There’s something about the “Ber months” that feels instantly different. The nights get cooler, Christmas playlists start sneaking into jeepney rides and malls, and the air carries that faint mix of nostalgia and excitement. In the Philippines, September doesn’t just mark the start of the holiday countdown – it’s also the perfect excuse to slow down, cozy up, and indulge in feel-good entertainment.

    The Twilight Saga

    Twilight

Few things match the brooding mood of September better than vampires, werewolves, and a love triangle that had the whole world choosing sides. Long before today’s headline-making romances – yes, we’re looking at you, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce – Bella and Edward had their own ultimate ‘forever’ moment, an engagement reveal that sent Team Edward and Team Jacob into absolute overdrive. The Twilight Saga follows Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), an ordinary girl who falls for the enigmatic Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), only to discover he’s a vampire. As their romance deepens, childhood friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) steps in with his own secrets. With danger, desire, and supernatural stakes at every turn, it’s the perfect marathon for nights when you want a love story as intense as it is iconic.

    What Women Want

    What Women Want

At first, he uses his new ability to get ahead at work, but everything changes when he meets his brilliant new boss Darcy McGuire (Helen Hunt). As Nick begins to understand the women around him, he also learns a few things about himself and what it really takes to win someone’s heart. Witty, charming, and just the right amount of cheesy, What Women Want is proof that love can be found when you least expect it.

    Dirty Dancing

    Dirty Dancing

Set in the summer of 1963, this beloved musical follows Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) on vacation with her family at a sleepy Catskills resort. When she meets dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), she’s drawn into his electrifying world of music, movement, and late-night rehearsals. What starts as secret lessons quickly turns into a romance that challenges both their worlds and leads to one of the most iconic final dance scenes ever filmed. With its legendary soundtrack and unforgettable final dance, this film isn’t just a favorite – it’s a rite of passage.

    Normal People

    Normal People

This beautifully raw series, based on Sally Rooney’s acclaimed novel, follows Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a sharp and solitary young woman, and Connell (Paul Mescal), the well-liked boy from her school, as they weave in and out of each other’s lives from high school through university. Their relationship shifts from secret romance to deep friendship to painful estrangement, all while they struggle with family pressures, personal insecurities, and the push and pull of first love. With its quiet intensity, breathtaking performances, and deeply relatable moments, it’s the kind of drama that lingers long after the last episode.

    Warm Bodies

    Warm Bodies

A zombie romcom? Believe it. When undead loner R (Nicholas Hoult) saves human survivor Julie (Teresa Palmer), an unlikely romance begins to bloom and maybe even spark the end of the apocalypse. • Alicia Silverstone Makes Her Sexy Thriller Comeback with ‘Pretty Thing’

Alicia Silverstone Makes Her Sexy Thriller Comeback with ‘Pretty Thing’

Every love story has risks — but some are more dangerous than others. In Pretty Thing, Alicia Silverstone steps into a role that twists desire into something deadly. Coming soon to Lionsgate Play, the film is a slow-burn erotic thriller that shows how quickly passion can spiral into obsession.

    Pretty Thing 2

Silverstone plays Sophie, a high-level pharmaceutical executive who has built her life on discipline and control. Her marriage is muted, her work consumes her time, and she rarely lets people in. When she begins an affair with Elliot (Karl Glusman), a younger man who seems eager to please, it feels like a decision she can manage.

But what starts as an indulgence soon unravels into something darker, and her lover’s fascination morphs into a dangerous obsession. Soon, Sophie finds herself fighting to reclaim her life, her freedom, and her very sense of control.

Written by Jack Donnelly and directed by Justin Kelly, Pretty Thing doesn’t lean on explosive twists or genre clichés. Instead, it builds an atmosphere that keeps viewers on edge, slowly tightening its grip until every glance and gesture feels like a threat.

For Silverstone, the film also marks a full-circle moment. Her very first movie, The Crush (1993), also told a story of obsession, but with the roles reversed. Back then, she played the teenage stalker; in Pretty Thing, she is the one being stalked. The contrast highlights both how far she’s come and the new weight she brings to this kind of story.

On returning to the stalker thriller genre, Alicia Silverstone told UPI, “It’s fun to revisit it. They’re both in some kind of addictive game. She wants this to stop and he wants it to keep going. They’re both equally determined… It’s an erotic thriller and it starts like a romance. You think, ‘Oh, this is like this really beautiful, romantic story’ and then it takes a turn. I love that about it.”

Experience the tension, the passion, and the danger when Pretty Thing starts streaming exclusively on Lionsgate Play on September 5 via PLDT Home, Smart and Cignal.

  • How Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” Continues to Inspire the Faithful, 21 Years Later

How Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” Continues to Inspire the Faithful, 21 Years Later

A Sacred Tradition Meets a Timeless Film

Holy Week in the Philippines is a solemn and deeply reflective season—an annual pause where many Filipinos step back from their routines to reconnect with their faith. This sacred week, full of rituals and meditative moments, is more than tradition. It’s a personal journey through sacrifice, redemption, and the boundless power of faith.

    5 2

And as Filipinos seek meaning during this time, The Passion of the Christ continues to stand out as a striking companion to reflection.

The Enduring Power of a Cinematic Masterpiece

Released in 2004, The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson, is not just a film—it’s a visceral experience. Based on Anne Catherine Emmerich’s The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, it captures the final twelve hours of Jesus’ life—from Gethsemane’s solitude to the crucifixion’s haunting silence.

Twenty-one years on, its raw emotional intensity still grips audiences, offering a profound perspective on suffering, love, and divine sacrifice.

    Faith Born from Desperation

For Gibson, the inspiration behind the film came from a personal crisis. Struggling with what he described as “spiritual bankruptcy,” he turned to the Bible for solace. What he found was a renewed faith—and a calling to share it through film.

This narrative mirrors the experience of many Filipinos: a people resilient through trials, deeply rooted in their faith, and eager to find spiritual truth not just in doctrine, but in lived experience.

    4 3

Filipino Faith and the Film’s Relevance

Filipino culture is saturated with representations of Christ—from life-sized statues to passion plays. Yet, The Passion of the Christ brings these familiar images to life with unmatched emotional clarity. For viewers who’ve grown up with the story, the film adds layers of depth, pain, and truth that echo far beyond the screen.

From Caleb Deschanel’s somber, breathtaking cinematography to John Debney’s soul-stirring score, and Jim Caviezel’s unforgettable portrayal of Christ—every element is carefully crafted to evoke deep emotion.

    3 5

A Message That Still Speaks Loudly

Speaking to Sight Magazine, Gibson shared his hopes for the film’s impact:

“I hope it spurs them on to investigate the life of Christ for themselves. And I don’t think you can’t be impacted by it. Some of the images are really strong, and I’ve decided not to hold back. Jim Caviezel (the actor who plays Jesus) said it really well. He said there will be some people that it will freak out…(b)ut there will be other people who can’t stop watching it, and even though they are horrified and terrified by it they will sit through the whole thing…By speaking very loudly, image and sound wise, it’s going to make people think very deeply.”

    2 5

    What’s Next: The Resurrection

And he wasn’t wrong. Two decades later, the film continues to stir hearts, challenge perceptions, and renew faith across generations.

Exciting news for fans: Mel Gibson is already preparing a sequel titled Resurrection. The new project aims to explore what happened after Christ’s crucifixion—delving deeper into the foundation of Christian belief. Stay tuned!

    1 7

    When and Where to Watch

Just in time for Holy Week, The Passion of the Christ will stream on Lionsgate Play PH via PLDT Home and Smart, starting Maundy Thursday, April 17, 2025.

Whether it’s your first time watching or a return visit, this film promises a powerful spiritual encounter.

  • JLo and Josh Duhamel Fight for Their Love (and Lives!) in ‘Shotgun Wedding’ on Lionsgate Play

JLo and Josh Duhamel Fight for Their Love (and Lives!) in ‘Shotgun Wedding’ on Lionsgate Play

Forget cold feet – in Shotgun Wedding, Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) and Tom (Josh Duhamel) face a new level of pre-marital jitters. Their idyllic destination wedding in the Philippines takes a hilariously chaotic turn when a band of ruthless pirates crashes the party, turning “til death do us part” into a very real threat. Suddenly, navigating their opinionated families becomes the least of their worries. Now, this bickering couple must put aside their differences and fight tooth and nail to save their loved ones, all while trying not to kill each other in the process.

Directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), Shotgun Wedding promises a wild roller coaster of romance, action, and laugh-out-loud moments. With a star-studded cast including Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Coolidge, Lenny Kravitz, D’Arcy Carden, and more, this is one destination wedding you won’t want to RSVP “no” to.

Interestingly, despite the story being set in the Philippines, Shotgun Wedding was filmed in the Dominican Republic. In an interview with cinemadailyus.com, director Jason Moore explained: “The story takes place in the Philippines, so we were looking for a place where we could safely shoot the movie. We shot this during the first winter of COVID, so we were looking for a place that could double for the Philippines closer to America, as we couldn’t travel all the way there. We did end up changing a lot of the architecture when we arrived in the Dominican Republic. We choose colors and fabrics that reflect Filipino culture.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with freshfiction.tv, Jennifer Lopez shared how she enjoyed the connection between her evolving character and her fluffy wedding dress:“I really felt like the dress itself was like a character in the movie, but also really represented what she was going through.. As she went on, and was more honest with Tom about who she was and what she wanted, [it was] peeling back the layers and becoming more herself and stepping into her own power – more of her authenticity.

“[The dress] was the biggest, most cumbersome, beautiful, but not her at all. Pieces started coming off, and by the end, she’s this badass and took off the hair extensions and she has a gun and is like, ‘Alright, now! Everybody listens to me. This is how it’s going to be.’ We had it basically in stages throughout the whole entire thing. It was very calculated, for sure.”

Mark your calendars for the wild and hilarious Shotgun Wedding, hitting Lionsgate Play on March 28, 2025 on PLDT Home and Smart.

  • Here’s Why John Wick Chapter 4 is more than a movie – It’s the G.A.M.E (Greatest Action Movie Ever)

Here’s Why John Wick Chapter 4 is more than a movie – It’s the G.A.M.E (Greatest Action Movie Ever)

What makes a movie the Greatest Action Movie Ever? Is it jaw-dropping fight choreography? Precision-timed stunts? Or a hero so iconic that their very name sends shivers down your spine? With John Wick: Chapter 4, the answer is clear: it’s all of the above.

Keanu Reeves’ return as the relentless assassin, solidifying John Wick as a true action phenomenon. Praised as “a love letter to action cinema” (Empire) and “pure, over-the-top action spectacle” (The Hollywood Reporter), John Wick 4elevates everything fans loved about its predecessors and levels up in every way imaginable. And now, you can experience this cinematic masterpiece of mayhem in all its glory, exclusively on Lionsgate Play.

    Lionsgate Play John Wick 4

4 Reasons why Chapter 4 is the G.A.M.E.

The fourth instalment of the John Wick saga isn’t just another sequel – It’s a symphony of cinematic carnage. With its signature blend of inventive set pieces, revenge-thriller vibes and of course, the charming Reeves, John Wick Chapter 4 is hailed as the crowning jewel of the franchise. With a staggering 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s officially the highest-rated installment. Here’s why it is  the ‘Greatest Action Movie Ever’.

    1. Action that redefines the genre

Every fight sequence is meticulously choreographed – so fluid and precise, it’s like watching a deadly ballet. Director Chad Stahelski, himself a stuntman, frames every movement with an elegance reminiscent of Fred Astaire—if Fred Astaire wielded nunchucks.

    2. World-building on steroids

From the neon-clad streets of Osaka to the romantic devastation of Paris, John Wick Chapter 4 expands its universe like never before. The High Table’s shadowy empire grows pulling you deeper into its labyrinth of conspiracies.

    3. Keanu Reeves – An unstoppable hero with a zen edge

Critics praise Reeves saying “barrels through the picture with equal parts rampaging force and Zen-like cool” (Los Angeles Times). Reeves is the hero we all want to be: calm, precise, and unbreakable.

    4. The late Lance Reddick’s final bow

The late Lance Reddick’s final performance as Charon, the ever-loyal concierge, adds a poignant weight to Chapter 4. His presence is a reminder that, beneath all the gunfire and mayhem, John Wick is ultimately a story about loyalty, honor, and humanity.

A franchise that changed action movies forever

When John Wick hit theaters in 2014, no one could have predicted the impact it would have on American action cinema. What began as a lean revenge story about a man and his dog has evolved into an epic saga blending high-octane stunts with a mythical narrative. Rolling Stone aptly calls it “the most reliable film franchise this side of Mission: Impossible.”

The fourth chapter doesn’t just continue the story, but raises the stakes while bringing out the big guns—literally and figuratively. While Reeves and the late Reddick anchor the film, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, and Laurence Fishburneadd to the film’s firepower. Yen stuns as the formidable Caine, blending deadly precision with sly humor. Skarsgård’s Marquis oozes cold menace, and Fishburne’s Bowery King brings grit and rebellion with his commanding presence.

The cast’s performance, along with the visual flair and over-the-top action, has resulted in an installment that has been described by critics as “more stylish, more elegant and more bonkers” (Associated Press) than its predecessors. Bottom line: it’s a feat of cinematic excess that will leave you breathless.

Dive into the chaos, elegance, and pure adrenaline of John Wick: Chapter 4 as it premieres on Lionsgate Play this March 14.

That’s the heart of Son of a Critch, the warm yet sharply comedic series that drops you right into the quirky world of growing up in Newfoundland. Coming to Lionsgate Play on 7th March, this semi-autobiographical gem, created by comedian Mark Critch and Tim McAuliffe, is packed with nostalgia, sharp wit and plenty of laughs. Critch narrates his own coming-of-age story, while also playing his father, giving you a hilarious, bittersweet look at his unforgettable childhood.

Lionsgate Play Son of a Critch

Adapted from Critch’s award-winning memoir, the show begins with young Mark (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) reluctantly stepping into junior high, a place brimming with challenges for an unconventional kid with a clever comedic mind. His mother Mary (Claire Rankin) tries to reassure him with her tough-love approach, while his older brother Mike Jr. (Colton Gobbo) and his no-nonsense grandfather (Malcolm McDowell) offer their own support.

But Son of a Critch is not just about the trials and tribulations of growing up in a small town. It’s also about the universal themes of family, acceptance, and finding your place in the world with a comedy twist. The show beautifully captures the heartwarming moments between Mark and his family, as well as addressing more serious issues such as bullying and discrimination.

With its clever writing, charming cast, and relatable coming-of-age story, Son of a Critch is sure to leave you feeling nostalgic for simpler times while providing plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

On what it was like to create a semi-autobiographical show and playing his own father, Mark Critch told The Mary Sue, “It’s interesting because and fascinating to relive my own life from a new perspective. Like you’re writing it, then you’re in pre-production, then you’re actually filming it, and then a couple of times you kind of forget it’s about you in a way. I remember I was filming a scene once and they’re doing it and I thought, ‘Huh, something like this happened to me once.’ And I’m thinking, ‘What am I doing? No, this happened to me and that’s why this is happening.’ So that can be strange, but playing my dad on the show is interesting because it kind of forces me. I have these memories that I put in the show that are important enough that I put them in a show. And memory is a very personal thing. It can be a selfish thing.”
