characters at the beginning of this new movie?

At the end of “Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture” it was clear that Mary was really taking over as the boss at Downton and that’s a theme we go with throughout this second film. One of the jobs of being in a hereditary business is to accept that it is hereditary and there comes a time when your usefulness is diminished and the moment has come to hand on to the next generation. Edith’s marriage to Bertie is going well and she has now given birth to a boy but in a rather modern sense, running Brancaster and motherhood is not quite enough for her. She needs an activity that draws on her brain and something outside the family unit.  Cora and Robert’s job in the first film was to host the King and Queen, which they did with good grace. They both have a more difficult emotional journey in this film. I wanted to give all the characters more to do this time round and I am rather pleased with the way it turned out.

Hugh Bonneville Michelle Dockery in DOWNTON ABBEY A NEW ERA

When you are writing, how conscious are you of the balance of drama and humour?

The sort of comedy that I like is real-life comedy and in our day to day lives we all know people who are funnier than others. Those people have the gift of coming up with phrases that are funny but they don’t remove you from what’s going on around you so in that sense you can return to the truth of the narrative situation without any difficulty. That is the level of comedy that sits well in an ongoing family saga like Downton and of course, for that, you need certain members of the cast to be talented with comedy lines. I was lucky with Maggie Smith, because I’d worked with her a few times before and the character I wrote that she played in “Gosford Park” was quite similar to Violet Grantham in “Downton.” Maggie has many gifts and one of them is that she can be very funny one minute, and two minutes later have you crying and she can shift gear without changing into someone else. She remains very true to the character.

Penelope Wilton Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey A New Era

What do you hope audiences will take away from “Downton Abbey: A New Era”?

I’m part of a dying breed who believes that one of the jobs of the entertainment industry is to entertain. I want people to watch Downton and enjoy it. I want them to go to this movie, have a nice time – laugh and cry, then go out and have a decent dinner and get back home and feel they’ve had a really good evening. That’s my goal and if people ask is it enough to just entertain, then the answer is yes. I also hope that every now and then we can make them think about the disparity of backgrounds in an equal society, or make them think of the difficulties of being homosexual in a period when it was still illegal. We touch on those sorts of subjects but that’s not the prime purpose of the film. The purpose of the film is to give the audience a really good evening out.

  • Tom Cruise Returns to the Skies in the Long-Awaited Sequel ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Thirty-six years after portraying Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun, Tom Cruise returns to the iconic role that catapulted him to global superstardom, with the long-awaited sequel, Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick (in Philippine cinemas May 25).

“I’d thought about a sequel to Top Gun for all these years,” says Cruise. “People had asked for a sequel for decades. Decades. And the thing I said to the studio from the beginning was: ‘If I’m ever going to entertain this, we’re shooting everything practically. I’m in that F/A-18, period. So, we’re going to have to develop camera rigs. There’s going to be wind tunnels and engineering. It’s going to take a long, long time for me to figure it out.’  For years, people had said, ‘Can’t you shoot [the movie] with CGI?’ And I always said, ‘No. That’s not the experience.’ I said, ‘I need to find the right story. And we’re going to need the right team. This movie is like trying to hit a bullet with a bullet. I’m not playing.’”

    tgm 10180r

On the original movie, although Cruise was filmed in the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat, his castmates weren’t so successful in their endeavors. “We had other actors up there, flying,” says legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “Tom was the only one we had usable flight footage for. We had tons of footage of the other actors in the air with their eyes rolling back in their heads. This time, thanks to Tom, all the actors on Top Gun: Maverick became accustomed to the fundamentals and mechanics of flight and G-forces, because of all the training they did months in advance. Unlike the first film, our actors are actually in the cockpits of the F/A-18s in flight, acting and speaking their lines of dialogue.”

Cruise says there is a “majesty and beauty” in flying an airplane. “It’s both using and defying nature,” he says. “And playing Maverick again, at a different stage of his life, has been an incredible experience for me. Maverick is still Maverick. He still wants to fly Mach 2 with his hair on fire. But you see the transition that Maverick undergoes. The pressure of him losing his best friend, the responsibility he feels about that and how he has carried that with him. This film is about family and it’s about friendship and it’s about sacrifice. It’s about redemption and the cost of mistakes.”

    tgm ff 013r

And that emotion hasn’t just been up on screen, but behind the scenes, on a journey that has taken the makers of Top Gun: Maverick both back in time and forward, into new frontiers in filmmaking. “What we have achieved with the aerial sequences is genuinely something that people will never have seen before,” says Cruise. “We’ve trained actors to be able to fly and perform in real F/A-18s. And, to do that, we took the greatest fighter pilots in the world [from the U.S. Navy] and we taught them about movies – the pilot and the actor had to work as a team. This is the sophistication of the aerial sequences. No one’s ever done this, ever.”

It’s not just pride that Cruise feels, though. Top Gun: Maverick isn’t just a movie – it’s a destination. A culmination of everything he has learned in his 40 years in this business (Cruise’s debut, Endless Love, was released on July 17, 1981), this is a story he’s been building towards. A love letter to aviation, for sure. But a love letter to movies too.

  • NCT Dream Headlines ‘Begin Again: KPOP Edition’ at The Smart Araneta Coliseum

Four of the biggest South Korean acts are slated to visit Manila for “Begin Again: KPOP Edition” taking place on May 29, 2022, 5 PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.  Fans are sure to have a blast with NCT DREAM, SHINee’s KEY, WEi, and ALICE performing their latest hit songs on the Philippine stage.

    Begin Again Official Poster

NCT DREAM will be headlining the show, coming on the heels of their widely successful album “Glitch Mode.” Released last March, NCT DREAM has recently wrapped promotions after selling an impressive 2 million albums. This makes them a double million-seller for two consecutive years—a feat only a handful of groups have achieved.

Seemingly a magnet for historic achievements, NCT DREAM is set to tick another one on its checklist. Back in 2020, the group is the last to hold a live concert in the Philippines before COVID-19 lockdown. Now, they’ll be one of the first international artists to perform live again after two years. Needless to say, NCT DREAM is making dreams come true with their return to the country.

Performing alongside the group is labelmate KEY, lead dancer, and lead rapper of SHINee. In 2018, KEY made his solo debut with the single “Forever Yours,” which he quickly followed up with a full studio album titled “Face.” The album peaked at number 5 on Korea’s Gaon Chart and snagged a top 10 entry on the US World Albums Chart.

September last year, KEY released his first mini-album “Bad Love,” which earned him another top entry on the Gaon Chart. The titular track also enjoyed commercial and critical success with its Music Core win and The Ringer naming it the Best KPOP Song of 2021.

WEi, a six-member boy group from OUI Entertainment, is also joining in the fun. Though only debuting 2 years ago, the group is no stranger to the limelight. Members DAE HYEON, DONG HAN, YONG HA, YO HAN, SEOK HWA, and JUN SEO have different charms, and as a fourth-generation youth icon, WEi is loved by domestic and international fans.

In March of this year, the group released their fourth mini-album “Love Pt.1: First Love” with “Too Bad” as the main title. The album sold more than 100,000 copies and placed at number five on Korea’s Gaon Chart.

Last but definitely not the least is ALICE, consisting of members EJ, Do-A, Chaejeong, Yeonjae, Yukyung, Sohee, and Karin. In 2018, the group was named the Best Rookie Group at the 24th Korean Entertainment Arts Awards. Fresh off the May 4 release of their latest single “Power of Love,” these fearsome femmes are ready to wow on the stage.

The 2-hour concert marks the first live KPOP show in the country since the COVID-19 lockdown. Don’t miss this historic event and come see talented artists on one stage. Pre-selling of tickets begins on May 17, 2022 (12NN) via https://www.cdmentertainment.ph.

Official ticket selling begins the next day, May 18, 2022 (10AM) via https://www.ticketnet.com.ph/ and all Ticketnet outlets nationwide.

  • Try These 6 Exciting Summer Activities from Metro Channel’s ‘Beached’

With the hottest season of the year officially on, you might be one of those who have already planned a beach getaway or outdoor trip to cool down and make up for the past two summers spent cooped up at home.

To add a little more excitement to your long-awaited vacation, we’ve rounded up some must-try activities based on Metro Channel’s travel show, “Beached,” that you can get inspiration from and, hopefully, be able to do with your friends or family.

    1. Go ziplining in Biaringan, Romblon

The Biaringan zipline is the only zipline in the Philippines that goes from one island to another. You’ll enjoy this zipline adventure, which has a total length of 1,350 meters to and fro, so it’s surely something to check off your bucket list in case you travel to Romblon. Not to mention the view is marvelous!

    2. Swim with whale sharks in Sorsogon

This activity is not for the faint-hearted but if you love the ocean and have always been fascinated with sea creatures, this would be a dream come true for you. This remarkable experience—which even made “Beached” co-host Rachel Peters cry—will also make you appreciate the beauty of marine life even more.

    3. Experience skydiving in San Vicente, Palawan

Sure, leaping off a plane thousands of feet above the ground sounds terrifying, but skydiving is definitely something that a lot of people cannot wait to check off their bucket list. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, you should surely take cue from Marc and Rachel who described their respective experiences as “so fun” and “absolutely spectacular.” Get ready to shrug off those nerves and sign up for this electrifying activity.

    4. Navigate Boracay’s marine life via an underwater scooter

Ever wanted to have a stroll underwater? Then this one is for you! Unlike helmet diving, where one needs to be cautious and stay in one place, underwater scooter or HydroBOB allows someone to go around more comfortably while submerged in the ocean. It might be harder to enjoy for those who are claustrophobic, but the thrilling experience of being up close with marine life will surely convince those who have doubts to try this one out.

    5. Try canyoneering in Badian, Cebu

If you are up for some challenging (but worth it!) outdoor adventure, you should definitely take on canyoneering, which involves travelling down creeks or streams within canyons. As seen on an episode of “Beached,” Marc and co-host Maggie Wilson embarked on this fun adventure by climbing, jumping, sliding down, and even swinging as they made their exit in Kawasan Falls—a pristine natural wonder that will surely exceed your expectations.

    6. Take a tour of the Piñones mangrove forest in Puerto Rico on eFoil

Local destinations are undoubtedly top-tier, but if you’re setting your sights on international travel this year and have saved up enough for new escapades, why not visit Puerto Rico? Marc and guest co-host Miss Earth Puerto Rico 2018 Krystal Xamairy explore the “Island of Enchantment” on one of the most recent episodes of “Beached.” Among the places they explored was the Piñones mangrove aboard the local invention, eFoil, a self-propelled hydrofoil surfboard that lifts someone off the water using a remote control. This water sport is truly one for the books!

Don’t miss the latest “Beached” episodes on Metro Channel, available on SKYcable channel 52 (SD) and channel 174 (HD), Cignal channel 69, and GSAT channel 70. Episode highlights of “Beached” are available on Metro.Style’s YouTube channel while full episodes can be seen on the Facebook page of Metro.Style.

  • ‘The Boss Baby: Family Business’ and ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ to Stream on HBO GO This May

Go on a new (mis)adventure with brothers Tim and Ted Templeton in The Boss Baby: Family Business and hold your breath in tightly wound suspense as the Abbotts battle the odds to survive in A Quiet Place Part II. Premiering on consecutive Saturdays, stream The Boss Baby: Family Business on May 21 and A Quiet Place Part II on May 28 on HBO GO.

    1

In The Boss Baby: Family Business, the sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s Oscar®-nominated blockbuster comedy, the Templeton brothers – Tim (James Marsden, HBO’s Westworld) and his Boss Baby little brother Ted (Alec Baldwin, Saturday Night Live) – have become adults and drifted away from each other. Tim is now a married stay-at-home dad, while Ted is a hedge fund CEO. But a new boss baby with a cutting-edge approach and a can-do attitude is about to bring them together again… and inspire a new family business.

Tim and his wife, Carol (Eva Longoria, Dora and the Lost City of Gold), the breadwinner of the family, live in the suburbs with their super-smart 7-year-old daughter Tabitha (Ariana Greenblatt, Avengers: Infinity War), and adorable new infant Tina (Amy Sedaris, BoJack Horseman). Tabitha, who’s at the top her class at the prestigious Acorn Center for Advanced Childhood, idolizes her Uncle Ted and wants to become like him, but Tim, still in touch with his overactive youthful imagination, worries that she is working too hard and missing out on a normal childhood.

    2

When baby Tina reveals that she is a top secret agent for Baby Corp. on a mission to uncover the dark secrets behind Tabitha’s school and its mysterious founder, Dr Erwin Armstrong (Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic World franchise), it will reunite the Templeton brothers in unexpected ways, lead them to re-evaluate the meaning of family and discover what truly matters.

Lisa Kudrow (Friends) and Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) reprise their roles as Ted and Tim’s parents, as does James McGrath as Tim’s befuddled alarm clock, Wizzie.

    3

The Boss Baby: Family Business is directed by returning filmmaker Tom McGrath (Madagascar series, Megamind) and is produced by Jeff Hermann, p.g.a. (Kung Fu Panda 3). Based on the books by Marla Frazee, the film’s screenplay is by Michael McCullers (Austin Powers series, Baby Mama, The Boss Baby), from a story by McGrath and McCullers. The music is by Academy Award® winner Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, The Boss Baby) and Steve Mazarro (The Boss Baby, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run).

A Quiet Place Part II continues the gripping family tale in this second chapter, heading to new places as events hurtle past the fragile sanctuary of the sand path the Abbotts (Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe) left, created to prevail in a reality where even a single footstep could be deadly – and into a world of infinite peril beyond. Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.

HBO GO A Quiet Place Part ll 3
L-r, Marcus (Noah Jupe), Regan (Millicent Simmonds), and Evelyn (Emily Blunt) brave the unknown in “A Quiet Place Part II.”

From the opening moments of the film, the family is on the run, beyond any semblance of security and searching for refuge in a town gone mad with fear. In a time when empathy and connection have nearly vanished from the world, the Abbotts strive not only to protect each other from the threat of sound but to find hope in the terrifying hush around them.

In 2018, John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place turned silence into the building blocks of fright and forged from the horror-thriller genre a modern fable of family love, communication and survival. With its mix of relentless tension and layered storytelling about a tightknit clan fending off an immensely destructive, sound-attuned alien force, the film became a startling hit and cultural phenomenon.

HBO GO A Quiet Place Part ll
L-r, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe and Emily Blunt star in Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place 2.”

Paramount Pictures presents in association with Michael Bay, a Platinum Dunes Production / Sunday Night Production of A Quiet Place Part II, directed, written and produced by John Krasinski and starring Golden Globe® and Screen Actors Guild® Award-winner Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns, Edge of Tomorrow), Cillian Murphy (Dunkirk, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises), Millicent Simmonds (Wonderstruck, A Quiet Place), Noah Jupe (HBO’s The Undoing, Honey Boy), Oscar® nominee Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, In America), and John Krasinski (The Hollars, The Office). The producers are Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Brad Fuller and John Krasinski. The executive producers are Allyson Seeger, JoAnn Perritano, and Aaron Janus.

  • Song Kang Forecasts Fashion Trends in This New Penshoppe Exclusive

Just like his character Lee Si Woo can forecast the weather, Song Kang knows what rains and what shines in the world of fashion.

    Cover Photo

Team Penshoppe’s Song Kang has captured spotlights and hearts as Lee Si Woo in his latest K- Drama hit Forecasting Love & Weather, playing the role of a weather forecasting genius who braves the storms of a seemingly complicated love story. Fans bid goodbye to the beloved character in the series finale which aired last April 3, but Penshoppe’s new ambassador isn’t done channeling Lee Si Woo just yet.

The actor stars in a new Penshoppe campaign for the brand’s newest In Color Collection – a line of classic and versatile fashion pieces that come in vibrant hues and accentuated with polychromatic details. In an exclusive interview with Penshoppe, Song Kang shares his forecast for the future of everyday fashion, and his predictions might not be too far off the mark.

What’s your present-day fashion like, and what are some of your favorite fashion trends?

“My present-day fashion is casual. I like to wear comfortable clothes for personal time outside of my schedule, so a lot of the items in my closet are quite casual. The trending items that [catch] my attention these days include long trousers and cropped jackets.

    PENSHOPPExSongKang 1

A Pop of Pastel: Song Kang looks effortlessly stylish in this Pullover Sweater with All The Cool Folks Front and Back Embroidery (P799) and Straight Fit Ripped Jeans (P1099) ensemble

As a fashion enthusiast yourself, you’ve seen trends come and go, but what do you think is a trend that’s here to stay?

“I think [it would be] athletic apparel. There are a lot of people who work out these days as part of their self-care routine. Functionality is the most important element of athletic wear, and compared to the past, there are a lot of clothes with various designs that can be worn in daily life. There may be changes in design and style, but since this is a trend that’s closely related to people’s lifestyles, I feel like the trend itself is here to stay.”

What fashion pieces do you think will always be in style?

“I think items such as jeans, shirts, hoodies, and sweatshirts will be in constant demand no matter how much time passes. Such basic items are clothes that we own as essentials over generations. They’re simple and go well with anything, which makes them versatile.”
