  • 5 Reasons Why You Don’t Want “The Kidnapping Day” to Fly Under Your Radar

Director Park Yu-young, Yoon Kye-sang, Park Sung-hoon, Yoo Na, and Kim Shin-rock gathered at a local press conference in Seoul to discuss their upcoming series The Kidnapping Day. The black comedy thriller will be available on Prime Video in the Philippines and more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. The 12-episode series premieres today on September 13 with new episodes every Wednesday and Thursday. Check out why you don’t want to miss out on the series below.

    1. It’s a Multi-Genre Adventure

    Untitled

The Kidnapping Day centers around clumsy kidnapper Kim Myeong-jun (Yoon Kye-sang) who abducts child genius Choi Ro-hee (Yoo Na). However, things don’t go according to plan and the pair end up coming across murders and mysteries. Director Park Yu-young introduced the series saying, “You can consider The Kidnapping Day as an assorted genre gift box. A variety of genres including comedy, action, buddy, thriller, and human are all wrapped up enticingly in this drama. I think this series will make viewers laugh and also be touched.” If you enjoy a multi-faceted drama, you’ll definitely want to go on this multi-genre adventure.

    2. It Has a Great Original Story & Message

    Untitled 2

The Kidnapping Day is based on a hit novel of the same name. Director Park Yu-young explained some differences between the novel and the series saying, “The original novel focuses on detective Park Sang-yun after the first third and becomes more investigative. Making it a 12-episode series, we were able to expand upon characters and their stories. For our series, we focused on the chemistry between Kim Myeong-jun and Choi Ro-hee. The focus was on the comedy and humanistic elements that come from their relationship.” In addition to the great story, the director shared about the heartwarming message of the series adding, “They begin to become like a family. I think you can also reconsider what it means to be a family after watching our series.”

    3. The Heartwarming Father-Daughter Chemistry

    Untitled 3

The heart of the series lies within the relationship between Kim Myeong-jun and Choi Ro-hee. Choi Ro-hee experiences memory loss and mistakes Myeong-jun as her father. They quickly become like a family as a result. The actors talked about how they enjoyed working together with Yoon Kye-sang commenting, “I was so happy. Working with Yoo Na made me think it would be nice to have a daughter. It was so much fun.” Yoo Na added, “Working with Yoon Kye-sang was really fun. I really had a good time. At first I thought he was a cool actor but as we filmed, I became a fan of his. I think the reason why the set was fun was because of Yoon Kye-sang.” We can’t wait to see how their father-daughter chemistry plays out on screen.

    4. There’s a Rising Child Actor to Look Out For

    Untitled 4

Speaking of Yoo Na, the rising child actor beat out around 500 contenders for her role. Director Park Yu-young said, “Child actors usually play supporting characters or younger versions of main characters. In our case, a child actor is a main character.” He discussed the audition process and shared, “The audition process was very lengthy with 5 rounds. There were about 12 people left in the last round, including Yoo Na. The special thing about Yoo Na was that she didn’t feel like a stereotypical actor who learned how to act.” When asked about feeling any pressure, Yoo Na said, “I did feel pressure. To say I didn’t feel any pressure would be a lie. It was my first time having so many scenes in one drama. I had a lot of lines to learn, so I focused on trying to act naturally.” Yoo Na is definitely a young actor to keep an eye on!

    5. The Actors Themselves Are Fans

    Untitled 1

You know a story is good when the actors become fans themselves. All of the actors shared how much they loved the script and really wanted to be a part of the series. Park Sung-hoon said, “I had work in Japan, so I read the script on a plane but I read through it really quickly. It was so interesting that as soon as I landed in Japan, I called and said I would do it.” Yoon Kye-sang added, “The script was so fun and the setup was interesting. The twist is really great.” Likewise, Kim Shin-rock talked about how she enjoyed reading the script and was thankful to work on the series. It definitely sounds like a series you don’t want to sleep on!

  • Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental” Begins Streaming on Disney+ Sept. 13

Disney+ announced that the fiery young woman Ember and go-with-the-flow guy Wade from Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental” are venturing to the streamer next week. The original feature film begins streaming on Disney+ Sept. 13—also debuting that day is the making-of documentary “Good Chemistry: The Story of Elemental,” and Pixar Animation Studios’ short “Carl’s Date,” featuring the fan-favorite talking dog Dug. • 5 Important Life Lessons We Learned From 2 New K-teen Dramas

Two Korean dramas made their premiere on Viu earlier and, by the looks of it, they’re on their way to becoming modern classics and huge hits.

PLDT Home Viu My Perfect Stranger

If you’re a murder-mystery fan, My Perfect Stranger is a fascinating whodunit with a twist: the main characters travel back in time to 1987. The male lead, news anchor Yoon Hae-Joon (played by the handsome Kim Dong-Wook), is trying to solve a series of murders to prevent his own death in the present. The female lead, literary editor Baek Yoon-Young (played by Jin Ki-Joo who at 34 can easily pass as a high school student), accidentally time travels and chooses to stay to get to know her mother more.

PLDT Home Viu All That We Loved

Meanwhile, All That We Loved is a story about two very close high school friends, Go Yoo (Sehun of EXO) and Ko Joon-Hee (Jo Jun-Young), and their object of affection, Han So-Yeon (Jang Yeo-Bin). Go Yoo is the school’s star basketball player while Go Joon-Hee is a shy, less athletic student. While the series also fast-forwards to when they are adults, the main story plays out when they are in high school.

The two K-dramas have very different plotlines, but My Perfect Stranger and All That We Loved are both set in high school — and here are a few lessons everyone can learn from their stories about teenage life in South Korea:

    1. Have fun while you’re young

In My Perfect Stranger, Yoon Hae-Joon finds himself in 1987 by way of a car that can travel back and forward in time (it’s not a DeLorean). In the present time, his own car stalls one rainy night and he chances upon the time-traveling car in a tunnel, which takes him to a Korean countryside village in 1987. The series shows that while Korean kids wore colorful outfits in the ‘80s, it wasn’t nearly as “wild” as they were in the West. But, like everywhere else, teenagers just wanna have fun, even in a rural Korean village. The 80s vibe is so fun to watch!

    2. Keep your friends close — they can literally save your life

All That We Loved opens with a big plot point. Go Yoo and Go Joon-Hee are wearing hospital gowns and fooling around — or at least the former is laughing while the latter is quite somber. In the next scene, they are being wheeled into an operating room where Joon-Hee is getting a kidney transplant from Yoo. The two boys have very different personalities, but their friendship keeps them close; Yoo defends Joon-Hee from school bullies while Joon-Hee and his grandmother provide him with a sense of family.

    3. Don’t let complicated family relations break you

In My Perfect Stranger, Yoon-Young’s mom Lee Soon-Ae (Syeo Ji-Hye) commits suicide in the present, leaving her a note by the riverbank where she drowns herself. When she sees her mom in 1987, who is now younger than her, all her feelings of guilt make her stay. Yoon-Young tries to prevent her mom from marrying her dad who will not be a good husband. It’s amusing to watch the two women play out familiar family dynamics in reverse.

In All That We Loved, Yoo’s parents are both doctors and have no time for him. This leads him to become very resentful and so he appreciates his friendship all the more with Joon-Hee. It is Yoo’s parents who look after Joon-Hee when he is beaten up by the school bullies and brought to the hospital.

    4. Knowing how to stand up for yourself is essential

It’s a lesson that high schoolers need to learn: stand up for yourself or you will be bullied all your life. Yoon-Young tries to teach her mom Lee Soon-Ae to stand up against her classmate Ko Mi-Sook who orders her to do her writing assignments.

Yoo also tries to teach Joon-Hee to stand up to bullies, telling him that he is taller than even their teachers, but it’s just not Joon-Hee’s personality to fight back — or at least not yet in the earlier episodes. Joon-Hee suffers from cellular memory syndrome (memories transferred through cells from an organ transplant) and when he is attacked by bullies, Yoo can also feel that his friend is experiencing physical pain.

    5. Walk your own path

To the point of being stubborn, the main characters in My Perfect Stranger and All That We Loved are all headstrong and resolute in what they want. They are all charming and likable, but like with any good drama, we want to shake them by the shoulders and say, “Hey, communicate with each other!” or “Tell him about your past!” or “Tell her that you love her!”

  • A Heartwarming Comedy for the Modern Age: Back for a Third Season on Lionsgate Play, ‘Starstruck’ Celebrates Love in All Its Forms

In the screwball comedy series Starstruck, we follow the chaotic life of Jessie (Rose Matafeo), a millennial from New Zealand who finds herself in the bustling streets of Hackney, London. Juggling two dead-end jobs, one as a nanny and the other at a local cinema, Jessie is trying to make ends meet while pursuing her dreams.

    LGP Starstruck

Everything takes an unexpected turn when, on New Year’s Eve, Jessie has a wild night and wakes up the next morning next to Tom (Nikesh Patel), a charming and handsome stranger. As she tries to navigate the awkwardness of the morning-after-the-night-before, Jessie soon discovers that Tom is not just any ordinary guy — he’s a world-famous film star. And what starts as a seemingly random encounter quickly turns into a whirlwind romance as Jessie and Tom continue to cross paths.

In Season 3, the series goes in a completely different direction from the first two seasons, taking a step back from the romance. Jessie, now in her 30s, is grappling with that oh-so-relatable feeling of feeling left behind while all her friends are settling down. As Jessie deals with her friend group’s changing dynamics, she must also figure out how to move on and carve her own path. It’s real and raw, but the show manages to keep things light and entertaining, making it a hilarious and heartwarming watch.

Catch Season 3 of Starstruck on September 1, exclusively in the Philippines on Lionsgate Play
