“Agrylle,” the newest creation from director Matthew Vaughn (known for hits like “Kingsman” and “Kick-Ass”), is set to take the cinema world by storm. Get ready to be introduced to a cast of characters that are as diverse and intriguing as they are dynamic. Whether it’s the enigmatic secret agent Argylle or the shy yet best-selling author Elly Conway, there’s someone for every movie lover in this razor-sharp, reality-bending thriller.
In “Agrylle,” Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World” franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books – which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate – begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aidan, a cat-allergic spy played by Oscar® winner Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.
Ahead of the film’s opening on January 31, get to know Elly, Aidan and the rest of the characters of “Agrylle.” Take it from John Cena, who plays one of the book characters in the film. “I don’t think audiences are only looking for bigger and brasher,” Cena says. “I think they also need purpose, narrative and characters to invest in, and ‘Argylle’ has this stuff in spades.”
Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard)
Imagine living a quiet life, only for it to be upended by your own creations. Bryce Dallas Howard plays Elly Conway, novelist by day, cat mom by night. She lives a quiet life with an unhealthy obsession with her written characters. Elly is a recluse who lives in a world of her own making, until an agent named Aidan approaches her on a train, informs her that she is the target of a nefarious spy organization known as The Division, and Elly is thrust into a dangerous, glamorous, global race against the clock to unlock a mystery trapped inside her own head and save her own life. “As a 40-year-old woman, it’s not every day you get a part like this sent your way,” says Howard. “It feels like a small miracle, so empowering and satisfying and fun. It is the best script I have ever read and the best part I have ever gotten to play.”
Aidan (Sam Rockwell)
In every way that Elly Conway’s imaginary secret agent, Argylle (played by Henry Cavill), is smooth and confident, real-life secret agent Aidan is a bit rough around the edges. “Elly and Aidan meet on a train, where he looks like an unlikely passenger to be holding a first-class ticket,” says Vaughn. “You wouldn’t immediately peg Sam Rockwell as a spy, and that’s precisely the essence of a spy. In films like ‘Kingsman’ or ‘James Bond,’ spies are typically impeccably dressed, but in our movie, Sam’s character deliberately goes against that norm. He is the kind of spy who is meant to blend in seamlessly by not standing out.”
Ritter (Bryan Cranston)
The leader of a sinister rogue spy organization known as The Division, Ritter is desperate to keep his secrets hidden. Devious and dangerous, Ritter wants to know just what it is that Elly Conway knows and how she knows it – even if she doesn’t. “I’ve been a huge fan of Cranston’s ever since I first saw him in ‘Seinfeld’ and ‘Malcolm in the Middle,’” says Vaughn. “Then ‘Breaking Bad’ came along, and I could not believe it was the same guy. Bryan is a rare talent who can master drama like no other and tackle comedy with the same finesse. There is no genre or character he could not handle.”
Ruth (Catherine O’Hara)
Elly Conway’s long-suffering mother and de facto book editor, Ruth is proud of her daughter’s success, but worries about Elly’s obsessive devotion to her fictional world. “Every twenty pages another anvil drops,” O’Hara says of the film’s script, written by Jason Fuchs. “It’s really exciting, and I couldn’t stop reading.”
Alfred Solomon (Samuel L. Jackson)
Alfred Solomon is the former deputy director of the CIA, now living in exile, shunned from the spy world. “Alfred is kind of the master behind the screen,” Jackson says.
Saba Al-Badr (Sofia Boutella)
In the real world of Elly’s and Aidan’s race around the globe to protect Elly from The Division, Saba Al-Badr is the mysterious “Keeper of Secrets,” who resides in a fortress-like palace.
Alfie (Chip, real-life cat of supermodel Claudia Vaughn [née Schiffer])
Alfie is Elly Conway’s cat and her closest friend. She never leaves home without him, so when Aidan drags Elly on a life-or-death race around the globe – with Elly’s future and the future of the world hanging in the balance – Alfie is also hanging on Elly’s back, in a feline-couture backpack with a domed viewing window. “I drew inspiration from my kids, who had me watch a Taylor Swift documentary featuring Taylor wearing a cat pack,” shares Vaughn. “I made a mental note to use it in the future.”
Argylle (Henry Cavill)
Handsome, charming, with a flattop haircut, Argylle is, as imagined by Elly Conway in her novels, a world-class spy who will stop at nothing to bring justice to those who deserve it. He is the epitome of espionage cool. “I felt Henry could give me all the classic spy stuff,” says Vaughn. “He can give me a wink; he can do all the things I want from a spy.” Agrees John Cena, who also plays a spy in the film, “Henry has everything you want from a leading man,” says Cena. “Poise, charisma, professionalism. The man is just a flat-out stud.”
Legrange (Dua Lipa)
Elegant, beguiling, lethal and Argylle’s nemesis, Legrange is an international terrorist, working for the highest bidder. “The role needed someone instantly recognizable and glamorous,” says Vaughn. “My kids introduced me to Dua Lipa through her music and then I saw her on a chat show… she looked glamorous and exactly like what we were looking for in the role.”
Wyatt (John Cena)
Serving as the self-described “muscle,” Wyatt is the best-friend and main accomplice to agent Argylle. “John reached out to me expressing his interest in any role that might be right for him in my films,” Vaughn shares. “You often hear that in Hollywood, but with John, it was genuine. I offered him a small part, just a two-week commitment, and he enthusiastically said yes.”
Keira (Ariana DeBose)
In Elly Conway’s imaginary world of the Argylle novels, Keira is a field tech who often teams up with agent Argylle and Wyatt – usually to bail them out of trouble. “It’s one of those pinch-me moments,” DeBose says of sharing the screen with the film’s all-star cast. “I’m honored to be even a small part of this universe.”
Opening in cinemas January 31, “Agrylle,” an Apple Original Films presentation, in association with MARV, a Cloudy production, is distributed by Universal Pictures. #ArgylleMoviePH

City of Dreams Manila rings in the Year of the Wood Dragon, considered as the luckiest sign in Chinese Zodiac. The integrated resort’s signature restaurants Crystal Dragon and Red Ginger showcase auspicious offerings to welcome the lunar year, making it a destination in this time of reunions and celebrations.
As the Year of the Wood Dragon comes once every 60 years, City of Dreams Manila is also set to hold special events observing the traditions of the occasion.
Crystal Dragon
Enjoy a prosperous meal at Crystal Dragon, City of Dreams Manila’s outlet specializing in Cantonese and regional Chinese specialties. From January 25 to February 12, the restaurant highlights its Lunar New Year specialties from lunch to dinner including the signature Lunar Year Prosperity Abalone Yu Sheng.
A quintessential Chinese New Year celebratory fare, Crystal Dragon’s version of the symbolic yu sheng salad consists of sliced abalone, colorful julienned papaya, pomelo, carrots, radish, onion leeks, chopped peanuts, and deep-fried flour crisps drizzled with oil and sweet plum dressing. The abalone symbolizes abundance, while the oil represents a wish for a smooth sailing year. The chopped peanuts and deep-fried flour crisps signify prosperity, and the sweet plum sauce denotes a sweet and harmonious family relationship. The green papaya carries the auspicious meaning of youthfulness, the radish for progression at a quick pace, the leeks for cleverness, and the pomelo and carrots for good luck.
Yu sheng is a uniquely Lunar New Year tradition that’s popular in Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia and Singapore where heritage Chinese restaurants introduced it in the 1960s.
Other culinary delights offered in an a la carte menu for lunch and dinner this season augur harmony and good fortune: Sea Treasures Broth with sea cucumber, crab meat and crispy dried scallop; Slow-braised Pork Knuckle with 10-head abalone, conpoy (dried scallop) and sea cucumber; Steamed Star Grouper with aromatic coriander and yellow chili paste; Slow-poached Yellow Skin Chicken (whole); Wok-fried Prawn in fragrant oat with pomelo fruit salad and roasted sesame dressing; and Wok-fried Fragrant Rice with Chinese liver sausage, lap cheong (Chinese sausage), and mushroom. For luck and togetherness, Crystal Dragon also offers Deep-fried Nian Gao (tikoy or sticky rice cake) with cheese.
A pineapple pastry caps the meal for guests dining on the eve of the occasion and on the day of Lunar New Year for good fortune.
Red Ginger
City of Dreams Manila’s Asian bar and bistro renders a Southeast Asian twist to yu sheng salad with its Prosperity Prawn and Pomelo Salad, featuring sustainable prawns, local pomelo, hydroponic-grown lettuce and Vietnamese Nước chấm dressing. As it is customary to eat fish for its symbolism of abundance during this occasion, the restaurant also offers Deep-fried Whole Tilapia with calamansi, ginger and steamed bok choy. Crispy Orange Chicken with toasted sesame seeds, and Red Ginger’s rendition of the ubiquitous Nian Gao consisting of custard-filled glutinous rice cake and fish-shaped tikoy are also highlighted.

Other festivities

Following their victories at the 81st Golden Globes and 29th Critics Choice Awards earlier this month, Netflix’s Beef, FX’s The Bear, and HBO’s Succession have scored three-peat wins with yet another remarkable sweep at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. Notably, several personalities also celebrated historic wins, with one individual joining the prestigious EGOT club.
Beef has a big night at the Emmys
The hit dramedy about a road rage incident gone out of control, led by Asian stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, won six of its 13 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actor (Yeun), and Outstanding Actress (Wong). Beef showrunner and creator Lee Sung Jin was also awarded Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing.
“You know, a lot of the suicidal ideation in this show was based on stuff that I and some of the folks up here have struggled with over the years,” said Lee in his acceptance speech. “So I’m really grateful and humbled by everyone who watched the show and reached out about their own personal struggles. It’s very life-affirming, so thank you.”
Beef also swept the Limited Series categories for the 81st Golden Globes and the 29th Critics Choice Awards, bagging Best Limited Series plus acting awards for Yeun, Wong, and Maria Bello.
Ali Wong makes history
Wong’s win for Beef served as a huge milestone for the Asian-American community. In winning her first Emmy, she also became the first Asian woman to win a lead acting award at the Emmys.
Wong’s big night didn’t just end with her achievement. She also got to spend time with the extravagant drag queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15, where Wong served as a guest judge for one episode. The show won the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program while RuPaul himself won Outstanding Host.
“This is my dream. My dream is coming true,” said the actress while posing for photos.
Succession goes out with a bang
HBO’s Succession, a saga about the prolific Roy family and their media empire, dominated the Emmys with 27 nominations, six of which it successfully took home as wins. For its fourth and final season, the show secured its third Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series plus awards for writing and directing. Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin took home their first Emmys for lead actress and lead actor respectively. Meanwhile, Matthew Macfadyen celebrated his back-to-back win as a supporting actor.
Aside from its awards, the show also set a record with three entries in a lead drama actor for Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong. Succession’s Emmy wins come at the heels of an equally successful run at the 81st Golden Globes and 29th Critics Choice Awards where it took home best drama series and major awards for Culkin, Snook, and Macfayden.
The Bear claims comedy
FX’s The Bear had another epic night, this time ranking a total of 10 wins including four previous wins at the Creative Arts Emmys. Aside from winning Outstanding Comedy Series, cast members Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach also bagged their first Emmys. The Bear also won best comedy series as well as acting awards for White and Edebiri, at the 81st Golden Globes and 29th Critics Choice Awards.
More historic wins at the Emmys
After winning an Emmy for his Disney+ special concert film Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, Elton John became the 19th person in the world to achieve EGOT status (winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). He slots in after legendary performers like Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Viola Davis.Meanwhile, Abbot Elementary’s Quinta Brunson also made history as the first Black woman to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy in over 40 years since Isabel Sanford (The Jeffersons) in 1981.

Two decades of bringing arts closer to Filipino people, and the Pasinaya: The CCP Open House Festival just keeps getting better and bolder in 2024.
For the first time, Pasinaya goes beyond the capital city and spreads its wings to Visayas and Mindanao. The multi-arts festival will be simultaneously happening at the CCP Complex and its partner museums, the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Arts in Iloilo City, and Tagum City, Davao del Norte on February 3 and 4, 2004.
Following the theme “Sulong,” the country’s largest multi-arts festival returns on a grander scale with more artistic and cultural offerings in its 20th years.
“After escaping the confines of the pandemic in last year’s Pasinaya: Piglas, the new partnership with ILOMOCA and Tagum City pushes the boundaries. The CCP will always find ways to provide spaces for our artists and cultural groups where they can showcase their talents and create new audiences who will participate in artmaking and appreciate the best that the Philippines has to offer,” said CCP artistic director Dennis N. Marasigan.
A wide variety of exciting activities await the public in Pasinaya 2024. Happening in various venues at the CCP Complex such as CCP Front Lawn, Liwasang Kalikasan, Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez and its surroundings, and parade ground of Vicente Sotto Street, and in partner museums and galleries, the festival boasts over a hundred shows, workshops, and other activities in music, theater, dance, visual arts, film, and literature to choose from.
With its experience-all-you-can, pay-what-you-can scheme, participants may go in and out of the different CCP venues to join 30-minute workshops in various art disciplines conducted by leading artists, resource persons, and teachers, or watch as many shows, screenings, and activities as they can.
Pasinaya kick starts on February 3, 7 am, with an opening salvo and special program, followed by the flash mob dance featuring the festival jingle, Sulong Pasinaya, which has become a tradition of the art festival through the years.
Festival components include Palihan where audiences can join the different workshops; and Palabas where they can watch unlimited shows, featuring more than 3,000 artists from different art fields. Festival programmers and art groups will meet in Palitan to do some business-to-business meetings.
Paseo Museo shuttles audiences to various partner galleries, museums, and art spaces around the metro with the hop-on, hop-off tour scheme. Pagtitipon, meanwhile, gathers the Kaisa sa Sining partners from different regions of the countries to participate in the annual art festival. Finally, Pamilihan features the sale of goods from all over the country.
Registration starts as early as 6:30 am at the Bukaneg side of the CCP Front Lawn and at Vicente Sotto Street.
In 2023, audience counts reached 37,888 – 12,055 participated in 43 Palihan workshops, 24,482 watched 101 Palabas shows (58 at the CCP Complex, and 43 in partner museums/galleries), and 1,236 enjoyed the Paseo Museo tours in 13 museums and galleries. Total donations amounted to Php 253,514.
With the partnership with ILOMOCA and Tagum City, CCP plans to exceed its target audience counts, collaborate with more artists, stagehands, technical crew, and other cultural workers from various places in the country, and create partnerships with more local government units.
“Breaking free from the common notion that CCP is just the building in 2023, we have continuously proved that we can be anywhere. This year, we are reaching farther and wider into different performing spaces, and into the regions. Year 2024 will be the year we, at the CCP, continue to move forward, despite the challenges that will come our way,” said CCP president Michelle Nikki Junia.
Established in 2005, Pasinaya was conceived as a jump start to the National Arts Month celebration; hence it is scheduled every first week of February. Originally, it was created as a preview for the CCP’s artistic programming for the year. But through the years, the festival has grown bigger and become a venue for art appreciation and education, networking, and collaborations.

In “Migration,” the Mallard family is led by dad Mack (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani), who is content to keep his family safe paddling around their New England pond forever, and mom Pam (Elizabeth Banks), who prefers to shake things up and show their kids—teen son Dax (Caspar Jennings) and duckling daughter Gwen (Tresi Gazal)—the whole wide world. When a migrating duck family alights on their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam seizes the opportunity and persuades Mack to embark on a family trip, via New York City, to tropical Jamaica.
Find out what some reviewers are saying about the movie!
Says Deadline, “It is the kind of animated entertainment that all ages will find something to like, and in terms of the creative talent involved it is a breath of fresh air in the genre.”
“Benjamin Renner’s new comedy ‘Migration’ offers a winning combination of a charming narrative and distinctive animation style,” says The Hollywood Reporter.
“It’s breezy and lighthearted but manages to hit a bullseye when it comes to the type of stories we need this season,” Collider shares.
Of the film’s animation, the Los Angeles Times says, “Where many animated productions sport a plastic sheen, ‘Migration’s’ textured look conveys a less-manufactured touch. There are lovely vistas taken in from the air. The hue palette is more muted than the usual candy-colored explosions. The light feels gentler with mellower shadows. We’re often in the magic hours of dusk or dawn. In the distance, the haze blurs to an almost watercolor effect.”
“Illumination soars to creative new heights with a hilarious CGI adventure that’s beautifully animated. Migration delivers a feast for the eyes that tickles your funny bone with wonderful character dynamics,” says MovieWeb.
“Migration,” from Universal Pictures International, is now showing nationwide. #MigrationMoviePh
